Sneaking in early with a hearty "welcome back!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @listener james! Great to see you, and to be back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am listener james from westwood:

End of DST had me up before the chickens, so I drove around town as dawn lit up some of our nicer fall foliage. Hoping blue skies are a balm out in Brooklyn as they turned out to be over the course of Mayuko's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00am Jeff Golick:

Yup. Was out with the dog earlier; Prospect Park is peak leaf right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am listener james from westwood:

We have a few that are half and half, like they can't commit which I find amusing and can relate to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am doctorjazz:

Hi, Jeff, James, and all the rest of the DO folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Jeff Golick:

Hah. Yes. The twenty degree temp swings probably have them somewhat confused.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Jeff Golick:

@doctorjazz! Good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Dave in Vermont:

hiya kids
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Jeff Golick:

What is up, @Dave in Vermont!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am doctorjazz:

Have to get out and bike today, have a big bike trip/vacation coming up.

Went out with my mother in law last night for her 102nd birthday. Pretty amazing (she wanted Kosher Deli for those looking for health tips for longevity...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Jeff Golick:

Wow. Happy bday to her, @doc.
Avatar 9:17am hyde:

gooood morning
Avatar 9:18am hyde:

@doc. cool! i will now commence with the eating of the pastrami
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Jeff Golick:

Yes, @hyde! I will race you to the smoked fish.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am listener james from westwood:

Holy christmas, @doctorjazz, 102! Happy second century-plus to her. Second order of matzoh ball soup for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Jeff Golick:

@doc: she have a ride to the polls on Tuesday?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am doctorjazz:

She had sable, kishka (stuffed derma), (usually tongue is her staple order). Then, because the Deli (Lox, Stock, and deli) wouldn't have dairy, we went to another restaurantfor Creme Brule.. .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Scraps:

Darn, I hate missing Tatas-Matoes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Jeff Golick:

@Scraps! Leftover 'matoes for you, then. Welcome.

I voted. Now (aaaarrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh....) ..... wait, fists tightly clenched
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am doctorjazz:

Good morning, Jeff, and hello, the OUT crowd, and lurking appreciators of the show's destination.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am doctorjazz:

I voted last weekend, @Scraps, know the feeling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @Sem!
  9:32am Listener Gregory:

I've been here since the beginning, Jeff, but I need to go get coffee. Could I get a hall pass? It'll only take 10 min.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Jeff Golick:

@Listener Gregory: if you'll share your coffee, you can come right in now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Jeff Golick:

...or rather, you won't need that pass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Scraps:

hmmmmmm, coffee.........
  9:41am Dean:

Wow, the cello suites arranged for viola. Endless possibilities with Bach. Yo-Yo Ma's latest (his third) recorded traversal of the suites is pretty special, too.
  9:42am Listener Gregory:

Well, I can't leave during this Kashkashian, but start my timer once it's over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am doctorjazz:

Like this Small Talk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Scraps:

Very like Jean Shwarz....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am doctorjazz:

Gotta get ready for Ozzie walk... Feeling lazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Scraps:

Um, Schwarz, even
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Jeff Golick:

I don't know Jean Schwarz, @Scraps -- who he/she?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Scraps:

doc, you & me have kinda the same picture. ;-)
  10:04am Listener Gregory:

OK, back. The line was ridiculous.
Avatar 10:04am glenn:

it's funny how kashkashian can kook like kardashian at first glance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Scraps:

Jeff, French musique concrete, INA-GRM label
Avatar 10:06am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff and listeners.

@Dean hard to get past Pablo Casals take, surface noise and all. Missed the cello/viola due to bonfire commitments, looks interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Jeff Golick:

@Brian! "bonfire commitments" -- that's what we call elections here now. Welcome.
Avatar 10:09am Brian in UK:

I like the story of Casals finding the manuscripts in a shop in Madrid/Barcelona, wherever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Jeff Golick:

@glenn: I've been doing that exact same double-take. Hi there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Jeff Golick:

@Scraps: ah very cool; thanks. Will investigate.

@LG: welcome back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Scraps:

Just awesome if you can find it. And any of INA-GRM is pretty great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Jeff Golick:

That looks familiar, @Scraps. (A quick search later, and it turns out I've played Schwarz on the show before. I'm an idiot.)
Avatar 10:14am Brian in UK:

Guy Fawkes night tomorrow. This is the place to be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Jeff Golick:

Wear flame retardant clothing, @Brian.
Avatar 10:17am glenn:

and hopefully tuesday will be bonfire night for the republicans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Scraps:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Scraps:

This is neat.
  10:24am Dean:

@Brian in UK: I'm not that familiar with Casals' pioneering recording! I've heard individual suites performed live by Jordi Savall and Anner Bylsma. I enjoy Bylsma's recordings, Rostropovich's, Janos Starker's, and others'.
Avatar 10:25am hyde:

yeah this is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Granny Spicy Tuna:

This track has more likes than almost any track i've ever clicky starred around here…
  10:26am Dean:

Edgar Myers does great arrangements for double bass, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Jeff Golick:

Heya, @hyde! And @Granny Spicy Tuna! (I too was surprised at how many times this Kosugi has been starred.)
  10:27am JtotheK:

Enjoying the tunes. Hi Jeff, hello everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Jeff Golick:

Good day, @JtotheK!
Avatar 10:30am Sem:

Hello, Brian. A smashing Guy Fawkes time at Lewes, it seems.
Visted some friends back in the 80s, teaching at University of Sussex, and living in Kingston, near Lewes. So know some of that area.
  10:32am Listener Gregory:

The Casals stands alone, but nonetheless, it is important for others to do their own take on these things, as they can bring out other aspects of the music or try different interpretations. BTW, I don't think it's that rare for a viola to do the cello pieces... I've heard it before, but don't ask for details.
Avatar 10:35am Brian in UK:

Sem, A few years ago we stayed in West Firle just down the road. All the villages around Lewes have their own bonfires from late September on a kind of rota. We walked into the pub and were confronted by what I imagine would have par in New Orleans. Man at the bar in top hat and feathers with skull face. It got my attention. The problem is that now it is so busy.
  10:36am Dean:

Wasn't implying that it's rare, @LG, but that every new interpretation of Bach, in particular, can be a new discovery. Same goes for many composers, sure. I've been listening to various artists' takes on Shostakovich's preludes and fugues and string quartets: all different and new. But somehow Bach always seems especially fresh.
  10:41am rw:

Good morning! I vote to abolish the springing forward but retain the falling back.
  10:41am Listener Gregory:

@Dean I heard a viola version of a cello suite last week on the New Sounds stream, but now I wonder if it too was the Kashkashian.
Avatar 10:41am Brian in UK:

That's the wonder of Bach. (our dog's favourite, apologies if this has been written before)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @rw: you have my full support.
  10:43am Listener Gregory:

I wonder if the cello suites were even written for cello, or for the viola da gamba or worse.
Avatar 10:44am Brian in UK:

Did Bach even write them or was it his missus.
  10:44am Listener Gregory:

To answer my own question: The title given on the cover of the Anna Magdalena Bach manuscript was Suites à Violoncello Solo senza Basso (Suites for cello solo without bass).
  10:45am Dean:

Pretty sure Jordi Savall played one (or two?) on viola da gamba when I heard his recital at Claremont a long time ago.
Avatar 10:48am hyde:

good ol' Strata East
  10:53am Dean:

A massive survey of reviews of classical recordings published in 2002 has this to say about the cello suites: "The cello was finally coming into its own as a solo instrument in the early 18th century, but again Bach perceived possibilities in the instrument that were unnoticed by others." The author writes "again," because this section follows immediately after the section devoted to the violin sonatas and partitas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Granny Spicy Tuna:

  11:06am Dean:

Discovered that the Savall concert was on Sunday, April 27, 1986, in Claremont, per the LA Times. Montserrat Figueras was to perform, but I now recall Savall announcing that she was ill. He and Rejean Poirier (harpsichord) delivered the program. I remember being disappointed that I couldn't hear Figueras live. Finally heard her not long before she died here in Berkeley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am doctorjazz:

Great Pharaoh Sanders track!

  11:17am Doug Schulkind:

This Pharoah is the song we need to hear now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am doctorjazz:

Listening through headphones on the dog walk, crazy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Granny Spicy Tuna:

When recordings like that fade out, i always wonder how it really ended.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Stanley:

That Pharoah Sanders was freaking freaksville great
Avatar 11:21am Brian in UK:

Jeff, have you got anything more uptempo?

Seen Pharoah twice and both times he kind of drifts on stage whilst playing, as if you have dropped into a constant musical statement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Jeff Golick:

@Stanley! Freaky recognize freaky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Granny Spicy Tuna:

BiUK: i have that feeling at any PFunk related show— the onstage performance seems to be just a fraction of what's going on backstage, with musicians drifting on and off at whim or will.
  11:26am Doug Schulkind:

I regularly observe that tracks like that Pharoah performance sound BETTER when heard on D:O Radio. How to you do that, Jeff?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Granny Spicy Tuna:

@Doug right?!?!?
  11:28am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, Jeff always adds more melted butter and salt than you would use at home.
Avatar 11:28am Brian in UK:

  11:44am Dean:

What's "it"? I think I'm doin' it, but maybe Herbie meant something else?
Avatar 11:46am Brian in UK:

Man, getting dark already on this dank and drizzly day. Only six weeks to the longest day.
Avatar 11:47am Brian in UK:

  11:47am Dean:

I know what you mean, BiUK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Granny Spicy Tuna:

BiUK heh heh, good one!
  11:49am Listener Gregory:

I like "Hang Up." There's quite a bit more than booty swinging here. Not that I have anything against booty swinging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, Herbie checks in toward the end on piano like, "Hi, remember me, I'm Herbie Hancock."
Avatar 11:52am Sem:

Pretty bloody marvellous things this morning, Jeff. Thank you.
