  7:04pm queems:

i’m working on my art show thing right now
Avatar 7:08pm wolfg:

burlesque does certainly not mean "artistic stripping"
  7:09pm Emily:

@wolfg I learned that from these amazing performers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm ultradamno:

I define it as big handheld fans and comically oversized martini glasses
  7:09pm Emily:

@ultra wardens!! I love it.
  7:10pm Kate:

Look! SuicideGirls: Blackheart Burlesque is at Fletcher Opera Theater
in backwoods Raleigh, North Carolina. It's a movement.
Avatar 7:11pm kimzilla:

@Ultradamno, Hmm, if you are the Lifers, we would be the Wardens, wait, but I don't want to be a warden, maybe we're just the ones that got out...

Avatar 7:12pm dale:

don't know how i feel about burlesque being 'empowering.' but if the interviewee is happy....
Avatar 7:12pm wolfg:

that's a rather new meaning of that word, the word already existed in the 17th century ... and then denoted a certain kind of theatre
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm ultradamno:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm melinda:

Hi all!
Avatar 7:13pm kimzilla:

Hmm, Parolees, na, we'll have to think about that. PS, this girls interview is so sad.
Avatar 7:13pm wolfg:

cabaret, comedy etc. circus maybe a bit vulgar, but not in the sense of modern strip performances
Avatar 7:14pm dale:

emily and kim - you should have gone undercover as burlesque dancers with hidden mics for this show.

20 years too late

  7:18pm Emily:

@dale I am way not smooth enough for that! They would find me out immediately!
  7:18pm Emily:

She’s so creative—and so gleefully unexpected! She’s so much fun to watch.
Avatar 7:20pm kimzilla:

I am the complete opposite of what it would take to be a burlesque performer. I would end up having the least sexy persona ever. Wait, there is food involved? I can do that. (not in a sexy way)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm ultradamno:

Velvet Hammer! That's the neo-burlesque thing I was trying to remember for the last ten minutes. Was driving me crazy.
Avatar 7:20pm Jeff Moore:

I love her initial question, pointing to the stage:

"How do I get to be one of THAT?"
Avatar 7:21pm wolfg:

wikipedia says this new meaning of the word exists since like the 1990s
Avatar 7:22pm dale:

that would be a great act - the non-sexy burlesque schtick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm melinda:

Behind the Burly Q is a good documentary about burlesque. It also features Alan Alda, whose father was a burlesque performer! Little Alan would hang out at shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm ultradamno:

This person thinks it's worse than stripping: www.spectator.co.uk...
  7:23pm Kate:

@dale like the madeline kahn blazing saddles version of burlesque
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Ken From Hyde Park:

My knowledge of this subject is what I learned in the "Bart After Dark" Simpsons episode. He got a job at the Maison Derrière.
Avatar 7:25pm wolfg:

that would be more like traditional burlesque
  7:25pm Marc15:

I love the “No Rain” video
Avatar 7:25pm wolfg:

or just vulgar and ugly
Avatar 7:27pm kimzilla:

Here is Rita's website- ritanwink.com
Avatar 7:27pm wolfg:

maybe, now it is a way of reacting to body politics
Avatar 7:28pm kimzilla:

@Melinda, wait...Alan Alda's father??
Avatar 7:28pm wolfg:

i a bit of an autonomous way so to speak

“No Rain” By Blind Mellon

All I can say
Is that my life is pretty plain
I like watchin' the puddles gather rain
And all I can do
Is just pour some tea for two
And speak my point of view
But it's not sane,
It's not sane

I just want some one to say to me,
"I'll always be there when you wake."
You know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today
So stay with me and I'll have it made

And I don't understand why I sleep all day
And I start to complain
That there's no rain
And all I can do is read a book to stay awake
And it rips my life away,
But it's a great escape
Escape... escape... escape...

All I can say
Is that my life is pretty plain
You don't like my point of view
You think that I'm insane
It's not sane... it's not sane.

I just want some one to say to me,
"I'll always be there when you wake."
You know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today
So stay with me and I'll have it made

And I'll have it made
And I'll have it made
And I'll have it made oh no no no
You know I'm really gonna
Really gonna
Have it made
And I'll have it made
Ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah

@emily, i know...i'm one of those.
  7:32pm Hypertoast:

I love Burlesque.. I appreciate the artistic control the performers have. They're in charge of the tone(I saw a strip tease from someone dressed as Tina Belcher) and it seems to take the stigma out of the sexuality. Plus I love that they embrace the vaudeville style comedy the hosts seem to regularly embrace.
Avatar 7:32pm dale:

robert alda was burlesque or vaudeville?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm ultradamno:

Khan's bit in Blazing Saddles was like a Marlene Dietrich can-can, great stuff.
  7:33pm Marc15:

I jcan’t believe that the song is 25 years old
Avatar 7:33pm wolfg:

yea I guess I have seen sth like that in Berlin ... I got to know the performer, and she was just an awful person
  7:34pm Kate:

@dale nooooooooooooooooooo. . . could be a Netflix night! Or you can just find the MK youtube video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uai7M4RpoLU
  7:34pm Emily:

@Hypertoast did you know the Tina Belcher performer is the same as the MC who did the captain america song???
  7:35pm Hypertoast:

@Emily, I just found that out the other day! Mind blown! She's so good
Avatar 7:35pm kimzilla:

@Hypertoast, totally. I do feel like this is so empowering, and creative. I am in such awe over their MOXIE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm melinda:

@Kimzilla yes, Robert Alda was an actor who started out as a burlesque comedian and singer. I saw him and his younger son Antony in a local theater production when I was young and got their autographs!
Avatar 7:36pm dale:

shouldn't her name be rita m. weep?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm melinda:

@dale apparently he did burlesque shows. I'll have to google further though.
  7:38pm Kate:

teasing is a lost art
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm melinda:

@ultradamno that was an interesting take, the Spectator article.
Avatar 7:39pm dale:

wiki - "He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York in 1930. He began as a singer and dancer in vaudeville after winning a talent contest, and moved on to burlesque.[2]"
  7:39pm Kate:

@ dale bahahahahah!
Avatar 7:40pm wolfg:

I guess that was coined in the US like that ... they took a word which didn't make sense to them and used just used it
  7:41pm Hypertoast:

@Kimzilla, right? And I feel that anyone that may be more prudish about this stuff should go see a burlesque act. People that don't take themselves too seriously(my kind of people) have a way of breaking down those walls and reminding us about the fun of it all
Avatar 7:41pm wolfg:

how are u going to translate the Italian or German Burlesque now?
Avatar 7:42pm wolfg:

its an Italian word after all
  7:45pm henry:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm DC:

A quality broadcast, and enjoyable listen. Sincerely and Rita 'n Wink were great to hear from, good interviews. If Bobby Fishnets is a Bobby Fischer chess reference then he's made my day

  7:49pm dez:

all 3 are great bands!
  7:50pm Theo:

I recommend Dream Boys in Bangkok Thailand...Best boy burlesque/show/theater ever!!!
  7:51pm Kate:

I think my name would be loaded potato and my prop would be cheese sauce. That's probably sick and wrong, but there ya go
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm melinda:

Avatar 7:52pm dale:
