definitely True Romance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Rob (Jerzcity):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Vincent Nifigance:

You're all right! 'Intertextuality and thematic development. From Badlands to True Romance'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Vincent Nifigance:

TLDR: "Home
Hans Zimmer’s produced score for True Romance (1993) pays homage to Terrence Malick’s debut feature Badlands (1973). The two films exist in comparable harmony through both musical scoring, and narrative themes. Inspired by its forerunner, True Romance director Tony Scott envisioned a soundtrack which held an acute awareness of the Badlands theme ‘Gassenhauer’ from Musica Poetica"
Avatar 9:38am Joe McG:

@CHUCK: Sorry to hear about the vehicle, but glad you're with us! @karl: Ha ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am The Oscar:

I'd like to see True Romance recut as a lyrical Malick-style meditation. Alternately, I'd like to see Terence Malick make a movie with Gary Oldman as a Rastafarian pimp.
Swag For Life Member 9:42am tadpoles:

These last 2 bands sound very Flying Nun Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am The Oscar:

Great title on this one.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Krys O.:

I say unashamedly that I love Sister Golden Hair.
Avatar 10:09am JakeGould:

@KrysO: It’s a beautiful song. You should be proud.

Oh, I also revisited all of the Boomtown Rats discography. And honestly Bob Geldoff really thinks he’s a punk Mick Jagger. But I enjoy their hits!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Itzall Ablurr:

Good morning Mr.Joe and friends. Pulling up late today but as the saying goes, "who took my damn coffee?!?"
  10:11am will:

Joe strains the limits of credulity by playing Sister Golden Hair but then the McGasko Effect takes hold, and we love it!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Krys O.:

This Dressy Bessy is tangentially making me think of Letters to Cleo who were in 10 Things I Hate About You which oddly enough has Heath Ledger's character name drop the Raincoats.
Avatar 10:12am JakeGould:

Sorry, that was really more non-contextual that usual.

Swag For Life Member 10:16am tadpoles:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am pantz:

Wasn't Ram the album Lennon railed Macca on, for being a sellout?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Krys O.:

@Joe: So did I. The movie was from 1999 and had a great soundtrack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Krys O.:

Yeah, pantz. That prompted the famous pic of Lennon with a pig, but Ram rules nonetheless.
Avatar 10:18am Marc Francis:

@pantz: i think Lennon was pissed off at McCartney because he took a swipe at him with one of the lines in a song.
  10:18am melinda:

Disappointed to see that I missed Sister Goldenhair while in transit.
Avatar 10:18am Brian in UK:

I think John Lennon was getting matey with a pig, whereas Paul McCartney anticipates Ramdom Access Memory.

Had a lovely Monday. The boiler became schizophrenic when I was in shower, so it was either scalding hot, or frigid. Then, I had to water the garden, as it's the first time since late March it hasn't rained in two days straight. Of course, the handle on the spigot broke off and got me soaked while wearing my meeting office garb (still soaked). Joe keep me sane this morning!

Avatar 10:48am northguineahills:

You hit it on the nose, peapod ross, I've heard him discuss boilers many times. This time, I'm not in NYC, and just have my own house, and the boiler was installed 2 years ago (according to my landlord), and it looks to me a modern model.
Avatar 10:49am northguineahills:

@Sheilab: As according to Uncle Michael, there are no guilty pleasures, and I dig the Police (well, some songs, like this one).

Krys O. Did you see the Grace Jones documentary that was in theaters the last few months? Some Sly & Robbie bits in that film. It wasn't the best doc I've seen, but two hours of watching Grace Jones do her stuff made it worth it.

@Nate K.: Me, too! I was going to save it for Story Corner (sad Johnny story), but I can always play it again when we get the CD at WFMU.
Avatar 11:01am northguineahills:

I bombed my house last night (I just had to cuddle w/ the neighborhood cats) for fleas. I went to a honky-tonk outside of town (I went exploring), and it was full of punks and progressive rednecks. Had some fun conversations.
Avatar 11:01am coelacanth∅:

foofs @10.49 haha, magic!
Avatar 11:09am slugluv1313:

thanks, Joe, for "Ain't Understanding Mellow" -- i fell in love with that song when i was a kid and it was a "hit single," STILL gives me goosebumps all these years later :)
  11:09am Dean:

No, most beautiful voice in the human race has to include Conchita Supervia among the candidates.
  11:11am melinda:

Sting fouled the bath water, it's true.
  11:13am Dean:

The Police went out of fashion for me c.1979, during a performance at the Whisky, when I yawned one time too many.
Avatar 11:13am northguineahills:

I actually like "some" of Sting's solo work. (it's a short list)/
Avatar 11:14am coelacanth∅:

well, Stewart Copeland songs (outstanding drumming he is not withstanding) ensured from the start that the bathwater had some crud floating around in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Passaic River Blues:

That was some choice Iceman and Eager in the last set.
Avatar 11:16am Joe McG:

@slugluv and PRB: Glad you guys love that record, too!
Avatar 11:17am Brian in UK:

@coelacanth∅ Stewart Copeland and I are twins, born on the same day/year.
Avatar 11:18am coelacanth∅:

..eh i shouldn't say that. Sting had some shitty songs right from the start too. and Copeland's got better by ghost... i like many of their early songs too though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Nate K.:

Jeez, Bonnie Bramlett was clearly the best singer on the original Roseanne, if not on the planet.
Avatar 11:21am Joe McG:

@Nate: Ha ha!
Avatar 11:21am coelacanth∅:

Brian really? does Sting's ego make you cringe at the same times it makes Stewart cringe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am doctorjazz:

Struck me as well what great pipes Bonnie had. Haven't heard her in a while now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am doctorjazz:

(but, she does have a vibrato that bugs me a bit ,but I'm a finicky listener)
Avatar 11:22am Marc Francis:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am steveo:

at the end of d&b i hit my desk just where i expected a big drum hit but no drums came over the wire
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am GeorgeSimian:

Does anybody else think Janis Joplin kind of sucks? She just screams through all her songs.
  11:27am melinda:

I remember that bit on Roseanne, it was great.
Avatar 11:28am JakeGould:

“Ghost in the Machine” and “Regatta De Blanc” are still rock solid.
Swag For Life Member 11:30am tadpoles:

Sorry GeorgeSimian I'm all in favor of "each to his own"..but no. I was just thinking during "Piece of my Heart" how Janis blows Bonnie away.
Avatar 11:30am βrian:

Apropos of nothing, I saw a flatbed truck carrying a monstrously huge, gold-colored burial vault this morning. Seems like such a waste.
Avatar 11:31am SueAdynamo:

Joplin has soul and is able to express it vocally. she is not gifted with the pipes but she had the heart. also she prob smoked - bad girl!
Avatar 11:32am Joe McG:

@SueA: I love to see and read her interviews, too. She's so funny and smart.
  11:32am Dean:

It's worth watching Dick Cavett's interviews with Janis. You can tell he really dug her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am GeorgeSimian:

Feel like she has one note. The originals of Piece of My Heart and Bobby McGee are so much better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Passaic River Blues:

Enjoying this Cold Blood, damn.
Avatar 11:33am northguineahills:

Oh, at said honky-tonk, I met a Mexi from Jersey City. And I was wearing an WFMU shirt.
Avatar 11:34am Marc Francis:

Let Me Down Easy = CHOOOOOOON
Avatar 11:34am JakeGould:

@GeorgeSimian: Depends on perspective. For example, I still like “Led Zeppelin.” But the older I get the more I realize they really just ripped off pretty much everything from others so blatantly I’m not too sure how important they are to me in that way anymore.

Still… “Physical Graffiti” is great.
Avatar 11:34am Brian in UK:

@coelacanth∅ no time for him. You seen those photographs of him with an outsize stetson. He needs one that big.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am mb:

Thought this "Let Me Down Easy" was a Bette Lavette re-do. Nice surprise from '69.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Nate K.:

@Melinda do you remember what song BB sang on "Roseanne"? I want to say "Dark End of the Street," but that seems too cool.
Avatar 11:36am JakeGould:

Sting is tedious. Still will admit the “Dream of the Blue Turtles” tour was my first concert ever. And wore that t-shirt I proudly paid $30 in 1980s money to death.
Avatar 11:37am Brian in UK:

@JakeGould play Trampled Underfoot at 11. No 12.
  11:37am Dean:

A bunch of LPs in a row
Avatar 11:38am Brian in UK:

Etta James lurking around here.
Avatar 11:38am coelacanth∅:

George, yes. just kind of though. absurdly overrated; but she hit some high points too, at times. the 2 big brother & holding co albums are excellent - probably because she was just a member and not in charge. and even after she decided she needed all the attention for herself she did some great things. her singing itself though? yeah often pretty horrible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Nate K.:

This is a fantastic set, Joe.
Avatar 11:39am JakeGould:

@Brian: In my mind I can play “Custard Pie” at noon.
Avatar 11:39am Joe McG:

@Dean: You guessed what they have in common! ;)
Avatar 11:39am coelacanth∅:

...and ghost in the machine is a truly excellent album, in my opinion!
...and Kathi's killin' it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am GeorgeSimian:

I think Janis had a great epic voice, but it was just one note. I'm listening to this Kathi McDonald and hearing so much more.
Avatar 11:41am coelacanth∅:

βrian @11.30 yeah that shit should be illegal
  11:41am Dean:

I'm smart that way, @Joe McG, very observant.

I like Janis, now these many years after first hearing her and not thinking twice about her. But then the same goes for Joe Cocker.
Avatar 11:41am JakeGould:

@GeorgeSimian: The exact same things can be said about Joe Cocker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Nate K.:

I had to look up Kathi McDonald. Apparently she was an Ikette briefly.
Avatar 11:41am JakeGould:

@Dean: Jinx!!!
  11:41am Dean:

Jinx, @JakeGould!

i shot the sheriff, but i was NOT up on choctaw ridge
  11:45am lee of Grangemouth:

Fully committed performances on all of these selections. Very good.
  11:46am melinda:

@Nate You Really Got a Hold on Me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Nate K.:

David Allen Coe's kid does a country music history podcast and the episode on Bobbie Gentry and "Ode" is incredible and highly recommended.
Avatar 11:46am coelacanth∅:

Janis was indeed smart and funny. interviews are very entertaining but also laid it right out how patheticly insecure she was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Nate K.:

@Melinda, yes, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am steveo:

well, that version has a confession dunnit?
Avatar 11:47am Brian in UK:

Joe, some great sets today. Thanks.
  11:47am Chi Bill:

Yes, Ellen came on the scene then kind of quiet, (stupid commercial radio). Nice show, Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Krys O.:

Janis was bullied horribly when she lived in Texas. She carried that with her into career.
Avatar 11:47am Joe McG:

Thanks, Brian! Thanks, Chi Bill! @Nate: Did he do one about his dad?
  11:47am peter64:

you’re killing it today joe
  11:48am Dean:

A year or so ago I played Aretha on the home system. My then 11YO looked up and announced, "That woman can sing."
Avatar 11:49am coelacanth∅:

Krys, right. it's saddening she couldn't let go of that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am steveo:

ok my bad, just misremembered the original; carry on
  11:50am melinda:

@Nate you're welcome!
Avatar 11:50am Joe McG:

Thanks, peter64! @Dean: I like that story!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am doctorjazz:

The Janis Doc is really good (don't love most music docs).
My 25 year old daughter, who is a singer/actress and loves contemporary music, is in awe of Aretha (I'm proud of that.. Now if I can only get my other daughter to listen to something that's not punk or metal...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Ken From Hyde Park:

Late good morning, Joe and Joe-kers. We're off to explore the zoo at Assiniboine Park. It's a lovely day here up north.
Avatar 11:53am coelacanth∅:

i don't know, doc, i might be thankful it's punk and metal and not rap.
  11:54am Dean:

@doctorjazz: To echo my comment upstream, you might introduce your punk/metal daughter to Conchita Supervia. Or Josephine Baker? Nina Simone? These are musicians at least as cool as the best punk or metal.
Avatar 11:55am Joe McG:

Hey friends, I've got to go. Stay tuned for Three Chord Monte with Joe Belock. Have a great week, everybody, and be with you again soon. Hope something fine comes your way.
Swag For Life Member 11:56am 12539:

Thanks, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am steveo:

thanks, Joe!
Avatar 11:56am coelacanth∅:

i'm not a parent, but i think one should think carefully before being the one to introduce certain music to your kids
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Anita in Morristown:

Love this album. Bought it in 1971 when it came out. Saw Janis with Big Brother at the Fillmore East Theatre in New York 1968. You're really bringing on some awesome memories. Mother Earth album 1971
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am doctorjazz:

(my older one, who's more open to new things, will recite raps word for word, I'm OK with that).
I just go with the flow, going to hear 2 punk-pop groups this month with the youngin'
Great show, Joe, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am mb:

Thx Joe!
  11:57am Brendan:

Thanks Joe!
  11:57am queems:

thanks joe! my whole family enjoyed the show today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Krys O.:

Gracias, Joe!
Avatar 12:04pm slugluv1313:

@ Anita in Morristown -- *jealous*! never got to see Janis (was "underage") but loved her when i was a kid
that last set was killer -- Kathi McDonald (is she still around???), Lydia Pense, Bonnie Bramlett, Tracy Nelson . . . agreed, tons of wonderful memories!
(only one "missing" is Merry Clayton :) )
