Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Oh, flaming baton to UM was a metaphor, so we're not wickermanning UM (don't have time to put it together)*looks at gif*, or are we????
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Jeff Golick:

This is the best one.
Avatar 12:05pm burke:

Hatfields vs. McCoys! The song somewhat grudgingly admits that stuff.
  12:06pm Dean:

What are the "My Hometown" singers going to do when they get to these?

"Los Ranchos de Albuquerque! Los Ranchos de Albuquerque! That's my hometown!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Uncle Michael:

James! Dan! Doug! Lane! NGH! Jeff! Burke! Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Goyim in the AM:

HO has kind of a Low thing going on here (which is a good thing in my book).

I'm not making this up. I'm sitting at the corner of some highway and "SE Tater Peeler Rd."

Coel! Me too.

I love how goddamn beautiful this song is.....
  12:11pm Estanley:

Hello Uncle and cousins. Greetings from Lisbon, my home for the next week.
  12:12pm dan:

The first song sounded like Down By The River. I see there's a bit of a thread here.
  12:13pm Dean:

Tennessee, @Lane?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 12:14pm burke:

I think this is even better than the Meters' version.
  12:14pm rw:

Good morning! Lane, the question is, what are you doing at the corner of Tater Peeler Rd.?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Lane Gray:

Yup. Best way to go from Greensboro NC to KCMO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

So is this the corner of Tater and Peeler...or Tater Peeler and something Else?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Goyim in the AM:

Buddy's vocals aren't strong, but oh man, the feel of this record...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm Lane Gray:

Tater Peeler was the cross street to the highway the truck stop was on. I was waiting for the lights to change
Avatar 12:19pm burke:

Yawpers not to be confused with Youpers -- inhabitants of Michigan's upper peninsula.

I'm going to predict that the next song is going to be Dead Flowers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Uncle Michael:

Or the set break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Lane Gray:

If so, I hope it's NRPS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Uncle Michael:

Can't abide Marmaduke, Lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Artie:

Chilton's 'Free Again' wouldn't be too bad.
  12:29pm dan:

Or Juke Box Gypsy by Lindisfarne.
  12:29pm rw:

Lane, I was going to say, if you had any taters on you...

Dean, that's weird because I could use a left-handed bacon stretcher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Lane Gray:

Betty cage trumps Marmaduke
  12:30pm rw:

For all this left handed bacon, I mean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Lane Gray:

Buddy. Stupid Google speech has cloth ears
  12:31pm Dean:

How have I gone this long -- closing in on 60 years -- without acquiring a NRPS record? This must change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Lane Gray:

No offense to Jerry Garcia, but they got a whole lot better once buddy cage joins the band
  12:35pm Dean:

Mmmm, southpaw pigs!
Avatar 12:35pm coelacanth∅:

Billy Ward, later of black sabbath, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Lane Gray:

Even in the 50s, the b-sides were often better
Avatar 12:41pm northguineahills:

I won this album in the marathon, I love it!

I am so, so happy there's a place where I can just turn on the radio and hear the Legendary Stardust Cowboy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Goyim in the AM:

Interesting fact: Kevin Shea of Talibam! has pet my cat; that same cat is frightened by the music of the Legendary Stardust Cowboy

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Pedro in Arlington:

  1:03pm dan:

Great cover of Ode To Billy Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm listener james from westwood:

Funky Fanfare–ish!
  1:05pm Dean:

I think it's skee-ah-VOH-nay, which sounds like an insult.
  1:06pm Dean:

"Ten-inch shellac" also sounds like an insult. Or maybe I'm just sensitive this morning.
  1:06pm rw:

I think I saw that Gig Talk is off the new schedule. Not a show I would think I would like but those guys are pretty good at quick-witted banter.
  1:07pm Dean:

"Spatchcock"--the hits just keep on coming.
  1:08pm Rich in Washington:

I'm making my signature hash brown potatoes as I'm listening to this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Hugo:

Should it be "Skal vi knulla?" Makes sense in Swedish. I'm not saying what it means, though. Rather naughty ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Lane Gray:

The proper Italian is skya-VOH-ne (curses to SwiftKey for not having a schwa key)
  1:09pm rw:

Rich, what's your secret?? I only have luck using the frozen stuff.
  1:10pm Dean:

I have good luck with v-e-r-y slowly pan-frying unpeeled Russet potato cubes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Uncle Michael:

Pedro! Rich! Hugo!

Spill it, Hugo.
  1:11pm Dean:

Never heard Edwards Hand before. Has a Strawbs thing going on.
  1:11pm Dean:

Or vice versa.
  1:11pm dan:

Neither have I. Sounds great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm The Oscar:

Most underappreciated Stones song ever?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Pedro in Arlington:

I once saw a reel-to-reel copy of Satanic Majesties - complete with intact 3-D cover - sitting on the seat of a parked car. I did not steal it.
  1:13pm Rich in Washington:

I sort of rinse the heck out of the potatoes after dicing and cook them in salted water until they're almost to a boil, then strain and throw them in a hot skillet where the olive oil is just about smoking. then fry them, tossing them until they're consistently browned.
Avatar 1:16pm coelacanth∅:

how did this happen?
  1:17pm Dean:

This Brothers Four reminds me of a record I discovered yesterday, After Hours by The King's Men, a male vocal group at Cambridge. They do an a cappella version of Oasis' "Wonderwall." I mean, wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm joe:

This Judy Collins is giving me the warm fuzzys
Avatar 1:18pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Good morning!
Avatar 1:18pm coelacanth∅:

dandelion was a substantial hit for the 'stones. i think a few of the songs on "between the buttons" are their most underappreciated songs (their most underappreciated album, i think)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 1:18pm northguineahills:

Didn't know Judy covered this....
Avatar 1:18pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Judy Collins' voice is one of my favorites. Thanks.
  1:19pm rw:

Thank you Rich! I'm going to try that out this weekend.
Avatar 1:20pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

coelacanthe I remember Dandelion and like it, and agree about Between the Buttons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Lane Gray:

I now want to hear Judy sing Pretty Polly
Avatar 1:21pm burke:

I spent one day in Portugal and picked up a little rooster-shaped tchotchke and gave it to my mother. Tourists to that country probably know what I'm talking about. This is the extent of my Portuguese chicken experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm joe:

Clicking on so many stars
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

Portuguese Chicken Experience, out now on Decca. Ask your local stockist.
Avatar 1:25pm coelacanth∅:

Lizzie i love that album! one of my top 5, and i like every 'stones album through goats head soup.
Avatar 1:27pm coelacanth∅:

and Pedro (@1.13) that's amazing!
...so - why didn't you steal it?
  1:28pm Marie:

Great show! Loving this Black Moth...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm joe:

o frango funky
  1:34pm dan:

You should do an all Beatles cover show.
  1:35pm Marie:

I just want to say that I think the Stones are overrated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Uncle Michael:

Almost anything yuge is.
Avatar 1:41pm coelacanth∅:

i think the transition (upheaval?) is what prodded their creativity.
once Brian Jones accepted thathis little blues outfit was no longer his, and no longer a blues outfit, he explored a lot of new ideas. then Mick Taylor, being a more sophisticated musician than the others, added a spark right when they might've lost theirs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Lane Gray:

Marie, I'll agree with you mostly.
But what they were saying (in the musical sense of the word) managed to say the right things at the right time
Were others saying similar things but better? Yes, but they didn't have the distribution, or the name recognition
Others were better but they were pretty cool. (and I really dug both Keith's selections and what he had to say when he was on Desert Island Discs a couple of years ago)
Avatar 1:43pm northguineahills:

Needed this. Software and brain both glitching today....
Avatar 1:44pm coelacanth∅:

gotta hit the road
Thanks UM! enlightening as ever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

See ya, Coel! Thanks for comin' 'round.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Jeff Golick:

Carla Bley is someone I feel I should know better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

Carla Bley is someone I'd have assumed I could have you school me on.
Avatar 1:50pm northguineahills:

Feeling Neuish!
  1:51pm Dean:

Is this from a box set of Neu! material, or is it on last year's (maybe 2016's) Brain box?
  1:51pm Dean:

We've been talking a lot about Carla Bley since Sunday.
  1:52pm Marie:

To LG & C: I definitely don't know their work as well as you guys. I have heard mostly their hits and a smattering of their early stuff. I think they have cultivated a great "rock and roll" image
Avatar 1:52pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

coelacanhe I hope I still have my copy of Their Satanic Majesties but I might have sold it when I was a starving studen. sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Uncle Michael:

2010 box, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Uncle Michael:

Who's we, Dean?
  1:56pm Dean:

Jeff G., me, other commenters on Jeff's show perhaps, and Irwin, who played Bley this week, "Birds of Paradise" from Big Band Theory
  1:57pm Dean:

Wow, that's a heckuva box.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm joe:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Dan.

I go to the cinema once a year. I'm staying home this weekend. Been ill, and friends have given me homeopathic treatments on top of my pharmaceuticals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Uncle Michael:

I hope you get to feeling a lot better.
  2:09pm dan:

The last film I saw in the theater was Dunkirk last summer. I used to go so many times a year, but everything out these days is the same crap.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm The Oscar:

I just recently got official press credentials to two of our local indie cinemas, so I've actually managed to see a lot more lately. Don't have any immediate plans this weekend, but caught a Blade Runner double feature last weekend.
Avatar 2:14pm Little Danny:

howdy UM, howdy all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Uncle Michael:

which cut of the first film, Oscar?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm The Oscar:

Final, which I think is one of the better "reedits" in recent years-- most of the changes are just fixes of production/continuity errors.
  2:20pm dan:

@The Oscar

I saw Blade Runner recently. I thought it was good, but not great like everyone says.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

I think it's great. I don't think it's gotten dated by subsequent sci-fi production values...which is remarkable. I think The Final Cut is the right cut.
Avatar 2:24pm ndbob:

afternoon UM and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25pm joe:

On sort of a related note If anyone is interested I saw the release of 2001 yesterday. Was a treat.

  2:44pm Dean:

Make that "was having a donut."
  2:44pm Dean:

Cream-filled conniption?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm The Oscar:

I agree, UM-- seeing it again on the big screen, I was astonished at how well it holds up. It was my first time seeing 2049, which I thought was a mixed bag, but probably the most interesting Blade Runner revival we were likely to get. Glad I saw it on the big screen though-- it is gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Uncle Michael:

No, the conniptionary was all out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Uncle Michael:

2049 was a disappointment to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Goyim in the AM:

See, I expected 2049 to be awful, and was thus pleasantly surprised. Jared Leto stinks in everything, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm 23 Wolves:
