nice harp at end of that Bird with Strings
  9:30am miles:

I imagine you'll include the Zombies version- it's world class
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Webhamster Henry:

This is not a little like Mary Wing's often undercounted "Three Of A Kind" set on her Give The Drummer Stream show "100% Whatever".
Avatar 9:30am TDK60:

A jazzy-rock version is by Ten Years After off their 2nd (live) LP 'Undead' - '68.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am TheLoneliestMonk:

at the height of his fame, artie shaw scored rita hayworth...woohoo!
Avatar 9:31am fred:

@TheLoneliestMonk: I'm glad I missed that one. The Bohemian Rhapsody show was bad enough. That's the difference between Joe and Ken: one plays good versions of a good song, the other takes a bad song and somehow makes it worse. Why do I remember the latter better?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am TheLoneliestMonk:

@Fred BwaHa! the SOB was proud of himself too!
have to admit, it was pretty much perfect in its awfulness!
  9:32am queems:

  9:32am listener Rey:

With strings was a thing. I also like Clifford Brown and Ben Webster’s
  9:33am GListener MW:

Do you have The Residents' arrangement of Summertime from their "George & James" album?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am YETI BOB:

The harmonies and chord changes are just perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am YETI BOB:

seriously, Gershwin wrote some of the best songs ever, you can't get around that fact
Avatar 9:34am northguineahills:

I was surprised when I asked for my grandparents' records, there were a lot of Sidney Bechet 78s and LPs. Never expected that. Never expected that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am TheLoneliestMonk:

@JM WHAT, no will smith today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am YETI BOB:

I am particularly looking forward to hearing John Fahey's semi-bummer instrumental version. He somehow makes it sound even more minor (diminshed?)
  9:35am ellliot:

Summertime was very modern - compare to the pablum that was coming out in terms of pop song at the time. Gershwin was no doubt influenced by Stravinsky and Antheil along with Ellington and the NY jazz scene
  9:35am listener Rey:

Bob Crosby was what Lester Young used to called a corny, non-swinging musician trying to play jazz
Avatar 9:35am northguineahills:

TheLoneliestMonk: ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am YETI BOB:

Also just read over at Wikipedia that George Gershwin perhaps borrowed some elements from a Ukrainian lullaby
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am YETI BOB:

(that he might have heard in NYC)
Avatar 9:36am northguineahills:

what Yeti BOB said....
Avatar 9:37am Sem:

*researched* is a more forgiving way of putting it, YB.
Avatar 9:37am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Once on Car Talk (Click and Clack, the Tappett Brothers) one of the guys ( I will say Joe) broke into this song. It would be cool if you could find that and play it! Not the whole song of course....
Avatar 9:37am Joe McG:

@YETI: You can definitely hear the Old World in there.
Avatar 9:37am Marc Francis:

Wow. The original is dark AF.
Avatar 9:37am fred:

@ngh: are you getting better?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am TheLoneliestMonk:

did you ever hear stravinsky's 'jazz suite'?...it doesn't exactly swing
Avatar 9:38am TDK60:

Great to hear the source.
  9:39am judy from croton:

How can it be that we can listen to one song forever? It’s got bones. It’s infinitely interesting, and welcomes interpretation. Hey, ain’t I smart?
  9:40am queems:

this gal is a little much for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Hughie Considine:

Old world, yes, but Iggy Pop interpolates "Summertime" in "Girls" and he's a pretty modern guy.
Avatar 9:42am fred:

I once took a date to see a Porgy and Bess performance. Unusual for me, I spend more time in small venues than at opera houses
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am annie:

see, and i thought i'd be able to go one summer NOT hearing this song. i guess the overkill is fine... ok, joe, carry on. :)
Avatar 9:44am TDK60:

Miles. // Judy's right, the song's interesting enough on its own for many covers to please us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am TheLoneliestMonk:

@JoeMac - do you own that lady day master take box? is it worth the outlay of $?
sometimes those "re-mastered" box sets are painfully disappointing!...
Avatar 9:45am northguineahills:

Was it Doug who did a whole 3 hours of Caravan?
Swag For Life Member 9:45am tadpoles:

From Miles to Martin...brilliant Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am The Oscar:

Whenever people ask me my dream job, I say "Birdcall Imitator for Martin Denny's Band."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Ken From Hyde Park:

Hey, I sense a theme here. Something between spring and fall. Possibly the opposite of winter. What could it possibly be?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am annie:

this is why i leave the DJ-ing to the professionals
Avatar 9:46am Joe McG:

@TLM: I don't, but the version here at the station sounds great.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am TheLoneliestMonk:

the last boxed set that made me deliriously happy was the stones mono box. unbelievably well done...kudos to jaggawitz!
  9:53am David Redbranch:

What a great show- so many great versions! My favorite has always been Big Brother and the Holding Company’s version. Janis at her best, and the best dueling guitar solos ever.

  9:54am Hi from Holland:

Abbie Mitchell + GG is my favorite so far...
Avatar 9:54am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@The LonliestMonk-I heard the mono mixes of some earlier songs were far superior to the less thought-through stereo mixes. Thoughts? Is there a mono mix to Dark Side of the Moon? Probably not!
Avatar 9:54am Marc Francis:

Can't wait to hear the Scarlett Johansson version....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am TheLoneliestMonk:

@WN yeah, there was an immediacy/energy to them too. it was as if the stones were suddenly your favorite garage band. had to buy that damn thing as an import to get the real goods!

a mono 'dark side'? Ha! dunno how parsons or waters would feel about that?

As soon as I heard the Summertime theme of this show, I thought of The Zombies' cover. One of the best.
Swag For Life Member 10:00am tadpoles:

@Joe-I would imagine it would take many weeks or months to put a show like this together Joe; would you mind telling us how long it took to prep this show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am TheLoneliestMonk:

@JoeMac - big ups on da thumb!
  10:37am Brendan:

@Joe - of course. Hey i tuned in late- did anyone do a reggae version? Interesting to imagine the tune in different styles . Polka anyone?
Avatar 10:38am JakeGould:

I think about 4-5 interns were hospitalized in the making of this playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Webhamster Henry:

"Summertime" is full of minor sixths that are mostly being ignored in these versions. #pedantic.
Avatar 10:38am fred:

Polka would be great
Swag For Life Member 10:39am tadpoles:

For Aldous Huxley fans....Soma time and the living is easy.
Avatar 10:39am βrian:

Ooh, was there a klezmer version?
Avatar 10:39am Joe McG:

@fred: I wish I had one!
  10:40am mjgoins:

This is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am YETI BOB:

@webmaster henry: as much as i enjoy some of these later versions, i was feeling like something is absent that was there in the 30's versions. i think it's that minor sixth you referred to.
  10:40am Neil in Somerset:

This is amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Webhamster Henry:

This is happy major version!
Avatar 10:46am JakeGould:

Please, no klezmer version. Polka? Sounds good!
Avatar 10:47am Rocky Horror:

Did the tape get stretched on this one?
  10:47am mjgoins:

"Many versions of a classic song" is absolutely one of the best things you only get from freeform radio.
Avatar 10:49am Rocky Horror:

@mjgoins: Even when Howard Hessman was a DJ at KMPX
Avatar 10:49am JakeGould:

Sissel Kyrkjebø does good singing.
Avatar 10:49am slugluv1313:

theremin version?
  10:51am Brendan:

Puckering up
  10:53am Dave from Brooklyn:

Wow! Such a magnificent song played so many beautiful ways! Thanks!
Avatar 10:53am βrian:

If you'd played them at 33, it would take the full time slot, Joe.
  10:55am frenchee:

Hi Joe, god bless you for the "VIE-counts"
  10:56am GListener MW:

this was amazing, Joe -- thank you!
  10:57am GListener MW:

OH it's continuing!!! =D I thought you were wrapping up the theme
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Webhamster Henry:

Someone ate the brown acid, clearly.
  10:58am Will:

Last night, the DJ on WMBR Cambridge played versions of "Last Train to Clarksville" for two hours. Not sure why.
  10:59am Listener Alexandra:

Joe, where on earth do you find this stuff? This is awesome!
Avatar 10:59am Rocky Horror:

Will: Is WMBR a Freeform station?
Avatar 11:00am TDK60:

These guys were having fun.
Avatar 11:01am JakeGould:

@Will: WHY NOT!?!!
Avatar 11:01am fred:

@Webhamster Henry: My post last week was very late, so maybe you didn't see it, I think I can put you in touch with the guy who did FactorSynth, if you're interested
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Ken From Hyde Park:

Did Sneaker Pimps impart any of this song for their "6 Underground" song?
Avatar 11:06am northguineahills:

Never heard the Free Design version!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Mike Sin:

Well, i thinks it's great that i get to sit in the park with the sun beaming down on me as you play "Summertime"!
Avatar 11:10am northguineahills:

Remember when Ken did 3 hours of Bohemian Rhapsody?
  11:11am Will:

@Rocky: Yes. Has some terrific shows. @Jake: I have to agree!
Avatar 11:12am fred:

@ngh: I do, unfortunately. Though the drunk guy in a cop car made it all worthwhile
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Webhamster Henry:

@fred I sent you a contact request. I'm also (still) available at jhhl@wfmu.org

@ngh KBC of Bitslap also did at least one Bohemian Rhapsody show.

Thanks to everyone who is sticking with me today! I'm loving it myself!
Avatar 11:14am Davee:

I'm stuck!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Webhamster Henry:

Fortunately, it's a song you can listen to without fatigue!
Avatar 11:15am Brian in UK:

Hey Jow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Mick:

Gotta say Nick Drake sounded surprisingly *not* laid-back on that to me.
  11:17am Dean:

In fact, "Summertime" is one of my least favorite songs (right down there with "My Favorite Things"), but total immersion has a kind of inoculation effect, and every once in a while (this Fahey, for example) the interpretation gets something about it just right.
Avatar 11:17am TDK60:

its the memorable melody, minor blues melody-riff, primal American...yeh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Ken From Hyde Park:

I suspect that the hidden motive here is that you'll only need to send a single royalty check today instead of dozens.
Avatar 11:19am Joe McG:

@Ken: Ha ha ha!
  11:20am dug:

bohemian?? not sure i could handle that for 3 hrs.
was it cool?
Avatar 11:21am βrian:

Joe's evil twin will next do successive covers of I Dig Rock & Roll Music.
Avatar 11:21am fred:

@Ken: Is is reporting time already? If so, nice move, Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am YETI BOB:

dug: i guess it depends on what you mean by "cool". (but, no).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Barney Grubbs:

any albert ayler coming in the near future?
Avatar 11:23am Joe McG:

@Barney: I got him with me! We'll see.
  11:23am Dean:

I'm sure that one source of the turn-off for me was a c.1990 test recording from an audiophile magazine that included the vocalist spouse of one of the regular equipment reviewers singing the tune a cappella. It was dreadful.
  11:23am dug:

haha. reminds me after waynes world came out and my mom got the sheet music for her piano. her practicing probably made ken's 3 hrs look easy
  11:23am Dean:

(Though I'd love to hear it again on today's show.)
Avatar 11:24am slugluv1313:

omg theremin AND saw!!! THANK-YOU JOE!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am The Oscar:

Had to get up for a minute, but glad I didn't miss Clara!
  11:26am mdashkin:

Sounds like summertime in a spaceship drifting beyond the solar system...
Avatar 11:27am TDK60:

Avatar 11:27am fred:

@dug: here's where you can test your faith: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Krys O.:

This Kingsley is a close second to Billy Stewart's version, IMO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am officina:

Digging today's theme show, Joe. Always loved this song, and the Zombies/Blunstone version is sublime.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am YETI BOB:

OMG, "Switched-on Gershwin"... I guess it had to exist but I never knew .... thanks Joe for turning us all on to so many new things this morning
Avatar 11:31am northguineahills:

I have switched on Gershwin...
  11:31am melinda:

Kingsley version was rad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am YETI BOB:

(Gershon Kingsley wrote "Popcorn"!)
Avatar 11:32am Joe McG:

@oficina: Once in a while I have to do one of these!
Avatar 11:32am Brian in UK:

Joe, it looks like our Summertime is disappearing fast and a temperature drop.
Avatar 11:32am northguineahills:

Santo & Johnny, pre-clickied!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am The Oscar:

Over-under on the Residents in the last half hour?
  11:35am Dean:

Totally forgot that Residents track! Those American Composer Series records are gems.
Avatar 11:38am northguineahills:

Summertime here doesn't end until after Halloween....
  11:38am Andy (DC):

Reminds me of Irwin's "Everlasting Love" show. But this is taking it to new levels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Todd76Pct:

Big fan of The Cosmic Rays with Sun Ra modernistic vocal harmonies version of Summertime.
Enjoying the show today, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am brycepunk1:

Been digging the show today. Interesting idea.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am TheLoneliestMonk:

i often think that Kenzo sees his on air shifts as much performance art as he does a musical interlude
Avatar 11:39am fred:

@dug: spoiler alert: the highlight is the drunken arrested guy
Avatar 11:40am Jersey Cowboy:

good ole shimmy disc
Avatar 11:41am TDK60:

would like more theme shows - an album, a group, scene, et..
Avatar 11:41am fred:

@TheLoneliestMonk: I one saw Kenzo live, and that was an unforgettable experience. You should try to see him live
Avatar 11:42am Davee:

it is unbelievable to think that you can fill an entire 3 hour show with the song "Summertime"...wow
  11:42am GListener MW:

WOW, thank you for The Residents' version! -- I haven't heard this in ages
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am The Oscar:

THERE we go!
Avatar 11:42am Joe McG:

@Davee: I have so many of these I could fill 10 hours!
  11:46am GListener MW:

I loved these two "American Composers Series" LPs the Residents put out; I wish they stuck with the project beyond those first two releases
Avatar 11:46am TDK60:

I wanna go to a notary public to assert I was never bored today.
Swag For Life Member 11:48am tadpoles:

Thanks for the great adventure Joe.....all so varied yet linked. Looking forward to Part II. Cheers.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Ken From Hyde Park:

Anyone else in the mood for (a lot of) "Bye, Bye, Blackbird"? www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:50am Rocky Horror:

MFSB did a song for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack
  11:50am partyfinger:

This song is catchy, It just might become a classic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am YETI BOB:

Rocky Horror: And the "Soul Train" theme!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am The Oscar:

I kinda wish this was a fill-in for Garbage Time-- three hours of "Summertime," with a brief interlude for "Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride)."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am TheLoneliestMonk:

@JoeMac: well, thanks for sparing us the horror of janis joplin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Passaic River Blues:

@The Oscar: hahaha That would be perfect.
Avatar 11:52am Sem:

Obrigado, Joe, for 3 hours of Summertime preserved in the amber of the FMU archives. See you and all later.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Mick:

Avatar 11:53am fred:

@The Oscar: no thanks man, now Matt will be planning a three hour show of Heavy Metal covers (even if he has to record these himself)
Avatar 11:54am PKNY:

I vote for "Heavy Metal" through Billy Stewart's echo machine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am The Oscar:

@PKNY Yesssssss!
Avatar 11:55am Joe McG:

Thanks for listening, everyone! See you on Labor Day! Enjoy the rest of your summer....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am YETI BOB:

after listening to this song 45 times now, I have another idea about what makes it so great. there are a lot of rests (pauses) in the song. lots of space, lots of "air"
Avatar 11:55am fred:

I'd probably like it if Matt does all covers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am YETI BOB:

thanks Joe, great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am blee:

@PKNY I second that vote for "Heavy Metal" through Billy Stewart's echo machine.
