Options January 18, 2019: Friendly Persuasion welcomes Adam O'Callaghan

Adam swings by the show today lugging a crate of cosmic, moog, funk, disco, and assorted sounds. A multi-tasking mofo, Adam's projects include The Ballroom Blitz Big Band and the Raymond Scott Centennial Tribute Concerts, alongside performing in the Giri Kedaton Gamelan Orchestra and a member of the French-Canadian punk band, Idees Noires (active 3 decades back).

Otis & Adam do the dig!

Hi Otis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Grantbob! Welcome!
  2:57pm Martinibomb:

Hey lookee what time it is.. it's nearly time for Friendly Persuasion
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Otis Fodder:

DJ Sheena on now for the next 3min.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Otis Fodder:

Like previous guest shows, I am programming nothing today. Turning it over to my pal Adam who brought over a crate of vinyl. I'm just the counterpoint on the mic. I dig having guests on the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Rich in Washington:

Hi Otis!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Mr Fab:

so persuade me already!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Jan Turkenburg:

Still tuned in, in Zwollywood, NL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:01pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hello! Dinnertime for me - so have a FANTASTIC show, I'll be listening but silent for a while :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Jan Turkenburg:

I'll be listening as well and as usual quietly sneak out in the third hour, becuase I've become a fragile old man who needs lots of sleep :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm Otis Fodder:

Cheers all, thanks for tuning, clicking in. And totally, for my 5-6 hour ahead friends across the pond.
  3:04pm Martinibomb:

I'm writing a short story about The Wall being erected to hold a gigantic alien life form underground that uses humans for food while listening today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Otis Fodder:

This song could work well for your 'thought/build the wall sequence" MB.
  3:06pm Martinibomb:

When I sell the film rights I'll make sure this song has to be used in the film
Avatar 3:07pm AdamOooh:

We forgot to mention, that was a mysterious skip on the Walter Murphy track.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm Otis Fodder:

We did, that skip was perfect, some sort of food maybe on the vinyl.
Avatar 3:08pm AdamOooh:

Just when we brought it in....E.T. must've been insulted by our comment about the A side and intervened :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

These disco tracks are outstanding!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Otis Fodder:

Funky stuff today 4 sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Otis Fodder:

I love how the photos in the popup player are almost always not the correct cover. Orion is correct. I sorta look forward to see what the player pairs with the track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Mr Fab:

The player is really off during the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Otis Fodder:

I wonder if we upload images to playlists they would change. I find it funny though, it's correct here and there but really funny when funk is playing and country shows up or like prog shows rap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Otis Fodder:

Ha, like this funk track by DON X is showing Englebert Humperdinck. I love it.
Avatar 3:17pm AdamOooh:

Hahahah.....that image is great!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

I just noticed that!!! Fabulous!!!
Avatar 3:18pm AdamOooh:

Maybe there is a Don X cover on the E.H. CD....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Otis Fodder:

If Englebert did a funk record, it might sound like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm DJ GeorgyGirl:

Dad Funk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm Otis Fodder:

Total private press Dad Funk.
Avatar 3:21pm AdamOooh:

I have to admit i'm a bit curious to hear "release me/gotta get release" from Englebert, 59 cents on Amazon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm Otis Fodder:

Gotta get release. Instrumental of Release Me with sexy ooohs?
  3:23pm Brian in VT:

get down, Adam!

Dinner is here so I'm gonna disappear from chat. Phenomenal so far! Thank you :-)
  3:31pm I'm fine:

what did u order out Georgy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm Otis Fodder:

Stair/Wave, like some future outer space aerobic fad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Rich in Washington:

I'm in dire need of Indian food. A bizarre, Curb/Seinfeldian dilemma has us unable to go to our town's only good indian restaurant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm Rich in Washington:

WOW! I'll now look twice at the millions of Bill Gaither Trio records I see when out thrifting. Amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Otis Fodder:

Electro Jesus
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Rich in Washington:

I rarely buy children's gospel records unless it's got a creepy puppet on the cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Otis Fodder:

Here's Joey for example, huh?!
Avatar 3:38pm recordrouletteclub:

That Input/Output song was something else!!
Avatar 3:38pm flipper:

¡Mo' guitarz, yo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Otis Fodder:

Hey Henry, yea it was!
Avatar 3:39pm AdamOooh:

Did they just sing: "we are serving Otis"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Otis Fodder:

If they are, have 'em run to the corner and get me some beer.
  3:41pm Martinibomb:

@Rich now I wanna know about your Larry David Indian restaurant issue. Can you name them here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Otis Fodder:

Me too. No samosa for you!
Avatar 3:43pm AdamOooh:

Whoa, we summoned the king on this one....check the pic.
  3:44pm Martinibomb:

holy shit! elvisssss that's funnny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, it's the only good Indian restaurant in Vancouver, Abhiruchi. Not an issue with the restaurant, nor were we banned for some weird reason.
  3:46pm I'm fine:

thanks for playing Kane Roberts; rock god. I remember his 2nd album coming out in 91, wow, the memrories
  3:47pm Martinibomb:

Oh I've been there. My wife's aunt lives around the corner from it
  3:48pm Martinibomb:

That Kane Roberts is going into my monkey/gorilla mix I've been saving stuff for
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Otis Fodder:

That Gorilla track was killer by Kane. 2 albums, I gotta check 'em out,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Rich in Washington:

I remember Kane Roberts briefly being an Alice Cooper Band guitarist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm Otis Fodder:

I'm starting to want to add Kane to that, if you could have 6 people over for dinner who would you...
  3:51pm I'm fine:

Kane Roberts 2nd album got a review in Metal Hammer magazine; i think it got slated.
Avatar 3:55pm AdamOooh:

Y'all making me hungry...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Otis Fodder:

I have leftover pasta in the fridge and beer to consume after this show, on Don-O's Hour of Crap.
  3:59pm Martinibomb:

@Adam this couscous i'm shoveling into my gob is pretty delicious. Cinnamon/bay leaf/lemon zest
Avatar 4:00pm AdamOooh:

Just found an indian food package in my office! Cold lentils never tasted so good...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Rich in Washington:

Oh yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Otis Fodder:

This Morricone Exorcist cover is nuts.
Avatar 4:06pm recordrouletteclub:

Wow!! Neat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Rich in Washington:

Bless Pickwick Records. I knew I could count on them to cash in on this great Ennio theme!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm Otis Fodder:

Holy hell, I want this record, www.discogs.com...
  4:07pm Martinibomb:

I like the Snakefinger cover of this too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Rich in Washington:

I want to learn this guitar riff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Otis Fodder:

What?! Snakefinger cover. Gotta look that up now.
  4:07pm Martinibomb:

This version is really killer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Rich in Washington:

Oh yeah. It's fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Rich in Washington:

I go back and forth between the original Ennio version or Snakefinger's every Halloween or so.
  4:09pm Martinibomb:

And now you have another choice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Rich in Washington:

It's Magic and Ecstasy on the Snakefinger album. The song's full title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Rich in Washington:

Whoa - this is seriously funky.
Avatar 4:09pm AdamOooh:

Oh man, for a second I thought he was talking about Steve Linnegar's Snakeshed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Otis Fodder:

Snakeshed = Karate Moves!
Avatar 4:15pm AdamOooh:

I just found out while preparing the playlist that Zabadak is a cover, anyone know the original?
  4:16pm I'm fine:

Saragossa Band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm Webhamster Henry:

Hi Persuaders!
Avatar 4:18pm AdamOooh:

That is a cover version also....haven't listened to any of em yet. Original appears to be from 1967...I bet flipper knows this one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm Otis Fodder:

Hey Henry!
Avatar 4:19pm recordrouletteclub:

Man, this song is killer too!!
Avatar 4:21pm recordrouletteclub:

What's up Otis?
Avatar 4:21pm recordrouletteclub:

Oh, different Henry. Never mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Otis Fodder:

Ha, I said hi to Henry(1) earlier and Henry(2) more recent. Waiting for Henry(3).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm Otis Fodder:

Oh and hey/hello... I'm fine and Flipper!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Rich in Washington:

I am Richard <real last name> (3) on Discogs.
Avatar 4:37pm AdamOooh:

Take a shot every time I say wonderful....or funky
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Otis Fodder:

Stop drinking everytime I say, ummmm. You'll die of thirst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm Webhamster Henry:

I should change my handle, now that other Henries are prowling around the chat boards. (Handle <<< 80s terminology)
  4:41pm I'm fine:

Straw Poll, which of the two Starksy & Hutch themes was your fave, 1st one or 2nd one, i mean the original versions
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Webhamster Henry:

"Spelled 'Hen3ry'... the 3 is silent!" -- Prof. Tom Lehrer
Avatar 4:42pm AdamOooh:

we're stumping the album cover locator pretty hard, next time will aim for 100% score on that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm Webhamster Henry:

Nice panerus playing there...
Avatar 4:45pm AdamOooh:

Haven't heard the original 2nd theme, will get back to you on the straw poll. Hoping for a juicy Starsky & Hutch reissue set sometime in the future, such great tunes.
Avatar 4:47pm AdamOooh:

That's balinese gamelan, Schoener did a couple of Bali-themed records, this is the funkiest track, but some really cool jazz-prog stuff too.
  4:48pm I'm fine:

some nice Schoener
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48pm Mr Fab:

Wow, I love gamelan music, but have rarely heard it used in a non-traditional way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm Webhamster Henry:

Check out ooioo then ooioo.jp...
Avatar 4:51pm AdamOooh:

Check out the live Schoener performance on youtube, full prog band and gamelan orchestra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Webhamster Henry:

The Gamelan I'm in does some originals, but not covers and usually not mixed with non-traditional instruments, although there is an occasional accordion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm Rich in Washington:

Have you heard Gamelan X, Mr. Fab? I think they're out of Seattle, but I'm not sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:53pm Rich in Washington:

There's a Gamelan ensemble here in Portland that's got a couple of my KBOO DJ pals in it.
  4:56pm I'm fine:

new direction for New Found Glory
Avatar 4:57pm AdamOooh:

Girl Kedaton here in Montreal released a record (Bali X) before I joined that blends various styles with Gamelan. The best track is an epic metal tune called Jembatan metal.
Avatar 5:05pm flipper:

I actually heard a couple versions of Zabadak. Goes back to mid-Sixties, England probably... (delayed response, I was out for a bit
Avatar 5:07pm AdamOooh:

I knew you would know that one! Original appears to be: Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick And Tich from 1967.
Avatar 5:08pm flipper:

Brit band, yeah?
  5:11pm I'm fine:

youve never heard of Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Titch?????? Im shocked; very famous here
Avatar 5:12pm AdamOooh:

British I think so....featured on the 1967 Boxing Day episode of Top of the Pops.

A Gambang is in fact a xylophone (wooden mallet instrument).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Rich in Washington:

Oh, I love this album! It's also got a track by The Mothers of Invention's Don Preston.
Avatar 5:20pm AdamOooh:

Yes had a feeling I misspoke on that subject, thanks Henry.
Avatar 5:20pm AdamOooh:

You ok Otis? Hope you didn't take me up on that drinking game....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:21pm Mr Fab:

Do not know Gamelan X. Looks great, thx!

Have any Balinese musicians ever covered "Bali Hai" (har har?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Rich in Washington:

I found this album on cassette in a cutout bin when I was a kid. I think I still have the tape, but managed to track down the LP many years later.
Avatar 5:26pm AdamOooh:

Great comp indeed. Worth it for the Cima tracks alone, but all good and quality pressing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Rich in Washington:

Wow! This is amazing!
  5:31pm Martinibomb:

Thanks for lugging all these great tunes over to Otis's -- Adam
Avatar 5:32pm AdamOooh:

Thanks for listening! Happy to have some gamelan lovers on the thread here. Good to take the records out of the cave once in a while.
Avatar 5:34pm Don-O:

This is Love Unlimited?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm Mr Fab:

had no idea Barry White went New Wave!
Avatar 5:36pm AdamOooh:

Yep when he downsized the band to a few synths.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm Otis Fodder:

I was with you Adam when you found the Barry White electro record at the small fair, and I said, oh nooo man, that's gotta suck. I was WRONG.
Avatar 5:39pm AdamOooh:

It sits right on the edge of wrong, just where we like it.

Thanks for a wonderful show, Otis and Adam! Lotsa fun!
I'm gonna go brew up a cup of tea before Don-O's show....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Mr Fab:

Norman Salant was a San Fran new wave era sax man, think he played with folks like Snakefinger (speaking of which). He just put up all his stuff on Bandcamp last month coincidentally.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Otis Fodder:

Rich, I am doing the same thing. Green here.
Avatar 5:55pm AdamOooh:

Wow, after Don-X...Don-O...amazing!
Avatar 5:56pm Don-O:
