A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

What's everybody eating today? I want to hear from the non turkey peeps as well as the thanksgiving trads. what a wild thing it would be to do a snap shot of what everyone eats on one day out of the year. talking global here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Ken From Hyde Park:

Right this minute eating some fruit loops kind of cereal. Will have turkey and things later. And then pie for the rest of the day.

What is this? The hosting Thanksgiving dinner theme song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Ken From Hyde Park:

ASMR record crackles!
Avatar 9:34am Dances with Moomins:

We always try to have very traditional meal ( usually Saturday after ) so that it feels like 'back home'. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed pots and sweet taters. pumpkin pie. Instead of something exotic we go straight back to Jersey! It's exotic for our Finnish friends! Must go rake the forest!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Linda Lee:

about the eats: i'm lucky enough to have vegetarian ready-meals provided for me from the local YMCA camp. so: early oatmeal breakfast, ready meal later. the opposite of fancy. nothing special. happy for a roof & my autonomy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am VT Knit Girl:

Thank you for being here! So happy to be able to listen today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am common:

Trouble! All!
Avatar 9:36am TDK60:

Oh, Linda L. that sort of answers my question from a prior show..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Linda Lee:

which one? :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am melinda:

In lieu of turkey with dressing I make for myself what I started calling holiday hash: chopped/shredded chicken with onion, celery, sage and pecans. It combines most of the flavors of the cornbread dressing my aunt used to make with poultry in a corn-free single dish. Cranberry-orange relish and if I'm feeling ambitious pumpkin pie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am melinda:

@TDK haha! The echo is amazing.
  9:38am emily (adrian) in mpls:

@melinda - that sounds very tasty
Avatar 9:39am TDK60:

Adrian in Londontown: I'm still a cheese & egg and occasional fish guy, still considering the full vegan jump. Today I'll likely have mac & cheese, potatoes, beans, etc.
Avatar 9:40am glenn:

tetra pak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Linda Lee:

i'm at the occasional-fish stage, me. however, now i'm likely dealing with lyme-coinfection-type anemia ~ so i'll have to start doing something a little differently. not sure what.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am VT Knit Girl:

you have never been to my house for thanksgiving, no over cooked veggies here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am melinda:

When I went outside for some morning sun I noticed my collards looked fractured but edible, beneath the snow, so I think I'll have those too. They tend to be tastier after frost.
Avatar 9:42am TDK60:

The Vegetable Orchestra: will they do a cover of the Mothers of Invention's 'Call Any Vegetable'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Linda Lee:

@TDK60 ~ did you mean the meals-on-wheels question? yes, this is meals-on-wheels, if the wheels are mine. if i don't have wheels, i don't have meals.
Avatar 9:43am katie:

Happy tofurkey day!
Avatar 9:43am TDK60:

Melinda: love collards, used to grow those. // I see, LL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Linda Lee:

this has occurred!
  9:44am Jonathan:

happy thanksgiving from the lucky honeybee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Linda Lee:

i was just thinking the same thing. women *are* outsiders by virtue of gender. meant to be so.
Avatar 9:45am Trouble:

hola@ lucky honey bee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Linda Lee:

if we were not, 'women artist', 'women writer' & so on wouldn't be common.
Avatar 9:45am TDK60:

Not to get us all down on a feast day, but reminding, while the big countries (US/etc.) spend zillions on war, millions are underfed, even in the US. Not a guilt trip, just a reminder: end all wars; money for human needs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Linda Lee:

alas, providing for human needs has no measurable return. ergo the apparent injustice. ('apparent' because there is no justice or injustice to the calculation of corporate sustenance.)
  9:47am PJ:

Why does "outsider" mean unskilled? Many of the visual artists I've seen in museums (like the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore) are quite skilled, they just never were formally trained.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Linda Lee:

i'm not sure 'outsider' means unskilled. afaik it only points to a challenging aesthetic. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am melinda:

I like what I've heard from that New Age collection.
  9:50am emily (adrian) in mpls:

@TDK60 - I had the same thought about the Veggie Orchestra and that Zappa track - I’ve meant to make an all veggie song mixtape for a while. There’s a song off Smile that calls out some veggies as well I think.
And I second your reminder about the ludicrous way resources are divided up in this country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Linda Lee:

just purchsed this dorothy ashby lp! it's delicious all around.
Avatar 9:50am glenn:

oh, i'm pretty sure the shaggs were unskilled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Webhamster Henry:

Hi Trouble - do you have turkey gobbles on those French bird call records?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Linda Lee:

but the term is so inclusive it's got to mean more.
Avatar 9:51am dale:

ola. having tofurkey and probably brussels sprouts. i brought a bottle of peach wine i made 6 or 7 years ago up out of the cellar and hopefully it's better than last time i cracked one open.
Avatar 9:52am glenn:

doesn't mean i don't love them, but still.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Adrian in London:

"Beautiful toons" This is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Megaroni:

Beautiful Diana!
  9:54am PJ:

@Glenn: everybody's unskilled whenever they start any kind of practice, some never get much better technically, but most do just because practice makes, well, not perfect, but better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Granny Spicy Tuna:

"Outsider" art (unskilled, intuitive, raw, visionary, etc) mainly refers to the fact that the artist is coming from outside the mainstream institutions of the art world—not trained, no concept of art theory, no reference to what other artists in the art world are considering or expressing. A unique, unrelated expression.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am melinda:

"Outsider" seems to correlate with both aesthetic and lack of institutional training. If you come up through the art school/university system I don't think you get the label even if you do deviate from certain aesthetics.
Avatar 9:55am dale:

not a basketball jones?
  9:55am SM Ken:

Morning All! Cooking up a Turdoggen in Virginia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Bobby K:

Good morning, Trouble + everyone. Thanks for being here.
Avatar 9:56am TDK60:

On this "Thanksgiving" Day, Linda Lee, I think we could learn from the Iroquois Confederacy = Haudenosaunee. Not a patriarchy but a matriarchy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am melinda:

@Granny exactly.
  9:56am Mick:

Trouble! Thank you for Thanksgiving-ing with us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Chris Johanson is a great example of an intitutionally trained artist with mainstream success who was directly influenced by outsider art.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Linda Lee:

hmmm ... so we're dumping the idea of the 'outsider' label based on class, race, gender, sexuality & all that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Well, Linda Lee, one could certainly argue that access to institutions is limited to those who do not fall under certain type categories…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Granny Spicy Tuna:

I think that made sense?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Linda Lee:

@TDK60 ~ how about no institutionalized hierarchy beyond the institutional collective? i like that one.
Avatar 10:00am βrian:

We'll be doing our traditional lasagna, with shiitakes, oodles of spinach, zucchini, our canned tomatoes, goat cheese, and parm. Veggie, most def not vegan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Linda Lee:

@Granny Spicy Tuna ~ access is limited, but not entirely. so is a 'female artist' only an 'outsider' til she gets in?
Avatar 10:01am TDK60:

LL: yeah! Actually the Haudenosaunee are not matriarchal but matrilineal; and more democratic than the US!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Linda Lee:

@TDK60 ~ when pressed i like calling myself a 'utopian anarchist' ~ then i have to busy myself explaining that anarchism isn't nihilism!
  10:02am prudy:

hello Linda Lee. Nice to see you again on the comments board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Linda Lee, i think one of the signature characteristics of privilege and exclusionary institutions is the inclusion of certain select minorities, those who "pass," so to speak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Linda Lee:

lots of places more democratic than the US at this point. don't believe the US was ever actually democratic, or intended to be.
Avatar 10:03am TDK60:

LL: sounds good-- it's just horizontal confederalism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Linda Lee:

@Granny Spicy Tuna ~ well sure. why be 'in' if there's no 'out'? :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Right! Exactly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Linda Lee:

thank you prudy. i'm back among the living again ~ or passing. :-D
  10:04am prudy:

I think human beings by nature tend to class themselves, it's always something we have to challenge in ourselves

  10:05am Ike:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Granny Spicy Tuna:

I pissed off the owner of the Beat Museum in San Francisco because i called the place sexist—all of the "Women of the Beat Generation" were corralled off in a little cubbyhole off the main exhibition room. But griping about Beat Lit sexism, gee…
Avatar 10:06am TDK60:

I had a good laugh once, was reading Akwesasne Notes, the Mohawk newspaper. They were discussing a controversy they were having with the NY State govt. Two NY troopers attended a Mohawk meeting. One said, "here in New York State.." and was interrupted with: "we're not in New York, this is the Mohawk nation!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Linda Lee:

prudy ~ alas, we insist on binary thinking as a means of self-identification. us, them; in, out; friend, foe. we're given no chance to diverge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Smash the social binaries!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doobois:

Any more head-noddin' and this noggin is on the floor. Dope ass jam, Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Linda Lee:

@TDK60 ~ well sure. in one respect the state boundaries are really meaningless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Linda Lee:

@Granny Spicy Tuna ~ hey, why not hide the women in a beat exhibition? they were hidden in the movement! :-D

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Linda Lee:

anyone thinking the beats & hippies weren't just the patriarchy in sandals has a new think comin :-D
Avatar 10:12am βrian:

J'ai faim !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am melinda:

Everyone is outside of something, so I don't think broadening the scope of "outsider artist" is especially useful, especially when it wasn't the best term to begin with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Ken From Hyde Park:

OK, I give up. What the heck is a Turdoggen?
Avatar 10:13am TDK60:

Granny & Linda: so true. I was influenced by the Beats but now see the sexism. Diane Di Prima is one who worked against that.
  10:13am Ike:

My folks said they’re sick of turkey, stuffing, etc., and suggested we go for spicy Thai or Sichuan food today instead, so I’m thankful for that!
  10:13am PJ:

@Trouble: Twist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Linda Lee:

@melinda ~ again, binary delineation. meh! true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Adrian in London:

Ooh, I like this Sayma track.
  10:15am PJ:

@Ken: I imagine getting a small enough dog to fit inside a turkey is the hard part. Miniature chihuahuas are typical but they really don't have a lot of meat on them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Linda Lee:

@TDK60 ~ the Beats (media construct to start with) were influential individually ~ for sure. they were also of their time.
Avatar 10:17am Dances with Moomins:

Oh PJ a solution to the toy dog thing!
Avatar 10:18am TDK60:

LL: complex: at least *some* male hippies (and male lefty activists) were in the midst of learning anti-sexism; often a long difficult process / journey. I was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Linda Lee:

i mean, as influential as any gifted artist will be, within a limited scope. it's only right! they were of a lineage, too, that was markedly patriarchal ~ as their societies were.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Linda Lee:

oh yeah, it's complex in terms of individuals. then there's 'the water we swim in' ~
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Linda Lee:

(david foster wallace coined that one) ~ individual progress is possible, but we're always where we are.
we need a big table for this discussion ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Dave in Vermont:

This is actually what I was looking for. Previous link is good too though. Excerpt from the prologue to Tommy Orange's excellent novel, There There:

  10:21am eki:

But what kind of recipe makes an annoying little yappy dog tender and tasty inside a turkey? How long do you marinate him, for instance? And where do you put the giblets?
Avatar 10:22am βrian:

@Ike: One of my favorite TGs was when we served up a monstrous platter of egg rolls — made from scratch. Very gingery and satisfying.
  10:23am Fernando P.:

Maria Rita sound so too much like her mother that It’s creepy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Linda Lee:

@Dave in Vermont ~ there are *many* reasons to reject a celebration of the conventional narrative. there's also the opportunity for gratitude having nothing to do with the narrative..
  10:24am PJ:

@eki: It is recommended to give the pooch lots of mulled wine for three days before cooking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am mauri:

eki, bag it up with sliced kiwifruits for a day. that'll make it tender.
  10:26am Bobby:

There, There is a great book
Avatar 10:26am TDK60:

..and obviously LL, the anti-sexist struggle isn't all past tense, in "the water we swim in".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Linda Lee:

noooooo god no!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Linda Lee:

please, when our 'leadership' is still debating a woman's right to her own body.. no, not past tense.

Linda Lee: I taught in So Bx and Bed Stuy 1990 - 2016..
The schools are there, the goodness is there .. super creative.. My sone went to PS 3 and then ICE - Pschools - some problems but SUPER ...FYI - He is the ARNAN from the 1996 replay on Wednesday's & second delaty about Turkeys..
Only middle class or uppers have the time/resources to find the good schools and get the kid(s) in.. That is the crime.. every NYC school could be great!!!!!

On the run....
