Hiya Daniel! I saw Tarnation once at Spaceland, and yes, they were great. But on this particular night it was hard to concentrate on the band because Susan Tyrell was standing in front of me wearing transparent pants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Heavy Chevy:

  9:13pm spidermank:

are you sure they were pants and not just persperation?

Hovering Mink is a wow
Avatar 9:36pm Franco Twinkie:

Spider, my eyes were pretty good back then. I knew what I was looking at. Plus I'm kind of a germaphobe. I'm careful about where I put my tongue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Phillio:

Wow.. So, I tuned in just has the Talk Talk track was on. They're one of my favorite 80s bands, so I go and google them and was shocked to learn their leader Mark Hollis just passed away.
Avatar 9:39pm TDK60:

I'm one of those who only heard a few T.T. cuts back then on college radio; heard more interesting tracks the last few days, here. of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm Heavy Chevy:

My son was born in 88, I remember that much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm cklequ:

I just remembered I was supposed to get this Panicsville rekkid a while ago.
Thanks for the reminder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm chresti:

this is great
Avatar 9:52pm TDK60:

well memory fades as the 21st century gets in gear... but I still recall fleeting images, sounds...
  9:55pm Jocelyn:

KROQ did play them. That's how I discovered them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm coelacanth∅:

i liked the song "it's my Life" when it hit the clubs; then EmtyV started playing the video and it's a great one.
i bought the album and it's excellent...for 80s music!
i bought the follow up and lost interest but that was probably me -losing interest in cheap-sounding, predictable synthpop.
they were very much better than most.
rest in peace, Mr. Hollis.
Avatar 9:55pm TDK60:

..and so many friends dear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm Daniel Blumin:

cklequ, glad to be of service!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Phillio:

The album I'm most familiar with is Laughing Stock. I've been playing upright bass for some time now, and I remember getting hipped to Talk Talk/Mark Hollis a while back by a good friend/fellow musician of mine. Their music definitely has this avant/through composed bent to it that spoke to us and the kind of improvised/through composed stuff we were doing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm chresti:

Octatrack related to choptigon?
Avatar 9:59pm TDK60:

the Elektron Octatrack?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm coelacanth∅:

i'll have to check out that laughing stock album. i think it's their last, probably very different than their 3rd -the last one i heard.
Avatar 10:08pm Franco Twinkie:

RW. Carl Stone was on KPFK. Which at the time had very good music programming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm common:

  10:13pm Charie Purple:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm coelacanth:

  10:15pm John from Florham Park:

I will Daniel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm melinda:

hi Daniel and friends! Happy marathon eve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm chresti:

they think of themselves more as a network-these i lost the fish
  10:19pm John from Florham Park:

Happy marathon eve and good night
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm coelacanth∅:

more as a problem than a solution...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Phillio:

coelacanth, yeah, Laughing Stock's way more ambient/spaced out but with certain shades of rock/blues to it. Seems like their album Spirit of Eden (which the track I heard on FMU was off of) was from the same period when they took things in that direction.
Avatar 10:22pm northguineahills:

we lost coel, feck! We need to find him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm chresti:

that would mean that they never find the fish@coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm coelacanth∅:

Phillio the way you described your musical leanings and how you perceived that album i decided then; then Daniel recommended it.
done deal!
  10:28pm rw:

Thanks Franco! That sounds right. Maybe mid 80s. Vague.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm coelacanth∅:

ngh give it a few hours, then think of me every couple of years wont you? -around groundhog day, if you will...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Daniel Blumin:

Hi, melinda! See ya, John! coela/Phillio, Eden and Laughingstock - both great LP's that sound like little else. Eden is a couple of years earlier but definitely in the same universe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Chop Scott:

Sir Blumin! Cheers!!
Avatar 10:36pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Uncle Michael:

It's checkout time. Thanks for the grüvenschnapps, Daniel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Phillio:

@Daniel, "Sound like little else" is what it's all about! They were hearing their own thing and made what turned out to be some strong statements.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Ike:

Greetings, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Kat in Chicago:

I just got here too, hi errybody. Missed the new Carl Stone :( but I'm gonna grab it soon anyway
  10:46pm Nicolette:

Love this Pascal Comelade piece. Had to check the playlist to see who it was because it sounded a bit like Michael Nyman (around the time he was doing soundtracks for Peter Greenaway films). So I guess this is from the same era.
  10:50pm sweet cheri:

well i'm checking out thanks for the company Daniel, once again I hope everybody has one hell of a weekend, i'll see you all very soon, goodnight Daniel, Jocelyn and everybody here!!

So I head downstairs to fix a snack for the Chief, where Fox News is blaring at me. To the kitchen, the stove light doesn't fill the room so its shadowy. Turn on the musical hi-technology machine and suddenly I'm in a David Lynch film thanks to 'Drench". A wonderful moment or two in a less than wonderful world. Thanks!
