Howling wind can be spooky
Avatar 3:56pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Hard to quantify what makes some music creepy -- Was 6 years old when ELO's 'eldorado' LP came out and SOMETHING about that thing was extremely supernatural wickedness, per the child-brain. Today it def. has a bit of a melancholy vibe, but... ghosty? not sure..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Carmichael:

My scary movie was Phantasm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm northguineahills:

@chresti: And Howling Wolf can be groovy!

Avatar 4:22pm Parq:

Scott, this is *such* a cool show!
Avatar 4:22pm Jeff Moore:

Still rooting for The Shaggs!

As I mentioned, it was super cool when, at the end of one of those Ann Magnuson / Adam Dugas / Mia Theodoratus "Dueling Harps" shows (probably must've been Octoberish) they did The Shaggs's Halloweeen as the encore. It was excellent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm Carmichael:

Anything with Peter Cushing and/or Christopher Lee was a winner.
Avatar 4:23pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

speaking of kid obsessions; probably got this whole bloody soundtrack memorized. Lovely.
Avatar 4:25pm Parq:

Rev @ .56 -- well, Eldorado had that low-pitch intro, which kind of sets a morose tone. That probably would have done it for me if I'd been little when I heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm dale:

popul vuh is really getting the love lately. i like it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm Carmichael:

Face the Music had that sturm und drang intro with all the screeching violins and the backwards lyrics.
Avatar 4:26pm Parq:

As for the gothic chorus trope of horror music, you could (forgive me if this has already been mentioned), get a whole sub-discussion just out of "O Fortuna".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm dale:

is this from heart of glass? not a horror film but the music certainly imparts doom
Avatar 4:28pm Jeff Moore:

@Parq: for sure. I think Scott may have mentioned Carmina Burana during his thesis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm northguineahills:

Let's read from the Popol Vuh for some real terror (interesting read).
Avatar 4:30pm pumpkinspicerette:

"I see dead people"..."I like beer"...}:^)
Avatar 4:30pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

true 'nuff, Parq 4:25. Also: same year Eldorado came out, saw the film BURNT OFFERINGS, which I haven't seen since, but I imagine is a bit tame(?) but ranks as the first film that actually scared the heebiejeezus outta this tiny kid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm Colloween:

  4:33pm Warwick joe:

Just saw hereditary. I don’t know if I liked it. I mean it seemed like a well made movie. But it just made me angry.
Avatar 4:33pm Parq:

I was *so* easily scared as a kid. The version of "Babes in Toyland" with Oliver and Hardy did such a number on me, but I felt better about it when my dad told me that, when he'd seen it in its original release, it did just the same to him. The spookhouse at Rye Playland (which still stands, in roughly the same form) unnerved me for years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm Scott Williams:

I loved Hereditary, but still wondering how I felt about the ending. But that's typical of that studio, ending with "YEP YOU GUESSED IT!", just like "The Witch" (which I also loved)
Avatar 4:36pm pumpkinspicerette:

"Even a man who is pure of heart
and says his prayers at night
will become a werewolf
when the wolfbane blooms
and the moon is shining bright."
...just sayin'...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

"The Blob," a very absorbing picture.
Avatar 4:39pm Fox:

I'm glad that a movie as difference as Hereditary (much like the Witch) were made, and got so much coverage, but though I thought it was excellently made and acted, I, too, don't know if I actually enjoyed it.
Avatar 4:42pm pumpkinspicerette:

Been watching Kaneto Shindo's "Kuroneko", ("Black Cat in a Bamboo Grove"),whoa, mama, SCARY!!!

Avatar 4:43pm Fox:

I just watched Saw II and Saw III over the weekend for the first time, and I totally enjoyed them! Much better acting than the first one, AND had the chick from The Blob!
  4:44pm melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm Scott Williams:

I keep saying I'm going to watch The Exorcist but then I don't, the 2+ hour running time cuts into my FMU programs. Also, scary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Saw movies are whack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm Scott Williams:

@melinda, watch The Exorcist 2! Seriously. Altho most of it sucks, there's THIS ONE SCENE, my godddddd....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm Carmichael:

Oh yeah, The Ring scared the hell out of me, now that I think about it.
  4:50pm melinda:

@ Scott but I feel obligated to watch the Exorcist first, even though I saw it a long time ago.
  4:55pm melinda:

Ring was the last really scary movie I saw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm tim from champaign:

I watched The Thing for the first time this weekend. I really dug it. Also, a killer soundtrack.
  4:56pm melinda:

Let the Right One In was a top-notch vampire movie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm Michael 98145:

what melinda just said
Avatar 4:58pm pumpkinspicerette:

Melinda, there's a great, creaky old Horror film by James Whale called "The Old Dark House", with Charles Laughton, that's hilarious! It's very weird and has hysterical line readings. Not scary enough for nightmares but definitely creepy. I think Boris Karloff plays a bearded butler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm tim from champaign:

Detroit rock can have a real criminal vibe to it.
  5:01pm melinda:

@geeze I'm not too familiar with old scary movies, although I do remember watching part of the Mummy as a kid and getting scared.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:02pm Ken From Haunted Hyde Park:

Although I haven't seen it, I heard "The Evil Dead" from 1981 was pretty creepy and scary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm Scott Williams:

@HP Ken, yep, an incredibly oppressive tone in that one, well worth it! The sequel was just plain hilarious - and fun.
  5:06pm melinda:

A not-scary but hilarious vampire movie is What We Do in the Shadows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm northguineahills:

I love that one, melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Just a heads-up that you have less than an hour left to play "Dream Warriors" by Dokken. You should probably cue it up now so it's all ready.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm tim from champaign:

@melinda - I cracked up pretty hard when the cops found the werewolf.

Avatar 5:12pm vampyra-ette:

I really love the ancient B&W Universal Horror films from the '30s.
They're much slower and there's no blood, but they leave a lot of space for your own imagination to collaborate. It's almost like being told a story, and the black and white are luminous.
  5:13pm dug:

i made my wife watch that windowlicker video on sat night.
she was like "ok. time to give me the remote"
Avatar 5:14pm Fox:

I'm actually a big fan of Excorcist III. Some goddamn great performances. It was based on a William Peter Blatty novel, and he himself adapted it as a screenplay, and also directed it. The dialouge is fabulous, George C Scott is lovely. It feels so much like a film from the 70's, yet it came out in 1990! And omigosh, Brad Douriff steals the show, as always.
Avatar 5:16pm Fox:

The Hammer Frankenstien films are pretty amazing as well. Peter Cushing plays the character as a total asshole, and he's astounding! He's officially my favorite action star.

Frankenstien Must Be Destroyed and Frankenstien Created Woman are so worth watching.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm Ike:

Brad Dourif is great. I'm not a big horror fan, but Dourif showed up in seemingly every sci-fi show for a while and almost always got typecast as a psycho, but he was always great anyway.

@ vampyra-ettte -- YES! "Carnival of Souls" is AMAZING!
a friend in high school recommended it highly -- but also that one NOT watch it alone! finally it showed up on late night TV -- TOTALLY creeped me out!!! for years i avoided looking out windows at home after dark -- and would get completely spooked if i did (i grew up in an area where, at the time, there was hardly any outdoor lighting, so except for moonlight, it was DARK outside)
years later, i was in college -- it showed up as a double feature with "Hour of the Wolf" at the Bleecker Street Cinema (i think) -- there was hardly anyone in the audience! but, years later, it was re-released and showing at Film Forum -- and there were lines going down the street!

Anyone been to St. John the Divine's Procession of Ghouls with the classic silent horror film and live church organ accompaniment?

I'm not in the suburbs, but I'm the weird guy from the City to a mid/small sized town.

Horrorcore burned bright but briefly. ... For fans of Gravediggaz, Prince Paul also produced a record by a group called Horror City from Hempstead, LI. He put it out for free download 8, 10 years ago, so it must still be out there in the internets. Not bad.

I came from a micro nowhere town to the suburbs. Close enough to the city to dabble and run.

It's great to hear Mike back on the airwaves! If my memory serves me correctly, Mr. Lupika is the one who into introduced 'FMU to Electric Six! Danger Danger and Gay Bar! We are all quite indebted to Mike!

I lived most of my life in Los Angeles and environs, it's more of a sprawl than a city
