A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Dave in Vermont:

A friend of mine mentioned turkey vultures a few months ago too Sem.
Avatar 10:03am Sem:

@Dave: more dead things for them to eat? The crows and seagulls, and the bald eagles, will have more competition for the road kill, but perhaps the vultures are feeding on something else? Hard to figure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Webhamster Henry:

I have no problem with party members only voting for their party's candidates in primaries. I do have problems with the existence of parties, though, and the whole process of vetting and finding candidates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Dave in Vermont:

I saw a bald eagle sort of up close (50-70 yards?) for the first time in my life this summer-it was thrilling
  10:08am kev:

we have turkey vultures here they usually feast on placenta at the dairy farm. had an Oriole last 2years but have not seen them this season
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am jmr3:

@steveo: I've understood the words and meanings from covers so many times. When I heard Warren Haynes sing "She Said, She Said' it was as if I'd never heard the words before, even though I could sing the whole thing.
Avatar 10:09am northguineahills:

Avatar 10:09am Sem:

Brier island is a major flyway for Nortjh American migratory birds, the vultures appeared there first ~ 2012-13. Since then they have spread all over Nova Scotia.

There is a maple at the foot of the property, on the estuary, from which a pair of bald eagles hunt all winter. Awesome does not come close to describing the spectatcle.
Avatar 10:10am βrian:

I saw a bald eagle right in downtown Madison a few winters back. Flying at about 60 feet against a clear blue sky.
  10:10am JakeGould:

@WebhamsterHenry: Primaries and conventions for political parties used to be real debate and discussion forums, not some foregone conclusion retreat. The 1970s up until the 1980s I believe it was still like that. Nowadays it’s somewhat of a joke. But Justice Democrats? Yes please. Even the flawed ones… But I say that being in a weird district in NYC where my alternative Democratic candidate is really a complete idiot.

And for Ike who will read this, I am not in the Barkan/Gounardes district. Those are the people literally across the street from me. And I believe either one of those guys defeating Marty Golden would be a great thing for Bay Ridge and the rest of Brooklyn because Bay Ridge going 100% Democrat would change A LOT in this city.
  10:11am Emilsagroforest:

@sem and @dave this year we noticed Downy woodpeckers eating Mullein seeds off the stalks.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Phillippe Bastille:

we had a nest of red tailed hawks in our backyard. One has stuck around. Our mouse and snake problems are no longer an issue
  10:12am JakeGould:

Oh, and FYI the main reason there is even a Middle Eastern enclave in Bay Ridge has nothing to do with the Republican district. My neighborhood is the “weird” Democratic slice near the Gowanus Expressway (Exit 20). Near where those goats were found grazing the train tracks.

Avatar 10:15am Trouble:

@emilsagroforest: wow! good for you! congrats! my youngster is 6'1" and applying to colleges, sigh
  10:15am JakeGould:

Anyway in more important news, there is a shy black cat kitten that curls itself up in front of my building right near a very specific basement window. Anyway, it didn’t die because of the heat despite only trusting us at a yard’s distance. Otherwise, it’s a nice cat that likes people more than other strays but is still weirded out by humans.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Dave in Vermont:

Emilsagroforest I was going to mention that last year I saw finches and tiny woodpeckers (Downy?) feeding on mullein stalks in our yard- it was cool. I haven't noticed this year. THey would come at different times like maybe a half hour apart. They each eat different things out of the stalk, one seeds and one insects. That was one of my highlights last summer.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am melinda:

@Brian what's up with Beloit? All I know is there's a college there of the same name.
  10:22am Emilsagroforest:

@dave We always leave the mulleins when they come up because we like the way they look, the bees dig them, and they’re nice toilet paper. This recent phenomenon with the downys made us like them even more.

@Jake, oh you're in the ultra-bizarrely-gerrymandered Diane Savino vs. Jasmine R. district? I know JR is pretty unprofessional but Savino is really corrupt. No Republican ever runs against her (as part of her IDC deal) even though it's largely a Staten Island district! I'd say protest vote for JR if you're not leaving it blank.

  10:55am JakeGould:

@ike: You’re kinda naive. You see, the crazy gerrymandered district I am in is just a shadow of what it neighbors. So if Simcha Felder falls on your side and then Marty Golden falls on my side, then the district I am in just will change because of that overwhelming non-Republican aligned sandwich. When I saw the ballot and realized it was Diane Savino, I shrugged and went with her because at the end of the day my specific slice of deep Brooklyn hell can only fall apart if Savino is not there and a competent replacement isn’t in the wings.

It all sucks, but I could wax on for hours how the liberal deep parts of Brooklyn morphed into this conservative B.S. but all I will say is: Yes, I agree Ike. But it’s not as simple in this part of Brooklyn as you think.

But went with Nixon and Williams otherwise.

I love that we have a place we can hear "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" and "This Is How We Do It" inside of ten minutes.

MEUTE is pronounced more like "moy-teh", moy as in moyel, te as in tetanus. it means pack (..of dogs/wolves)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am coelacanth∅:

oh my computer has no problem playing bohemian rhapsody on trombones, which i'm okay never hearing, even though i like trombones...
how do i make this thing play html5? anyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am coelacanth∅:

Avatar 11:13am northguineahills:

Yeah, I dug that montell jordan as well!
Avatar 11:13am Sem:

@Dave: the Annapolis Valley is filled w/ small farms. PEI is one gigantic farm, small, acreages w/buildings are hot properties these days. As a Farmers' Market guy I can tell you that organic growers must work very very hard to find a place in a crowded market place, but what's new in that, same anywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Dave in Vermont:

the view on the cam is being remotely changed
Avatar 11:18am Trouble:

merci @adampsyche

Avatar 11:23am Sem:

Vendor. My little company represents the first craft distiller to get into the business after the Glenora guys, Cape Breton single malt whisky makers, who got started in 1989. Twenty years after,
Avatar 11:23am Trouble:

thanks @ngh.
Avatar 11:23am northguineahills:

@coel: Chrome is worse then MS Edge, but I use it for work.

@Sem: “Market Farmer” is one of my substitute swears for “M.F.” Another one is “Mother Otter” which I sometimes pair up with “Snot Sucker”: “You mother otter snot sucker, get off my plane!”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Passaic River Blues:

@SugarPlumFairyWolf: did not know that and that is awesome. Add him to the list with Cleanthony Early and the rapper Cage.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am coelacanth∅:

it's sunny out and that may only last a few minutes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am The Oscar:

@JakeGould The Criterion edition of Repo Man includes the full TV edit, for which Alex Cox reshot scenes with characters saying things like "Flip you, melon farmer!"

@coel: how about some grappa instead?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Dave in Vermont:

@sem what, no puttering?
Avatar 11:42am Sem:

I'm more of the distillery's presence at Markets, pouring samples, explaining what grappa is, why we age our rum in bourbon barrels, why we make apple vodka, and such.
Avatar 11:44am βrian:

Where do you get your material to make grappa up there?

I can't even look at grappa without getting a headache.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Dave in Vermont:

I worked at an orchard the last few years, and December was the first release of an amazing apple brandy that has been aging for seven years

@βrian: we make a very nice apple brandy, aged three years in the wood.
The grappa makin's come from the vineyards here in the Valley. There is a L'Acadie Blanc grape which makes a very tasty grappa.

Thanks for hosting this soiree, Trouble.

@Dave Awesome! ;)
