This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm chresti:

How goes by you?
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Listener James! Yes, man!
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

this track i heard while watching the show, and got so excited

"That's Tropical Forest, by Paul Bonneau! I know this theme in my blood!"
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

used every time he chops down a tree and builds a raft so far
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm chresti:

I could listen to the Bonneau track all day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Scraps:

h’lo hey
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

oh me too, Chresti, what a classic
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

Hi Scraps!
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

ah, now we have themes from what is probably my favorite TV show of all time
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

Columbo = the only good cop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm listener james from westwood:

Ahh, I had a feeling we'd switched to US television. Just had that sound, that sunset-in-LA warmth.
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

exactly, yeah
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Scraps:

I’m listening on my ipad. Explorers Room is tiny tiny font! And eventually I think the conversation goes below what I can read (literally below)
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

sorry about the font, there have been complaints in the past
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Scraps:

I love that Mantler album
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

can't help with the ipad cutting off the bottom though
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

me too, great Beckett thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm listener james from westwood:

People ask me about the alignment system in Dungeons & Dragons, and Columbo is always the example I give when I describe the alignment of lawful good.
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

one of my favorite episodes is when he really proves it and takes down his own chief of police
Avatar 7:19pm northguineahills:

Digging... (trying to finish work before dark).
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

hi NGH! rooting for you
Avatar 7:21pm northguineahills:

Hadn't heard that Michael Mantler, Love this Dick Hyman.....
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

Hyman is so great, esp. in this period
Avatar 7:22pm hyde:

hi
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde!
Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

I love that this and his first "MOOG" record came out on Command, what a perfect label to straddle this line of stereo-dynamic bourgeois den music and true avant-garde
Avatar 7:26pm hyde:

soory i missed the Columbo tunes. Murder By the Book is one of my faves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...ELP on the horizon...
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

ah, then I'm sorry too! some of the best music in the series on that ep
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

Hi Rev Rab
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Rich in Washington:

this is a groovy show.
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

Hi Rich!
Avatar 7:28pm hyde:

i have probly said this before, but my favorite Columbo episode is Etude in Black
Avatar 7:29pm northguineahills:

last Hyman pre-clickied, wait that came out wrong..... so did that....
Avatar 7:31pm hyde:

oh crap, you had never watched the Prisoner???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Woh! There's only ~17 episodes Prisoner...
Avatar 7:31pm hyde:

i envy you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...oh true...get to see it 1st time...I saw it - I dunno - JuniorHigh for me or so - great age...when PBS was rilly bitchen...
Avatar 7:35pm northguineahills:

I think the Simpsons is the only show that I know any episode titles (amanda helped as well)
Avatar 7:36pm northguineahills:

Will look on amazon prime for the prisoner (I get it free via my wife's office)
Avatar 7:36pm hyde:

Now You See Him is that Cassidy episode. I love that one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Rich in Washington:

Sounds like someone doing Shockabilly doing Count Five.
Avatar 7:41pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: Etude in Black for me too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Some backlash against Prisoner cause so many called it the Best Show Ever...maybe that's TwilightZone - but damn - Prisoner...
Oh Nuggets & Garage - yer pressin' my buttons...was just thinking about PrettyThings being betwixt Stones & Who sorta - whilst also being the nearest analog to US Garage in the UK, in some ways...& Count5 were doing yARdbiRds anyhow!...sounds like Seeds to me...
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

yes, envy me. it is such a pleasure to see the prisoner for the first time, i can't believe it
Avatar 7:43pm hyde:

@Flash did you watch all of the Prisoner?
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

no not yet! no spoilers!
  7:43pm Doug Schulkind:

Blessed greetings, Heavy Ev!
Avatar 7:44pm hyde:

@Flash haha, i won't spoil anything. it's just real good.
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

I'm about halfway
Avatar 7:44pm hyde:

@Doug yay, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Have you seen JamesCoburn's 'President'sAnalyst' movie?
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

Hi Chuggin' Doug!
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

I love Coburn but no, should I have?
Avatar 7:45pm hyde:

@Flash i watched it first as a teen when it played on PBS (i think) and my brother and i would watch it late night on like a 12" black and white and it blew my little mind
Avatar 7:46pm northguineahills:

Q65, new to me!
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

intensely abstract compared to Q65's rep for snarling short form punk
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: they have 2 of the best cuts on Nuggets 2, and are in general absolute legends of european garage
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...cause it makes an interesting Compare/Contrast to the Prisoner's Last Episode...so watch that after! GREAT film...
Yeah - Rhino blew it putting Global Garage in NuggetsII w/ the British stuff...needs its' own dang Box !! Program from NewZealand called 'Retrospect 60s Garage Punk' has GlobalGarage as a regular feature...I dunno how he finds it!!
Avatar 7:49pm hyde:

@RevRab huh, never seen that. Lalo Schifrin score and and hippie band led by Barry McGuire? count me in
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

LOVE NuggetsII but have always felt the same way, Rev
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The best freakin' film.
Avatar 7:50pm Franco Twinkie:

I love the Seeds from this period. Sky wore white loafers.
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

Seeds barely even have two tricks up their sleeve but they don't get enough credit for making that limitation surprisingly versatile
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

Hi Franco! Sky Saxon is so cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'm fascinated by the whole L.A. thing. The Seeds bear some relation to thedoors - Love - IronButterfly...it's a thing...
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

totally
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& TheSeeds made great rekkids...
Avatar 7:54pm hyde:

dang, i havent listened to The Creation in a looooong time
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

Creation is so pop art but that guttural guitar sound really sells it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- bow to gittar before Page...TheWho meant so much over there...
Avatar 7:55pm Franco Twinkie:

Out Of The Question is a personal favorite from this album. Who cares if they were as limited as a band from junior high?
  7:55pm chresti:

Wow! This is a nice intro
  7:56pm chresti:

I enjoyed Leathercoated minds
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Great rekkids! Sometimes I wonder why I like Garage & Punk so much when there's so little there in Form - but so is the Blues a simple Form...Here's the thing: if you play something 'Simple' - you really have to Bring It to make it work...Try it!
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

Completely agree, Franco. I listen to their LPs with total awe. 9,000 People Daily Making Love is one of the best unheralded psych long jams of the era/region in my opinion
Avatar 7:57pm hyde:

i admit i have never heard this Terje Rypdal. all i know is those 70's ECM lps, which are sometimes ok
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

exactly, RevRabbi
  7:57pm chresti:

Love the guitar on this
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

they have their moments, but there's some pure TNT on early Terje records. Min Bul is out of this world
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

oh me too, Chresti!
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

i'll have to do a Terje / Garbarek set sometime
Avatar 7:59pm Franco Twinkie:

Flash, have you heard the new West Coast Nuggets? It's on clear vinyl with a 3-d cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Very 'BlackMagicWoman' ovsly...I only know his name from like one 'Jazz' track!
  7:59pm chresti:

The troggs were also kind of limited-loved them anyway
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

@Franco: oh dang, no I have not!
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

The Troggs are fuckin GREAT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm melinda:

hi friends! Flute, yes!
Avatar 8:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Well, mister, hustle your fanny down to the head shop and slip a copy under your paisley poncho.
  8:02pm chresti:

Hi Melinda !
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar 8:02pm Franco Twinkie:

Melinda!
Avatar 8:03pm hyde:

hi melinda
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

i think my favorite Troggs is From Home

or maybe that one that the Fall sort of sampled, from the 1st album, can't remember the name. that one is HEAVY
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

i think you must be right Franco. I do need to do that
  8:04pm zonk ludlow:

Hiya Flash & all explorers.
  8:04pm chresti:

Pink Floyd sounding vocal
Avatar 8:05pm northguineahills:

I'm out Evan. Thanks again!
Avatar 8:05pm northguineahills:

(still can see daylight in the western sky)
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

vaya con dios NGH!
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

Hi Zonk!
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

this is one of the most mythic garage LPs, i think only 100 copies and so primitive it becomes absolute avant garde
Avatar 8:07pm Franco Twinkie:

Mark E was a great promoter of obscure psych/garage. Mr. Pharmasist? - The Other Half! A wonder in checkered slacks!
  8:07pm chresti:

Deadman’s Tale seemed contemporary, sound-wise
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

cover of that Index record, adding to the mythic weirdness of it all: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:10pm hyde:

this is great. i feel like i'm listening to Rex's show
Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

well, that's a good show
Avatar 8:12pm Flash Strap:

this one: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 8:13pm Franco Twinkie:

Chresti and I were on Haight Street a couple of weeks ago, and despite the carnival midway vibe all the record stores are a great source of all things thrashy and trippy. They take their legacy seriously up there.
Avatar 8:13pm hyde:

i'm reading about Etude in Black. Fun fact: Blythe Danner was five months pregnant with Gwyneth Paltrow when it was shot.
  8:13pm chresti:

Retina burning light here ngh (still)
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

I need to hit the spots sometime! never been there
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: this I knew, i'm obsessed with that episode
Avatar 8:16pm hyde:

@Flash me too
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

that scene where he badgers Cassavettes about how much his house costs, and costs to keep up is so incredible. Columbo's class-hero elements are rarely so crystal clear as in that scene

and the dynamic between them is electric, unbelievably fresh
Avatar 8:18pm Franco Twinkie:

Amoeba, Rasputin. Black Pancake, The Groove Merchant, Rookie Recardo, Grooves. ect, ect. Book yourself a ticket on Trans Love Airlines....It will be worth it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm melinda:

I need to start watching Colombo again.
  8:22pm chresti:

Like that “cha cha cha “
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

The best detectives imo are NOT cops (like Marlowe, the best). It's crucial that they be outside the formal law. Columbo is the exception – he subverts the system's biases and uses it to bring down exclusively the powerful.

He's the only good cop detective if you ask me
  8:23pm chresti:

Downliners sect was almost punk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm melinda:

The first time I heard this Chiffons I remember being struck by its trippyness.
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

yeah, really trippy for them!
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

Q65 has great singles sleeves: img.discogs.com...

  8:28pm chresti:

I never heard q65 before
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

Little Danny played one of their best tracks last week, I Got Nightmares, or I'd play that one too
Avatar 8:30pm Franco Twinkie:

Naked dancing and hitting things with a stick!
Avatar 8:30pm Flash Strap:

yes!
  8:33pm chresti:

You’d think I’d remember that
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

such a gnarly sound, Slim Harpo is incredible
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

well, LD plays a too much great stuff to recall it all!
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

it would be impossible!
  8:35pm chresti:

Ah see! I’ll have a gander, thanks flash!
Avatar 8:35pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh Yes! Last month at the flea market I found a copy of Scratch My Back on Excello in the three for a dollar pile! Miracles happen every day.
  8:38pm chresti:

No sheet? when it cools off, I’ll go have a listen, Franco!
Avatar 8:38pm hyde:

@Franco wow
Avatar 8:40pm Franco Twinkie:

I think Brenton Wood and The Count five were both on Double Shot. At least in my drug addled memory they are. Maybe both records are yellow...I'll shut up now.
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

damn man that was a great find
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

been really getting back into Faust recently, wondering why we ever parted
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

lotta numbers tonight

Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

@hyde: yeah that whole LP is killer
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

great cover too
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

my incredible pleasure, JJ
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

i don't think Lou Christie wrote either of the Tammys numbers tonight
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

if your first name is Regional, you are a cool guy, guaranteed
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

never seen this flick, myself
Avatar 9:11pm hyde:

@Flash not a great movie, but fun. Shelly Winters! Richard Pryor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm chresti:

This has been a blast to the max flash!
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

plus one of the better late Baxter soundtrack efforts, i really gotta see it
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

extremely pleased to hear that Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm chresti:

psycho killer like
Avatar 9:22pm Flash Strap:

this demo recording is so much better than the release
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm chresti:

Yikes!
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

she kind of gets it to a gospel place, the way it has no set ending and just builds emotionally
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

another version of And I Love Her, to follow up on last week's
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm melinda:

So bummed that I couldn't see Faust last month, their first Maine appearance.
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

wow that would have been amazing
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

I know their current incarnation is really different, but I've liked everything I've heard. It's been a while, but Ravvivando was wild
