Pretty jazzed for this foray into current affairs. Grill Murphy about the state of NJT, please. Also interested on his views on Taylor ham.
  3:06pm clarke:

checkin' in from the cape of cod, ya'll. gotta head out soon, but hopefully will be back for some of the end of the show - nice start, though....!!!

I predict that you will play music, do an interview and have live in studio musical guests!

Avatar 3:09pm Hoboken Jack:

In honor of the governor appearing, I am actually wearing pants to listen to today's show.
  3:10pm BetsyO:

Yeah,... great to hear Fred Sonic Smith on the radio airways again!!!
  3:10pm David in London:

I absolutely frackin’ love City Slang. Thanks TOPT.
Avatar 3:11pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Hoboken Jack: Now I'm honored. I hope they aren't Santa pants.
  3:13pm clarke:

i get the feeling they are santa pants.
Avatar 3:13pm On the Yazoo:

Hello everyone.
  3:14pm DaveinPA:

  3:14pm clarke:

tyranny AND mutilation!!
  3:15pm Peter from Dover NJ:

Awesome way to open the how, Todd. I got to see Sonic's Rendezvous Band at a dive bar outside Ann Arbor MI back in the day.
  3:15pm BetsyO:

Funny how it works, whenever The Sonic Rendezvous Band plays on the radio, I actually lose the pants!
  3:17pm clarke:

was that bar in Ypsilanti, MI by chance??
  3:19pm buddha o phonic:

Hi folks!
  3:22pm clarke:

man, Sweet definitely had the BBC studio shit FIGURED OUT sonically!!!
  3:23pm BetsyO:

I was lucky enough to Sonic’s Rendezvous play at Bookie’s and Ford Auditorium in Detroit, not to mention the MC5 at the Grande Ballroom when Fred was with his musical brothers,... all special memories from a unique time.
  3:23pm David in London:

@Peter from Dover. That must have been phenomenal. Until the advent of a certain video sharing app, common lore always said that The MC5 has only played once in England. Then footage emerged of them live in Aylesbury, near where I grew up, and it’s absolute killer. Tyner even changes the lyrics of Tonight to be “Gotta get down in Aylesbury.” Sadly I was only 4 and so didn’t go. Sigh.
  3:25pm clarke:

they generally frowned upon four-year-olds at rockshows back then.
  3:31pm Rick G:

Listening today in memory of “DJ Adjective” (Steve Fisch), a fixture in the Santa Ana and Costa Mesa CA area for years, who passed away Thursday. Thanks for your show-it’s a weekly highlight.
Avatar 3:36pm treadstone:

damn! I missed the blue oyster tune.
Avatar 3:37pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@treadstone: You snooze, you lose.
  3:38pm clarke:

you tread you bled
  3:39pm clarke:

this is tyranny without any mutilation
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I thot of this album as 'Blonde On Blonde' - Xs - 'Magical Mystery Tour'.
Whadaya think?
Avatar 3:43pm treadstone:

Its cool Todd, its now added to my Spotify oyster playlist with every other oyster tune I've heard on wfmu.
  3:44pm clarke:

that's mutilation without tyranny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm JohnEBGood:

Happy Hollidays Todd. Hey BetsyO, I love the master Elmore Leonards' novels. We all here the music of Detroit. Leonard scribes the scenes. My favorite author. Did you read PAGAN BABIES?
  3:45pm Andrew in Etobicoke:

Hey John,

Elmore is still the king!!!

Cannonball for Mr Leonard.
Avatar 3:46pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@JohnEBGood: I don't think I read "Pagan Babies" but I once asked Elmore at a book fair about seeing The MC5.
  3:47pm SeanG:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm JohnEBGood:

Oh yeah Andrew. Where is Etobicoke?
Avatar 3:49pm treadstone:

I have rum punch & get shorty books but haven't read them yet. get shorty movie is so good and underrated.
  3:50pm Andrew in Etobicoke:

A western suburb of Toronto.
  3:50pm Andrew in Etobicoke:

You met Elmiore?
Holy crap!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm JohnEBGood:

Cool Todd.
Avatar 3:52pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Andrew in Etobicoke: He and James Ellroy were sitting near each other on 5th Ave..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Moammar:

May I just say that "Unwanted Guest" from Mermaid Avenue is absolutely sublime? That is all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I have actually leaned heavily toward the Son Volt / Jay Farrar side of things - which is why this is so great for me to hear...
  3:56pm Andrew in Etobicoke:

Thanks for that, Todd.
Avatar 4:07pm Bob Slee:

sooooooooo.... ja ja ja... Todd; Music please ! With all respect...
  4:17pm BetsyO:

@JohnEBGood,... yes, Elmore Leonard books get a strong sense to the vibes and heart of Detroit,... and no I have not read that title,... will find and read,... thanks much!
  4:18pm BetsyO:

Wow, a Jeff Tweedy interview,... fantastic Todd!!!
  4:22pm Johnzon:

bat chain puller. puller puller
  4:27pm Johnzon:

I have mental health issues. there. I said it. hello fellow human beings lol
  4:31pm clarke:

one of the great hedgers, ha ha ha
  4:32pm Tom Dothro:

Mr. Tweedy actually thinks his children will respond to his carefully thought out nurturing. Good luck.
  4:32pm JakeGould:

Hey Todd! Great interview. Jeff sounds at peace with whatever he has gone through.
  4:34pm clarke:

well, tom, since his "kids" are already young adults - it HAS worked. For HIM!!
  4:36pm clarke:

dang = one of my faves, here.
  4:37pm Timmy:

I thought nothing could be more boring than Wilco. Now I know.
  4:37pm MFlynn:

What a great interview! Thanks Todd
  4:39pm clarke:

this coming from an adult with a Y at the end of his first name?
  4:41pm Johnzon:

I liked it... but Timmy!!! LOL
  4:41pm Tom Dothro:

To clarke. Nice caps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm Moammar:

Respect for my governor on the Gary Bonds tune. But, again, about NJT ...
  4:44pm BetsyO:

@Timmy,... just not listen and go somewhere else,... for you can’t please everyone,... especially one so easily bored!
  4:45pm MFlynn:

  4:46pm JakeGould:

There needs to be a WFMU comment board drinking game. But a special variant needs to exist for the rock and roll shows because people will be passed out by 20 minutes in.
  4:47pm Johnzon:

please pardon my lack of nj music history knowledge but are these all nj tunes?
  4:48pm MFlynn:

Yep !!
  4:48pm Johnzon:

ah apparently not!
  4:48pm clarke:

by way of liverpool/mersey
Avatar 4:48pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Johnzon: Springsteen and Southside Johnny are, Springsteen wrote and produced Gary U.S. Bonds track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Moammar:

Yeah, this Gerry and the Pacemakers choice is a little suspect. Possibly the first time ever heard in the Garden State.
  4:49pm Johnzon:

I wonder if he's gonna play some Patti Smith
Avatar 4:49pm dstimpf:

It's not the first time I have heard it on this station.
Avatar 4:50pm dstimpf:

But apparently there are no liverpool fans who listen to wfmu
  4:50pm Danne D:

Soccer tune
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:51pm Moammar:

Possibly the Red Bulls ultras should take it up.
  4:51pm Jim Locker:

Gov. Murphy is late with the call in because he is finishing up his doobie.
  4:51pm Johnzon:

late for the wfmu interview! just for that Im not voting for you!!
  4:51pm Pedro in Arlington:

If it helps, Christie is available at the Netcong Pizza Hut.
  4:53pm JakeGould:

I hope Christie eats a pile of pizza and dies on the toilet 8 hours later while attempting a bowel movement on some McMansion toilet.
  4:53pm Johnzon:

Pedro which Arlington are you from if you don't mind my asking?!
  4:54pm clarke:

Avatar 4:54pm Hoboken Jack:

The governor better not call, say "bababooey," and hang up.
  4:55pm clarke:

looks like the santa pants are coming back off
  4:56pm Johnzon:

I hope he eats a bunch of pizza and then tries to box that guy from the baseball game
  4:56pm Gborbs:

Murf is late? Must be taking NJ Transit.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Moammar:

  5:00pm Jim Locker:

Todd, please ask him when he plans to resign???? Soon hopefully.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm Moammar:

  5:03pm Pedro in Arlington:

@Johnzon I'm two blocks from W-L. They're trying to change the name. Priorities.
  5:04pm Patty D:

What can he do to protect employees from drug tests once marijuana is legalized?
  5:05pm clarke:

the W-L thing is so unreal. don't people realize that Lee fought FOR the united states in the mexican war?!? (no. they don't).
Avatar 5:06pm Fredericks:

I came here for the rock and roll. What the hell is going on?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm Moammar:

Trust me, there is nothing more rock 'n' roll than New Jersey politics.
Avatar 5:09pm Hoboken Jack:

Really appreciating the governor's thoughts on gentrification and protecting longtime residents.
  5:09pm Johnzon:

dude... wishful thinking re. Newark Gov! I live in Detroit... space & bones out the wazzoo and tons of people particularly lifelong residents are still being forced out through tax foreclosures water shutoffs, gentrification etc.
  5:10pm Jim Locker:

Did the governor just step on a cat???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Moammar:

That's a waffle. You can't split the difference on Taylor ham.
  5:11pm Jim Locker:

How about "Born to pay Taxes" for the state song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm dale:

i like pork ham.
  5:12pm Johnzon:

I did realize that about Lee and Im not sure why him fighting to steal land from mexico AND save slavery makes it any better... I had'nt heard about the name change but have no problem with it. Im curious what they'd change it too. I don't keep in touch with any of my classmates so idk how they feel about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:13pm Moammar:

Harry Chapin is a poor man's James Taylor. And I hate James Taylor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Gov. Good luck in Trenton.
  5:14pm Johnzon:

AN HONOR. Pretty sure that makes Todd O Phonic basically the Governor of NJ. or more important anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm dale:

harry chapin has some good stuff. you had to have been born in a certain time to get it. i love w.o.l.d.
  5:14pm eh?:

So, Oscar Hammerstein lived in hippie-town Lambertville?
Avatar 5:15pm Hoboken Jack:

Great interview, Todd! TOPT and Gov Murphy will defeat Dany Laj at shuffleboard!

Great job boo! Love this cut too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm dale:

i hope he's listening and pogoing around the state house.
  5:18pm Johnzon:

I think the names of highchools should be voted on by the student body every 4 years. My dad went to the first Alternative highschool in Madison WI in the late 60's early 70's. it was a self segregated combination of disaffected whites and poor black kids... the black kids mostly wanted to call it Malcolm X and the white kids wanted to call it MLK and they settled on Malcolm Shabaz over the objections of the school board.
  5:19pm clarke:

i think it should be called JEB Stuart High
  5:21pm Johnzon:

Avatar 5:31pm Hoboken Jack:

Fredericks, just because it wasn't the mayor of New Port Richey being interviewed, you don't have to be impatient.
Avatar 5:36pm Fredericks:

Sorrey, Jack. And the music is back in place. I've calmed down.
Avatar 5:42pm Hoboken Jack:

Haha it's ok, have a great weekend, Fredericks!!
  5:42pm ashley morey:

Songs of Judy has bypassed my usual preference against live albums and I've been listening to Neil ever since it came out. Fine choice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm dale:

not songs for daryll?
  5:44pm Pedro in Arlington VA:

Anything from the 20th century honoring the Confederacy was generally the work of racist Jim Crow cracker types. That said, there are huge overcrowding and funding issues that are begging to be addressed.
  5:45pm Peter from Dover NJ:

@ Clarke the bar was in the country north of Ann Arbor. it was called the Roadhouse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Corey:

You're welcome Corey! Thanks everyone for listening, I'll be back 6am Monday morning!

Having the governor on, okay. But to talk crap partisan political propaganda, is why I quit listening to this show, and would never make a contribution to this station.
