Avatar 10:20pm coelacanth∅:

huh...and Tork was probably the best musician of all of them.
Avatar 10:21pm Erica:

And yet coel, Tork played an idiot on the Monkees TV show. I wonder, though if he actually could play the harp in real life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Doc!

Get Out of Denver Bob Seger, my preference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar 10:30pm TDK60:

some of these bands were cooler in '66 than later. (eww, touchy opinion...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Which one? New Breed?
  10:31pm Dean:

We in for Kippington Lodge? Arzachel/Uriel?

One of my favorite examples of a "where did this artist start?" is Irvine Arditti of his Arditti String Quartet. When in school he was a session musician on an album by (here's where I can't remember the precise detail) Al Jarreau, Robert Palmer, or Art Garfunkel.
  10:31pm rw:

Well, coel, if you ever DO get a coffee pot you've been forewarned.
Avatar 10:31pm Erica:

Yes Larry, the New Breed.
  10:32pm Dean:

There's Marc Bell of Dust, eventually Ramones.
Avatar 10:32pm Franco Twinkie:

I know this can't compare with a Monkee, but the German philosopher Herbert Marcuse burned a hole in my friend Mark's fathers coffee table.

Didn't Ozzy Osbourne sing first with Up With People?

Avatar 10:38pm coelacanth∅:

Franco, for the record, "i know you rider" is one of my favorite songs too! but 1) i've heard that version 2) the voices cut through to the kitchen just fine.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm Linda Lee:

isn't this lovely! first time hearing you! hi Larry!
  10:50pm Dean:

Was thinking just this morning about Leon Russell (and Dr. John).

Speaking of which, it'd be great to hear Larry Hosford on WFMU. He reflects the flip side of this show's theme: he never made it big, but his early recordings featured some major players, e.g., George Harrison and Leon Russell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

There are a couple of good ones I forgot. I'll have to do this again sometime
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

He was on the Hosford records because...he owned the label!
Avatar 10:55pm Erica:

Avatar 10:55pm Kris Holmes:

Early Bob Seger is great, love that stuff. Also love Terry Knight & The Pack too.
Avatar 10:56pm still b/p:

Mention of Beatles prompts me to share a bit of comment from someone who was on the roof shooting doc at moment of famous final group performance at time of serious discord (from 50th anniversary story):
“They started playing and John looked over at Paul or Paul looked over at John, and I was just like 4 to 6 feet away and I saw this look on their face…it was like you know what, this is us, it doesn’t matter what’s going down, and al the problems and everything, This is who we are, we’re mates, we’ve been together for so many years, and we are a good rock and roll band and that’s what we’re doing right now.”

This is the look-reader you want on hand if you’re not certain about what a look of your own might've meant. He's on it.
Avatar 10:58pm Erica:

I keep losing connection.
Avatar 10:59pm Kris Holmes:

i did not know there was a postscript to The Wildweeds 45s re.NRBQ
  10:59pm Dean:

I visited Saville Row in '76, where I met a security guard at the door, which was covered in graffiti. The guard claimed he was there that day. Hmmm. Not sure...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar 11:10pm northguineahills:

If it wasn't for the Muppet Movie, I wouldn't know who Paul Williams was....
  11:10pm Dean:

Kinda/sorta related to the show's theme, Chris Isaak's guitarist was one of SF's seminal punk band, The Avengers: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/king-of-slow-guitarist-james-calvin-wilsey-784335

Frankly, I wasn't aware of the Isaaks connection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Linda Lee:

surely not Jeff Bridges!
but yes!

I was referring to the title track "Smell of Incense" by Southwest F.O.B. which I found on YouTube a few years back.

@Erica - That was on the same album as Rock'n'Roll Woman
Avatar 11:20pm still b/p:

The Svengoolie dude -- who I'd never heard of until recently and was showing the Giants movie -- took the opportunity to include himself giving reverent intro for a recent set by Freddy Boom Boom at an amusement park, I think.

Avatar 11:22pm Franco Twinkie:

I saw Dan and John open for the all ready mentioned Poco. Not So. Cal. psych at this point, but boring sweaters and middling strummy blah. They could have rocked, but they took the low road.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm Linda Lee:

@geezerette ~ you mean John & Mary?
  11:32pm Dean:

The crappy thing about the internet is that regional differences in demand for stuff -- say, 45s -- jacks up the price for everybody. That was the business model of a buddy of mine who ran one of the most successful ebay services. Folks in the midwest would pay a ton for records you could find in LA for pennies. I wonder whether Wenzel's Music Town in Downey wouldn't have had that Glen Campbell record for far less than fifty bucks.
  11:32pm Dean:

Rod before he had a face
Avatar 11:34pm Jeff Ash:

Thanks, Larry! Gotta catch the last set on the replay. Time to go see whether the car starts again. Now 13 below with 37 below wind chill. Stay warm!
  11:34pm Dean:

Wow, Rod in '66 sounds more like Rod in the '80s than Rod in the '70s.
Avatar 11:34pm Erica:

Was this before Rod Stewart had that raspy voice lol?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm Funky16Corners:

The female singer on this is Beryl Marsden
Avatar 11:35pm Erica:

'Cause I can barely make out that it's him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm Funky16Corners:

Nite Jeff! Stay Warm!
Avatar 11:35pm TDK60:

I thought Rod Stewart's debut was as singer on Jeff Beck's 1st solo LP "Truth." Wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Linda Lee:

what a funny-odd arrangement!
Avatar 11:37pm coelacanth∅:

Cat loves his dog
  11:37pm rw:

Cat Stevens! (of course)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - Rod even had a 45 before the Shotgun Express
Avatar 11:38pm Erica:

Love "Matthew & Son" the title track, it's haunting and catchy at the same time.
  11:38pm Dean:

And of course Peter Gabriel appeared on a Cat Stevens album from 1970.
Avatar 11:40pm Franco Twinkie:

I saw Peter Allen open for Warren Zevon at the Roxy in 1978.
  11:40pm Dean:

Can we blame the Moody Blues for the oh so precious arrangements and productions of these British tunes?
Avatar 11:40pm Erica:

Peter Allen? As in "the boy from Oz"? Well this is something to add to my Australian 60's playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm Funky16Corners:

@FRanco - That is a WEIRD bill!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm Linda Lee:

now it's the 60s & i'm fascinated by London, England ~ whatever that means for a grade-school American in love with the Beatles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm Funky16Corners:

@Dean - I love those arrangements!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - The same!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Linda Lee:

i do too.
  11:44pm Dean:

I sample them cautiously.
Avatar 11:44pm TDK60:

Dean, maybe that precious sound even goes back to the Zombies? Kinks? Donovan? 'Lady Jane' by the Stones?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm Funky16Corners:

Beatles, Stones, Kinks, countless 45-only bands, Moody Blues, Bee Gees etc etc
  11:46pm Dean:

Mind you, I really enjoy the Alessi Brothers, whose knack for overproduction and syrup should be legendary. But the Moody Blues, Donovan, some of the Kinks, etc. ... naw. Too treacly for my palate.
Avatar 11:46pm Franco Twinkie:

No kidding, Larry. And even funnier, was the writer Don Snowden came and sat with me and my friend Mark, and the whole time had this exasperated I've seen it all expression n his face.
Avatar 11:48pm coelacanth∅:

well it wasn't the moodies it was their thieving producer, and it goes back to '66 doesn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm Linda Lee:

Herd: i hear glam in utero..
  11:48pm Dean:

Surely the tradition extends further back. Ferrante & Teicher? Percy Faith?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm Funky16Corners:

I have a show coming up later this month dedicated to the period of 1965 to early 1967 where all of those styles were coming into focus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Linda Lee:

that sounds lovely
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

@Linda - Good call!
  11:50pm rw:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar 11:50pm TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Linda Lee:

@TDK60 ~ is it not all just Brian Jones' fault?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm Linda Lee:

glad you heard it too, Larry!
  11:52pm Dean:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Linda Lee:

  11:56pm Dean:

Avatar 11:59pm coelacanth∅:

  11:59pm Dean:

Wait...later Cat Stevens is "soft," but Moody Blues production passes muster? Does not compute.
Avatar 11:59pm Erica:

Chris Bell Larry. I looked it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am chresti:
