Whippette, whippette good.

Hello, Jeff, all.

I'll take some honey and whipped cream on my tangerine, but not on my green peppers, please.
  12:07pm Robert Tables:

Hey there Jeff and listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm chresti:

What does lie behind the whipped cream?
Avatar 12:10pm still b/p:

Behind/under the whipped cream was the stuff of many a 1960s schoolboy's fever-y fascinations.
Avatar 12:10pm Sem:

@chresti: "During the 19th century, William James and many contemporaries found that inhalation of nitrous oxide resulted in a powerful spiritual and mystical experience for the user. James claimed to experience the fusing of dichotomies into a unity and a revelation of ultimate truth during the inhalation of nitrous oxide." via wikithingy.

Racing off to work. Have big fun, Jeff and Jeff people!
  12:16pm rw:

Weird. I was listening to Trini Lopez last night. So, Sem, that which lies behind the whipped cream is the fusing of dichotomies and a revelation of ultimate truth?
Avatar 12:17pm Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff, in the spotlight, well done.

  12:20pm Listener Gregory:

I remember thinking that that Whipped Cream album cover was the raciest thing I had ever seen. I was quite young.
  12:21pm Marie:

I love this. I used to eat whole bowls of whipped cream when I was a kid--foregoing ice cream at ice cream shops and whipping it up at home too.
  12:22pm rw:

Gregory, this is a pretty great google search: https://www.google.com/search?q=whipped+cream+and+other+delights&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi6s-bPt7HfAhVUIDQIHSSoBmgQ_AUIDigB&biw=2112&bih=1213

I have the Whipped Cream album but haven't been able to listen, what treats are in store when I get my turntable fixed and set up!
Avatar 12:23pm Franco Twinkie:

Hi Jeff! This is a nice break from the Christmas show syrup I have been gorging on the last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm annie:

wow!!!!! i know this album bacwards and forwatds;one of the first i ever bought! please say you're playing the whole thing!..... well, bummer... i had tojumpinto the comments to say i knew what this was!!! after...what.. 50 years?
  12:24pm Marie:

Melinda, that sounds like fun. I'm thinking about getting an old stle
pop-up player with built in speakers...
Avatar 12:25pm βrian:

I once put a strained purée of raspberries infused with cardamom along with the cream in the canister with a little maple syrup. It had a wonderful flavor and a beautiful color.
Avatar 12:25pm coelacanth∅:

hmm what's that behind the whipped cream?
Avatar 12:26pm coelacanth∅:

hey Jeff Moore and others
  12:27pm Listener Gregory:

Wow! Thanks @rw. Though perhaps I had been better off not knowing about the cover of Cecilia and Her Sauerkrauts.
  12:27pm rw:

Hey coel. I heard it was the fusing of dichotomies but we'll find out for sure by the end of the show.
Avatar 12:28pm still b/p:

Surprised my strict very Catholic parents didn't say back in the day, "Stop staring at that album cover!"
Or, "Stop reading βrian's indecent descriptions of whipped cream fantasies!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm annie:

i'm having fond memories of that great AM station "The Music of Your LIfe".....late night radio.... i guess i was born old..
Avatar 12:32pm still b/p:

This song is always tempting to borrow for spoofing and alternative lyrics, but not sure how many people know it or would get it.
Avatar 12:33pm βrian:

I had strict Catholic parents. I always assumed our purported beliefs were really just a polite fiction. At some point, I remember the shock of finding out that, yes, they really did believe. That took all of the fun out for me.
Avatar 12:34pm still b/p:

Pot up?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm annie:

no,this is the best of "Dead Air"..

Avatar 12:38pm Jeff Moore:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm annie:

jeff must have a new copy of the stalling tape
Avatar 12:39pm still b/p:

If next mic break was the same, we'd have to....release the Nudging Drone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm annie:

oh no!!! not the Nudging Drone!
Avatar 12:42pm βrian:

I'm imagining a drone with attached canister deploying an embracing cone of whipped cream around the DJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm annie:

this is WAY too much fun!
Avatar 12:43pm still b/p:

Whipped Cream and Other Deployments.
Avatar 12:44pm βrian:

Rattle would make for "hold" background music. Compelling and not cloying or demanding.
Avatar 12:44pm coelacanth∅:

so THAT'S whats behind the whipped cream. a double agent.
Avatar 12:45pm Jeff Moore:

THAT mic fader OVER THERE is the one I need. Got it.
Avatar 12:45pm still b/p:

The Can Who Came In From The Cold.
Avatar 12:47pm coelacanth∅:

βrian that would be a dream, come true. (at least i would've thought that last night when i was on hold for a total of about 32 minutes on a 40 minute phone call with ebay.)
Avatar 12:48pm Jeff Moore:

So maybe I'll back-announce the first set, too, at the next break. And re-say all those nice upcoming events!

Avatar 12:49pm βrian:

Only the events outside of the N.E. U.S., though.
Avatar 12:50pm Jeff Moore:

Q: What performance from 1938 rocks harder than... basically anything ever since?

A: we get to listen to it now!
Avatar 12:52pm coelacanth∅:

i liked Benny Goodman as a child. my first jazz passion.
Avatar 12:53pm still b/p:

And from Benny, so straight and strict, yet he opens the outfit up so kickass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Fox:

I'm late! Hellooooooo.
Avatar 12:57pm coelacanth∅:

i think that appearance was a facade. he certainly didn't shy from breaking society norms at the time.
Avatar 1:00pm Jeff Moore:

Is that Teddy Wilson?
Avatar 1:00pm still b/p:

As the noted and harsh disciplinarian, though, it's like a nun keeping severe menacing order one moment and encouraging wild launches and humping of primal spirits the next.
Avatar 1:01pm Jeff Moore:

I mean, come ON!
  1:05pm Listener Robert:

I don't know what you just did, but now the volume's normal again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm chresti:

Thanks for the clarinet
Avatar 1:05pm Jeff Moore:

@still b/p: Now I'm picturing a wild launch - a pretty staid-looking boat, but with a big mouth full of sharp teeth in the bow!
Avatar 1:06pm coelacanth∅:

i guess there's that. but then ...Captain Beefheart; Neil Young; Cecil Taylor...(etc) all very strict and maybe difficult (or cruel, in beefheart's case) to work with, but the seemingly wild abandon that results...maybe because of that?
Avatar 1:06pm Jeff Moore:

@chresti: Glad you like it. Good thing, because...
  1:07pm Listener Robert:

Clarinet? We just had fuckin' Benny Goodman! Only couldn't hear it because of volume problem.
Avatar 1:07pm coelacanth∅:

...i guess i'm thinking more of his "innovations" in the racial integration department when i say he broke the rules.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm melinda:

I love the clarinet too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm chresti:

James Brown was also a very strict bandleader
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm doctorjazz:

A bit of holiday Klezmer, cool!
Avatar 1:09pm coelacanth∅:

one of the best examples chresti!
Avatar 1:09pm still b/p:

Brown...hit knuckles with the money stick, yeah? Mess up and you are FINED!
Avatar 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

yeah he was at least as bad as beefheart, i guess. Beefheart was more of a mind-fucker; submission and bondage.
Avatar 1:17pm coelacanth∅:

Mingus was pretty terrible too.
(and of course spector but he was/is certifiably nuts)
Avatar 1:21pm βrian:

Four hours until solstice ...
Avatar 1:21pm Franco Twinkie:

My nomination is Arthur Lee for horrible/brilliant band leader.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Michael 98145:

yes. winter is terrible. but Spring is on the way ☀

Avatar 1:30pm coelacanth∅:

Franco maybe you know something i don't. i've read about some shitty things Lee did but not on the level of JB, Mingus or Beefheart.
(...do i want to know?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Michael 98145:

i couldn't control myself
Avatar 1:32pm coelacanth∅:

i'm excited for it too

Avatar 1:39pm coelacanth∅:

haha true Michael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Michael 98145:

up here in the dark north, a bonfire would be welcome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm Doug Schulkind:

Why, I was just warbling about J.J. Johnson earlier today!
Avatar 1:42pm coelacanth∅:

i was just thinking about a friend of the past who sent christmas cards that always said "Jesus is the reason for the season" and how that's not true. he was imported to this season for power gain... so really Jesus is sort of a casualty of imperialism.
Avatar 1:43pm Franco Twinkie:

Coel, As one scribe put it, Arthur was a law unto himself. But aside from that, having seen many iterations of Love, talked with people who had a front row seat to the craziness, I come to my own conclusions.
Avatar 1:43pm coelacanth∅:

good to hear someone else (beside Irwin) play Lee Morgan too
Avatar 1:43pm Jeff Moore:

@Doug: Great minds! ...and mine, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Michael 98145:

what coel just said
Avatar 1:46pm coelacanth∅:

Franco i can't doubt it,right? he was kind of a dick when came time to record forever changes; and then exposed his racist side in the 70s.
Avatar 1:50pm coelacanth∅:

(or, he was just pandering to the racist pressures of the panthers; but one of his heroes and supposed friends, Jimi Hendrix, resisted the panthers, Alvin could've)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Doug Schulkind:

I've been hearing upsetting news that Barry Harris was in intensive care recently. I hope he is doing better.
Avatar 1:56pm Franco Twinkie:

From an early age I held both Arthur Lee and Don Van Vliet in high regard, and despite all the less than flattering crap I've heard about both of them, I still cherish the music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Oh, and in Lee Morgan news, he recorded The Sidewinder 55 years ago today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Michael 98145:

can't say i have heard any Lee Morgan track i have not appreciated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Er, 55 years ago Monday that is.
Avatar 1:59pm Jeff Moore:

Aw, jeez - I do hope Mr. Harris does better.
Avatar 2:01pm coelacanth∅:

i hope so too. i didn't see anything about it. he's "up there" though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Michael 98145:

{ also, last time the full moon falls on the winter solstice for many decades }
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm melinda:

It is a dreary solstice here, dark skies and flood warnings. At least I don't have to go anywhere today and I have good tunes here.
Avatar 2:02pm Jeff Moore:

Now I want a big plate of picadillo.
Avatar 2:04pm coelacanth∅:

Franco -same. (well i haven't always liked Beefheart, and still don't like everything he did...but i greatly appreciate both of them)

Michael i agree about Lee Morgan
  2:04pm βrian:

I've plenty of peccadillos to spare, if that would do.
Avatar 2:05pm Jeff Moore:

Do they go with rice?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm melinda:

I should make picadillo. Trying to get out of a food rut, made Ethiopian lentils last night, yum-E!
Avatar 2:09pm βrian:

I've been on a wakame soup jag, lately. Really satisfying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Michael 98145:

{ having recently been in the Czech Republic, thank you! }
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm chresti:

...now how to get some?
  2:18pm Andy the painter:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Michael 98145:

from the wiki-web : "After becoming deaf, Smetana moved in 1876 from Prague to Jabkenice. He still hoped that the handicap would not be permanent. In the autumn of that year, he began to compose a new work. It was to be his intimate confession, a work depicting the course of his life, '... using four instruments speaking among themselves in something like a friendly circle'."
Avatar 2:29pm Jeff Moore:

He hoped it would not be permanant, but the syphilis had other ideas.

Avatar 2:41pm Jeff Moore:

Ground beef plus spices and other good stuff, is what I know it as.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm chresti:

...or maybe it's stir fried w/egg, also. Franco get's a burrito that he says is piccadillo
Avatar 2:43pm coelacanth∅:
