A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am The Oscar:

My "band" and I in high school once recorded a series of "bird song" bits, which were mostly an excuse to make up silly fake bird names and ridiculous noises. I should really dig those out.

For those who don't know, the first hour or so of Give The Drummer Stream's "Neighbor's Noise" with Jesse Kaminsky is a mix of field recordings (sometimes natural, sometimes urban)
Avatar 10:01am JakeGould:

@Trouble: So in the great scheme of things, it’s hilarious that a nominated justice for the Supreme Court would go to a UB40 concert and then get into a bar fight.

Anyway… MORE BIRDS!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am zopa:

Oh Trouble, I really needed sing to the moon right now. I'm here on the right coast for work and my wife is on the left coast, and I miss her dearly. Thanks for the comfort.

Avatar 10:08am đ¢ ÞäŦ:

this is amazing.
  10:10am Brendan:

This is good when I feel all wound up.
Avatar 10:12am JakeGould:

@Trouble: It’s pure comedy honestly: “Kavanaugh Was Questioned by Police After Bar Fight in 1985” www.nytimes.com...

Setting: “He said that the altercation happened after a UB40 concert on Sept. 25, when he and a group of people went to Demery’s and were drinking pints. At one point, they were sitting near a man who, they thought, resembled Ali Campbell, the lead singer of UB40.”

MagicMoment™: “When the man noticed Mr. Ludington, Mr. Kavanaugh and the others looking at him, he objected and told them to stop it, adding an expletive, Mr. Ludington said. Mr. Kavanaugh cursed, he said, and then ‘threw his beer at the guy.’”

Avatar 10:13am northguineahills:

Avatar 10:13am JakeGould:

The ting is that at that point, Brett had no reason to believe the guy wasn’t the lead singer of UB40. So in the great scheme of things, he—in his mind—attacked the lead singer of UB40 because the guy dared to say “Stop staring at me!”
  10:14am kevlicki:

Morning trouble!
Doesn’t look like my previous comment went up. We missed you at the Interference benefit last weekend. We had protest song karaoke and a pleasant social event.
It occurred to me afterwards that It was missing you!
Avatar 10:15am đ¢ ÞäŦ:

Supreme Court material, no doubt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Itzall Ablurr:

Anecdote, re, Monade: saw them play in Atlanta after the release of "A Few Steps More", they were great but there were MAYBE 100 people in a hall made for 10 X that. Apparently it was an unannounced stop by a band that most people had never heard of. I spoke with her after the show and she was, as you might expect, delightful and extremely appreciative of my (borderline gushing) love for her and her music.
Avatar 10:16am northguineahills:

@Jake: and it was Chris Dudley who went on to play for the knicks and trailblazers, rare Ivey League NBA material!
  10:17am Sam:

Good morning! That album is Monstre Cosmic, not Monstre Comic.
Avatar 10:17am Sem:

How sweet is this song. Beautiful choice.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Itzall Ablurr:

orudy, that is cause and effect at work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am melinda:

Trouble the playlist says laura mvulva, should it be mvula? Not to pile-on with typo spotting...
  10:22am Brendan:

@JakeG As bad as it looks when we delve into the nominees’s past, I’ve made an even more horrific discovery. Given that he would have a lifer appointment, i ran his likeness through automated age progression software to get a rendering of what he will look like: https://g.co/kgs/SYJapM
  10:26am prudy:

brendan; i know what my aging process looks like, not sure i want to see that of those I loathe. Orudy is Prudy
Avatar 10:28am Roberto:

Gettin' bozzy up in here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Itzall Ablurr:

Re, the Boz- quite different from his "hits" of the 70s, better in some ways, in my opinion.
Avatar 10:29am JakeGould:

@Brendan: Ha! I’ve been talking casually around work and with friends about how America seems to have lost touch with the beauty of “snobs versus slobs” comedies and their message of “Slobs win!”

Then I realized, people like Kavanaugh watch “Caddyshack” and genuinely think it’s a tale of how Judge Smails was wronged and how Al Czervik is a meddling a-hole.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am zopa:

Tears straight thru this whole set. A river of 'em...
  10:39am Brendan:

@JakeG Low brow movies are great. I think the committee should make Kavanaughty do a test read of Ted Knight’s lines. If the glove fits (so to speak)... ‘I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.’
  10:41am Jim Wilson:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Dave in Vermont:

@JG A Way With Words on NPR hypothesized that the Revenge of the Nerds marked the rise of nerds/geeks being chic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Dave in Vermont:

the beginning thereof
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Passaic River Blues:

@JakeGould: hahaha Absolutely. To young Bart O'Kavanaugh "Animal House" was a message film about how a fifth column of untermenschs and class traitors besmirched the good name of Daddy Dean Wormer and the Omegas. Which begs the question, in Kavanaugh's mind who is Neidermeyer: PJ, Tobin, or Squi?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Granny Spicy Tuna:

Right on, Trouble! Tell it like it is!!!
  10:47am famous original sugarwolf:

And who always loses in the slobs vs snobs?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Itzall Ablurr:

He was a freaking LAW CLERK. Bush made him a "judge", and NOW look. F#cking ridiculous and FOR LIFE, folks.
Avatar 10:48am northguineahills:

How hard is it not to assault someone? 2/3rds of my female friends (some, former gfs) have been sexually assaulted, some violently....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Itzall Ablurr:

Also, so much for my vow of NO POLITICAL posts...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Uncle Michael:

  10:53am Mike Wolf:

Thank you Trouble for squaring up to the bullshit that is going on and presenting another set of awesome songs as not an escape, but relating them, and your feelings (/keen observations/truths) as part of the same world somehow. And then the Pavement jam that's most fun to floor the volume to.

  11:22am Brendan:

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The northeastern Minnesota town of Gilbert is alerting residents that birds may be a bit more “tipsy” than normal this time of year.Police say the reason behind this is the fact that certain berries in the area have fermented earlier than usual due to an early frost. That, plus the fact that many birds have yet to migrate south, means more birds are feeling the effects than in past years.

Also, younger birds’ livers cannot handle the fermented berries as well as older birds.
Police say there’s no need to call law enforcement about the birds, as they should sober up in a short period of time.
Avatar 11:24am Trouble:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Rich in Washington:

I once got a haircut so bad, then went and visited my wife at work, and she did this comic horror-take - jumped straight into the air upon seeing me. She then immediately sent me across the street to a haircut store, where I met the stylist who would cut my hair for the next five years or so.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am melinda:

@Rich that's hilarious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Barney Grubbs:

one winter (maybe early spring?) when I lived in NH, I heard what I thought was ice hitting our front window and went out to look. There was a whole flock of wasted waxwings falling out of tree branches, flying into windows, and raising a ruckus. It looked like they were going from yard to yard snarfing up fermented hawthorn berries, etc., and leaving behind some colorful streels of droppings. It was both glorious and alarming.
