"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Wasn't this a Van Halen song originally?
  9:25am Ryuraku:

Ha! You made my morning playing Exuma! I wore this album out over the years.
  9:28am Gareth Jones:

Hi. Not the place to be asking I guess, but does anyone at WFMU know if the State of the Station broadcast on Wednesday will be made available to listen to on the archived shows? I missed it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am steveo:

yes gareth i happen to have that archive open in a browser tab... www.wfmu.org...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Ken From Hyde Park:

Haven't heard this in a while and now twice in a week. Freaky!
  9:39am sim:

Oh, John sang this on Sunday. Never heard it before then. I like this song. It has a wistfulness to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Phillippe Bastille:

Good morning all from cold, gloomy central Maryland
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am karlward:

Oh man. Another week with this song stuck in my head.
Avatar 9:40am dale:

i heard this on my local oldies station in the car yesterday and tried to sing along. it's a tough register, for me anyway, without getting all falsetto.
Avatar 9:40am Rev. Turnip Druid:

holy crap v2.0: this Airplane tune. Suddenly am 7 years old watching trees go by outside the passenger window of parent's pea-green Ford Pinto...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am VincentNifigance:

Jefferson Airplane in the AM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am steveo:

@karl yep
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Mick:

i thought this was Jefferson Starship, not Airplane though? definitely need to track down John singing it with the hoof and mouth!
Avatar 9:44am dale:

it is starship.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Krys O.:

Oh, man, this Patrice Rushen is heavenly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am melinda:

@Krys agree
Avatar 9:46am dale:

sounds like the romantic scene from taxi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Krys O.:

Not all electric piano music is the same, Dale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am steveo:

i read on wikipedia that marty balin wrote those lyrics in 45 minutes which is weird because that's shorter than the length of the song itself
  9:51am sim:

Yeah, John sings it at the end of the night, around hour 4:00. My fave was Gaylord singing 7&7 is, though Smoko is a strong second
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Krys O.:

Oh, Smoko by Dave the Spazz was on point.
Avatar 9:51am Marcel M:

Morning John.
Avatar 9:55am John Allen:

hey MarceM y everybody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Phillippe Bastille:

@steveo That's hilarious -- and true
Avatar 10:00am Diezel Tea:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am lukavino:

JAAAAAZZZ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am steveo:

yeah? i tend to go for kcr first; phillippe, don't encourage me :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am TomDash:

Hey there, John - great morning soundtrack as always. Maybe "Miracles" can be your post-marathon weekly jam. Wanna play it again?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am karlward:

Can't spell jazz without JA, and also those hand gestures he's making every time he says "jazz!"
  10:05am John from Florham Park:

I thought dj stascho was a great MC and shelia kicked ass doing Stevie nicks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Krys O.:

Will never forget a classmate in the junior high cafeteria who told my friends and me that 'jazz music was a trumpet blowing and nobody listening.'
Avatar 10:06am John Allen:

but Steveo, on kcr they dont go 'jaazzzz'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Krys O.:

They do that on BGO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am steveo:

i'll admit that is a drawback
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am TomDash:

JOHN COLTRANE
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am karlward:

They play jazz on WKCR now?
Avatar 10:09am quinn:

oh yeah i freakin love this lard free song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am steveo:

sounds like they are playing opera or something now but maybe it's jazz opera?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Doug in JC:

A few years back management decided they wanted more classical and less jazz. There was something of an uprising, or whatever counts as an uprising at Columbia
Avatar 10:17am Rev. Turnip Druid:

caps-lock YAY.
  10:17am sim:

Here's the thing I have about jazz. How many times do I have to listen to Little Brown Jug before I'm allowed to say, nope, not for me?
  10:17am John from Florham Park:

Hey fellow WFMU listeners is WNYU still around
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am steveo:

@john yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am sphere:

hullo hullo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am zpulpa:

goodmurning friends! My housemate snaked me to the shower before work while little suzie wouldnt get outta bed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug in JC:

I was a little sad to find out WNTI had been sold off
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Haiku Henry:

Especially diggin today's set! Nice tunes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am sphere:

my jazz complaint is that I can't stand the big bands from the 1940s. Probably because they are the jazz equivalent of Pat Boone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am sphere:

Duke Ellington excepted (of course).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am steveo:

mcgasko did a fantastic big band set on monday of this week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am sphere:

really? i'll have to look it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am steveo:

mcgasko has also played pat boone 3 times, but not since 2016
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am steveo:

ok but don't blame me if you still hate it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Phillippe Bastille:

Had one of those zoned out moments. Had switched over to Eno's Music for Airports because I needed to really concentrate on something yet needed some ambient sounds to block out external noises. Forgot my tunes were playing elsewhere and when I tabbed over to the playlist I was like "Woah, this does NOT sound like Tam Drums". Don't get old, my friends, don't get old...
  10:29am sim:

"I hate big band jazz." "Joe McGasko did a show on 'em this Monday." "I gotta check that out!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am sphere:

@steveo - i would never blame you for anything. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am sphere:

@ sim - like any good WFMU listener, i reserve the right to do aesthetic 180s at any time. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am karlward:

@sim here I am listening to Jefferson Starship, secretly, on my own time. Anything can happen.
  10:34am convoy_pt2:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am steveo:

woah do emojis work now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Mick:

@sphere 10:32 - yup! re. wkcr,i like the Bach fest they do every winter, but otherwise i'm definitely looking for jazz when i go there on the dial. the worst is when they play Columbia 'sports' instead
  10:36am sim:

Hey, I'll always support forays into new experiences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am steveo:

(no my emojis did not go through)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am steveo:

ok got a dentists appt thanks for the tunes good luck everyone JAZZZZ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Phillippe Bastille:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Mick:

  10:39am John from Florham Park:

&mick before I blew off WfUV they wioukd okay football
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Passaic River Blues:

I used to listen to Phil Schaap's "Bird Flight" every morning on WKCR. These days, on WBGO, Rentner, McBride, and Sweeney on WBGO generally put together good programming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am TomDash:

i love the jaaazzzz - and I love this new Daniel Carter band...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am sphere:

for the record, i love jazz. where did my nickname come from? :)
Avatar 10:51am Diezel Tea:

Now THIS is a goddamn song, baby.
Avatar 10:52am Rev. Turnip Druid:

STYROFOAM DOG.
Avatar 10:52am Polyus:

I feel like I got a styrofoam head right now too.
Avatar 10:54am Diezel Tea:

I take my previous comment back - THIS is goddamn song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Krys O.:

HA! Jeff Simmons always makes me think of 200 Motels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am karlward:

Preach it brother Simmons!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am karlward:

YES I NEED A SANDWICH TOO
  10:55am Chi Bill:

What? I graduated HS in '76, never heard the marvelous Styrofoam song until now! Kind of like this jeff guy too, thanks for all the wonderful music, John!
Avatar 10:55am Diezel Tea:

Someone get this man a sandwich! Alright folks, I wish you all to have a splendid weekend, include you, Johnny boy. ))
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am tim from champaign:

Hello everybodee! I missed the Hyenas, aaaaaa! Prbably the and I've seen live the most. I'm digging these fuzz rockers too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am TomDash:

Avatar 11:02am Marcel M:

Hard wok is cookin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am tim from champaign:

I'm sensing a theme here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am anne:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Mick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am sphere:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am steveo:

thanks good to be back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am tim from champaign:

Are you coaxing Bryce to the mic?
Avatar 11:56am John Allen:

well Tim, I don't think there should ever be just ONE way to get Bryce into the studio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am steveo:

if you're out of coax just use speaker wire
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Krys O.:

Just don't bulk erase Bryce.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm chresti:

good morning JA, I wanted to say that your performance last Sunday was a miracle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm chresti:

I don't normally like Jefferson Starship, either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm chresti:

Thanks, until now, I thought JA in the morning was a reggae show
