@David D: very cool. FMP released some stuff from the East side of the wall around this time, too.

Ethiopia and Eritrea finally agreed upon a border after over 20 years of disagreeing. Eritrea also seems to be coming in from international isolation....
Avatar 3:32pm northguineahills:

...and there is a large Somali minority in the Somali region in Ethiopia...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm David D:

That would be great, NGH. Tough corner of the world.
Avatar 3:39pm northguineahills:

Then there is the Tigray and Oromo minorities rebelling, but they both seem to be mostly passive recently....

Hello subway people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm David D:

Hello Melinda!
Avatar 3:48pm fred:

The Ex are touring with Ethiopian musicians (again) to celebrate their 40th anniversary. I missed them near Paris a few days ago, I hope they'll stop near Leipzig, it's bound to be a great show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm David D:

Thanks, Fred - with some luck they might, or at least Berlin - not that I manage to get up there much for an evening.
Avatar 3:53pm northguineahills:

@fred: Saw them a few years ago at the Lincoln center w/ many Ethiopian musicians. There's a DVD of their tour of Ethiopia that I need to get my claws on....
Avatar 4:00pm fred:

@ngh: Was Melaku Belay part of this show? He's a pretty impressive dancer, and has been touring with them at times for years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm doctorjazz:

Dancing in my Head (and on my seat)!
Avatar 4:06pm northguineahills:

@fred: I'm pretty sure he was (there was a dancer there, but I only knew the names of the guys on the Ethiopiques Recs). It was outdoors (WFMU was there), and rainy (out of dozen of outdoor concerts there, only one where it wasn't raining, and it was overcast)
Avatar 4:08pm monkeyz:

was late, nearly fell off the train, lucky to be here now!
Avatar 4:08pm northguineahills:

Good thing you avoided the third rail, monkeyz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm David D:

Glad you made it, monkeyz - sounds dangerous.
  4:09pm Carmichael:

Heya David and musical pals. At home on this holiday.
Avatar 4:11pm monkeyz:

yeah you dont even wanna know what kind of biotop the roof is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm David D:

Happy holiday, Carmichael! Which holiday?
Avatar 4:13pm northguineahills:

For gov't employees, Presidents' Day.
  4:15pm Carmichael:

Lincoln’s bday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm kuba:

hi all! *finally* i have to work late so i can tune in!
  4:19pm Ike:

Someone once said the best Ethiopian restaurants are in Rome, not in Ethiopia. Never wanted to go to Rome before that but now I kinda do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm David D:

Hey Kuba, glad to hear you have to work late, then...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm kuba:

excellent dolmen-y photo, btw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm David D:

Ike: All roads lead to injera.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm David D:

Thanks, Kuba - the things you see around town...
  4:24pm Carmichael:

And by “Lincoln”, I don’t mean Doug Schulkind’s daughter ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm David D:

Oh just saw that, thanks - forgot about those February holidays.
Avatar 4:26pm βrian:

"Faster, faster, you fool, you fool ..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm David D:

Never fast enough!
  4:30pm melinda:

Attempting to make injera is on my list of things to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm doctorjazz:

Leonard Cohen cover?
Avatar 4:33pm northguineahills:

@Ike: The best Ethiopian restaurant I ever went to was in South Orange, NJ, even better then the ones in Adams Morgan, DC.
  4:33pm chresti:

Melinda- how?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm David D:

Doc: Yes, indeed!
Avatar 4:34pm βrian:

Ok, I've got to hop on the bus. Hasta luego.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm David D:

Happy ridings, βrian!
  4:36pm Dean:

The late, great Huell Howser, a California historical treasure and host of California's Gold, did an episode about LA's Little Ethiopia around Fairfax and Pico, a corner made infamous during the rioting following the Rodney King verdict. I was having lunch in one of the Ethiopian restaurants there one weekend when Howser walked in to scope the joint. Have yet to watch the episode, though.
  4:40pm melinda:

@chresti according to the recipe in my fermentation book it's just water, flour and maybe salt, left to ferment a day or more. Then cooked on a skillet. I'm putting it off because I have to find teff flour.
  4:44pm chresti:

I’ve seen teff, not the flour, tho. Maybe it can be ground...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm David D:

Sounds good, Dean, I'll have to ask for the name of the place at some point...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm David D:

(assuming the place is in fact good)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm coelacanth∅:

the teff does not need to be ground. it's so tiny it basically makes dough in it's natural form.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Webhamster Henry:

Teff is so tiny - it's practically flour! I love Ethiopian food! but there isn't any around here (Mid Hudson Valley ,NY)at all.
  4:49pm chresti:

We’ve been to a nice Ethiopian restaurant on fairfax, years ago, it had a market, too.

There’s a place on San Pablo ave, near the Oakland /Berkeley border
  4:51pm chresti:

That’s great @Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm David D:

Henry: Not too much here either, again I think Berlin is a better bet in this part of the world.
  4:53pm chresti:

Also on Hollywood Blvd - a regular favorite Ethiopian place, way back when
  4:53pm Dean:

I can't even remember the name of the place, but plenty good ones remain: https://www.theinfatuation.com/los-angeles/guides/a-guide-to-eating-in-little-ethiopia

Yep, @chresti, lots of good options in these parts, too. Now if only I could get my kids to test their palates.
Avatar 4:54pm northguineahills:

Matty Warwick, is that you???
  4:56pm melinda:

I might try using whole teff but I'd like to follow the recipe specifications first. There is teff flour online if I can't find it locally.
  4:57pm chresti:

Dean just tell them they won’t like it until they’re older...;
  4:59pm chresti:

My son outdid us in the spicy food dept by the time he was 11
  5:02pm chresti:

Delightful indeed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm coelacanth∅:

melinda yeah the restaurants might use flour -for our "refined" palates!
i used to work for someone who made injera with whole teff (which we sold at his store) and said he saw no point in grinding it, even though he had a stone grinder at home. i never tried his, but he claimed the lack of need to grind it, along with a fast cooking time, were the reasons teff became popular in ethiopia in the first place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm coelacanth∅:

...(but i agree about following instructions the first time)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm doctorjazz:

Never even heard of teff, sounds interesting.
Avatar 5:07pm northguineahills:

I can barely manage cooking Indian cuisine, I need to master that first before moving on to Ethiopian.

I outdid my parents in spice dept by the time I was 6 (the first time I tried Tobasco). When I met my wife (en Mexico) her friendsds were amazed I'd eat a serrano chili, and then down a big shot of mezcal (my wife still complains I make my food too spicy).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm coelacanth∅:

i don't even remember what it tastes like. only had it 2-3 times, at restaurants in nyc in the 1980s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm coelacanth∅:

ngh your wife might have a point there
Avatar 5:15pm northguineahills:

@coel: considering my tolerance is up to rubbing my eyes after cutting ghost peppers, w/o flinching, you might be on to something (this extreme tolerance is rather recent, I have more chilis then I know what to do w/).
  5:17pm Ike:

@NGH@4:33, agreed! Did we discuss this before? S. Orange has amazing Ethiopian.
  5:19pm chresti:

Teff is a grass, but it can be cooked like a cereal. It tastes like polenta, (to me), rich in iron and protein. Very easy to cook@doc
Avatar 5:22pm northguineahills:

@Ike: The one in the square next to the train station.... (I almost bought a mosenqo lute there, but I just bought a plane ticket, so I put that on hold [I suppose permanently]).
  5:29pm melinda:

@coel that's interesting.
  5:32pm Ike:

I’ve never been to that one, only the other one, Lalibela, several years ago. It was a bit pricey but amazing. I’ll have to get out there again someday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Webhamster Henry:

It's nice to hear some Norwegian. Maybe I should put on that Bergen Oslo train video again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm David D:

Maybe Trans-Siberian for the next few minutes anyway...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm David D:

Or the 1967 film War and Peace, with Ovchinnikov's music.
Avatar 6:02pm fred:

I think we're getting close to my station. I have to get up earlyish tomorrow (beers are planned earlier than usual after work, for a grad student who'll be leaving this week to spend a few months in New York)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm David D:

Cheers, Fred - enjoy the send-off beers...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm doctorjazz:

Like this Jazz Meets India! Time to hit the Staten Island Expressway, hope things aren't too icy.
Thanks, David
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Wadada Stanley:

Hey David. I've been sitting here in the reclining chair enjoying the show. Gotta change to the Zzzz line, now. Good night and thanks.
