Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

Crazy hypnotic wonderful modal piano performance on this piece by.... Chick Corea.
  10:47am Listener Gregory:

Apparently this record was later released under Chick Corea's name to generate more sales, without La Roca's permission.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Not the first time such subterfuge has happened in the music biz. A terribly shitty thing to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

Stepping out of his role as Sun Ra lifer, John Gilmore is on tenor sax here. He will show up again in our next selection.

Avatar 10:54am Franco Twinkie:

Doug, for every shy or otherwise retiring person who listens to your show, who says nothing, you might get 4 or 5 who just can't help commenting on every thing you play....and a lot of completely random stuff rattling around in their noisy brain as well.
  10:56am Listener Gregory:

Dizzy, Dusko, and Pete! The Pep Boys!
(@Franco--that doesn't seem likely!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am annie:

i went to the West asheville tailgate market and met a Sun Ra t-shirt-wearing vendor. it was Asheville Jon!! we bought a couple of his bagels.
  10:57am Jeff g.:

Dr. Art Taylor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

I think the number of people who jump into the comments is just a fraction of the overall audience. The reality is that most people are at work or otherwise engaged. And that is, of course, lovely. After all, radio is a soundtrack to our lives, not requiring 100% of our attention (like television). I just don't ever want anyone to feel left out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

Hello, Jeff G!

Was Art Taylor a Dr? I know the bass player Art Davis was known as Dr. Art Davis. Maybe all Arts are honorarily bestowed?
Avatar 10:59am Franco Twinkie:

As Mr. T might say: Keep up the jibber jabber.
  11:01am Listener Gregory:

Pianist Billy Taylor used to be known as Dr. when he appeared on TV. All those Taylors are alike, you know.
Avatar 11:01am northguineahills:

Hola! It's only took 40 hours, but my special blend of southern Cajun boiled peanuts are done!
  11:03am Listener Gregory:

Art Davis actually got his PhD in my department. But it was before my time and not my field at all, so please don't look it up. A few of the very senior faculty remember him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 11:03am Franco Twinkie:

NGH, do you have some sort of special Lenten repast in mind for those peanuts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Uncle Michael:

I'm wondering if Joe Harriott was related to Derrick Harriott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am doctorjazz:

  11:10am Dr. Listener Gregory:

We're all Dr's now.
  11:10am Dean:

"[R]adio is a soundtrack to our lives, not requiring 100% of our attention (like television)." By this do you mean television, like radio, does not require all of our attention (I hope so), or that unlike radio, television does require all of it? If the latter, I can't disagree more strongly. Television is at best a pleasant distraction. Radio--primarily music radio, but other kinds, too--can be a mere soundtrack, but it can also be a valuable source of information, pleasure, enthusiasm...all the good stuff.
Avatar 11:12am Franco Twinkie:

Dean, you nailed it bro!
  11:12am Jeff g.:

I think I added the Dr. accidentally, maybe conflating Billy Taylor and Art Davis, but he deserves it. Ph.D. of the skins.
Avatar 11:13am βrian:

TV in the background makes me crazy.
Avatar 11:14am Franco Twinkie:

Just curious Dean, Do you get Easter vacation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
And also, I think might be so, Duane Harriott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Long howdy, doctorjazz!
  11:14am Dean:

And now a joke for the season...

Q: Which movie was inspired by Scorsese's ongoing disputes with the IRS?
A: Tax ID River.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Yes yes yes! I forgot to mention!
  11:16am Dean:

Franco, Yes and no, mostly no. My school had a break (for the students, not the rest of us) three weeks ago. My daughter's school's break was last week. My son's is this week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

I'll sign on to whatever you're saying. I just meant to say that TV requires that you disengage in part from your own existence. Radio supplements and enriches your own existence. Sumpin' like dat.
  11:18am Dean:

I've never gone for that "willing suspension of disbelief" thing. When art succeeds, I'm all the more happy to be engaged in my own particular existence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Ike:

Avatar 11:32am Franco Twinkie:

Dean, This morning I head off to Whittier to see my accountant. You know what that means....Lovell's!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

It was from Nigeria, Like Fela Kuti, so influenced by him for sure.

Oh how I wish I could've kept that up. I was staying up to 1 or 2 in the morning every night working on those. I ran outta gas.

@Brian in UK
Can I pour you some tea, with a fine frothy adult beverage to follow?
Avatar 11:33am Brian in UK:

@Dean, hope to hear and see Thomas Tallis' Spem in Alium in July. The singers will be dispersed around the edges of the church where it is occuring. Sensurround, kind of?
Avatar 11:33am βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am doctorjazz:

Do you have some bass output increase on your show, Doug? Your show usually overloads my office clock radio, generally doesn't happen on the other shows.just wondering
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am dutchtheo:

Voices of Darkness is a band from Cameroon based in Nigeria.
btw Cameroon is named after the Rio dos Camarões (Shrimp River)
  11:36am Dean:

Say hi to Whittier for me, Franco. Swing by the public library to say hi and you're likely to get a pleasant response.

Brian in UK, I would *love* to hear a live Spem in Alium! I heard the Tallis Scholars years ago in LA. They included Tallis on their program, I seem to recall, but not SiA.

Avatar 11:37am Brian in UK:

@βrian, the purity of the human voice is captivating.

@Dr. Listener Gregory I am a consultant so do not need the prefix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

I have been able to navigate around that shit, but I really should go that route.
Avatar 11:40am βrian:

Spem in Allium is the theme of our spring garden, as it happens.
Avatar 11:40am Brian in UK:

Alium, Schmalium.
It will be in St Lawrences, Ludlow. The church has an unfeasibly high tower, the rich folks from times gone by thought that it would get them into heaven quicker. Should have built a ziggurat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am chresti:

Thanks Doug!
  11:42am Dr. Listener Gregory:

@Brian, I heard Spem in Alium in a museum context with 17 (or however many) speakers situated around the room. You could wander around and hear one part or another as you liked, or stand in the middle and wash yourself in the total sound. Very nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

Very Bacharach flavor to this Kim Weston unreleased gem. But it was written by William Stevenson, Ivy Jo Hunter & Sylvia Moy.
  11:43am Mr C:

this is good!
Avatar 11:45am Brian in UK:

On the subject of TV/Radio. I see TV as a naughty child that needs constant attention despite the quotidian nature of the content.
Radio is for grown ups. you can paint a room, irona shirt, cook the options are broad. See how many programmes tranfer from radio to TV when all they are are talking heads. Perfect for radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

If you described what Marcell Ozuna is doing in today's Hinky Dinky Time gif, people wouldn't believe you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
I quite agree there. He defies description.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Uncle Michael:

K-Doe sounds really young.

@βrian: I discovered tabasco when I was 6, and was hooked. When I was 12 in Thailand, I discovered Thai chilies, and it was all over by then. (my mother thinks black pepper is too spicy).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Uncle Michael:

Brian in UK: Like a good wine (or single malt), he gets better w/ age....

Thanks Doug, choodaloo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Uncle Michael:

Avatar 11:59am Brian in UK:

A good announcer knows when to leave space, silence if you will.
