This week:

Kimzilla and Emily decide that it’s time to go hunting for that big story. Furries! This episode is too good to fit in one hour, so it’s going to be broken up into two parts. Tonight we talk to Dan the Furry, Dr. Samuel Conway aka Uncle Kage, the chairman and chief organizer of Anthrocon and Fox Amoore a composer and pianist, who plays in a full fursuit! Next week we talk to Dr. Sharon Roberts who is a researcher that is focused on the science behind Anthropomorphism.

Is heat stroke a problem for this community? I think that's the pressing issue here...
Avatar 7:03pm JakeGould:

@dale: It’s full grown adults who like to dress up in fur suits and do things.

Avatar 7:06pm dale:

do the fur suits get sticky?
  7:08pm Listener Robert:

Our friend Andrew told me about furries 20 years ago or more, but it was our friend John who put me on to the C.S.I. episode that was a long buildup to the concluding line, "This was a case of fur and loathing in Las Vegas." So a shaggy dog story, another pun at a very high level of abstraction.

But it wasn't the only shaggy dog TV episode. There was the "3rd Rock from the Sun" entry that was a long buildup to a Village People gag as the closing shot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Ken From Hyde Park:

A show about college sports teams' mascots, then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm melinda:

I was hoping we'd hear from Furries at some point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Oh yeah. Happy New Year, lifers!

Happy New Year, Lifers!
Ken from HP—thank you so much for all the lovely treats you sent. We feel so cared for!

We've seen Furries at the Pagan Festival in Raleigh, NC. There's even a group that meet at a local park.

  7:18pm Emily:

Kate: you’ve probably seen Uncle Kage, then! He’s from RTP!
  7:19pm kimzilla:

I love his voice. I could edit him all day, oh wait, I did!

Illegally parked outside Newark airport terminal b, enjoying the show quite a lot .Ah, people and their interests.
  7:20pm kimzilla:

I never got to the bottom of why there are sooo many foxes.
  7:21pm dez:

I plan on using 'back when that meant something' more often
Avatar 7:21pm JakeGould:

I was gonna say I don’t want my tax dollars paying for furries.

@dez oh absolutely

  7:22pm Kate:

@ Emily, I'm pretty sure I haven't seen a cockroach. I think I'd remember that....
  7:23pm Emily:

@Tommy Yes!!!
Avatar 7:23pm Dr. Roberts:

We have a lot of research to support that! People are often furries before they know what a furry is!

Hello! Sorry I'm late to this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Tommy in Neversink:

He doesn't seem like a cockroach to me
  7:26pm Emily:

Hi Richard! Better late than never! Happy to have you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Tommy in Neversink:

He should be a racoon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Julie:

There are some very realistic bird costumes out there. People on FB bird groups are always fighting about whether it's okay to show them or not.
  7:27pm Kate:

@ Tommy, his voice is a little cockroachy to me, but otherwise, I agree.
Avatar 7:27pm Dr. Roberts:

Thank you!
I also like hearing what Uncle Kage has to say; it's always fun to have a conversation with Dr. Conway.
  7:29pm dez:

expertly answered!
Avatar 7:29pm Dr. Roberts:

At Anthrocon 2018, Dr. Gerbasi, Dr. Conway, and I sat down to have a conversation about the fandom (panel). It was a lot of fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Ken From Hyde Park:

"You work in the Fermi Lab? Nuclear research, how exciting!"
"No, the furry lab. With people in animal costumes."

  7:35pm Kate:

The picture on the Anthrocon homepage shows an enormous variety, but I don't see any cockroaches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Emily - So happy you enjoyed the package. The tracking website was showing a Saturday delivery, but it arrived on a Friday. It's helpful that the station is next to the post office.
  7:36pm Kate:

Do you have a picture of him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm melinda:

@JeremyB haha

Finally figured out which button to click to get here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Tommy in Neversink:

I think this dressing up as something you're not is just out of control
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Julie:

You're right, Tommy. People should stop wearing suits and ties to work, they aren't fooling anyone.
Avatar 7:42pm kimzilla:

Welcome British Fox, is this Fox Amoore, or a different British fox?
  7:43pm A British Fox:

A different fox, I'm afraid. I hugged him once though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Tommy in Neversink:

Julie...An attempt at sarcasm ..note my photo
  7:44pm Emily:

Welcome all the same, British Fox!
  7:45pm Emily:

Hahah @ Tommy I just noticed your photo and I thought so!
  7:45pm kimzilla:

So true. I just watched Watership Down. Damn.
Avatar 7:46pm Dr. Roberts:

@Tommy Only about 20% of furries have fursuits. They would wear them to conventions, or parades, or perhaps to a meet-up where they take over a bowling alley (with permission of the owners/management), but that would be about it. Furries go about their lives like everyone else sans fursuit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Julie:

@Tommy good to know. You look like several friends of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Julie:

Wait if you don't have a fursuit how are you a furry? Does that make you a furry afficianado or something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm melinda:

I'm starting to see the appeal of Furry fandom. Books featuring anthropomorphized animals were always my favorite as a kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Tommy in Neversink:

Dr Roberts..it was a joke... ..I'm being critical of furries while in drag ..get it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm ultradamno:

Can someone furry be a furry? www.wallpaperup.com...
Avatar 7:48pm Dr. Roberts:

@Richard Can one consider furries to be a variation of cosplay?
Yes, but because of the self-created identity component (furries make their own characters), it has significant benefits for identity formation, which is a associated with all kinds of developmental benefits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm melinda:

@Julie I think it's about creating a character, even if you don't dress up as the character.
Avatar 7:49pm Dr. Roberts:

@tommy Sorry, didn't see the picture
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Tommy in Neversink:

My daughter was involved in cosplay , went to a convention with her . I thought it was very beautiful
  7:50pm Emily:

@melinda, well said! That is the impression I came away with—which isn’t what I thought at all. I assumed they all wore fur suits! I just thought that was the whole thing.
  7:50pm kimzilla:

I love playing pretend, doing improv skits and that doesn’t need costumes. But it sure would make it more fun. Ask Emily about me borrowing a lion head. I was a different person.
  7:50pm A British Fox:

We're always recruiting. Join the fluffy armada today. Suit optional.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Richard S:

Thanks for the answer, Dr. Roberts!
Avatar 7:52pm Dr. Roberts:

@Richard It's my job ;-) It's my awesome job!
  7:52pm Emily:

Kim’s right. Her lion character is a totally different animal! She’s a expert pretender.
  7:52pm Emily:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Tommy in Neversink:

Pretending to be some other identity is very mentally healthy IMO. You kind of leave all the stresses and negativity of your primary identity behind for a while
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Tommy in Neversink:

This is what happens in the rituals of aboriginal cultures. Gets people out of themselves
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm melinda:

@Emily I started out thinking of it as a fur suit thing too.
Avatar 7:56pm Dr. Roberts:

@Tommy, yes we have documented the benefits of fantasy. We distinguish between fantasy (what furries typically do, which is taking a limited break) and escapism, of course. We have a longitudinal study examining the changes over time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Richard S:

As long as you remember that the secondary persona is SECONDARY, and Not Real, I suppose. Don't want people going delusional....
  7:57pm Kate:

I think people who write fiction experience the non-costumed version of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Tommy in Neversink:

INteresting ..DR R
  7:58pm A British Fox:

Foxes IN boxes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Tommy in Neversink:

I don't' think there is much danger of that ....Richard
Avatar 7:59pm Dr. Roberts:

@Richard and yes that is the case.

People often admire a specific species (characteristics and aesthetics). Foxes and wolves and hybrids are common.
  8:00pm A British Fox:

We come in packs of twelve. Once you've handed out the spare fursonas to your friends, there's foxes everywhere. We can't help it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Richard S:

See you next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Great show, he said furtively.
Avatar 8:01pm Kate:

Great show!
Avatar 8:02pm Dr. Roberts:

Next week: I teach a class at that time. Should I end my class early? Make my students listen to the interview live? Lol!

Nice work on this project! :-)
