all honor to those folks who preserve this great music
Avatar 6:12pm northguineahills:

I love collecting Bulgarian chorale music, and Georgian chorale music, and,... who am I kidding, I like collecting all music.
Avatar 6:13pm northguineahills:

The bee was a powerful symbol for the pre-christian Baltic tribes....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Michael 98145:

and oprah
Avatar 6:15pm northguineahills:

Michael, doing the universe's work...
Avatar 6:33pm northguineahills:

When I first heard Bulgarian folk music from the Folkways record, I was blown away, I had never heard anything like it before....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Michael 98145:

i went thru a couple copies of that old Nonesuch disc.
and (like i really need more music) just ordered the BSH disc from CD Baby.
Avatar 6:39pm northguineahills:

Skopje, Macedonia is 240 km from Sofia, Bulgaria.

Hey, that was the record I was referencing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Michael 98145:

love this :) not just i'm part proudly slavic
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Michael 98145:

^ because
Avatar 6:45pm northguineahills:

Well, the Bulgars did become culturally Slavs over the millenia.

I'm as wasp as they come (w/o the blue blood, unfortunately), and of course I heart this!
Avatar 6:47pm Bas NL:

Hi Dan & Corrina! I'm really enjoying this! Corrina, sorry if you already covered this, but are you planning to release all these recordings and backgrounds?
Avatar 6:53pm northguineahills:

(My undergrad thesis was on history in the Balkans [the history BA at least])
Avatar 6:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...oh man - what I been missing...where West meets East - fascinating & beautiful...
Avatar 6:57pm northguineahills:

I need to leave work to do laundry before the laundromat closes, but, I love this so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Richard S:

Oh man, I missed an hour! Thank goodness for Archives!
Avatar 7:03pm Rocky Horror:

I'm off for the night soyou all tomorrow with Wake n Bake
Avatar 7:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I muse that every truly distinct Culture has a different Imago Mundi (Model of the World) - correlating to a distinct Metaphysics
- relating to a specific approach to Musical Scales / Intervals;
...this being where East meets West - I think it makes a very interesting example (the 'West' is said to roots in Greece for instance...but how much are we really the same??)
...& - I always go for old traditional tribal village ritual community stuff...
Avatar 7:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

(*have roots in *Classical/Ancient Greece...)
  7:13pm yi:

what about the ottowomen?
Avatar 7:14pm Bas NL:

Last year i had the good fortune to attend a magical show by Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares in our Dom church... there was a near stampede as so many people wanted to enter. Why are not many more groups and singers from the Balkans touring?
Avatar 7:14pm Tom Miller:

Hi Dan, hi Corinna, hi Fryers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Richard S:

Maybe, Bas NL, they can't afford it?
Avatar 7:15pm northguineahills:

I saw a Bulgarian choir and in addition to a Bulgarian wedding brass band at a Bang On A Can Fest. So amazing (Steve Reich was there too!).
Avatar 7:16pm northguineahills:

@yi: It's not proper to put your feet up on a ottowomen.

/or we can debate if Otto Von Bismark changed gender identities....
Avatar 7:17pm Bas NL:

@Richard S: Good point. Maybe it's more up to organizers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Michael 98145:

@Bas, in the case of the US of A, i fear our borders are becoming more difficult for artists to pass thru
Avatar 7:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...NonWestern Scale variations can be corrected for xenophones w/ OttoTune...
Avatar 7:24pm northguineahills:

@Michael: It's always been hard for musicians to get access to the US. I know so many people turned back at the airport.

Has the Donkey Drunk Water seems to be a universal song theme (content, not music).
Avatar 7:25pm northguineahills:

lultz, Rev!
Avatar 7:25pm Bas NL:

@Michael 98145: Yes that is most regrettable..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Michael 98145:
