  11:14pm Sally:

Grateful to hear your story, Daniel. Thank you! Funny about the $10,000 ha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Ike:

Ugh, I hated all that ugly-ass garish junk mail from Ed McMahon. Those were the days. The days of really ugly junk mail.
  11:15pm Sally:

Ha yeah, I still get really ugly junk mail, though!
  11:16pm Carmichael:

You’re the man, Daniel.
Avatar 11:17pm coelacanth∅:

heh, like ronald mcdonald dump is capable of caring about other living beings besides himself.
  11:17pm Jocelyn:

My Mother had a similar experience. When the ship she was on arrived in New York, everyone cheered. Gratitude and excitement to arrive in their new country.
Avatar 11:18pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm George of Troy:

Howdy, Daniel! Enjoying the JD nostalgia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Heavy Chevy:

getit gurl let me see ya bone spurs
  11:20pm Jocelyn:

I loved the 8x10 glossy of Ed that Publishers clearing House sent out saying to keep it so when Ed shows up with the big check he'll personalize it to you. So ridiculous.
  11:20pm Carmichael:

Just thinking New Order ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm fleep:

Ah flutter, you extra added feature
Avatar 11:22pm TDK60:

ahh fleep, ain't it grand?...
  11:22pm Sally:

@Jocelyn, ha I don't remember that!
Avatar 11:22pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 11:23pm coelacanth∅:

fleep, Wow!
Avatar 11:23pm BrassKnuckles:

The first time I discovered Joy Division. What a glorious time. Finding new music was like a simple gold mine back then. Now whenever I find something truly inspiring it's like a shocking unicorn sighting.
  11:23pm Jocelyn:

Sally, it was one of the first pieces of adult mail I received. I began to receive tons of publishers clearing house mail and it didn't stop for years lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Chop Scott:

You are a wonderful man Sir Daniel Blumin--Cheers!
  11:25pm Sally:

@Jocelyn LOL...@BrassKnuckles Yeah I remember too. 1979 was a great year for music, right when it was switching from punk to post-punk.
Avatar 11:27pm BrassKnuckles:

@Sally I still discover some cool stuff that blows me away but not like the level of holy h bomb, the world isn't flat like level amazement. at least not yet. fingers crossed
Avatar 11:28pm coelacanth∅:

that was the year i played 3 imaginary boys/ boys don't cry (i had both lps) at least twice/day for the entire year and beyond
Avatar 11:28pm BrassKnuckles:

that's probably a bad analogy. i'm bad with analogies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm chresti:

Glad you landed safely at WFMU, Daniel!
Avatar 11:28pm TDK60:

..why was Ed McMahon on the Tonight Show? What did he actually do?
  11:29pm Sally:

Ha, yeah exactly BK. I know what you mean.
Avatar 11:31pm BrassKnuckles:

@TDK60 from my understanding he was like some drunk hype man for a talk show host, laughing at everything the host said. I don't know. I hate the talk show format.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm chresti:

He was principle MC and yucker
  11:31pm Sally:

Ed was to Johnny Carson as Andy is to Conan O'Brien??
  11:31pm Carmichael:

He was Second Banana, TDK. Defined the whole talk show setup.
  11:32pm Sally:

Daniel, it's kinda wild you were into stuff like Joy Division in 1979 given you'd just emigrated from the Soviet Union...
  11:33pm Carmichael:

Paul Schaffer to Letterman. William B Williams to Sammy Maudlin.
Avatar 11:33pm TDK60:

Thanks pals, I know, I was just asking the universe rhetorically as if I was a philosopher or something
Avatar 11:33pm BrassKnuckles:

@chresti oh yeah. Phil Hartman's impersonation of McMahon on SNL consisted of him of saying "hahaha, yes!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm Daniel Blumin:

Yes, it is, TDK! Sorry fer the slow uptake up in here commentwise, guys! Thank you Sally, Carm, Chop, chresti and you fer sticking with that mammoth mic breakage!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm Daniel Blumin:

sally, I was not! I had no clue about anything at all... I got into it later when I hit high school! The years just lined up nicely! In 1979, I was into Russian children's records!
  11:35pm Robert Tables:

Thanks for sharing with us, Daniel!
  11:36pm Sally:

LOL thanks for clarifying!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Chop Scott:

You are a wonderful man Sir Daniel Blumin--Cheers!
Avatar 11:36pm Phil O. Sopher ∅:

McMahon was the cricket control
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm chresti:

Daniel, do you still have the russian children's records?
Avatar 11:38pm coelacanth∅:

good question chresti.
...and when do we hear them?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm chresti:

Maybe Johnny forced Ed to be there
Avatar 11:40pm TDK60:

Did Dick Cavett have a yuck yuck guy around?
Avatar 11:41pm coelacanth∅:

- or Ed paid to be there...
  11:41pm Sally:

My aunt and uncle somehow were able to visit the Soviet Union in the mid-1970s (they were Jewish), and brought me back a Russian wooden doll...one of those with smaller and smaller wooden dolls inside. Loved it. Would love to hear the Russian children's records!
  11:42pm Jocelyn:

Matryoshka dolls! I love those!
  11:42pm Sally:

Is that what they're called? Cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm chresti:

I think Dick's yuckers where off camera
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Chop Scott:

You are truly Wunderschnapps! Sir Daniel Blumin--Cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm chresti:

Avatar 11:46pm coelacanth∅:

Cavett was cool (relatively) his thing wasn't zany or hypey like Carsen. (or, needless to say, Conan)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm Daniel Blumin:

Indeed I do, chresti! I did a premium of tracks in 2007! Most of the LP's are spoken word fairy tales... Not much sound so I've been holding off! Till we take over that is...
Avatar 11:47pm TDK60:

Coel; yeh as I recall, he could be serious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm chresti:

Haha! Great @Daniel
Avatar 11:48pm coelacanth∅:

oh,Daniel those are a sound-collager's gold!
send 'em this way!
  11:48pm Sally:

Yeah Cavett was cool...more countercultural
Avatar 11:50pm TDK60:

..just thought: Daniel did you see the "Sword and the Dragon" movie as a child there? It was shown on TV here and mystified me as a kid.
Avatar 11:52pm coelacanth∅:

(of course i say that ^ knowing you could do and probably will do and maybe have done amazing mic breaks with those records as accompaniment)
  11:52pm Jocelyn:

I wasn't around when Calvett was on but I've watched some of his episodes. What fascinates me most about them is the diversity. Different opinions yet no one is tearing each other down. One episode had Janis Joplin and Gloria Swanson. Two completely opposites but everyone is pleasant, listens to each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Daniel Blumin:

Yeah, I will work 'em in somehow when I do a collage show at some point! TDK, never saw that one!
  11:54pm Jocelyn:

No one is talking over anyone, no yelling or eye rolling.
Avatar 11:54pm coelacanth∅:

that sounds about right Jocelyn.
-maybe no one wanted to wreck Cavett's program because they all liked him!
  11:55pm Sally:

Yeah, also I think talk/variety shows were different then, probably due to the times...there was David Frost, Tom Snyder, Smothers Brothers, etc.
Avatar 11:55pm TDK60:

I think it was Cavett who let Lennon invite Black Panther Bobby Seale on.
  11:57pm katharsis:

Thank you
Avatar 11:57pm TDK60:

..thanks for the wonderful sonics tonight Daniel. Till another session.
  11:58pm Jocelyn:

Or the Janis/Raquel Welch episode where Janis says she didn't like her film, Raquel wasn't offended, accepted the differences of opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm fleep:

Aloha and mahalo, Daniel
Avatar 11:59pm coelacanth∅:
