Failure today and for the future.
Avatar 3:05pm TDK60:

Fabio, one of my first dark songs from my youth. Love the instruments, the melody, the sound. Reminds me of all yesterday's parties.
  3:05pm John from Florham Park:

Nice song by velvet underground
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm listener james from westwood:

  3:06pm Listener Robert:

I was stuck with this for a while when my friend's CD was stuck in his car. Now I got FM radio stuck instead, but that's fine because...you know.
  3:06pm Brendan:

Hi ho... Oh hi!

Hi all
  3:07pm wfmu listener phillip:

LOVED that last song olivia played "Skin" by Zola Jesus.
Avatar 3:08pm Lixiviated Life:

I went to see the Whitney to see the Warhol exhibit.
Thought provoking.
In retrospect, I now see VU is the rock band equivalent of Andy W.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm tim from champaign:

How come I never tire of the Velvets an am continually amazed even though I've listened to them thousands of times?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm dale:

another tribute show - the failure of eternal life.
  3:09pm Brendan:

Great guitar in this song . Its there alongside the lyrics the whole time but not at all intrusive.
Avatar 3:09pm Lixiviated Life:

It's not the VU as much as it is your idea of the VU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm mrdonutsu:

Did Nico and Marianne Faithful ever get into a fistfight?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm Michael 98145:

so glad i was able to see Nico before she fell and expired.
Avatar 3:11pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

I think VU is similar to U2 in that both take avant -garde music from the extreme abstract and also punk world (respectively) and make it more accessible to a college radio crowd. Well, in U2's case, a stadium arena crowd. I think I read part of that in a review once. The VU stuff I just made up. Thoughts?
Avatar 3:11pm TDK60:

..bought the first V.U. LP in a Shop Rite supermarket in suburban NJ!
  3:13pm listener monica:

somewhere in the universe there is a cassette tape of me singing ATP with my boyfriend playing guitar. the tape was stolen out of a car somewhere in California. i hope the thief appreciated the sounds.
Avatar 3:13pm Lixiviated Life:

I've wasted hours of my life in a Shop Rite supermarket in suburban NJ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm The Oscar:

Ahh, I see now. RIP JM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm TomDash:

Great tribute to Jonas Mekas - RIP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm listener james from westwood:

I perform the Shop Rite about once a week. Buy the sacrifice there, too. Mmmm ... chicken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Carmichael:

Hi Ho!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm The Oscar:

Is Kenneth Anger the last of that generation left? Mekas, Warhol, Brakhage, the Kuchars...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Booz:

Man, hearing Stan's voice takes me back to college
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm TomDash:

@The Oscar - Michael Snow is alive and well!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Booz:

The visual track to this episode is accessible by closing your eyes tightly and rubbing them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm The Oscar:

I had a TA in college who saw The Matrix in the theater with Stan Brakhage, and I will never stop being jealous.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm Scott:

Avatar 3:25pm TDK60:

Wild Neil - it was Nutley, NJ, 1967; the year "Banana" came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm steveo:

was it in the produce aisle?
Avatar 3:30pm Lixiviated Life:

it's all happening in the produce aisle my friend
Avatar 3:31pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

@TDK 60-do you still have it?? Did you peel the banana???
Avatar 3:31pm TDK60:

steveo: yes, over there by the bananas. No, they had just installed a free-standing LP shelf-booth thing as you walked in. I was intrigued. And I took it home and listened to it..holy smokes!
Avatar 3:32pm northguineahills:

Avatar 3:33pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

@TDK 60-I saw a Greek import of a David Bowie album at Rockaway Sales in Newton, should have bought it. It was an odd looking album!
Avatar 3:33pm northguineahills:

I have it displayed, and I've peeled the banana...
Avatar 3:33pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

...aw man, NEVER peel the banana!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm steveo:

tdk60: fascinating!

maclise: twas a cimbalom, i am told by very reputable sources
Avatar 3:34pm Lixiviated Life:

Sometimes you have no choice but to peel the banana.
Are we not men?
Avatar 3:36pm TDK60:

That LP was lost/ripped long ago; have another. Yeah, I stripped the peel. // "I'm waiting for my man, $26 in my hand." <what does that mean? (a 15-year-old then).
  3:37pm Somebody:

The First Subtle Cabinet reminded me of Arca's music, especially the bells throughout that track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Michael 98145:

well, that was certainly -some- way to start a show !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm coelacanth∅:

it's bait. not peeling the banana would be like not opening up the sticky fingers gatefold, or not...
wasn't there an album with the lyrics printed on the inside of the sleeve?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm coelacanth∅:

(or not getting wet the colorfast led zeppelin sleeve....which i actually accomplished. i really didn't care. but it eventually started displaying colors anyway)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Ken From Hyde Park:

That banana's conditions were ripe for failure.
Avatar 3:47pm White Michael:

I think there were some issues between Jonas and member of the Living Theater. I attended some showing of a bunch of old stuff including Living Theater performances. Some of them were there and none too happy about it. Jonas was not there... but i remember some shouting and Fuck yous going around
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm The Oscar:

Jonas appeared at the Harvard Film Archive just a couple of years ago-- kicking myself now for missing it...
  3:50pm yippie:

David peel too
  3:51pm spodiodi:

*tips hat* to Fabio y fracasados/fracasadas. good things for all people. music forever, please.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm TomDash:

Ha! I was just thinking about the Miles Davis/John Lennon basketball clip - Jonas Mekas was a true documenter of the downtown arts scene in NYC...always carrying his 16mm camera to chronicle a certain time in the city.
Avatar 3:55pm V Priceless:

Dali lived @ the St. Regis Hotel, I think
Avatar 3:57pm northguineahills:

I'm on day 9 of eating nothing but the mexi chicken soup I made from scratch. Who knew there would be so much food (and I don't eat much, either...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Ken From Hyde Park:

A chicken soup novena. Nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm dale:

he makes it seem so simple. if we throw out self-imposed roadblocks it probably is.
Avatar 4:19pm still b/p:

The desultory organ noodling in Uh Yes Uh No reminded me of someone vaguely playing with the organ part from the early portion of Highway Star. So I went and listened to Highway Star. Now all the furniture is unpended and the windows are all broken, and the Mekas is a leveling dial-down.
  4:20pm JakeGould:

Posted this on Trouble’s list but will share it here as well: “Williamsburg Brooklyn During the Golden Age Before the Emergence of Artists’ Utopia”: Very cool footage of the Lithuanian parts of Williamsburg in the 1950s and then a return in the 1970s. www.youtube.com...
  4:22pm JakeGould:

Andy Warhol and his Polaroid camera and tape recorder and Jonas Mekas and his 16mm/8mm cameras just documenting stuff really does echo the world of Instagram and such we live in today.
Avatar 4:23pm northguineahills:

Curious how many progenitors of Fluxus were Lithuanian.
  4:24pm Somebody:

What's the song playing in the background now? It sounds really nice!
Avatar 4:24pm northguineahills:

Curious, how many progenitators of Fluxus were Lithuanian.
  4:24pm JakeGould:

Robert Capa was Hungarian. Lots of Eastern European culture in cool culture.
Avatar 4:26pm northguineahills:

@Somebody: VU's "All tomorrow's parties".
  4:30pm Somebody:

Also, how do you spell Ron Vorder's name?
Avatar 4:31pm northguineahills:

Nick Hallet had some great anecdotes on Jonas on David Weinstein's Ridgewood Radio on the Give the Drummer Some stream, yesterday.
Avatar 4:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...as opposed to TheBeatles' 'Carnival of Light'...
Avatar 4:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...tho' Mekas was buds w/ John&Yoko...
Avatar 4:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A Prophet like Warhol you say. Interesting.
  4:42pm tak:

Avatar 4:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sorry Haters - but this is amazing.
  4:43pm Listener Robert:

Well, you got my housemate's and his dog's ears, at least.
  4:44pm Johnzon:

why do people hate on yoko ono's singing this is cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm spodiodi:

Not a hater, but not intelligent enough to appreciate, I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm spodiodi:

I don't get the Grateful Dead either
  4:45pm tak:

wasn't hating, it is amazing, still makes me laugh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm spodiodi:

@JakeG, thanks for that link!
  4:49pm nic:

great love this!!!
  4:49pm Fredericks:

I'll be frank. This is not my favorite Lennon.
  4:50pm Johnzon:

tak I was speaking generally I didn't read the previous comments before posting
Avatar 4:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I guess Paul didn't have as many miscarriages...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm spodiodi:

take away the vocal, and I'd put it on repeat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm coelacanth∅:

i like this and i have since i first heard it, in the 70s. my only problem with it though is the mix. yoko's vocals should be secondary to the git + feedback sounds, which are far more interesting (and far less self-indulgent!) - maybe coming up loud occasionally, and with heavy echo at times.
John's exploring some interesting territory here.
Avatar 4:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or walk around after Hiroshima...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm spodiodi:

the rumor in my neck of the woods was those were all(8?) "induced" miscarriages
  4:52pm Fredericks:

Did I turn it off? No.
  4:52pm P-90:

@coel: agree 100%
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm spodiodi:

  4:53pm Circo Americano:

This "Unfinished Music Vol. 2: Life With the Lions" is TRANSCENDENT John & Yoko material!
Avatar 4:53pm northguineahills:

  4:53pm Johnzon:

i like the vocal
Avatar 4:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Lennon's relationship to Production alone could be - a very deep rabbithole indeed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm coelacanth∅:

yes, Rabbit, no need to go down that rabbit hole; but i' would love to have "produced" John & Yoko's sessions.
(as opposed to, say, nobody producing them)
  4:56pm fletchernyc:

Love the John and Yoko. Indulge! I say!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm spodiodi:

i hear nobody is up for an award
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm spodiodi:

Avatar 4:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Bowie said John convinced him Managers weren't necessary either...
  4:59pm tak:

it was a different time.
Avatar 5:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah yerknow - repressed stuff had to come out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm coelacanth∅:

Bowie had a good head for business, probably; though i'm sure he still had a manager. technically he was right and some people would've been better off without the shittyass scammer managers they had; but can you imagine Lennon without a manager?
- not xactly a business man.
Avatar 5:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - Paul was right about Klein.
  5:07pm Mr.taxi:

I dig
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 5:52pm Linda Lee:

i think the new new york is here, but decentralized. so many of us scattered & brought a piece along.
Avatar 5:53pm Linda Lee:

then again, back in the day the Times asked 'whither Bohemia?' without a understanding that it's not a place, but a sensibility.
