  4:22pm Scott:

The Residents are one strange bunch. I had an LP from about 1980 or so, I think it might have been the Residents' Commercial Album, where each song was exactly 1 minute. Also had the Eskimo album, can't remember the name, I really liked that.
Avatar 4:23pm Jack:

They were so prolific (and varied), it was difficult to keep track of them. I recommend "The Theory of Obscurity -A Film About The Residents "

A friend and I saw the video for "Simple Song" on public access TV sometime in the early 90s. Minds blown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm The Oscar:

@Jack Seconded on the doc. It features extensive interviews with (probably) the original quartet, including Hardy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Rich in Washington:

The Residents had their radio debut on KBOO Community Radio in the mid 70s. I interviewed Homer Flynn a few years ago and he finally confirmed this long-running, at times thought apocryphal tale.
It was on a show run by a gentleman named Bill Reinhardt, who did a wonderful program called Radio Lab (years before the similarly named podcast). He was a friend of the Residents in the early days and hung out with them and they sent him a tape especially prepared for airplay on KBOO.
Avatar 4:25pm northguineahills:

@βrian: I drink my coffee until it's gone (when I have any). Sometimes it can take half a day, and it's definitely room temperature by then. (I never waste caffeine or booze).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Cmurtha:

RIP Hardy. The Residents are so good. Whenever I hear stuff from The King and Eye/The Album where they cover Gershwin and Hank Williams I think of the cube-e performances which are so good.

As for getting into them tim - imo there's not too many bad places to start with their catalogue.

As for everyone else - their two albums that dropped this year are great if you've not given them a listen yet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Uncle Michael:

Gotta love a former member of the Kingston Trio getting roylaties from Residents records.
Avatar 4:26pm northguineahills:

Avatar 4:26pm spodiodi:

You can really hear The Residents' influence in Les Claypool's singing style.
Avatar 4:26pm Jack:

You'd see them a lot on MTV in the early years; they were one of the few bands that did videos at that time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Uncle Michael:

The Eskimo album was called "Eskimo".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm Webhamster Henry:

Kaw-lija is one of my faves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm The Oscar:

For a starting point, I usually either opt for Duck Stab/Buster & Glen (probably their best batch of "songs") or Third Reich & Roll (their funniest concept). Or The Commercial Album, which splits the difference.
  4:28pm Hmbn:

Anyone remember Snakefinger? I loved him and saw him a few times...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm jmr3:

Scott - I had those same two records, plus a 7" sampler from Ralph Records - Buy or Die!!! with great Gary Panter cover art, with Snakefinger, Fred Frith. I was a kid, I didn't want to die, so I sent them cash in the mail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's nifty Arrangement~Production - concepts, quirks & gimmicks aside...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Rich in Washington:

Sending away for a Ralph Records catalog after seeing a tiny ad in Rolling Stone was a total life-changing moment for me. It fucked me up for normal music forever. The first Residents album I bought with my meager teenage allowance was Third Reich and Roll and the Satisfaction 7" single.
I think I still have the catalogs - I was on their mailing list well into the early 90s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm melinda:

I have no recollection of Residents videos on early MTV, far out.
  4:33pm Hmbn:

Hey Fabs, would u play some Snakefinger or Residents that feature Snakefinger? How about "Here Comes the Bums" or "I love her to much to respect her..."?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm The Oscar:

I'm lucky enough to have seen them three times. It's easy to overlook among all the conceptual stuff, but Homer/"The Singing Resident" is a hell of a frontman, even today.
Avatar 4:34pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Everything up to King & Eye, in my humble, is absolutely infallible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm Rich in Washington:

I remember also getting two paper turntable slipmats stuff in the record mailer with that first order - one the classic eyeball image and the other the Eskimo cover shot (the four eyeballs in tuxes). I DO still have those and news of Mr. Fox's passing has inspired me to frame them and hang them up after almost 40 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Michael 98145:

... also was a big Tuxedomoon fan -
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Like Matt Groening describes seeing Beefheart & the Magic Band the 1st time & having the limits redefined for him - I imagine the Residents have provided similar service in another era...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Rich in Washington:

Homer was the conceptual brain of the Rez and Hardy the musical heart. It will be interesting how the eyeballs roll on without the latter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Rich in Washington:

Love how it's all Deconstructionist & Sardonic @ the same time it's steeped in & references Pop all the time - in, I think, an actually loving way. As I think Hal Wilner said in Carl Stalling liner notes: The Music of our Subconscious...
Oh - RTD just said something much better...

Huh, thank you The Oscar.

played this stuff so much as a teenager I tend to neglect it now... which is a crime.

That "Intermission" ep from the Mole era is a mighty classic as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm Carmichael:

Finally, I get to my computer.
  5:10pm P-90:

A Residents fan since about 1976, and that’s a long time now when you think about it. But I’m still a little surprised at how personal the loss of Hardy Fox feels to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 5:19pm fred:

Thanks a lot for this set, Fabio. I didn't realize how good/important The Residents were before hearing it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Dave in Vermont:

I just saw Montparnasse Bienvenue (at the VT Intl Film Fest) which at some points reminded me of Lovers on the Bridge as a look at folks on the edge struggling with homelessness and mental health.
Avatar 5:20pm northguineahills:

@Dave: Unless it's Montpelier, France.
Avatar 5:20pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

what Dave in VT said.
Us suburban Maryland folk would likewise have said mont-PEEL-yer, whether or not it's correct in any sense.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Rich in Washington:

P-90: I feel very much the same. I think it's that in the end, he so nakedly told us he was going, took the mask off, literally. I never got to interview him - he wasn't the spokesman like Homer was - who I think he only did it out of sheer necessity, but Hardy sort of revealed himself when he stated his retirement from the group, maybe knowing then that his mortality was coming. So yeah, it hit me hard, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Muricans don't say Sahn LOOey for St. Louis ferinstyance...but there *are* native Francophones in NorthNewEngland here. Kerouac was very much one just over in Lowell, Mass. ...

Well - I believed 'Charlotte' derives from harlot actually...

I have friends in Charlotte. I used to live in Monkton. Saint Albans is "Snallbens." Berlin is "Búrlin," Calais is "Callous." Heh.

@dave in vermont - The Charlotte in Michigan is pronounced "shar-LOT"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...for that matter, my surname is Basso, but it's actually Bisaillon a few ancestors back to Canada - & I'm not even sure how to pronounce that...

Avatar 5:38pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Lived for a very short time in Maine. The missus is from Michigan.

Those two states have hilariously different ways of pronouncing PRESQUE ISLE. For the record, the Michigan preference makes no sense to me.
Avatar 5:38pm βrian:

It's the law of conservation of the R. If you drop it somewhere, you must insert it elsewhere. The BBC does this all the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Dave in Vermont:

the old intrusive R- makes up for the deleted R in other regions so US dialects all balance out
Avatar 5:39pm βrian:

Not Charlevoix, @Dave in VT?
Avatar 5:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Being a DC/MD lifer & overly influenced by the Baltimore-caucasian-redneck patois, I am not to be trusted in these matters. The MD speech does come out prominently after about sixty beers.
Avatar 5:40pm spodiodi:

I remember when Taco Bell first came East, and they had pronunciations on their menu, including that for "TAH ko" (hue hue hue)

Presque Aisle?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Rich in Washington:

Damn the BBC and their English received pronunciation! Keep your bloody Rs to yourself!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Michael 98145:

(so, Presque Isle is almost an island ...?? )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Rich in Washington:

I can just hear a midwest twang TAAco!
Avatar 5:42pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

those from MI would say "presk EEL" whereas ME folk would pronounce the ISLE as you'd expect.

Meanwhile, that Residents set caused your clergyman to hammer this enormous coffee far too quickly. Life is becoming wonderful.
Avatar 5:43pm fred:

@Rich: so that's what these people where throwing in the water, not tea, Rs (make senses too, adding tears to an ocean wouldn't make much of a difference)
Avatar 5:43pm βrian:

"Eel" would be closer to the French. And English would have it as presk-ew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm chresti:

...and why was Saint Martin in the fields? I mean COME ON.
  5:46pm Brendan:

What? Speak Engrish.
Avatar 5:46pm northguineahills:

Don't worry Rich, the South keeps the balance w/ non-rhotic Rs (at least we used to, that part of the accent is fading fast).
Avatar 5:47pm βrian:

@RTD: Wasn't he outstanding?
Avatar 5:47pm northguineahills:

You're totally spot on RTD! Us Michiganders have a schizophrenic approach to French pronunciations. Macincac Island = Mac-uh-naw. Michilimacinac = Mish-e-la-mac-e-nack. Detroit = DEE-troit

I love Carax's movies. Lovers On The Bridge is great, I esp. love Holy Motors and Mauvais Sang
