BIG POST-GAME THANKS to Sophie van R. of Leiden, in the Netherlands, for her late-inning pledge!! YAY!
Avatar 11:49am Tony Coulter:

The Die Form cassette pictured at left is housed in an oversized rectangular box, the bottom part of which is lopped off in my playlist pic. Here it is in its full ... gory: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 11:51am Tony Coulter:

Oh, also: For a change, this week's "Tape Hiss" *will* be archived.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Rich in Washington:

What do you suppose the most ungainly and awkward thing a cassette release was ever issued in?
  12:02pm Dean:

Heading to PDX for Thanksgiving this year.
Avatar 12:03pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Tony and hissters
Avatar 12:04pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, hey, hey, Rich, Dean, and coelacanth∅!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

In for the Hiss! How do, Tony and all!
Avatar 12:05pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, James!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm listener james from westwood:

@Dean, I keep getting holiday offers from the hotel where I stayed in PDX for a conference, and they are damn competitive. Very tempting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm Yvang:

Let's hug and hiss! Hello tape people!
Avatar 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: the French band Achwghâ Ney Wodei ‎released a cassette that was sealed inside a ceramic figurine -- you have to break the figurine to get at it. I also have cassette that's sewn inside a yarmulke -- I've never opened it.
Avatar 12:09pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Yvang!
Avatar 12:11pm coelacanth∅:

a friend distributed his cd in a lunchbag, accompanied by lots of other goodies. if he made cassettes, which i don't know, that would've been the most ungainly packaging i know of. as it is i had to take the cd out to file it with my others, and put the bag with the other stuff in it in a box of basically unrelated stuff.
  12:12pm Dean:

@ljfw: I've never stayed at a hotel in PDX, though I've considered it. My entire family, four of us, will stay in NE with my sister-in-law's family at their home, which is a pleasure, but a tight fit.
Avatar 12:14pm coelacanth∅:

Tony i would've tried to carefully saw off or otherwise somehow remove the bottom of that figurine. (or whatever would be the least conspicuous)
Avatar 12:16pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

Yes! There it is.
Avatar 12:17pm Tony Coulter:

I have the cassette, sans ceramic car.
Avatar 12:18pm coelacanth∅:

i used to take as much time as needed to preserve packaging when i opened records. a bit obsessive i suppose.
but yeah i'd love to have that car! ...but i'd also HAVE to listen to the tape!
  12:21pm Dean:

Oddly, I'm mildly obsessive about removing labels from records, e.g., price tags. It's odd, because I appreciate the evidence of provenance a price tag supplies. But I also like a clean cover, and I'm particularly fond of figuring out harmless ways to remove adhesive residue. If I had it all to do over again, I'd get a Ph.D. in adhesives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Rich in Washington:

Was is Merzbow who released either a cassette or CD that was permanently installed in a car's deck, so you had to buy the car? Or am I thinking of someone else. Right now, it's defying my google fu.
  12:23pm Dean:

Throbbing Gristle released 24 hours of live shows on cassettes in a little briefcase.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Rich in Washington:

I have this weird thing about so-called 'hype stickers' on records. I don't like shrinkwrap, so I throw the stickers away with the wrap. I hate them. It's like someone saying 'fuck the designer! Let's hear from the marketing department!'.
Avatar 12:23pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Yep, that was Merzbow

@ Dean: I'm obsessive about removing price tags. God only knows how many hours of my life I've wasted doing that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Rich in Washington:

I've always wanted to own TG's 24 Hours ever since reading about it in Trousers Press Guide To Records as a teenager.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Rich in Washington:

I've even thought of going so far as to make a fake one with the digital files and scans I have, simply for my own fetishistic enjoyment.
Avatar 12:25pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Yep -- I too hate hype stickers. The ones I've seen are usually about the "long-awaited" reissue of something only three people had ever heard.
  12:26pm Dean:

Well, here's where we differ. I love hype stickers. I more or less meticulously clip them from the shrinkwrap and keep them with the jewel case or cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Rich in Washington:

I find Ronsonol, Zippo Lighter Fuel or straight up Naptha (the active ingredient of both) works wonders at removing decals. It evaporates away and leaves little evidence to the slipcover.
  12:30pm Dean:

I first learned about the TG 24 hours box at the Cabaret Voltaire/Young Marble Giants/Monitor show in LA in October 1980. Somebody was showing off a copy of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Rich in Washington:

There are a few records where the hype sticker is desirable for some reason and I'll carefully peel them off and affix them to the poly bag I use to replace the shrinkwrap.
I also recently noticed that a lot of records I bought as a teen and young adult are still in their shrinkwrap and have hype stickers still, and even price stickers from my favorite Tower Records store.
As a kid, I knew that any record that had the handwritten 'RECOMMENDED!' by some mystery clerk was a must-buy.
Avatar 12:33pm Sem:

A little late but keen to hear what Hiss Cassetteness has to offer. Hello, Tony, all.
Avatar 12:34pm Tony Coulter:

Greetings, Sem!
Avatar 12:36pm Tony Coulter:

Some hype stickers are informative -- but most are just annoying attempts to browbeat you into buying the thing.
Avatar 12:36pm coelacanth∅:

agreed Rich @12.23 it's disrespectful of the thought and possible creativity that went into the album design. and yes spent lots of time carefully removing stickers - occasionally ruining the cover at least as bad as the sticker did! more than once (long ago) i retouched the album cover with colored pencils or pens after the sticker pulled part of it away.
Avatar 12:42pm coelacanth∅:

i've bought more used records than new ones, and assholes at stores ("second coming records" comes to mind) smacked 2" diameter stickers, with super adhesive and 4 perforations across them on all their albums. often 2-3 stickers. never on a shrinkwrap. often in the most obnoxious location they could find on the cover art (like over a person's face)
Avatar 12:42pm northguineahills:

Gonna leave in a bit to vote (been sick). But here in the meantime,
Avatar 12:43pm Tony Coulter:

Hey ho, NGH!
Avatar 12:45pm Tony Coulter:

OOPS! Just realized that I've already featured this Die Form cassette on "Tape Hiss" -- back in 2016. Guess I'm getting senile. Although, unlike that show, this show will be archived ... so there's that.
Avatar 12:56pm Tony Coulter:

The cover of the cassette on now ("Truc") is a square box that resembles the box a small reel-to-reel tape would come in.
Avatar 12:56pm Tony Coulter:

(as the cover design suggests)
Avatar 12:58pm Mary Wing:

Hello Tony and hissers! Loving the talk about stickers and price tags! I am with Dean in the love 'em camp for hype stickers; I have a bunch of '80s ones in a notebook somewhere. But I, too, like a clean cover, and have messed up many a used record that had the pink St. Mark's Sounds price sticker on them. :-(
Avatar 1:00pm northguineahills:

What about the notches taken out of used LP covers?, (and cds), that used to annoy me).
Avatar 1:00pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mary!

Yikes -- St. Mark's stickers -- those were the worst ever. Eventually even I stopped trying to remove those.
Avatar 1:04pm northguineahills:

One of those days I wish I only had one illness at a time (well, I did go 27 years w/o anything serious, so, I guess, I was due....
Avatar 1:06pm Tony Coulter:

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well, NGH....
Avatar 1:08pm northguineahills:

Off to vote, wish I knew early voting was an option here. Bad day to sound/look like a plague victim. Cheers y OOOs!
Avatar 1:08pm Mary Wing:

Yeah, if it was a shiny cover, I'd make an attempt, but matte cardboard was a total fail.
Avatar 1:11pm coelacanth∅:

oh yeah st.mark's sounds. maybe even worse than second coming.
Avatar 1:12pm Tony Coulter:

I think they used super glue for those stickers -- plus they were segmented, so just when you thought you were on a roll as far as peeling it off, part of the label would break off.
Avatar 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

i actually did save some hype stickers too (which means i still have them, somewhere) but only after carefully removing them.
and occasionally a shrinkwrap itself was unique and i'd try to save that. ("wish you were here" comes to mind. deep blue.)
Avatar 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

this fanfaronnades is lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Yvang:

This Alains De Philippis track reminds me of Vicky Bennet's works.
Avatar 1:17pm coelacanth∅:

yes, segmented. that's what i meant @12.42 by "perforated". ("segmented" works better)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Yvang:

Vicki Bennett is the correct spelling, sorry!
Avatar 1:20pm Mary Wing:

You still have the blue shrinkwrap from Wish You Were Here, coela? What does it look like after all these years?
  1:21pm Dean:

Buzzcocks' first album out of the UK was released in a shopping bag. I still have it.
Avatar 1:25pm coelacanth∅:

Mary i don't know! we (teenagers) listened to that album a billion times and not infrequently i had to carefully slip the blue shrinkwrap off again because someone wanted to see the album art. i vaguely remember it starting to tear. i might've given up, but it's stored away and i don't know.
Avatar 1:27pm Tony Coulter:

Er, this release is older than I just said -- it came out around three-and-a-half weeks ago, not two weeks ago. So, practically ready for the cut-out bins.
  1:28pm ike:

Sounding good! Hmm, I wonder if I still have any of the 90s CD hype stickers that I carefully peeled off the shrink wrap (when possible — sometimes they’d tear) before unwrapping the CD and then tried to save inside the CD booklets.
Avatar 1:28pm coelacanth∅:

wasn't there a rolling stones or led zeppeling album with a custom shrinkwrap? i can't quite grasp this important morsel of information which must be festering in my head somewhere.
i think so though.
  1:28pm Dean:

I've always wondered whether there are cut-out copies of Traffic's Shoutout at the Fantasy Factory or Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys.
Avatar 1:28pm Mary Wing:

I always took the shrinkwraps off since they tore so easily. The only outer wrapping I've preserved is the silver mylar wrapping for Madonna's "Sex" book, heh.
  1:29pm Dean:

Yeah, later Zeppelin, came in a paper bag. In the Out Door, maybe?
Avatar 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

Hiya, Ike!
  1:30pm Dean:

In Through the Out Door: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Through_the_Out_Door#Packaging_and_artwork
Avatar 1:31pm coelacanth∅:

i had no problem with stickers on jewel cases. why care? but occasionally there'd be one on a "digipak" (is that right?) and that would piss me off. i know at least of a Nick Cave cd and a ooioo cd that the covers are compromised by stickers or glue.
  1:31pm Dean:

(This thread reminds me of a long comment board on one of Bob Brainen's shows during the past year or so. He invited listeners/commenters to help him inventory all albums with die-cut covers.)
Avatar 1:37pm coelacanth∅:

in through the out door had brown paper and the water-sensative inside. i have one that i never wet, but humidity caused it to start being colored anyway.
...there's another though.
i know "some girls" had a "temporary" cover saying "pardon our appearance while we renovate" or something like that. maybe that's what i'm thinking of.
Avatar 1:39pm coelacanth∅:

Dean what do you mean by "die cut" cover? (like through the past, darkly?)
  1:42pm Dean:

That's one simple example, coelacanth∅, as are the two Traffic albums or E Pluribus Funk, but Some Girls is a better example, because it includes cuts from the interior of the cover, not just the border.

The Some Girls cover was changed due to legal challenges by celebrities depicted on it.
  1:43pm Dean:

Here't the Brainen thread, though it might have extended a week or two: http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/73800
Avatar 1:43pm coelacanth∅:

right, and physical graffiti...
  1:43pm Dean:

...and III!
  1:44pm ?:

I suppose all those 12" singles and EPs with the exposed label are die-cut, too.
Avatar 1:44pm coelacanth∅:

oh yeah, great album cover!
Avatar 1:44pm Mary Wing:

Yeah, Led Zep III with it's rotating cover!
  1:44pm Dean:

Ahhhh! Nit! Noooooo! (We've had a louse infestation chez nous.)
Avatar 1:46pm coelacanth∅:

doors la woman; look at yourself by uriah heep; there's a renaissance album and a 3 dog night album too that have openings through the front.
Avatar 1:46pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Better than the post-Supersister band The Nits (at least there was only one Nit today)
  1:48pm Dean:

Right, Tony, but between the two I'd pick The Nits. Not that Nit was lousy at all.
Avatar 2:00pm Tony Coulter:

Don't be such a nit-picker, Dean.
  2:04pm Mark R:

This Bene Gesserit album is helping me slide right into my post-lunch nap. (That's a compliment, btw.)
Avatar 2:05pm Tony Coulter:

Hey, Mark! I'm impressed you can type while you're asleep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Michael 98145:

yes. enjoying this. thanks.
Avatar 2:05pm Tony Coulter:

Hola, Michael 98145!
  2:06pm Mark R:

Seriously, I'm looking up and down your playlist and I don't recognize a single artist. That's a good thing!
Avatar 2:09pm Tony Coulter:

Die Form are kinda big with some gothy/fetish-wear types -- but, yeah, the rest are relatively obscure, unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm Michael 98145:

that's why we come here ♫
Avatar 2:14pm coelacanth∅:

Mary i happen to be in the house where most of my records are stored so i had to look. i found my original copy of wish you were here (& another one i don't remember obtaining) and no shrink wrap any more - unless i stored it elsewhere, which i might've. i did pull the record out, knowing the my former self could've folded the shrinkwrap up and stuck it inside; and i see that i saved the round sticker (i.pinimg.com...) from the shrinkwrap...glued it to the middle of the record!
(...and the postcard is in there too)
Avatar 2:15pm coelacanth∅:

this human flesh's voice sounds a bit like Tricky's.
Avatar 2:17pm Tony Coulter:

I think it might be the vocalist of Pseudo Code
Avatar 2:18pm Mary Wing:

I don't remember if my brother got the sticker when he took the record after he moved out after college...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Rich in Washington:

THey don't actually put hype stickers on the jacket itself, do they? I mean, most new records I've bought, they seem to all be on the shrinkwrap. I'll have to look at my older records.
Avatar 2:21pm coelacanth∅:

it was on the outer wrap. (i certainly wasn't concerned about "collectibility" then if i glued the sticker to the record!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Rich in Washington:

I find that I have to regularly change the poly bag on my copy of The Feederz Ever Feel Like Killing Your Boss? because the sandpaper cover shreds the bag every couple of years or so.
Avatar 2:24pm Tony Coulter:

There's a current reissue label that *stitches* "hype-obis" onto the cover of their LPs. (I'm blanking on the name of the label at the moment.) Anyway -- it's tres annoying.
Avatar 2:24pm coelacanth∅:

i remember that many imports were never shrinkwrapped. they just put them into nice, sturdy plastic sleeves; and sometimes, since the sleeves were interchangeable, the album cover itself bore promo stickers, unfortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm Rich in Washington:

This song is really aptly titled.
Avatar 2:25pm Tony Coulter:

but that sounds like album art unto itself!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Stanley:

Hiss! Boo!
  2:28pm Dean:

Perversely, I also like promotional copies of LPs that feature a big banner of track listings, usually affixed to the bottom of the album cover, disguising a good three inches of the art work.
Avatar 2:29pm coelacanth∅:

and (re:Rich@2.23) wasn't there another album with an abrasive cover, designed specifically to damage the albums around it?
Avatar 2:29pm Tony Coulter:

Greets, Stanley!
  2:30pm Dean:

I have a Chickasaw Mudd Puppies CD encased in burlap, and Sam Shalabi's "luteness" has a bit of random hardened gum-like stuff affixed to the jewel case.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Rich in Washington:

@coelacanth∅: I know what you're saying but I can't think of who. I do know Feederz stole the idea from Guy DeBord, who I think did it to a book, but I am pretty sure another, unrelated artist also did it with an LP.
Avatar 2:45pm Tony Coulter:

Olle Borg is apparently a well-know visual artist in Sweden. Here's a peak at some of his stuff: spgallery.se...

Ever buy any of Eugene Chadbourne's cassette releases or early CDR releases? They're usually literally made from stuff lying around casa de Chadbourne.

Buddy of mine has one of those Chadbourne CDRs.

I've done that with old records; drill off center holes. A bit called a forstner drill bit works best. It makes a neater hole and won't crack the record.

Hey, Chris! Yeah, this Olle Borg is great! I'm now on the hunt for this thing he's on: www.discogs.com...

And again: I *will* be archiving today's show, just to break with tradition.

The same buddy did an "alternate hole" remix of Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street." Mary Wing has played it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CCB59CTZmM

I'm just not set up to store weird/overly large boxes, etc, for records, CDs or cassettes. At least with the latter, I can just put them in storage since I rarely access tapes unless I'm ripping them.
But some of those Caroliner Rainbow releases are a pain in the ass to store. My wife thought one of them was a used box of office paper and nearly threw it out. It was also smashed flat by the time I'd bought it.

oh, excellent news! thanks, Tony.

@ Rich: At least one of my Caroliner packages has medical waste in it.
