This week: Hell or High Water. A Look back on the time when a hurricane knocked WFMU off the air… but not the messageboard!

Twelve years ago Hurricane Superstorm Sandy battered the East Coast and the WFMU studios in Jersey City, NJ. WFMU was knocked off the air for almost a week, but dedication, ingenuity and creativity prevailed as listeners tuned into events on the WFMU.org message boards. In the meantime several DJ’s were able to set up remote studios to bring the station back to life. Tune in as the gIRLs on Fire recounts those events with exclusive interviews with Ken Freedman, Clay Pigeon, Therese, Dan Bodah, Doug Schulkind Jeff Moore and Scott Williams.

A timeline of events by WFMU Messageboards:

Therese Playlist from the eve of the storm on Oct 29th from 12am - 10:30am.

Clay Pigeon’s marathon community playlist from 11pm on Oct 29th - 9am Oct 30th!

Doug Shulkind’s playlist from studio “P” in Pittsburg on Oct 30th from 12pm - 5pm.

Dan Bodah’s playlist from his Brooklyn studio Oct 30th from 6pm - 9pm.

Irwin’s playlist from Ken’s kitchen in Hoboken on Oct 31st from 1:30pm - 6pm.

Ken’s Silent playlist from 10/29 12pm-4pm.

Ken’s State of the Station broadcast from 11/7.

Ken’s first show on the airwaves on 11/9.

Scott’s playlist from 11/5 when we return to the station with electricity!

  7:06pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

12 years? U mean 6 years
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm Richard S:

Just wondering.... Heard on the radio this AM that in some places, people still haven't recovered from Sandy. Which makes me wonder - seriously - how long it will take for Puerto Rico to recover from Maria......
  7:07pm Last White Rhino:

Yeah Super Storm Sandy struck in 2012.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Robert Tables:

Hello! Thanks for all the links.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm melinda:

I was listening to FMU then but not frequently enough to appreciate the enormity of the impact and the efforts that went into maintaining function.
  7:08pm Emily:

Hey everybody! Happy Hurricane Halloween!
  7:08pm Brian B:

@Richard S - drive through Far Rockaway, Queens... not much has changed in 6 years
  7:08pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

Ken was my hero during this time
  7:09pm Listener Robert:

I couldn't listen then because I had no electricity in the house in the Bronx, and no car so no car radio.
Avatar 7:10pm kimzilla:

I love hearing these stories guys. When you have a chance check out all the DJ links in the playlist, there are some amazing archived listener comments.
  7:11pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

Is this going to be a boiler story?
  7:11pm Emily:

Kim’s right—it’s a full-scale experience. You could just listen to this stuff all night...
  7:11pm Bklyn Listener:

Thanks for this.
Avatar 7:12pm dale:

irene and lee filled my basement. sandy was just a ton of wind up here in orange county.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm Ken From Hyde Park:

There's a newspaper article with a picture of Ken on his bike in the water. I don't have the link just now.
Avatar 7:13pm kimzilla:

Were having a hurricane party right here in studio A, pretending that the power is out while we drink and eat twizzlers!
Avatar 7:13pm Jeff Moore:

Short video – Sandy in Downtown Jersey City:

Avatar 7:14pm kimzilla:

I'll look for that article and add it to the playlist Ken, thanks for the heads up.
  7:14pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

Glen jones always had good playlists during storms with x ray
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm melinda:

I've seen that photo of Ken biking through the floodwaters.

  7:17pm Listener Robert:

Just put up the playlist, & if we have the records at home we'll sync to it. Brilliant, huh?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm medson:

Sandy was brutal. Our power was out for 11 days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Richard S:

You need a "We're going Off The Air Temporarily" tape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Folsom:

Avatar 7:20pm dale:

always have fresh and/or rechargeable batteries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm howard in nyc:

Pre-emptively shutting down is a logical, smart approach. It is what hospitals ideally do. The Manhattan VA hospital did this for Sandy; Bellevue and NYU Hospital, further up First Avenue did not, and had near disasters.
  7:22pm Listener Robert:

Trick or Treat on Astor Ave. was spooky, in that a block north of us they never lost power, so the kids would parade onto our block with flashlights, coming around the dark half of a block to get back to Trick or Treating in the other half.
  7:22pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

I wanted another vampire show for Halloween
Avatar 7:22pm dale:

we were listening on a battery powered radio to clay when our power went out and it went out to the mount hope transmitter so i picked up am 740 in toronto REALLY well.
  7:23pm Emily:

Well, Aaron, send us another vampire and we’ll see what we can do...
  7:24pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

But they all suck
  7:24pm Emily:

Badum dum
  7:25pm Aaron in Minneapolis:

Maybe those cars are zombies now
  7:28pm Emily:

  7:28pm Emily:

(that was kind of a stretch. I apologize.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm ultradamno:

They become Christines
  7:30pm Listener Robert:

Huh...so a server has a mount point, same as any asynchronous peripheral device would?
Avatar 7:33pm Jeff Moore:

@Robert: an Icecast mount. See Icecast docs.
Avatar 7:33pm kimzilla:

Some of the comments from this time-
Caryn: 1:48am 10/30
I kinda feel it is my duty as a WFMU listener to stay tuned around the clock to make sure everyone is alright at the station. (Not that that's of any real help, but...) Right now am reduced to checking streams every so often, between naps
Avatar 7:34pm kimzilla:

Kenzo (lastever): 4:41am 10/30
Good thing we moved our servers out of NYC a couple of months ago…
  7:36pm dez:

  7:37pm Emily:

@dez haha what??
  7:37pm Emily:

Oh shit, is that what what’s from?? I have never seen it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm melinda:

I saw a comment on Clay's playlist about having some REO cued up, haha.
  7:38pm dez:

it's the last scene!!
  7:39pm Emily:

Y’all I love Therese.
  7:40pm Listener Robert:

Thanks, Mr. Moore. I'm looking at the Wikipedia entry for Icecast now.

I guess it shouldn't be hard conceptually, in that AIUI what comes from a running disk now is a type of packets, giving any source of packets as an address should be similar.
Avatar 7:40pm kimzilla:

Vicki: 3:52am 10/30
hello! Just woke up and finding out what's been happening - my god! Hope you're all OK, well done staying at the station.
Avatar 7:40pm kimzilla:

What is hilarious is that this whole story is from the VERY short text on the message board.
Avatar 7:41pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I probably said that
Avatar 7:42pm kimzilla:

Please consider pledging to our show if this station gives you the feels. : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Richard S:

I'm a Swag For Lifer, so you're all covered.
  7:45pm Emily:

Thank you to everyone everyone everyone who has pledged so far. You give US the feels.
Avatar 7:46pm dale:

he was all set for the TNP and it was the TN not P.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Richard S:

Ya know, when the Powerball was up in the gazillions, I was dreaming of things I'd do with the $ if I one. One of them was paying for the repairs on WFMU's building....
Avatar 7:47pm kimzilla:

Thanks Richard S and all you other pledgers!
Avatar 7:48pm kimzilla:

I kinda feel it is my duty as a WFMU listener to stay tuned around the clock to make sure everyone is alright at the station. (Not that that's of any real help, but...) Right now am reduced to checking streams every so often, between naps,

What a storyteller.
  7:49pm Colleen:

What a wonderful surprise!!!
Avatar 7:50pm kimzilla:

Vicki - WFMU:
WFMU is currently off the air, being in a power cut in Jersey City. Check the WFMU frontpage for updates. The WFMU servers are far from NY/NJ so this playlist is active. Clay likely has no power himself, and is at the station waiting for it to come back.
Avatar 7:50pm Jeff Moore:

PATH station flooding video

Avatar 7:50pm kimzilla:

Jay/ London: 3:54am 10/30
@vicki I do not think they can leave the station
Avatar 7:51pm kimzilla:

I love reading the listener comments that go alllll night long when the power was out. Check out Clay's playlist on the top of the playlist when you have a few hours.
Avatar 7:52pm kimzilla:

Sandy: 3:52am 10/30
Thinking of WFMU and east coast friends...Take care everyone!
Avatar 7:53pm TDK60:

I was round here during Sandy, but I can't recall much. Luckily I live at the highest elevation in Manhattan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Mr. Pumpy:

You can't even talk about the weather anymore! Shiver in my bones just thinkin'...
