Two Ricky's and a Tele. Who is this guitar gang on the tracks?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm Funky16Corners:

That's me and my band, The Phantom Five, circa 1985
Avatar 10:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Who you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Funky16Corners:

From the left, Chris Grogan, Vincent Grogan, Larry Grogan, Bill Luther
Avatar 10:10pm Erica:

The Grogan brothers and Bill Luther. Cool. I didn't know you were in a band Larry. I'm guessing you were the one in the sunshades.
Avatar 10:10pm still b/p:

Oh, a Phamily jam.

You were the drummer, Larry?

Do we get to hear the Grogans rip?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Correct
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Funky16Corners:

Hey SBP. It lasted about as long as most bands featuring brothers
  10:12pm chresti:

I’m jangled and fried
Avatar 10:12pm Erica:

You beat me to it fleep. Will we get to hear the Phantom Five Larry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Funky16Corners:

@Fleep - yes I was, lead singer, too
@FRanco - You do!
Avatar 10:12pm Franco Twinkie:

This is all a 20 year time shift ... It sounds like 1965.
  10:18pm chresti:

Are you taking psyslocible again coel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - It was supposed to!
Avatar 10:20pm TDK60:

fun back then, when neo-mods, paisley-garagers, neo-rockabillys, hardcore punx, Bauhaus/Cure -type-new-wavers, paisleys, ska-s, etc. all mixed at the club! (along with clueless older longhairs like me too. -heh.)
Avatar 10:20pm still b/p:

So 60s garage band aesthetic is like cicada cycles.
Avatar 10:20pm coelacanth∅:

chresti i just love that song. i've never done ANY drugs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm doctorjazz:

Of course, not a bad thing, but would have sworn it was a new Nuggets reissue before I checked the list.
Avatar 10:23pm TDK60:

docjazz- oh yeah, a lot of the '80s combos were into '60s revival.
Avatar 10:23pm coelacanth∅:

TDK i was a clueless younger longhair in the clubs! i was in a punk band but refused to cut my hair, as an act of rebellion!
  10:24pm chresti:

Coelacanthø- I love the drug and the song!
Avatar 10:25pm Erica:

Some of these songs fit the 60 garage rock revival theme perfectly, others sound more like jangle pop/alt rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm fleep:

looked like a preppie, smoked like a chimney
Avatar 10:27pm coelacanth∅:

chresti i don't know how i never took shrooms in the day. first time i ever did was within the last 10 years. i did it twice, very small doses.
through the years people often said "oh you gotta try mushrooms it seems like you!" -not sure what that meant!
Avatar 10:28pm TDK60:

I was friends with musicians in all those areas; luckily a scene where folks' fashion or scene was diverse.
Avatar 10:29pm Franco Twinkie:

The Lyres were one of my favorites. Walked thru the snow to see them at Maxwells.
Avatar 10:31pm TDK60:

Larry, Did you ever hear Plan 9? '80s psych-garage outfit from Rhode Island; they had about 4 lead guitarists and maybe 7 or 8 total. A gas.
Avatar 10:31pm Erica:

Pre-Manic Monday Bangles?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Saw the Lyres at Maxwells many times. We Might have been at the same shows!
Avatar 10:32pm coelacanth∅:

i saw so many bands in clubs in the (mostly early) 80s, but i don't recall seeing any of the ones played so far tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - Yes, I dug Plan 9 a lot
Avatar 10:32pm Franco Twinkie:

Saw The Bangs with Green On Red and The Leaving Trains at this dump in L.A. called the Anti Club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - yes, a couple of records before then
Avatar 10:33pm TDK60:

Saw the Lyres once! Fun; in fact, the lead singer had had so much fun, that he fell offstage!
  10:33pm chresti:

Yeah I’ve had it in small doses about 30 or so years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - I'm pretty sure Jeff fell of the stage many, many times
Avatar 10:34pm northguineahills:

Here, just downed a tall cup of oolong tea, and cleaning (I might regret this in a few hours).
Avatar 10:34pm TDK60:

this Plimsouls is a rush
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, such a great band
Avatar 10:34pm Jeff Ash:

Tonight's show is a flashback to afternoons spent listening to our local indie radio station in Madison, Wisconsin, from 1982 on. It was quite a revelation and quite an education for someone who'd grown up on Top 40 and free-form FM radio.
  10:34pm Gary via app:

Had this one as a kid!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Yeah the Plimsouls got a fair amount of airplay on alternative/college radio
Avatar 10:36pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry, Green River opened for the Lyres the night I was there. Jeff Connely guzzled a giant can of grape Hi C and it ran down the front of his shirt. Sound familiar?
Avatar 10:36pm TDK60:

Shrooms? I'd like to try drugs like that, but I'm waiting for them to become legal..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - Yes, VERY
Avatar 10:38pm Jeff Ash:

And of course the Plimsouls and that cut got lots of exposure from being in "Valley Girl."
Avatar 10:38pm TDK60:

..wait a second...Franco, you saw Green On Red?!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Funky16Corners:

Just watched it last weekend
Avatar 10:38pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh shit, My brother in laws band opened for the Pandoras at Al's Bar. And were pelted with tampons!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm doctorjazz:

! Missed most of this, 80s were my jazz education time, with some punk/New Wave for variety . Fun stuff.
Avatar 10:40pm Franco Twinkie:

Tdk. Yes. I'm still friends with Chris.
Avatar 10:42pm coelacanth∅:

i vaguely remember seeing the pandoras. i can't be sure. the clubs, especially patrix in new brunswick, usually had 4 bands/night; all or mostly unsigned. i do remember some of the bands that later got more known, but probably just wasn't blown away by that many of them that i remember.
Avatar 10:43pm TDK60:

Franco -Green O.R. - I have two *killer* albums of theirs: 'Gas Food Lodging' and 'Here Come The Snakes.'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I don't remember the Pandoras making it out to the East Coast. I may be wrong
Avatar 10:45pm Franco Twinkie:

Yup, Green On Red were serious motherfuckers for sure.
Avatar 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

it rings a bell with me, but i could easily be mistaken.
(i do remember seeing a few bands with members that later became wfmu djs)
Avatar 10:48pm TDK60:

it was sometimes fun to see someone in, say 1984, who looked like they stepped out of 1966, Brian Jones haircut, polka-dot shirt, boots.
Avatar 10:48pm coelacanth∅:

dr.jazz, it was c.1985,latest, that i disengaged almost entirely from pop/rock type music myself, out of frustration & disappointment. i got into jazz more then too but much more so into reggae and what is now called "world music".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Funky16Corners:

Those were my peeps. I had the haircut...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Parq:

Hey, Larry. Great to hear "Million Miles Away", one of those power pop anthems ("Living on the Blue Line" comes to mind, as does "Another Girl, Another Planet") that are so gorgeous that they approach poetry. Bet I'll be hearing more examples tonight.
Avatar 10:51pm coelacanth∅:

the bangles were very good in the beginning; the go-gos even better, in my opinion.
Avatar 10:52pm TDK60:

coel: I was also into reggae, world, jazz, plus pop/rock.
Avatar 10:54pm TDK60:

..weren't Rain Parade, Green On Red, Dream Syndicate all part of the L.A. same scene?
Avatar 10:54pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, The Go Go's in the beginning were so insane! BTW, Chresti was Charlotte's room mate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq! Yes, an anthem to be sure.
Avatar 10:55pm david w:

Loving seeing all these stories, and the music... thanks Larry!
Avatar 10:55pm coelacanth∅:

okay i did see these guys, pre-record label. not impressed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Funky16Corners:

Hey David! More to come!
Avatar 10:56pm Franco Twinkie:

Tdk, Yes, lot's of intermingling, and show's together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm doctorjazz:

Coel, I checked out other genres, but got heavy into jazz history, "out" Jazz, just jumped in completely. Was inspired by a college course in jazz history given by bassist Chuck Israels, who had played with Bill Evans (he had to be absent for a week. His sub was Lee Konitz, who put on Miles' On The Corner, pulled out his alto, played and stopped the record to say, "listen to this!"). I didn't actually realize who they were, but they got me hooked. .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Parq:

Larry, help me if you can. There was a New York band from that scene, played a lot of gigs but never broke out of local status. The lead singer wore his guitar slung very high, almost tucked under his arm, and sang in a reedy voice that was reminiscent of Feargal Sharkey. They came across as sort of an updated version of Gerry and the Pacemakeers. They had an "S" name. That's all I can remember. Anybody?
Avatar 10:57pm coelacanth∅:

Franco really?! introduce us!
(...Charlotte was the drummer, right? - i actually liked the bassist)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Parq:

They had a song called "I've Got a Secret" if that helps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Funky16Corners:

@Parq - Mosquitos, maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Parq:

That's it! The Mosquitos! Thanks so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

No probs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Funky16Corners:

BTW that Batman clip is on the Mod Fun 45
Avatar 11:00pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, Jane Drano was what she called herself in the beginning. A real cutie!
Avatar 11:00pm coelacanth∅:

dr.jazz it was to be a few years later for me. i liked some jazz (Monk & Trane esp) but lost interest until the early 90s, when David S. Ware gave me one of his cds - and my world turned over.
i was heavily into old country blues though, the whole time.
Avatar 11:01pm Erica:

What did Batman have to do with this song? What were Mod Fun's intention I mean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

After stopping playing in bands, I dove headlong into jazz for about five or six years, nothing but
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - Batman was a huge part of pop art iconography, and a big 60s TV show, so basically playing the refs, as they say
Avatar 11:02pm TDK60:

DJ Larry, you had to have heard of the Cynics, longtime garagers out of Pittsburgh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Funky16Corners:

Cynics coming up later on!
Avatar 11:03pm Erica:

Perhaps Larry. Guess they were fans of the show at the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Funky16Corners:

We all were Erica. If it wasn't on TV we traded bootleg VHS tapes of old 60s stuff
Avatar 11:06pm Erica:

That's cool. I know about the Batman show BTW (from TV).
Avatar 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

TDK @10.52 -it's just that i'd seen my favorite 60s bands turn to shit in the mid-70s; then all my favorite punk bands turn to shit fairly quickly.(usually after 1-3 albums. 4 for the cure) by the early 80s i lost faith in "punk rock" and focused mostly on hardcore (and classical music) then the hardcore got kinda boring, + the skinhead element was growing...so i checked out. cultivated an intimate relationship with the shanachie record label!
Avatar 11:08pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh yeah! You guy's were on it!
Avatar 11:10pm Franco Twinkie:

Was Great Jones Street a reference to the book by Don Delillo? Or Just the street it was on.
Avatar 11:10pm coelacanth∅:

Larry is this your band?
it's hot (whether it is or isn't)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - That's where I got the title
Avatar 11:11pm TDK60:

coel- understandable; loved Shanachie's reggae and folk releases, still have some LPs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm Funky16Corners:

@C - Phantom Five 'She's Not' was us
Avatar 11:11pm Franco Twinkie:

Bucky Wunderkin, ha!

Avatar 11:13pm Franco Twinkie:

Of course! I still have my copy.
Avatar 11:13pm Erica:

There are a few bands called the Phantom Five, but look up Phantom Five Great Jones Street and you will find Larry's band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, there was a midwestern band after us that used the name
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Funky16Corners:

There was also a band called Full Fathom Five
Avatar 11:17pm coelacanth∅:

TDK i lived in nj and after paying for shipping once decided to drive to shanachie and pick up the goods. the person in control of the warehouse/ shipping department liked me i guess and always gave me every 5th album for free, and all albums for 8 bucks or less; and she'd throw in some freebies. i'd always go home with between 60 and 90 albums.
excellent blues selection.
Avatar 11:18pm TDK60:

Court Tavern! Got to play there once; from out of state.
Avatar 11:20pm TDK60:

wow, buying direct. what town?
Avatar 11:21pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 11:23pm TDK60:

Oh, I recall the Ho Ho Kus address now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - TURN IT UP!!!
Avatar 11:25pm Franco Twinkie:

My copy is on Ace Of Hearts.
Avatar 11:25pm coelacanth∅:

i think it moved right before i started doing that. it's okay. i'd just pick a beautiful day and take a beautiful drive to the boonies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - The LP was on Ace of Hearts but the French label New Rose issued a 45 in 87
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Funky16Corners:

BTW Ace of Hearts, amazing label
Avatar 11:27pm TDK60:

MissionO.B. on Ace, right?
Avatar 11:28pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry, The first time I saw The Lyres I had the flu and another neighbor dragged me to Al's bar downtown. It was the night Andy Warhol died.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - Yes, Lyres, Neats, Salem 66, Flies etc
Avatar 11:29pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - That may have been a dangerous situation!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm doctorjazz:

In the 90s, my in laws moved not far from Princeton. I'd drop my wife and girls off, and spend the day at the Princeton Record Exchange, with piles of records in my arms. Interestingly, my daughter goes to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), not far, and goes to PREX (the Exchange) and buys cd's...
Avatar 11:30pm TDK60:

ah yeah, have some Salem 66 on tape.
