Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

this tune is 'nirvana' to me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

Hello, Uncle Michael, Hello ALL! Hope everyone is well and cozy. No shivering, except with delight!
  12:17pm dan:

I figured you had to play The Four Pennies version. Nothing like 1960s British rock marrying a negro spiritual.
Avatar 12:17pm coelacanth∅:

i would like to be in a fir forest presently.
Avatar 12:19pm Franco Twinkie:

I love this! A super block of one of my all time favorites.
  12:19pm dan:

Today's pop music doesn't have the crystal clear harmonies that The Four Pennies have on this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Doug Schulkind:

I preferred the old Christy Minstrels, but the New ones were pretty okay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

coelacanth∅: it is a misty morning, and quite pretty here

  12:24pm davefromtoronto:

i'm still not sure what this song is about...
  12:25pm Dean:

Dang, there's a group out of KC called In the Pines!
Avatar 12:26pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean! It's the weekend. Let's go get some Menudo!
Avatar 12:27pm βrian:

I'm not sure I'd have the intestinal fortitude to belly up to the menudo bar.
Avatar 12:27pm Roberto:

Damn, Dean stole my line. I couldn't help but be reminded of the Dead Parrot Sketch.
  12:28pm Dean:

I'm aiming for a joint a friend recently recommended in El Sobrante. It's called El Trompudo, an unfortunate name in these parts, but it looks promising. Not sure I'll opt, though, for menudo. (Or did you mean the pop group? Did they cover "In the Pines"?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Funky16Corners:

Dean, that is a terrifying thought.
Avatar 12:29pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay, how 'bout some Borrego, Mexico City style?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Asheville Jon:

well, you can add this song to my list of 'i never want to hear this song again in my life' list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Jeff Golick:

My first and pretty much only exposure to this tune came via an episode of MTV Unplugged.
Avatar 12:30pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Good morning Hinksters!
  12:30pm Dean:

I don't know Borrego. What am I missing?
  12:31pm dan:

@ Jeff Golick
That would be the well known version from Nirvana.
  12:31pm Dean:

Don't get me wrong. I like menudo, tripe and all. But I typically prefer something heartier.
Avatar 12:32pm coelacanth∅:

i heard what i thought was the original first, but i guess maybe not.
  12:32pm chresti:

Menudo happens Sunday
Avatar 12:32pm Franco Twinkie:

Dude, If you're gonna drive to El Sobrante, let me recommend Tacos Rodrigues. It's a truck that lives in the parking lot of the Central Market on Appian Way.
Avatar 12:34pm βrian:

If you're going to El Sobrante, you have to have leftovers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Asheville Jon:

ok, gotta turn this off. catch y'all later
Avatar 12:34pm Franco Twinkie:

Borrego=Lamb. It's a weekend thing.
Avatar 12:35pm Franco Twinkie:

Brain, har har!
  12:35pm Dean:

Noted! Thanks. I'm fond of Mercado del Sol in Concord, too.

Heh, @βrian. Muy divertido.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Uncle Michael:

Jon! Lizzie! Sorry, Jon!
  12:36pm dan:

Do you think that the anonymous person that wrote this tune would have thought that decades later it would be sung in Danish?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Uncle Michael:

  12:37pm Dean:

Tell the truth, @UM. Had you already planned this show's theme song prior to learning about Larsen's death? If so, quite a coincidence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Parq:

The discussion of the New Christie Minstrels brings to mind the lampoon version of the band that appeared as principal characters in "A Mighty Wind".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

Where's Mauri?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 12:38pm Franco Twinkie:

Chresti's Pa lives in El Sobrante high in the hills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

The Mexican place that's the closest restaurant to my house serves birria de borrego on weekends and I've become an addict.
Avatar 12:39pm northguineahills:

finish w/ Finnish?
Avatar 12:41pm coelacanth∅:

wow! i love this version!
  12:41pm Dean:

Small world. (Thank almighty god we're not being subjected to dozens of takes on that tune, but I wouldn't mind a version by The Fall.)

I had a decent birria, once, in a joint in unincorporated LA County. Watch the risk of substance abuse, @UM. Birria is a goatway drug.
Avatar 12:41pm Franco Twinkie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Uncle Michael:

Dean, I'm subjecting you to dozens of versions.
  12:43pm dan:

This show is going to break the record for using the word “pines” the most.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Jeff Golick:

Well, why would you get shoes from a railroad man? That's your trouble right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

I've heard a railroad man will drink your blood like wine.
  12:44pm Dean:

Of "It's a Small World," I meant.
Avatar 12:44pm burke:

It's fun to be anticipating lyrics that come out slightly differently
Avatar 12:45pm Franco Twinkie:

Micael, you are really killing it! I was going go outside and pretend to do some yard work, but now I'm planted in front of the screen. Actually, that's fine...I hate yard work.
Avatar 12:45pm coelacanth∅:

Hey Franco!
  12:45pm Dean:

Philips here sounds a bit like Jorma. Hey, Hot Tuna is playing in town, three nights at year-end! Hoping to make it to one show.
  12:46pm Dean:

And I'm hearing Ferron tonight, same venue.
  12:46pm chresti:

It’s almost house of the rising sun here
Avatar 12:47pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, Aqui Es Tescoco in Commerce?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm Uncle Michael:

chresti, I've heard at least one such mash-up.
  12:47pm chresti:

This song, I mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, I've heard at least on House/Pines mash-up.
  12:48pm Dean:

Nope. Birrieria Chalio on Washington Blvd., dubbed Whittier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm The Oscar:

Afternoon! Nice to hear Pernell keep it upbeat with a major key version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Uncle Michael:

  12:50pm Dean:

Nuts, I have to bow out at 10:00 for a long conference call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Uncle Michael:

they can't tell if you're really listening, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm The Oscar:

Any chance of Charlie Feathers in this set?
Avatar 12:51pm Franco Twinkie:

Got it! my CPA is in Whittier. I always wrap a trip to my accountant with food and record stores.
  12:52pm chresti:

Heck dean! Hurry back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Uncle Michael:

No, Oscar.
  12:53pm Dean:

I'm in town every couple of months to visit my mom in La Habra. Were you there in the '90s? Remember Al's Records on Comstock, one street west of Lovell's on Greenleaf?
Avatar 12:54pm coelacanth∅:

here's another good'n
  12:54pm Dean:

Youth Gone Mad! I knew Paul Kostabi and his brother Mark. Used to hang out at the record store where I worked.
Avatar 12:54pm Roberto:

Trapper John, M.D. recorded a version? Dang.
Avatar 12:55pm Franco Twinkie:

No, that wasn't my beat back then. But Lovell's is still the bomb.
Avatar 12:56pm Franco Twinkie:

Mark the painter?
  12:56pm dan:

Dee Dee Ramone lived not far where I live now. Although I only found out about this last year.
  12:57pm Dean:

Tom has been there forever. Used to have a second store far to the east near La Habra, too.

Yep, Mark the painter. He gave me a bunch of his books, and when he was a young non-celebrity he published a book of line drawings, given to me by a friend as a birthday gift. Still have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Rich in Washington:

Wow! This redeems Dee Dee of Funky Man in my book!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Webhamster Henry:

Tim's version is impressive!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Granny Spicy Tuna:

Oh, Tiny! I figured he must've tackled this one at some point. Woah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm The Oscar:

Love me some Tiny Tim, but especially when he went for (deliberately) creepy.
Avatar 12:59pm Franco Twinkie:

That dog had it wired! He really knew how to shake out the silver.
  12:59pm davefromtoronto:

this was before he became a castralto.
  12:59pm Dean:

Wow. My conference call was moved to next week!
Avatar 12:59pm coelacanth∅:

in the style of...
yeah DeeDee is sure no Kurt Cobain vocally but he poured his guts into for sure.
  1:00pm chresti:

Tiny sounds oddly menacing
  1:00pm dan:

Tiny Tim sounds like he had too much LSD before that recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm The Oscar:

Of all the concerts I've seen in my life, the one I'm the proudest of may be seeing Tiny Tim at Spooky World on my tenth birthday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Lane Gray:

I hope the version from Scene 20 shows up. Killer Dobro work.
Avatar 1:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Oscar, tell me about Spooky World.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Lane Gray:

I think Tim sounds wonderfully haunted or haunting. The brass is ... Odd
  1:02pm chresti:

@dean they must be tuned in too!
Avatar 1:02pm coelacanth∅:

i'd be proud too, Oscar. it never would've occurred to me to go see him back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 1:05pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, Do you remember The Fashion Square on Beach Blvd?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Webhamster Henry:

I hope Mary Wing is listening.
  1:05pm Dean:

Very, very clearly, yes. My mom lives nearby.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm The Oscar:

@Franco It's a long-running New England haunted house/theme park that pops up every October. My biggest memory of the show was his suit: it was screenprinted with dozens of pictures of his own face. This was maybe a year or two before he died-- I'm glad I got a chance to see him (and that I was cool/dorky enough to know who he was).
  1:06pm chresti:

So glad to be here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm The Oscar:

(The opening act was Bobby "Boris" Pickett, in case you're curious)
  1:06pm Dean:

I also remember the wonderful Beggar's Banquet Records (no relation to the British label) at Beach and Ball. Bootleg heaven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Lane Gray:

I'm glad you're here, too. And we just gave evidence of it.
Avatar 1:09pm Franco Twinkie:

In October of 1971 my sister and I saw Little Feat there, when they were a quartet, playing outside to a few hippies and some confused shoppers.
Avatar 1:09pm northguineahills:

Looking at the direction of Peter Sellers.... ("The Party", which he was awesome in).
Avatar 1:10pm northguineahills:

Finish isn't Scandinavian, Nordic, yes!
Avatar 1:10pm northguineahills:

  1:11pm Dean:

You saw Little Feat at Fashion Square?! I seem to recall hearing the Esso Trinidad Steel Band there. Heck, I mighta been there for LF, too. I saw them years later when they opened for ELO, Anaheim Convention Center, maybe?
  1:12pm Dean:

La Habra was once that hip? Hard to believe.
Avatar 1:12pm Franco Twinkie:

It was so funny. They were pimpin' there first album.
  1:12pm chresti:

Weird version-almost a lullaby
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Michael 98145:

  1:14pm Dean:

More like gateway to Brea and deep OC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, Mary Wing once did a really great In The Pines set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Michael 98145:

@Dean, guess it depends on your destination
  1:16pm dan:

The female vocals are being done by the great Maggie Bell, Britain's answer to Janis Joplin.

Did Tom Jones do a version?

Dean, The Bahooka has a long history in the SGV. When I was little it was in the parking lot of Thriftymart. When my mom was inside shopping, I would go to the Bahookka at sit on the anti-aircraft gun they had out front. It was on a turret that you could swivel left and right, up and down. It's still in the front of the place that's in the Rosemead location. I just saw it the other day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Lane Gray:

Yes, I was present. It was at the Kennedy Center, and they brought all the tables from The Birchmere (the club in Virginia where they played every week) and set them up behind the band on the stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Lane Gray:

Buck was a cool fiddler. Not the cleanest, but played with heart.

I assume the Nirvana version is going to close this show.

I know my onions on face-up guitars. But I don't know who is with Buck and Don.

Leave it to a radio station in New Jersey to run three hours of a song that mentions "where the sun never shines."
Avatar 2:26pm geezerette:

Exactly! Tim knew every song ever recorded in that era, and probably much more than that. His normal singing voice was actually beautiful.

@Dean - South Jersey is ALL PINES
Avatar 2:28pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm The Oscar:

My old boss at the record store and his staff at the time once got to hang out with Tiny Tim backstage at the Rat in Boston in the '80s. Apparently they spent the better part of an hour throwing song titles at Tim trying to stump him, and he could sing *every single one* from memory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm mauri:

Sounding German? I don't know if I got it. I say "jesh" which is from Finnish version of Mutts as the dog goes yesh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Lane Gray:

Instead of Nirvana the fitting version to end on would be Leadbelly. He wrote it and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Doug Schulkind:

@Webhamster Henry
In the early '80s I shared a stage with Tiny Tim.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Funky16Corners:

Whitcomb is a really interesting guy. Years ago I read his memoir about his early hitmaking days. Great book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Uncle Michael:

Dean, Ian has a show on Luxuria.
  2:33pm Dean:

Sure was, geezer. His show, Fred Hyatt's Opera Show on KPFK, and The Mighty Wurlitzer, all ear-opening.
  2:34pm dan:

Are you referring to Ian Whitcomb?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Uncle Michael:

Ian Whitcomb kicks ass. Anyone who can bring the music hall sound to a more contemporary setting has my respect.

It was donating to either Whitcomb's show or Hyatt's that earned me a translucent green vinyl compilation of tunes sung by Jane Green. Can't find it on Discogs, but it's a beauty. https://www.allmusic.com/artist/jane-green-mn0001933095
  2:42pm davefromtoronto:

did you say "skillet lickers?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Doug Schulkind:

In the early '80s, Tiny Tim made some extra scratch by hiring himself out to perform as the emcee at college talent shows. I was in a band that performed at such a revue at Oberlin in about '80 or '81. Tiny flew in to Cleveland and we picked him up at the airport and drove him in to Oberlin. Tiny was given some thumbnail descriptions of all the acts and he did his shtick and played uke in between all the performances. Tiny Tim was possibly the smelliest person I have ever been proximitous to.
  2:43pm Funky16corners:

@Jeff - I hadn’t heard that. He came to live in the US during the early 60s and via his hits managed to intersect with pretty much all pop culture circa 65/66
  2:44pm Funky16corners:

@LaneGray - I’m pretty sure Norma Tanega recorded in NYC, so I don’t think Billy Strange was involved
Avatar 2:46pm geezerette:

Doug, haha! I've heard that about him! (Poor Miss Vicki.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Jeff Golick:

Sorry, Larry -- cross-post. Was riffing on that Russian still missing in the Pine Barrens.
  2:46pm Marie:

Absolutely loving your show today Uncle Michael. Thank-ee! Hi all!
  2:46pm rw:

Doug, that's a cool story! My Dad played Tiny Tim in a community play in the late 60s or early 70s. He went to the theater supply and asked for nose putty and they told him he didn't need any. Also... I have a memory of seeing Tiny Tim on a TV interview and there was a box of Depends in the background. Not sure if it's that's a real memory or not but I'm pretty sure.
  2:47pm dan:

It's Loretta Lynn techno
  2:47pm rw:

I've been listening to this song all morning and I'm still not really sure what it's about.
  2:48pm Funky16corners:

@Doug - Having heard a bunch of Tiny’s Howard Stern appearances, his descriptions of his weird hygiene regimen would seem to bear that out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm Uncle Michael:

L.O.T.! Marie! RW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Doug Schulkind:

Regimen? We don't need no stinkin regimen.
  2:49pm Funky16corners:

  2:49pm Marie:

I would love to hear about Tiny's weird hygiene regimens....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm chresti:

  2:50pm Funky16corners:

@Doug - Stinkin’ regimen is right!
  2:50pm Dean:

Just occurred to me: Pine-Sol.
  2:50pm Marie:

One version seems to imply the singer killed his father, like his father had slept with his girlfriend...
  2:50pm Funky16corners:

@Marie - it involved adult diapers and lots of lotion (no kidding)
  2:51pm Marie:

:>) I was going to ask if it involved cheese....

When I saw Tiny Tim with Brave Combo years back, we were convinced he was wearing Depends. I'd also read some comment somewhere by Sting that he'd played with Tiny Tim, and that TT had an incredibly large book (i.e. repertoire of tunes)...
Avatar 2:58pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

My husband loves Blood on the Saddle - wonder if he knows this song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - He fancies himself as MAINLY an interviewer these days, though he divides his time about 50/50 between that and hassling his staff. Back in the day, Tiny Tim didn't need much coaxing. He spewed weirdness non-stop
