Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Ken From Hyde Park:

Side theme for today can be about discovering WFMU. How many folks came across the station while seeking something else?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am The Oscar:

I feel like whenever I try to come up with "proper name" songs I just come up with a bunch of Wesley Willis.
  9:30am Brendan:

I just noticed the MLK song points out a time discrepancy in another song. The singer says he was assassinated on an early evening evening April 4. U2's Pride in the name of love says early morning April 4. Conspiracy theorists have at it.
  9:30am JakeGould:

I first discovered WFMU back in around 1992 when I moved into my first adult apartment in Park Slope. Then I traded beads and baubles for land and took over a Native American territory.
Avatar 9:32am Roberto:

I portrayed Marcus Garvey for a presentation for my AP U.S. History class in high school. I remember trying to pick up a Caribbean accent by watching those 7-Up commercials with Geoffrey Holder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am The Oscar:

I sought it out (which I suppose you have to outside of the NJ/NY area). As a teenager getting into weirdo records in the late '90s, I kept stumbling across the name "Irwin Chusid" in liner notes, and we all know where that rabbit hole leads.
Avatar 9:36am Roberto:

I'll tell you what's controversial: is it controverSHal or controverSEEal (as Joe just pronounced it)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am pantz:

I worked with a guy from New Jersey when I lived in Denver. He went on and on about WFMU, so I checked it out. That and his excellent recipe for roasted lamb are the two best things he offered me.

Bono got the time of MLK’s assassination wrong? I’m kinda of stunned a pop music star would get the facts wrong. Geez, Bono!

Avatar 9:48am Rocky Horror:

@annie Democrracy Now's studios were fludded out during Supper Hurrican Sandy and SMK let them use WFMU to broadcast from. During Thier time at WFMU They changed the show name to Democracy Now in Exile. Democracy Now couldn't go back to their studios because of a coo going on there with the station

I was scanning the dial on a battery operated boombox in my squat (no electricity) on E 9th st in like '89 when I heard a girl reading a wierd story about a dog. I was like WTF, and had to hold the antenna just so. It was Bronwyn C, and I have been listening ever since.

Crate... etal....
I was scanning the dial early 1980s looking for Evan Funk Davies at WNYU... FMU was having a fundraiser... Whoever was on was threatening to only play "HOTEL CALIFORNIA"
unless the phones started ringing - I knew something special was happening!!! - Is still happening!!
  10:02am JakeGould:

I think of all of the Ramones’s I care about, CJ is like -1,000,000
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am crateslinger:

Morphe - that's funny, because Matt Warwick was probably not even alive then. Something about them Eagles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am annie:

ok, it wasn't hurricane sandy, i was moving to NC then. my discovery of fmu was much earlier than that, early 90s...anyway, i'm glad i found it. brain mush...i DO recal tamar's show, doug's show, tom sharpling's show(which i thought was GENIUS, especially philly boyroy and the whole bobblehead thing), yeah,'nem eagles... and bronwyn c did a bookshow.. my brain was so happy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am crateslinger:

I was at Joey Ramone's birthday party at Downtown Beirut in 1990. When he walked in I was like "Holy Shit" to my girlfriend and she was like calm down loser.
Avatar 10:06am Joe McG:

@mike: Wow, I had no idea! How awful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am heyitschris:

@Morphe funny you mention Hotel California. On the trail I run on this morning some guy was blaring it on his device instead of using headphones. He was too slow to pass me and this was the only time I've asked someone to please turn their music down.
Avatar 10:06am Rocky Horror:

@annie: Although WFMU has traditionally eschewed news-oriented programming, the station volunteered its airwaves in September 2001 to become the temporary home in the New York area for Amy Goodman's Democracy Now! program (which was renamed Democracy Now! In Exile), after it was "banished" from WBAI and the Pacifica Radio Network during a highly controversial "coup" of WBAI's station management by Pacifica's national Board of Directors.

In a similar example of its support of community broadcasting, WFMU began voluntarily hosting the webcast of legendary New Orleans jazz station, WWOZ, when its studio and transmitter were destroyed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. WFMU also took online donations on behalf of WWOZ, raising over $300,000 towards the rebuilding of the station. (from Wikipedia)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am crateslinger:

Sorry if I'm overposting. Bossman insists today is not a holiday, and I am in client management.... so I have nothing at all to do. I brought a toy drone, and I have today's crossword puzzle, but mostly just sitting here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Devin B.:

A classmate recommended FMU shortly after I moved to NY for grad school in late 2001. He used the old, "If you don't like it, wait 15 minutes" line. I was hooked. Love all the late night shows, especially Stan. Weekends too - Cherry Blossom Clinic, Greasy Kid Stuff, Jeff Sarge, Jonesy. Lost track for a few years when I left the area. Got back on board around 2015 when I finally got sick of NPR.
  10:16am JakeGould:

The thing is that “If you don't like it, wait 15 minutes…” line doesn’t really work for those atonal “marbles in a blender getting crushed by a dumpster” kinda shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Devin B.:

Wait 15 minutes, unless Bryce is on in which case more like 55?
  10:18am Neil M:

I love this set and episode so much. Conceptually and musically. Always incredible. Time for all the great bands to record their "Joe McGasko" track.
Avatar 10:19am Rocky Horror:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am crateslinger:

Word, pantz. I did it online so if it weren't correct I wouldn't have got the happy chime sound. I did mispell it on the forum, and then corrected it. Not sure how I could get that wrong!

well, all i know is my son was ten, he was born in 83, i had just moved into a new house and we used the new internet service using dial-up. i had no clue as to who owned the station, i was just enthralled by it.. there was this new thing called "streaming" and i went down that slippery slope of internet radio. ok, off to work to beat new and different dead horse. thanks for the show joe!

Great show. Despite only hearing bits and pieces.

@tadpoles, my admiration for Sparks continues to grow. Style, grace, wit, originality, smarts, and endless hooks. What's not to like?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Phillippe Bastille:

How about "Alice Long" by Boyce and Hart?

I suppose the Drive by Truckers' "Steve McQueen" might not be too FCC friendly...
Avatar 10:56am Joe McG:

@jmr3: Yeah, I have to be careful. @Paul: I got Picasso last time and I think I'll skip the Bowie since everyone knows it by heart.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Ken From Hyde Park:

I don't recall my exact moment of WFMU discovery, but it would've been soon after 90.1 (then known as WXHD) was added. In those days, I was constantly scanning the FM dial to find better music and avoid commercials.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am pantz:

How about In Memory of Elizabeth Cotton by fIREHOSE?
Avatar 10:59am Joe McG:

@pantz: If it were called "Elizabeth Cotton," it would be in.

I'm assuming "Martin Scorsese" by King Missile isn't on the docket ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am crateslinger:

@NGH, I hardly even ever spoke to WFMU listeners until this forum. I had one friend who is still listening from Thailand, and I have seen him post once or twice, but otherwise just here and record fairs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am lukavino:

i know it is not eligible, but the idea of hearing Oak Ridge Boys - "Elvira" come on assuming it was about the Mistress of the Dark is making me laugh to myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am ChrisB.:

"Johnny Carson," by The Beach Boys?
  11:03am David in London:

Joe, would you consider Alex Chilton by The Replacements?

Tom Courtenay by YLT!

Too bad Hank, Karen And Elvis by Young Fresh Fellows doesn't qualify. Three-in-one and hilarious to boot.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Krys O.:

First heard about WFMU in the Upsala College cafeteria back in late 1981. The person who tipped me off to their being a radio station in the basement of the dorm was John Morris who specifically went to Upsala to do a show. Suffice it to say, I started to spend a lot of time there, even working in the office and being paid by the college. Always found it odd that the college never mentioned the radio station when my parents and I visited the school.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Phillippe Bastille:

That's a secret only Boyce and Hart would know... Giving it a little thought, they may have used Alice Long because a lot of stuff rhymes with long. I guess I'll retract the suggestion so I don't violate the purity of the show...
Avatar 11:05am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Jake Gould-not sure exactly where, lemme check a map, it was not too far from the F train stop and it was near a graveyard in a building with a factory downstairs (sewing) and the artists lofts upstairs. THAT was another street.
