A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

sorry i know the image is too large, but i felt we needed a little large
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Panda Penguin:

Morning all! Been looking forward to this show all week - with all the current political nonsense going on here in the UK, it's a relief to find myself inhabiting the REAL Modern World for a few hours. This is pure radio utopia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am melinda:

Avatar 9:14am EarlyMorningInSeoul:

@Trouble good morning to you too. This music is actually really perfect for winding down the evening! Keep up the great music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Trouble:

i love you all, far and wide peeps, but the width of the listeners in a geographical sense is sort of mind boggling...
  9:15am John from Florham Park:

@panda that is turning into a clusterf@@k there and that is all the bbc talks about too

Avatar 9:27am jdaAndAnoukFromKöln:

nice and soothing… please continue the next 3 hours… :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Trouble:

merci@magda! i'm all for crossing borders, but seeing as I started here pre-interwebs the magical ability for someone to hear us in Australia when we couldn't even reach NYC without difficulty once upon a time is still not lost on me
  9:28am John from Florham Park:

@magda wonder if we have listeners from Russia?
Avatar 9:28am Itzall Ablurr:

Good morning, Trouble and all. Not sure what to make of the painting today... need some time. Seems really dark but on the other hand, I DO love tigers and there is a tiger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Trouble:

yes we do have a wonderful listener in russia!
Avatar 9:29am Magda:

@trouble that is amazing
@johnfromflorhampark I don't think putin is a fan of WFMU. Maybe if we had a russian pop show....which Rob weisberg may have covered at some point
  9:30am David in London:

Ah Chilton. He is sorely missed. By me at any rate.
Avatar 9:30am NDITNA:

Great music discoveries this morning! I definitely will seek out and purchase the music of both Nivhek and AMP. Glad I found your show.
Avatar 9:31am Roberto:

Good morning, Trouble! I think my question last week got lost in the marathon chaos -- do we know yet where Icepack will be shipping off to in the fall?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am karlward:

I am a strong supporter of anyone who plays Chilton on the radio, or anywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am steveo:

gone too soon -- didn't have health insurance
  9:33am John from Florham Park:

@trouble cool
@magda no kidding about that jerk
  9:34am John from Florham Park:

I consider this station like the VOA without the news just damn good music
Swag For Life Member 9:36am davehamilton:

The Emerald Isle :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am AndrewC.:

Tiny Ruins are from New Zealand.
Avatar 9:38am Roberto:

He didn't have health insurance but I also noticed in one of the later photos of him, he was smoking. While we clearly need better access to health care, we also need people to be smarter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am steveo:

at least he's nobody's fool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am AndrewC.:

Just my regular fact checking service :) I think she was born in the UK though...
Avatar 9:40am Itzall Ablurr:

Pledge goals would be a snap if everybody played. Critical mass + out of state web listeners = make it happen. I feel like some of us are pulling the (metaphorical) plow while everybody else sits around and waits for (free) dinner.
Avatar 9:40am Roberto:

Steveo, he was definitely never anybody's fool. Except maybe Big Tobacco's.
  9:40am arianna:

is ken's state of the station available? i can't seem to find it on the archive.
Avatar 9:41am Itzall Ablurr:

Also, they have medicine for that twitching, I hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Webhamster Henry:

I had this Bionic Woman record!
Avatar 9:41am Roberto:

Wait, this isn't Norflax Oxdun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am steveo:

speaking of smoking, i'm not a smoker, but the incarceration rates by community that Trouble mentioned put me in the legal cannabis camp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug in JC:

@arianna www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am dale:

richard anderson and lindsay wagner were too good to do the close and play records?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Trouble:

not yet @roberto: still waiting on several school decisions...
  9:43am John from Florham Park:

@doug thanks will listen
  9:43am arianna:

@Doug thank you!
Avatar 9:44am Diezel Tea:

Hello Trouble and troublemakers from a perfect Spring day in Yerevan. We finally have the office windows open all day long!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am steveo:

thanks for SoS link, JC Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug in JC:

You're welcome :)
Avatar 9:44am Magda:

@itzallablurr that happens everywhere. Some are stronger to carry the weight. some aren't capable to hold their own. We all benefit and if it wasn't for the past donors the auidence would not have grown. there must be a book on community and those types of human interpersonal dynamics that can help us inspire to work together
Avatar 9:45am Roberto:

OK Trouble, I heard you talking about it last week and I just wanted to be sure I didn't miss anything!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Granny Spicy Tuna:

It was cool to hear that there were so many first-time pledegers this year—making up 25% of the pledges!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am The Oscar:

As a name, "Oscar" is just uncommon enough that hearing it in context like this is always weirdly startling.
Avatar 9:47am Itzall Ablurr:

Hi Magda, of course. There are a million stories in the naked city, some give more than they (proportionally) should, some give what they can, if they can and some just take a free ride. That pretty much goes for everything in this world from what I can tell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am melinda:

Just yesterday my dentist was talking about the Bionic Woman while I had a tooth fracture repaired. She had told a 21-year-old patient she would be bionic after some work was done and then had to try to explain The Bionic Woman.
  9:48am peter:

Is that Orson Wells???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am steveo:

you got a year on this DJ Trouble?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am melinda:

@Granny that is good news, I hadn't heard that number.
  9:49am peter:

Ooops, I mean "Welles."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am The Oscar:

@peter I'm guessing it's Paul Frees-- one of those ubiquitous "That Guy" voice actors who you notice EVERYWHERE once you recognize his voice. Probably best known as the voice of Boris Badenov.
Avatar 9:51am Dances with Moomins:

I'm thinking This is Finnish! and listening to follow word for word. ha ha!
Avatar 9:52am Itzall Ablurr:

Hi Granny Spicy T, that's so great! I think once they are hooked (and get the great swag) they will keep coming back year after year. Selfishly, I want this to be a healthy station!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Trouble:

exactly@melinda: i am playing this for the good of all! from 1976 @steveo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Trouble:

yes@dances with moomins you are right!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Webhamster Henry:

I forgot abut the included Baretta Iron Ons!

no credits on the voices, but definitely not Paul Frees to my ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am steveo:

1976 was a good year -- thanks
  9:55am peter:

Yes @theoscar that Russian baddie sounded like Frees, but the corporate traitor was a dead-ringer for Welles, with those Chicago upper-class vowels and that old Mercury diction.... He did all kind of stuff for quick cash at that time (c. 1977).
Avatar 9:56am Magda:

@itzall yes. yes. Forever is the human condition
  9:57am peter:

He even edited porn, as revealed in the documentary released this winter... So he could free up his photographer (who had porn shoot gigs to pay rent) to get more done on "Other Side of the Wind."
Avatar 9:59am Roberto:

Wait, this isn't Travel Zone!
Avatar 10:01am Linda Lee:

that ain't smokey either! good morning Modernists!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Granny Spicy Tuna:

peter: i just saw "The Other Side of the Wind." WOW.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Ah, les oiseaux !
Avatar 10:05am Linda Lee:

Happy Spring darlin! how are you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Granny Spicy Tuna:

LL: wallowing in pollen over here. it knocked me down yesterday, but today i may be functional. how's your mountain holler?
Avatar 10:07am Linda Lee:

oh lord. so sorry about the pollen! we're fine here. winter's hangin on by those long greasy claws. maybe snow today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Granny Spicy Tuna:

by the way, i could totally go for some rainbows and unicorn soup
Avatar 10:09am Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Granny Spicy Tuna:

California wildflowers are manically bursting around here. I am planning an excursion with my sweetie to plunge into it. Hopefully my allergies won't stop me (i didn't grow up with allergies, so i am clueless how to handle it)
Avatar 10:11am Linda Lee:

ah gee. antihistamine? tell you immune system to calm down. don't do it too often though!
Avatar 10:12am βrian:

California poppies are my favorite.
Avatar 10:12am Dances with Moomins:

Sing it Sister!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Granny Spicy Tuna:

yeah, i try to keep the herbal remedies as the go-to. Nettles seem to help with seasonal allergies, but you have to start them weeks before the pollens hit. Trouble(!) is, one never knows when that may be these days…
Avatar 10:13am Linda Lee:

have seen some stunning images online lately. a nice reminder that spring does come.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Granny Spicy Tuna:

here is an aerial image of california that is orange from the poppies blooming: pbs.twimg.com...
Avatar 10:14am βrian:

Wildfires one day; wild flowers the next.
Avatar 10:15am Roberto:

Linda, I think you've hit on my issue with that vocal genre. They're all trying to sound like Smokey. Only Smokey can and should sound like Smokey.
Avatar 10:15am Linda Lee:

i don't think i've purcahsed a thing from a drugstore in .. 20 years? .. but if i was planning a flower date with allergies i might consider it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am zpulpa:

such a lovely rainy walk to work with the show. Feeling cozy at work and for that i am thankful. i cant wait for the post rain smell and little flower buds.good morning Trouble and friends!
Avatar 10:16am Linda Lee:

@Roberto ~ when you hit a certain age, the influences become too transparent. it may be a curse of aging.
  10:16am Ike:

Someone on Techtonic on Monday claimed that if you cut out sugar and bread, it’ll help your allergies. I’m highly skeptical.
Avatar 10:16am Roberto:

Aging? Moi?
Avatar 10:17am Linda Lee:

creative influences are universal. i just like hearing a little something added.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Ike: sugar and wheat are both rather inflammatory foods, so i can see how that would help
Avatar 10:17am Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Cmurtha:

I'm loving the mix of genres today, and also I'm glad this is the second time I've heard big-bandy goodness this week on WFMU
Avatar 10:18am βrian:

"My dog and your cat?" Hmm.
Avatar 10:18am Linda Lee:

only sillies think Elvis invented rock & roll.
Avatar 10:20am Roberto:

When Smokey sings, I hear violins. Just sayin'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Ike:

@GST, could be. Surely it works for some, but I bet it's very different for different people. Bodies vary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Ike: totally. exactly.
Avatar 10:21am Linda Lee:

@Roberto ~ it's magic!
Avatar 10:21am Linda Lee:

proof that rock & roll was a gift from God right here.
Avatar 10:24am Roberto:

There's probably no God per se, but folks like Sister Rosetta come close to making me a believer.
Avatar 10:24am Linda Lee:

i think it's worthwhile to drop the sugar & wheat & see what happens, for sure. it definitely can't hurt!
  10:24am prudy:

thanks Trouble for this great set of Sister Rosetta!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Sister's singing Heaven in the Hot Club! Love it.
Avatar 10:25am Linda Lee:

Joshua and Jericho!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Granny Spicy Tuna:

LL: i dropped sugar and wheat for a few months, and my constant throat-clearing habit disappeared completely. hmmm…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Cmurtha:

I was feeling that Jericho, which is saying something since whenever I hear that song all I think about is my old evangelical cult school up in New York.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Granny Spicy Tuna:

With that, it's time for another round of hamentashen. Happy Purim, everyone!!!!

Trouble - Re Milkman, I just checked it out - it is about the Northern Ireland situation - btw, it seems that the Brexit controversy may provide an opportunity for NI to exit from UK - I propose this movement be called NIXIT

There's a commenter here that I have so much respect for. She has ( so she's hinted at ) physical and financial challenges and next to her name is both a heart and a SforL radio. Her spirit is always positive. Glad to be in the same modern world. Thanks for your continual support for this group of zanies!
  11:53am Martinibomb:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Trouble:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Ike:

@catherine, fantastic idea. There's a chance of Scexit as well, no? Maybe NI and Scotland can make a new Northern UK or Mini-UK inside the EU.
