"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am karlward:

I imagine Rolnick does something very similar to this with his DVR when he watches Nick at Nite.
  9:11am Scott:

This intro always reminds me of the sped up and then slowed down versions of the Beatles songs (Julia, Tomorrow Never Knows) posted on the WFMU blog back in 2007. Amazingly, no link rot after all this time, and the mp3s still sound beautiful: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2007/10/the-complete-be.html

I do not wish anybody to be placed in a gulag or sent to Siberia. I just want people to listen to good music and be happy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am karlward:

Yesterday at WFMU I confused Grace Slick with Grace Jones and I was still right.
Avatar 9:16am Lixiviated Life:

the person i was seeing in 1975 played red octopus until the grooves wore through. i dont think i've heard this song since then
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am adampsyche:

Woo! Hey JA!
  9:18am Doobois:

The drive in today is ON!
  9:21am The 9am show intro:

I love this station, the music you play during the 9am show, but I need to voice some feedback. The intro to this show is nerve wrecking to hear. I wish it was different. If not different then not a full 10mins of various modified speeds. I have to turn the volume down and wait 10mins for the set to start, because that intro is kinda like hearing nails on chalkboard. I’m sorry but please consider an alt intro.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am lukavino:

counterpoint: a Friday that doesn't start with Rolnick isn't worth waking up for.
Avatar 9:23am John Allen:

Neil Rolnick fans: weigh in
Avatar 9:24am northguineahills:

The 9am show intro: I like the Neil Rolnick as a stand-alone piece, but, as a repetitive theme, it sometimes annoys me as well. But, that might mean I need to dash out the door for work. That said, I dig it....
Avatar 9:24am John Allen:

9AM, common reaction, try sticking with it 20 more shows. something may unlock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am karlward:

The Rolnick track made me laugh out loud while driving the first time I heard it. I love that track and it is a highlight of my week. There's always something new in it every time I hear it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am maestroso:

Thumbs up for the Rolnick!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am karlward:

Correction: made me laugh hysterically while driving.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am adampsyche:

i for one live for friday mornings and that track. like, i think one week JA was off and someone else was filling in and i was like "wwwwwwhhhhhhherrreeee is my rolnick this morning"
Avatar 9:26am northguineahills:

@karlward: that was my reaction the first 30 times I heard it. As said, a solid piece of art.

@Lixiviated Life: That's Bryce's show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am lukavino:

hearing Rolnick, McGasko's intro and even Matty playing Felder at 11:00 sharp give a sense of order to a chaotic world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am adampsyche:

hahaha @lukavino yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am adampsyche:

also sunday mornings i make the house stfu and listen to jeff's reggae schoolroom until we hear him bellow "good MOOOOORRRRNINNNNG" sometime before 10
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Devin B.:

I recommend singing along with Rolnick.
Swag For Life Member 9:31am Tiago from Portugal:

The 9AM Intro is my stomach's post friday lunch wake up call. Without it I would have no ways of starting my digestive process..
Avatar 9:36am northguineahills:

love hearing DK and Ryo Murakami in the same set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am karlward:

JA: Can I give you money not to play "We Built this City"? Either to you directly or the station?

re: Rolnick intro...
I don't want to miss it and actually look forward to 9am Fridays
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am steveo:

i missed the intro today (blame the children). wake up is very musical to me, but one thing that has helped me through the years is to approach difficult musical pieces as works of art and just try to listen to what the artist is attempting and acknowledge that all art is not meant to be easy or pleasant or pretty. (though wake up is very pleasant & fun, to me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am adampsyche:

this radio ravioli set was amazing a few weeks ago, i never heard that steve reich piece before: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am adampsyche:

@chris from dc there's a lovely cover of that song on Virus 100: en.wikipedia.org...

Avatar 9:45am Chris from DC:

@adam: Good choice having Les Thugs do that cover, too.
Swag For Life Member 9:46am justoffthebeach:

Look forward to Rolnick every Friday, totally justified.
Swag For Life Member 9:47am justoffthebeach:

I was a bit hesitant in the intro when first listening.
  9:48am The Butterman:

Friday mornings at 9:05 my high school students usually and collectively ask to go to the bathroom! Lol They know better to comment on the strange music they hear. They have accepted it.

this William Hooker track is pure fire!!!!!!!!
Avatar 9:55am Chris from DC:

I am pro-Rolnick, and I vote.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am steveo:

same (re hooker). also, every time i click a clickystar, ngh is already on it; has anyone ever seen the two of us in the same room?
  9:58am The Butterman:

Adampsyche, they can stick crayons in their ears if the don't want to listen. WFMU is one of the most important aspects of "culture of learning " I create in my art room.
Avatar 9:58am Rev. Turnip Druid:

heh! never thought to dig into the list of clicky-star competition. Now the game is on...

was fortunate enough to chat with W.Hooker before a thing in DC a while back. Lovely dude. Musical thunderstorms in that brain.
Avatar 9:59am Lixiviated Life:

Let the record show: I have always liked the rolnick "wake up" and I listen to Clay's Show too.
In fact, listen to almost every WFUM show (... maybe i need to re-evaluate my life choices)
  9:59am The Butterman:

Although, SMK makes me nervous and I have to turn down his mic breaks because he is prone to screaming inappropriate things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Mick:

late entry to the rolnick conversation: love it and look forward to it whenever i can tune in on time. that said, a few weeks ago i was working from home on friday and when 'wake up' started to break down, my girlfriend was all "aaaaaand, that's my cue to leave"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am steveo:

i saw forsyth street today, but i did not cross it; there's usually a bunch of cars in the way there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Greg from ZONE 5:

Avatar 10:32am Chris from DC:

So they call this dub, what, to be cool?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am steveo:

part of being a musician is being cool i'm ok with that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am peapod ross:

steveo, I always saw your image as like a sort of little drawing of a dog. two red eyes at the top, an ear at the top left. funny little nose and mouth there and a sort of light orange face.

But now I see it's just some chopped tomatoes and crackers.
Avatar 10:43am Richard Gruesome:

I believe it was an Irwin quote (just saw the movie)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am karlward:

Oh man everyone in Chelsea Market is on edge when this song is blasting. They have NO IDEA
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am TomDash:

Wow - bringing back a classic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am steveo:

brilliant intro.
Avatar 10:44am Chris from DC:

Just a reference to the top of the page. I dug that Jonah Dan a lot.
Avatar 10:44am John Allen:

maybe it was Richard. I havent seen the doc. I'm too close to the fire
Avatar 10:44am Jeff Moore:

Ha! It's been a few minutes since this was in heavy rotation.
  10:45am convoy_pt2:

Marc Maron should sing a cover of Zion the rocket ship
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am steveo:

i think the rule is you have to rewrite the lyrics if you cover this
Avatar 10:46am Jeff Moore:

Are you playing it from the ridiculous LP-looking replacement CD I burned after somebody lost the original?
Avatar 10:46am John Allen:

Steveo I've had people calling wfuv for 6 months requesting to play this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am steveo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am steveo:

sounds good after a rest i was listening to it like 6 times a week

Personally I really do not like the Rolnick song , but I do force myself to listen to it occaisionally to expand my Overton Window for taste in music. No change yet though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am peapod ross:

Overton Window sounds like a place they have to kidnap their boss to get a minimum wage increase after seven years, I don't know why.
  11:24am Captain Strange:

workshop de lyon is nice. shortest jazz songs coming to mind are all on john zorn's naked city album, however. a nice number called "New York Flat Top Box" is one second longer than de lyon's "Very Short" but, right after a sweet rendition of "Lonely Woman" comes this lineup: "Igneous Ejaculation" – 0:20
"Blood Duster" – 0:13
"Hammerhead" – 0:08
"Demon Sanctuary" – 0:38
"Obeah Man" – 0:17
"Ujaku" – 0:27
"Fuck the Facts" – 0:11
"Speedball" – 0:37
