This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hi J_K! and hello to your piles! Typee is pretty cool, you can really feel its influence on basically every exotica artifact that would follow it. My copy had some excellent illustrations as well, which I enjoyed

Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

this little library LP recorded at Umiliani's Sound Work Shop studios, I believe
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

Covarrubias' work on this book is gorgeous, but it really is mind-boggling how often he'll directly contradict the details in the text. the book is all descriptions and barely any plot, so it strikes me weird to just draw things that specifically aren't described.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm chresti:

It's a nice room. With rugs and skins and comfortable chairs and an excellent sound system

Better then yesterday, just at my first (albeit small) meal in two days. Actually got a decent night's sleep last night. I find seeing art or live music (and the booze) helps (like I did last night).

rare Garson here. no one ever talks about this record, i find

damn I had no idea that this Mort Garson existed
Avatar 8:17pm Little Danny:

How's the rest of the LP?
Avatar 8:19pm Flash Strap:

it;s pretty cool! it's a soundtrack, so a little shapeless. like the satanci records a bit, but with less scary vibes, somewhat more descriptive in a cinematic way
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm JtotheK:

@Little Danny - neither. did. i. internet research shows 2 tracks were issued again on later Garson records.

Avatar 8:31pm TDK60:

Anyone seen the 'Ed Wood' movie? There's a scene at a party with a weirdo organist.
Avatar 8:32pm Little Danny:

Thanks Evan. I'm credited as the researcher and curator on that set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm JtotheK:

@TDK - excellent film. in fact, i referenced it earlier this week - though i embarrassed myself by initially remarking about 'amazing kreskin' when i meant 'amazing criswell'. imagine how foolish i looked.
Avatar 8:34pm Little Danny:

Heh, I have no idea. I'll have to go reread my notes on it
Avatar 8:37pm hyde:

aahhhh, i am finally connected
  8:41pm still b/p:

My main recall scene from Ed Wood bio-flick is one of his typically awful scenes being shot, and then the set is accidently and quite obviously bumped by actor and shake-wobbled. He's asked about a retake. He says with pleasant enthusiasm that it's fine.
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

@LD: I had no idea! but it had your fingerprints all over it!
Avatar 8:42pm Flash Strap:

Hi B/P!
Avatar 8:42pm Little Danny:

Very fine taboo exposition. Spot on in nailing it to a specific context in academic anthropology
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

@TDK: if i remember right, that scene is a take on Korla Pandit?
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

@LD: i'd love to either read or write a book on the history of "taboo" and its usage
Avatar 8:45pm TDK60:

Didn't know K Pandit, DJ FS. Will hafta look up!...
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

back to the Numero Uno comp: now that I know that you worked on it, I desperately need to get a physical copy so I can luxuriate in real space with it
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 8:48pm Little Danny:

Lemme email ya Evan
  8:48pm still b/p:

This may now be my favorite version of Stranger in Paradise.
Avatar 8:48pm TDK60:

Wow, Wikipedia says Korla Pandit played a cameo in Ed Wood. Now I know; learning about exotica right here!
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

oh, that's right! it's actually him?
Avatar 8:49pm Little Danny:

There are some amazing Pandit stories out there. There's also a documentary floating around, though I've not seen it
  8:51pm still b/p:

If Pandit hadn't actually existed, David Lynch would've invented him in one of his movies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm JtotheK:

Re: The Korla documentary - it's worth a watch! (I caught on one of the streaming services.)
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

the director sent me a screening link and asked me to write about it, back when it came out, but i didn't have the time and so never watched it. sort of a missed opportunity, though, who knows if it's any good?

not me, anyway
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

ah damn, JtotheK knows!
Avatar 8:52pm quinn:

oo that guitar oo
Avatar 8:52pm quinn:

or whatever it was
Avatar 8:53pm Little Danny:

Would you consider this lavishly arranged Umiliani a library record, Evan?
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

there was a period where I was researching Pandit and all these otherwise pretty interesting articles on postcolonial identity myths were behaving as though he were an actual Indian man, from India, which he is not. one of those strange holes in knowledge that you see from time to time. i think he's from St. louis, and he's African-American
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm doctorjazz:

Alright, time to leave the office, loving the sounds, catch you next time
  8:57pm still b/p:

If you snap a paddle in a starfish canoe, does it regrow/repair itself?
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

@LD: basically, yeah. it's actually extremely spare, compared to the film work. all done on custom synths in his home studio, for his own label. I don't know how hard he tried to get them in the production circuit though. they're basically private press, or pure research, like a lot of Oram's or Raymond Scott's stuff
Avatar 8:59pm northguineahills:

That Shoji Yokouchi was new to me, dig!

@Evan: You're correct about Pandit (another random record I bought on a whim, b/c it had the word, "organ" in it.
Avatar 9:00pm quinn:

oo i love this too

Avatar 9:06pm Little Danny:

Thanks Flash. I have that LP and had no idea those were synths!
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:06pm coelacanth∅:

i'm generally happy with mbiras and xylophones (actual xylophones)
Avatar 9:07pm coelacanth∅:

so, what does "typee" mean?
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

I think it's a mix, he used a lot of real percussion instruments but also experimented a lot so it's hard to say. cool LP to have !
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

do you think of it as a library LP? curious
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

@C.: it's the title of Melville's novel, an account of his time spent as a sort-of captive among the Typee people of Nukuheva in the Marquesas
Avatar 9:12pm coelacanth∅:

okay,thank you.
so, that Umiliani track maybe wasn't an actual wooden percussion instrument?
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

that last one probably was, yeah. i don't know about the tracks from Polinesia, i shouldn't have said it was "all done" on synths, i just meant that that was his big thing on those records. real solo in the studio recordings, with a big emphasis on exploring his machines, even while he's playing with exotic wthnomusicology
Avatar 9:15pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:16pm coelacanth∅:

if so i'm impressed by the sound gotten from a synthesiser!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm chresti:

Avatar 9:17pm Little Danny:

Nope, I have a buncha those Umiliani Omicrons but have never bothered to really research 'em. Clearly they were manufactured as themed sets, if not marketed that way. (That's why I wondered if they were used in the library sense in the '70s and '80s

at the least, they're as library-adjacent as you can be, down to the conceptual framing and aesthetic. The lines blur there, esp. with guys like Umiliani who did do so much library work.
