A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hi. Sorry i missed most of the knitting chat. Trouble, did you see that the Black Power show that was at Tate Modern last year and you played some songs from its soundtrack is at the Brooklyn Museum now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am sphere:

i get plenty of "sirs" at 48, but im in a "sir"-oriented environment.

Hello Trouble, Michele and listeners
My workplace has been holding knitting lessons this year. One of my many bosses has been taking them, in what I can only call a boss move
Avatar 9:51am northguineahills:

It kept the immigration process more streamlined...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Granny Spicy Tuna:

We still need a good gender neutral word, if we're going to keep using ma'am and sir. This has been an ongoing debate among the enbies…
  9:51am queems:

sir has a totally different connotation than ma’am though. ma’am is matronly and sir is just sir
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Granny Spicy Tuna:

And matronly has a negative connotation because this is a misogynist society. Why should there be something wrong with being a mother, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am sphere:

@ queems - yea. i guess its a patriarchal thing - marriagability of women, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am melinda:

@sphere yes.
Avatar 9:54am fred:

@sphere: I think that was the idea, like were you the property of your father or husband
  9:54am queems:

@granny spicy tuna exactly. once you’re someone’s mother, your value (aka fuckability) is decreased exponentially
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am melinda:

@Granny: mir?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am zpulpa:

WowWW !!!! the Moki Cherry artwork is absolutely fabulous!!!! good morning everyone! hi Trouble hi Michele!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Stevel:

Some cultures (Burma, for instance,) refer to respected elders as auntie or uncle. Still, a gender-neutral word would be nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am kuba:

@melinda, gst: sa'am?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Michele:

@apulpa - Isn't it fantastic?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Granny Spicy Tuna:

My friends call me Granny (and the little kids call me Aunt Fluffy), but they're all aware that i am a nonbinary Granny/Aunty. Cousin's a friendly, neutral word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am zpulpa:

@ Michele im familiar with her work just through album art but had no idea she made so many and such amazing fabric pieces!! This on in particular though. yayy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am MD:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Michele:

Hope everyone will throw in a little cash this fundraiser. We are so close!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Troublenauts! Will pledge again when next credit card cycle begins.
@GST - I like how Ellie May's chimp was Cousin Bessie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Granny Spicy Tuna:

@melinda mir is kinda like the neutral pronoun, zir. Sa'am, hmm… there is the title Mx, that is used like Mr, ms and Mrs, which i ask folx to call me, if they like
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am steveo:

well that made me want to go to marfa
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am melinda:

It bugs me when women over a certain age are reflexively referred to as grandmas. If that happens to me when I enter the grey zone I'll get pissed, and then they will probably just see me as a bitter old hag.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am sphere:

it's amazing how much work people have invested in creating a non-gendered pronoun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am futurescamp:

Very true about cleaning though I can't vouch for that brand of broom, I am a vacuumer at heart
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am zpulpa:

dang im really feeling like i should cancel my YMCA membership and become a pledge for lifer with the money saved..... seems obvious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Some languages don't distinguish gender in a pronoun at all.
Avatar 10:01am fred:

I'm not sure, but I think a law was passed in France to get rid of the Madame/Mademoiselle distinction in official forms
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Patrick:

WOW! what cant Nina Katchodourian do?!?! amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Granny Spicy Tuna:

@sphere if there are no words to describe who you are and how you identify, it feels like being erased from existence
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Webhamster Henry:

Hey!- have Nina back sometime!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Granny Spicy Tuna:

@fred UK has Mx on official documents
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am melinda:

@Granny do you pronounce it "mix" or "em ex"? Words need to be pronounceable if they're to catch on and not just make a point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am sphere:

@spicy tuna - i am a professional writer and generally our office uses "they" if necessary, but our work doesn't really require pronouns for the most part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Granny Spicy Tuna:

from the interwebs: Which has the exact same vowel sound as the two pronunciations of "Ms". So you pronounce Mx exactly the same as Ms, but with a "ks" (or "x") sound on the end, in place of the "z" sound in Ms. From my knowledge, the "short e" məks pronunciation is somewhat more common than the "short i" mɪks pronunciation.
  10:05am famous original sugarwerewolf:

I have to put Mr/Mrs/Ms when I enter customers' info. I would love to just put Mx. for everyone!
Avatar 10:05am fred:

Some of my coworkers say "don't worry about Miss or Mrs, just go with Dr"; that it still shocks people shows there's a lot of work left
Avatar 10:05am Dances with Moomins:

I always thought ma'm is kinda showing honor without meaning anything about age. simple respect. But then to men I don't say 'yes sir' ( so military ) I say 'yeah Babe' ( some guys hate that! ) Honey is ( to my ear) really sexist. Maybe I have to stop tawkin to people.
Avatar 10:06am Chris from DC:

Really looking forward to that Dropped Stitch/Klown package tour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am futurescamp:

Where I work everyone puts their pronouns in their email signature, in the interest of making it less onerous on nonbinary people to make it an issue and somewhat normalize everyone to think about how they use pronouns.
Avatar 10:06am Diezel Tea:

Howdy from Armenia, which coincidentally you just played Mrs. Katchadourian (though perhaps spelled Khatchadourian?)
  10:07am hendrix wolfbat:

If it's spelled like this jereon it sounds like yarune
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Webhamster Henry:

Justin Vivian Bond is a Mx. One of my kids is a they. I don't know if they've settled on an honorific.
Dr. would be great! Especially with the current Dr. Who.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am kuba:

for the record: i was kidding about sa'am. my profession (computer people) sometimes loves to put things into binary categories (pun intended), or ternary, or x-nary... and over that they don't realize how easy it is just to leave a form field customizable, or optional, or just get rid of it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Granny Spicy Tuna:

I am appreciating all of these interesting and respectful comments about gender and pronouns. I say if you want to smash imperialism, you gotta smash the social binaries!
Avatar 10:08am Wild Neil||Peace All:

In the USAF we were taught every civilian male is sir, every female is m'am. It was simply as sign of respect, just like we were required to do for officers. It does tend to make others feel old, so is it an ageist practice, or just respect?
I think Dr. Is a huge sign of respect. I call my dentist Doctor mainly because he is so amazingly awesome fixing my broken down old teeth.
@Webhamster Henry-how old is your child that is a they?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Granny Spicy Tuna:

@kuba: yeah, computer folx gotta play with binaries! I thought sa'am was pretty funny. I encourage people to have fun with the wordplay. It doesn't have to be a sad chore.
Avatar 10:09am Wild Neil||Peace All:

My son was a Talking Toilet for Holloween. I made it out of furniture foam and Instructables helped. A Toilet with teeth from Captain Underpants. I was Flavor Flav mainly because he is so awesome a singer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Granny Spicy Tuna:

@Wild Neil this is also an ageist society, too. We lose so much by worshiping the young and ignoring our elders.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am kuba:

@GST: agree 100%. experiment and have fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Webhamster Henry:

@WildNeil They are 19.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Ike:

Given recent news in Newark, I sure hope that Brita filters filter out lead! Otherwise I should've developed lead-related superpowers from all the years I lived and worked in Newark. And lead-related superpowers are the lamest superpowers. Your toes learn to start talking but they just curse in every language on Earth and only at bad drivers. @WN, Flavor Flav is always a good choice because you get to wear a dinner-plate-sized clock as a necklace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Yet i must acknowledge that most of the emerging language i have learned about gender has come from the youth. VOTE, you young folx! Turn this disaster around! I believe in you!
Avatar 10:13am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Granny Spciy Tuna-my wife noticed this at her job at Home Depot. There is a 70 year old woman who says "she is a princess" and dresses like a 20 year old. The older folks are more respected for their wisdom in Poland apparently. We DO worship youth here. I am happy to be a crabby old man like Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino.
@Webhamster Henry-at what age did they choose this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am redkayak:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am melinda:

Avatar 10:16am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Talk about gender bending pronouns, I was called Grandma at age 10 because I had a nephew at that age. Well, one kid took it on and that nickname kinda never stuck. I have been Hammy, Horse, Wild Neil and even the N word for awhile on the school bus. By the way, I am not black!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Granny Spicy Tuna:

I also have a friend who calls me Father, so i get around…
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am kuba:

@wild neil: re: poland, btw: i noticed that the usual split old-conservative, young-progressive is less prevalent there. less hope for the future. might be just me, though.
Avatar 10:18am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Kuba-Poland is undergoing Nationalist tendencies right now. Many are shocked and dismayed of course. Well, not by me of course, but yeah, there are a lot of young people that are conservative over there. I hear from my sources that Generation Y is looking to be fairly conservative here also.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am tim from champaign:

@Passaic - I've also lived and voted in Michigan and Illinois. WA's approach is by far the best. The voter guides are so helpful. Each candidate provides a bio including organizations that support them. The proposals are written out and then summarized as to what a pro or con vote means. An opposing rebuttal is provided and then a response to that rebuttal. It's hard to believe that this is provided by the state to voters.
Avatar 11:11am fred:

Also, please vote down-ballot. It will help little-known voice get a platform, and many impactful decisions are made on a local level. By the time you get there, make every one of your votes count

Here in Ulster Co NY there is a ballot question re redistricting that is so confusing it is unclear whether its an attempt by the right to gerrymander or by the county to clarify the its ability to oversee attempts at redistricting. I still don't know how I'm going to vote.
Avatar 11:16am northguineahills:

@fred: I've voted in every election possible since I turned 18. In 2000. I was unfamiliar w/ the NYC lever system, and my vote was voided. So, I rode my bike to the Brooklyn courthouse to get permission for a new ballot. 5 hours later, I finally got my vote approved. I missed a mid-term exam, but my prof allowed me to retake it. (and I was in NY, where my vote wouldn't matter that much). I take it seriously.
