A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

In lieu of turkey with dressing I make for myself what I started calling holiday hash: chopped/shredded chicken with onion, celery, sage and pecans. Not to get us all down on a feast day, but reminding, while the big countries (US/etc.) spend zillions on war, millions are underfed, even in the US. Not a guilt trip, just a reminder: end all wars; money for human needs!

Why does "outsider" mean unskilled? Many of the visual artists I've seen in museums (like the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore) are quite skilled, they just never were formally trained.

Avatar This Is The Modern World with Trouble Marathon 2024 Swag For Life Member 9:54am
Granny Spicy Tuna:

"Outsider" art (unskilled, intuitive, raw, visionary, etc) mainly refers to the fact that the artist is coming from outside the mainstream institutions of the art world—not trained, no concept of art theory, no reference to what other artists in the art world are considering or expressing. A unique, unrelated expression.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am
melinda:

"Outsider" seems to correlate with both aesthetic and lack of institutional training. If you come up through the art school/university system I don't think you get the label even if you do deviate from certain aesthetics.
