Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm Funky16Corners:

NOTHING is sadder than I Started a Joke
Avatar 12:10pm coelacanth∅:

...and anyway my voice probably sounds funny cuz i just woke up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm chresti:

I can't possibly sit on a sofa with that Kinks song playing
  12:10pm dan:

Robin Gibb is the sad Bee Gee
Avatar 12:11pm hyde:

i mean, any rock song with harpsichord makes me sad just because it's a rock song with harpsichord
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Stanley:

Avatar 12:13pm coelacanth∅:

Larry that's my favorite bee gees song and i think the saddest but i could see how some might say it's so sad it's not sad anymore.
Avatar 12:14pm βrian:

@coelacanth∅: You've surfaced? I'm sure your voice sounds more natural at a depth of 600 feet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Funky16Corners:

@C - It almost passes through itself into a whole 'nother place
  12:14pm Dean:

Now I'm wondering whether anybody requested "Born to Run" or "Heavy Metal," just to be mean.
Avatar 12:14pm Jeff Moore:

Was Mr. Scruff the source of the original music used for Weebl and Bob back when they first burst on the scene? I think there's been a music substitution in later W&B re-releases, to their detriment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Webhamster Henry:

Attention, Hinky Dinky Shoppers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Scraps:

new york mining disaster probably has the highest death toll, anyway

  12:21pm Doug Schulkind:

I’m listening from bed on the FMU app, which doesn’t show who is requesting which songs. Is that presented on the playlist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Stanley:

Thanks coel - I hope others also called in, so we can put a voice to the name
  12:21pm dan:

  12:24pm dan:

This Allen Ginsberg poem reminds me of the Food song:

Eat Eat more marbled Sirloin more Pork 'n
Lard up the dressing, fry chicken in
boiling oil
Carry it dribbling to gray climes, snowed with
Little lambs covered with mint roast in rack
surrounded by roast potatoes wet with
Buttered veal medallions in creamy saliva
buttered beef, glistening mountains
of french fries
Stroganoffs in white hot sour cream, chops
soaked in olive oil
surrounded by olives, salty feta cheese, followed
by Roquefort & Bleu & Stilton
for wine, beer Cocacola Fanta Champagne
Pepsi retsina arak whiskey vodka
Agh! Watch out heart attack, pop more
angina pills
order a plate of Bratwurst, fried frankfurters,
couple billion Wimpys', MacDonald burger
to the moon & burp!
Salt on those fries! Boil onions
& breaded mushrooms even zucchini
in deep hot Crisco pans
Turkeys die only once,
look nice, next to tall white glasses
sugarmilk & icecream vanilla balls
Strawberrry for sweeter color milkshakes
with hot dogs
Forget greenbeans, everyday a few carrots,
a mini big spoonful of salty rice'll
do, make the plate pretty;
throw in some vinegar pickles, briney sauerkraut
check yr. cholesterol, swallow a pill
and order a sugar Cream donut, pack 2 under
the size 44 belt
Pass out in the vomitorium come back cough
up strands of sandwich still chewing
pastrami at Katz's delicatessen
Back to central Europe & gobble Kielbasa
in Lodz
swallow salami in Munich with beer,Liverwurst
on pumpernickel in Berlin, greasy cheese in
a 3 star Hotel near Syntagma, on white
bread thick-buttered
Set an example for developing nations, salt,
sugar, animal fat, coffee tobacco Schnapps
Drop dead faster! make room for
Chinese guestworkers with alien soybean
curds green cabbage & rice!
Africans Latins with rice beans & calabash can
stay thin & crowd in apartments for working
class foodfreaks —

Not like western cuisine rich in protein
cancer heart attack hypertension sweat
bloated liver & spleen megaly
Diabetes & stroke — monuments to carnivorous
presently murdering Belfast
Bosnia Cypress Ngorno Karabach Georgia
mailing love letter bombs in
Vienna or setting houses afire
in East Germany — have another coffee,
here's a cigar.
And this is a plate of black forest chocolate cake,
you deserve it.
  12:25pm Dean:

That Ginsberg lyric reminds me of the Nihilist Spasm Band tune about eating meat.
Avatar 12:25pm βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Ken From Hyde Park:

My good deed for the day was to post a link here on the Wake & Bake comments board this morning. Let's see if any Glisteners made last-minute requests.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm melinda:

Sounds like Sesame St. jazz, one of my favorite types.
  12:29pm Dean:

Most of us are rather demure. I should have outsourced a voice message to my daughter.
  12:30pm dan:

Thanks UM. Elliott Murphy is a recent discovery of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Asheville Jon:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm melinda:

I left a message on the Wake & Bake machine once and was alarmed when it was aired later and realized it was me. Barely awake and there I was being piped into my own ears thru headphones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Parq:

Wow, I had no idea this was Mould until I looked at the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Lizardner Dave Somethingorother:

The Mould single dropped at the end of October but the album isn't out until February. He's playing some shows with Titus Andronicus opening including one in Brooklyn where I expect to lose what's left of my hearing.

how can a friend be so unkind?
  12:42pm Dean:

That's cool, Franco. I've love The Pop! since, well, 1977. One of them formed The Motels, no? Or am I confusing with another band?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Mark Hurst:

Happy new year, UM & fellow listeners!
  12:48pm Dean:

A month or so ago I picked up a compilation of Yusef albums on the questionable Real Gone Jazz label. It is sublime from top to bottom.
Avatar 12:49pm coelacanth∅:

nice Choice Ken
  12:50pm dan:

The Haden triplets are like a familial version of Sandy Denny, Linda Thompson and Maddy Prior.
  12:50pm Mark R.:

Is it called "Every Village Has a Song," Dean? Are these Haden triplets related to Charlie Haden by any chance, Michael?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Glad to hear you folks liked that.
Avatar 12:51pm Brian in UK:

If anyone likes the Hadens try this. LATER.
  12:51pm dan:

@Mark R

His daughters
  12:52pm Mark R.:

Wo in addition to Petra, huh? And I know when Charlie was a boy, he and his family had kind of a country radio show. So it's really in the blood, isn't it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm melinda:

Avatar 12:52pm coelacanth∅:

great Nilsson tune here!
i like the dialogue at the end
  12:52pm Dean:

It's called "Eight Classic Albums," Mark R. Four disks, ran me twelve bucks. I say the label is questionable, because I'm not confident they acquire rights to reproduce the tracks. No liner notes, but sonic production values are good.
  12:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Those are some of Yusef’s Savoy, Prestige and Riverside releases. All sublime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Tanya Haden is married to Jack Black from Tenacious D.
Avatar 12:53pm coelacanth∅:

Here’s something spooky. I saw a flyer for the Haden Triplets for some concert. The description said that they were the daughters of Charlie Haden, whom hitherto I’d never heard of. I looked him up and was impressed with his credits. The very next day, Charlie Haden died.

That Minaj song sounds good to me. first time i heard it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm jmd:

I have plenty of time

'The Blue Mask' ~ Some of the sickest Lou Reed I have heard so far...
Thanks Uncle!
  2:48pm chresti:

Liked the Minaj track, Jeff.

This has been fun, thanks Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm doctorjazz:

Great show, thanks UM!
  2:52pm Dean:

A question about protocol for future request shows: Suppose two listeners independently request the same song and only that song. Do you play it once and credit both listeners or do you play it twice?
Avatar 2:52pm Sem:

Thank you, KfBR, for that wisdom and insight.
Avatar 2:52pm coelacanth∅:

i didn't turn my nose up at that track, i just don't want to hear eminem talking at me. i'd probably have listened further if he weren't there. i don't even know what the song sounded like after 2 seconds into him coming in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Parq:

If I understand the point of this song, it's that he's going down the road feeling bad.
Avatar 2:53pm coelacanth∅:

...maybe i'll go listen to it again.
Avatar 2:54pm Sem:

DrJ: unexpected choice, but delighted to hear it.

Thanks, UM, for hosting this salon today. Favourited, 'natch. See you and at least some of you, next time.
Avatar 2:54pm Brian in UK:

Thanks Uncle.

To the future and all the tracks yet to be recorded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Stanley 2:38,
Thanks so much. Great that you remember( guess my avatar comes into play!).
  2:55pm Dean:

I think you nailed it, Parq. Of course, "goin' down" is purely idiomatic. He's not literally descending.
Avatar 2:55pm Listening Out There:

@Parq: Insightful analysis, as always...
Avatar 2:55pm Franco Twinkie:

I get a lot of "You look like Jerry Garcia" It get's tedious. Yesterday at Amoeba on Haight Street the guy at the information desk said " You look like..." and I thought here it comes, but he surprises me and said "...This guy I know who drives a cab."

I once got a "You look like Quentin Tarantino." Had to look him up, since I didn't know what he looked like. Not really.
  2:57pm dan:

Great show. Can’t wait for next year’s all request show
  2:57pm Dean:

Well, well. Two songs this year featuring Robert Quine?
Avatar 2:57pm coelacanth∅:

my alternate request would've sounded good after this song.
Avatar 2:58pm burke:

Dylan cover! Really good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @UM!
Avatar 2:59pm glenn:

i usually get "you look like jabba the hutt"

This show is why the Internet was invented.
Avatar 3:00pm Jeff Moore:

Yeah, back on the subject of Warm Leatherette – how many of us first heard it from Grace Jones (holds up hand)

But when I heard the original it grew on me fast.

Is it pretty much established that the song was inspired by the J. G. Ballard book?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Stanley:

Terrific fun. Great choices.
Thanks listeners. Thanks Uncle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Scraps:

i used to get the i looked like Moby. Then several time I went to parties he was at, and the first time he looked at me several times like, what the fuck?

Warm Leatherette came out during my college radio days. My fellow DJs played endlessly. I stuck with the jazz.
