@Michael: Could you ask Andrew if he knows what happend to the songs from 2 BBC series: At the eleventh hour (67-78) and Where was spring (1969)? They were intended for a solo-LP of Ray called Songs I Sang For Auntie / The Ray Davies Songbook in 1971, but most of the songs were never released

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm

Thanks for having me on the show!
Avatar 12:18pm

LPs from the mid-'60s sound better in mono like Andrew said: "punchier," "cohesive." I'd rather hear "Beatles 65" in mono.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Rob Kopp:

@Michael & Andrew: Thanks for the interview
Avatar 12:18pm
Michael Shelley:

My pleasure!

great stuff andrew!! i wish someone would interview about YOUR albums - which are all great great great!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Rob Kopp:

@Andrew: Could you answer my question, further up in this comment?

Rob Kopp a few BbC tracks have been released - see Kinks at the BBC on Discogs -- and a couple others are on a Great Lost Kinks Album bootleg
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm
Rob Kopp:

@dano59: Yes, but Doug Hinman's book lists a few others that have never been released.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm

Ray rejected the BBC songs sung by Jeannie Lamb for release on this set and he could find no further tracks from Where Was Spring in his archive. There are the usual 2 on the BBC disc of the Deluxe Box.
Avatar 12:21pm

DJ Michael: 45s sometimes do jump right off the turntable!

Mono!!! Face To Face and Something Else shine as do the Beatles before Sgt. Pepper.

as for mono vs. stereo debate - it is kinda like the thing: what was it like growing up without a father? you don't know any different until you compare. in other words, we were all fine with our stereo versions, as andrew intimated. until you hear mono mixes, stereo is what we grew up with.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2022 Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Hughie Considine:

ahhh....Now here's a band. if you haven't checked out Andy Partridge's "Complicated Game," a song-by-song extravaganza based on voluminous interviews, it's damn good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Rob Kopp:

@Andrew. Thanks for answering. Such a pity he rejected the Jeannie Lamb-versions. I mean, it's history, and now we still don't know (and probably never will) how those songs sounded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm

A couple of the BBC songs were demoed and he included them in his demo montage on the Deluxe Edition

hughie - is that the same thing as those blog interviews song-by-song that were on the net in the oughts??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Rob Kopp:

@Andres: I also appreciated your email to the KPS email-list

single goin' steady!!!

Ringo used to walk around wearing a button on his lapel that said "MONO". I use one of those small Marshall computer speakers that are mono only...It sounds GREAT>
Frank Zaatar:

Ok, this gets my vote for the #1 song I hate to love. The Jags imitating Joe Jackson imitating Elvis Costello. It should make me shrivel up. But I can't help myself.
Pedro in Arlington:

Today's show is pure brilliance and not just due to the Andrew interview. The Kinks rule as does the MS Show.

Why does this sound like it's running slow?
Avatar 12:29pm

Hughie Considine:

@Clarke, yep, based on those. Some new additions as well. Fascinating stuff. I was moved to break out "Go 2," which I barely ever do, based on the deep dive into "Beatown," a song I never rated that highly. One of those kind of books.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm
Rob Kopp:

We, the Dutch Kinks Preservation Society, tried to get the Kinks to Utrecht in the Netherlands in 2008 to celebrate 40 years of the VGPS-album, but we didn't succeed in bringing them together that year. We had Pete Quaife as guest in 2004 and Ray in 2010, but unfortunately it wasn't to be in 2008. A missed opportunity.

hi folks!

thanks hughie - i WILL be getting that book!! i found andy's remembrances VERY inspiring on a writing/recording level (i.e. stealing ideas!) and read most of them, for a while. but, i am sure i missed some and then i am not sure when they lapsed....
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2022 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm

frank - did u ever figure out what was wrong with your speakers????
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2022 Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
Frank In Queens:

I'm not sure exactly. It sounded better after I switched to vinyl that day and it's been better since. But it sounds like the tweeter isn't always producing a sound in the left channel. I think it's just time for new speakers...

before you do that: switch wires just to see if it is NOT the speakers.

also, the speakers could be repaired - but, not as easy in the city, i guess.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2022 Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
Frank In Queens:

It better not be the wires. I paid good money for them and they're only a few years old.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Hellraiser 2022 Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Frank In Queens:

I'm not sure it's even worth repairing these. They're not very expensive or highly regarded, and I could probably upgrade cheaper than what it would cost to have them fixed.

i don't mean switch the KIND of wires - i mean switch the connections at the amp to the speakers to reverse the right and left and see if the sound stays the same

if the left speaker makes the same noise on the right side - then it may be your amp??
dennis diken:

thanks for a gasser of a show Mikey!

but, you are right - there are certainly some killer deals out there on craigslist, these days. i got a FREE set of camb soundworks bookshelf speakers a few weeks ago.

Hey, I have this single, always liked it (another example of good music from a bad film)...I think this is a bonus cut on the Blood & Chocolate CD (although it didn't have all versions). I remember EC playing this at his B'way shows in '86 (either live or over the sound system before he went on---maybe someone here remembers).

no, i WON the rocktobah

Jeezus, why play the ravings of this idiot? ("We should empower the pharmaceuticals"...huh?) They should make this into one of those "A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste" PSAs.
