When I was a kid, my family's cats were Ursula (named by my mom after Ursula K. LeGuin) and Smokey Joe (named by my dad after the Coasters song). We also had Mel, but I think my parents just thought that was a funny name for a cat.

TheLoneliestMonk: Well, to be fair WFMU is the kind of place where “The Hudson Brothers” would be put on a higher pedestal than Tony Orlando… Unless Tony Orlando suddenly had a Numero group comp out.

Which is all to say I like ”Tony Orlando and Dawn” and don’t suffer contrarian hipster nonsense.

“Let’s Save Tony Orlando's House” is a Simpson’s reference. It was a telethon in the Simpsons world. James McNew of YLT likes to name tracks in progress with wacky nonsense and then usually the names changed when finalized. This song name just went as-is to the LP.

Captains were really big in the 70s: Grand Funk’s “I’m Your Captain,” the Doobie Bros’ “The Captain and Me,” and Elton John’s Captain Fantastic, not to mention the toast of 1975, the Captain and Tennille, and Billy Joel’s “Captain Jack.” Perhaps the curdled end of the ’60s reaped the need for a steady, manly guide at the helm: a captain, if you will.

i'm glad, in the end, that the coasters declined this song at first; maybe we wouldn't have gotten the funky later version if they'd done it in '59, or whenever.

"Hey, you know what's really great for a hangover?"
"No, what?"
Avatar 11:18am Jeff Moore:

I like that Coasters version of "Love Potion..."! It's definitely funner than the bog-standard Searchers version I went with in my "Behind the Whipped Cream" set a few weeks ago – but I guess it wouldn't have fit with the conceit of the set, because it didn't predate the Herb Alpert rendition.

Joe McG, check out Ween's Cold Blows the Wind. It's their version of an old English folk song called, The Unquiet Grave. A great story song.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am GeorgeSimian:

So the bottle metaphor makes sense, if you think about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Ike:

IMHO "Outlandos d'Amour" is a stronger album overall. "Reggatta" is their second one. It's also good but has more filler than the first one.
Avatar 11:50am Sem:

Hunter Thompson used to troll the Hell's Angels he rode w/ by claiming to have a Vincent Black Shadow; they called bullshit on him \0/

Thanks Joe . Millie’s always warm on a chilly day.
