Scratchy vanity 45s, pilfered field recordings, muddy off-the-radio sounds, homemade congregational tapes and vintage commercial gospel throw-downs; a little preachin', a little salvation, a little audio tomfoolery.

saw a film about people who eat that dirt. strange.
Avatar 8:06pm Hot Fish:

I saw a bag of white dirt similar to that for sale to be eaten at a gas station in Phoenix City AL. The cashier said it was addictive.
  8:07pm John from Florham Park:

Congrats jake you did it

Evening, Sinner. Sounds great from here.

Kaopectate used to be made out of kaolinite and pectin. Until the 1980s when the FDA decided clay was not a good thing. Despite it working for decades. Now Kaopectate is no different than other crappy salicylate medicine.
  8:11pm P-90:

Evenin’, sinner. And Sinners. How do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm sinner:

Hot Fish: just about every gas station around here sells it.
  8:12pm Russ:

Good evening, no doubting Thomases over here!
  8:14pm Rich in NC:

Hello Russell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm sinner:

What JG said. Hey hey, Russ, P-90,
Avatar 8:16pm Hot Fish:

Maybe it is addictive...
  8:16pm Ven:

Mom used to give me kaopectate.
  8:17pm JakeGould:

My dad used to give me Kaopectate when I was a kid and had what ailed me and it worked great! In contrast, I am sensitive to salicylate stuff and it makes me look like a pale ghost when I take it.
  8:17pm Russ:

Hey! Excuse me if I tune out early and catch up via the archive, I've had a "snottynose" all week. Diggin the show as always thus far.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm sinner:

It's a particular kind of clay, usually from a certain place in Georgia. Soothes the stomach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm sinner:

Go-eth, Russ.
  8:19pm Russ:

One more tune...(always best to dip out during a song and not the sermon, right? Although here, the music is the sermon!)
  8:20pm Listener Robert:

You can still buy kaolin in as pure a grade as for drug purposes, and you can easily get food grade pectin, if you want to make your own Kaopectate. I don't even know why bismuth subsalicylate gets a free pass.
  8:22pm JakeGould:

@ListenerRobert: Because the FDA is as corrupt as most anything else and in the 1980s Reagan helped dismantle and weaken protections in favor of profit. You can also get Kaopectate equivalents at pet food stores.
  8:22pm Rich in NC:

Mamma says hi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Folsom:

Canada has Kaopectate with attapulgite, have no idea how well it works.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm sinner:

Listener Robert. Thank you.
  8:23pm JakeGould:

Anyway, I really like the art rooster.
  8:23pm Listener Robert:

Similar story for terpene hydrate cough syrup. Someone should come out with a terpene hydrate liqueur. I bet Buckley's included terpene hydrate as an "inactive" ingredient, i.e. "flavoring".
  8:23pm JakeGould:

@Folsom: Canada is a great place. I also learned last night about Toronto’s raccoons. So many of them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm sinner:

We crave the smell. Kaolin is also used in the making of high quality glossy magazine paper.
Avatar 8:24pm Hot Fish:

What's stonger than dirt?
  8:24pm JakeGould:

@Folsom: You can still get cough syrup with codeine in Canada, right?

@sinner: Is it the same smell as flat clay coated mailers?
  8:25pm Listener Robert:

I meant Buckley's cough syrup probably includeS, present tense.
  8:25pm Russ:

Hi Mom! Excellent artwork tonight too, Brother Nutt. Looks like evangelical folk art. Peace.
  8:26pm JakeGould:

@ListenerRobert: Pretty sure “Grandma’s White Dirt” is kaolinite or similar.
Swag For Life Member 8:28pm Jinx:

i prefer a bowl of cereal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm sinner:

I dunno about the mailers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm sinner:

Sniff a copy of ArtForum.
  8:29pm JakeGould:

@sinner: Haha! I used to do work for them, so yeah!
Avatar 8:30pm Brother Ray:

Sister Leighton shouting from the vestibule...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm sinner:

hey leighton!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Folsom:

@Jake are Toronto raccoons like Istanbul's cats?
  8:30pm JakeGould:

Whenever the stress of working for them affected my stomach I guess I should have just shredded a page or two and drink it down with a cold glass of water.
  8:32pm JakeGould:

@Folsom: Apparently yes. But more like a city neighborhood that has a lot of strays. I have like 16 strays near me in a 2 block radius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm sinner:

Humans in places crave the minerals where they have a diet deficiency.
  8:34pm JakeGould:

Kaolin absorbs toxins so you can “expel” them. Also, Kaopectate is useful if you want to drink but not really get that drunk. Like take a tablespoon, go drink and there you go… NOT AS DRUNK!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm Folsom:

@Jake does that still work with the new stuff or only the original?
  8:38pm JakeGould:

@Folsom: The new stuff is just branding. Old formula but any clay-based stomach medicine should work the same.
  8:39pm JakeGould:

Or just get some that white dirt, and same diff. Mix it with applesauce and there you go.
Avatar 8:40pm On the Yazoo:

The clay used in Mississippi is Bentonite. .... and it is used to make kitty litter.

Avatar 8:42pm Kamp Climax:

Does she?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm steveo:

I grew up in Delaware near a town called Kaolin in Pennsylvania. We used to swim in a quarry near there, but I don't know if it was a kaolin quarry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm sinner:

steveo: has to be a connection
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm steveo:

Probably. There's also a Limestone Road nearby.

Thanks very much for the show. Always a pleasure to listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm sinner:

Yeh. There's a "JG is a Stu' Head Avenue" in Selma.
Avatar 8:56pm Brother Ray:

Peace! Shalom! Paz!
