A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hi Trouble - can you have David Rothenberg back for a show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Sigurður:

Indeed trouble, G'day tya
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Webhamster Henry:

When I saw him last, he was starting a project about nightingales in Berlin.

I like the artwork. Very evocative.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear βrian, is that a joke or a real suggestion? I don't think I'm even ingesting any buckwheat...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Webhamster Henry:

@trouble : I'm referring to a newer project; I saw Rothenberg last year at the Subterranean Poetry Festival (come on up this year, Modern Worlders).
From his website:
"Rothenberg is currently writing a book and making a film about playing music with nightingales. One excerpt appears here. The book should arrive in 2018, from the University of Chicago Press."
So: Book promo opportunity!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am melinda:

@Brian buckwheat is yang? I eat it daily.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Itzall Ablurr:

I just thought it was more of a (grumble, grunt) Mercury Retrograde side effect.
Avatar 9:25am βrian:

Very yang, from what I'm told, and hearsay is good enough for me. If you need to kick ass, start your day with buckwheat groats.

To all the mosquito bitten. I itch with you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Itzall Ablurr:

Wow, Trouble. That place looks amazing. EVERYTHING. I especially like the line on their site that says "Modern dishes that capture the flavors of the season • until 7:30pm". I assume after 7:30, the flavors of the season are allowed to roam free in the streets?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am ɨkɛ:

I realize now that's pretty out of context and seems quite militant when taken by itself, but if you'd seen the literally thousands of previous comments on previous playlists that inspired it, it would make much more sense, I *swear* it. Sorry, I'll try to make comments that make more sense in the here and now, and leave it to the DJs to be militant.
  9:50am kev:

nice song
  9:50am still b/p:

I was with someone yesterday who was stung on the nose by a maybe-wasp. The pain, moments later, was reported to extend from forehead to teeth.
Avatar 9:53am βrian:

I got stung on a tonsil once. (Biking with mouth open.) I thought I was going to pass out.
  9:55am still b/p:

Stung on a tonsil....yowwww damn. The only -- ONLY -- good thing sbout that is you have a sure winner when "got stung" stories are swapped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Itzall Ablurr:

still b/p, agreed, that's definitely a high-water mark for sting anecdotes but it COULD be topped, nod nod, wink wink...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am mb:

I got stung by a wasp on the areola once. Was bent over in pain. Took the air right out of me. Top 10 most painful moment.
Avatar 10:01am Wild Neil||Peace All:

When I was 3 or 4 I was stung on the upper lip by a hornet or yellow jacket. A couple days later, I sneezed out a dead insect. I cannot believe it unless I was there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am melinda:

Neil I got stung on my lip as a kid too, didn't inhale it though. Freaky.
Avatar 10:04am Wild Neil||Peace All:

I also had poison ivy over 90% of my body once when I was 12. Eyelids, lips, EVERYWHERE. Yes, even THERE. New skin eventually grew where the rash WAS. The human body is amazing.
@Melinda-did it go up my nose or into my mouth and through my sinuses?!
Avatar 10:05am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Yeah, "tonsils" wins, though!
  10:06am still b/p:

Took an earwig pinch or two well inside the underwear lines when I was a kid. Let's call it a "rhymes-with-anecdotal" attack. But wasps targeting the most personal and sensitive zones...that is turning the shudderworthiness up to 11.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Webhamster Henry:

@Mick The Subterranean Poetry Festival is along-running annual event at the Century House Historical Society's Widow Jane Mine in Rosendale, NY. This year: September 8th.

Avatar 10:20am Trouble:

let's be civil to each other here. please
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am melinda:

Neil it's not that rich people and money-making is bad, it's the environmental cost that comes with certain types of industry. There need to be incentives against degrading the environment.
Avatar 10:21am Trouble:

@lucky, boz still has his singing chops
Avatar 10:22am JakeGould:

@Trouble: Sorry. Didn’t realize there was even a previous snark issue before with others. Didn’t mean to add anything.
  10:23am Lucky:

Right? For a second I thought it was Syl or O.V. Wright...
Avatar 10:25am fred:

@Jake: it's 4:23 pm here, so neither lunch nor dinner
What's new and exciting here? Glad you asked! Benjamin Bret has a new record out, called Black Kracougol, though I guess one needs to know French the get the absurd lyrics.

Avatar 10:33am fred:

@steveo: a faint hope for a detour then. I'll take that (though the best place for her is in financial trouble, again)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am melinda:

Cool cats?
  10:36am still b/p:

Vibe-O-Need is a device or supplement I need to promote in infomercials. Here first, then will expand to Mars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am crateslinger:

Polluting is bad, but if you're going to do it, the funnest way is to throw beer bottles into a lake, and shoot them with a bb gun so they break up and sink. Harder than it sounds, especially when you're 13 and drunk.
Avatar 10:38am fred:

@still b/p: promote it first, then you can decide what it is

Avatar 10:45am Trouble:

hello @peter!! good luck with your show opening!!! can you post the info so seattle peeps can go see?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am melinda:

@Jake not really, my neighborhood doesn't have too many cats. To make up for that I follow a facebook page for the street cats of Istanbul. Have you seen the film Kedi? It's all about them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Itzall Ablurr:

Avatar 10:48am JakeGould:

@melinda: Heard about “Kedi” but haven’t seen it yet. My neighborhood is lousy with cats so I’m not that motivated to see a full-length film about them. But yeah, street cats are cool.
Avatar 10:49am βrian:

I watched Kedi with my cat. I loved it; he was unimpressed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Itzall Ablurr:

Just procured the Tanuchikan LP on the strength of the one song! Yet another record spin directly attributed to Trouble. AND WFMU, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Itzall Ablurr:

SPEND, not spin. That's for Dervishes.
  10:50am still b/p:

I think Vibe-O-Need provides a marvelous reduction in discomfort due to high humidity AND makes stinging insects feel too guilty and sympathetic to harm anyone other than malicious or indifferent polluters.

I think what matters about college is the network you build. Actual education is far down in terms of impact. The latter's value decreases fast, the former's is forever. Of course it mostly works for those who are already rich
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Itzall Ablurr:

Avatar 11:12am geegee vindaloo:

Hi Trouble, thanks for talking about admissions at a deeper level. I teach at RISD and at the teaching level it's obvious how a diverse group of students in any given class is essential to boosting everyones creativity.

My billions have certainly afforded me a few benefits along life's highway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Mick:

@Itzall Ablurr: exactly! so why take on debt that will make you an indentured servant?
Avatar 11:14am Lixiviated Life:

We have excellent State Schools in NY & NJ.
Save yourself the debt and apply in-state.
See Malcolm Gladwell'ls podcast Revisionist History from Season I Episodes 5 & 6.
Don't let anyone "school shame" you.
Avatar 11:14am Trouble:

indeed @ geegee vindaloo. my classes at RISD were filled with people from all over the world, and a variety of interests: that was sooo exciting to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Itzall Ablurr:

That's an excellent position, and I agree, WHY?!? Otherwise could I afford to spend upwards of $10 EVERY month for this station? I think not.
Avatar 11:15am JakeGould:

College admissions is one thing. The requirement of a college degree for seemingly every job out there is another. I’m of the mind that most jobs that “require” a college degree are actually not anything close to needing a college degree. Another sign of the erosion of the middle class. I think there is utterly nothing wrong with simply getting a high school diploma and maybe 2 years and calling it a day. But society (at least in the U.S.) doesn’t agree with that.

Avatar 11:26am Trouble:

sorry to hear that @ NGH. i advise my students to stay as clear as possible from debt. community college for 2 years then apply to a money school if you need to. state schools are obviously cheaper and are seeing a huge uptick of smart students who can't afford private school tuition.

@trouble; It's still a great place but we need to push harder to bring students and faculty of color into the school, these voices have been missed in my department ( we're working on it )

@Itzall Ablurr: "Vacations?" Dreadful thing. I'd rather get paid, but my employer won't, so I take the boring time off. I don't work for free, that's not negotiable. I won't waste money on an actual vacation either, WFMU needs that dough
Avatar 11:33am northguineahills:

@Trouble: It was mostly the medical bills. I did my undergrad on scholarship. Grad school in NYC is expensive, I must say, even living in the ghetto...
Avatar 11:35am JakeGould:

@ItzallAblurr: As someone who has had—at times in my life—become a workaholic to simply survive, don’t romanticize, “hard work ethic” that much. Few of the people who are millionaires and billionaires out there got that fortune from “hard work.” The sad reality of American life (and in other places) is the “Protestant work ethic” is utter bunk.

Covering Sun Ra is a win-win!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear JakeGould, I'm so very sorry that chatting here does not feature a "sarcasm" emogee (sp?), but trust me when I tell you that I was kidding. You see, my icon is of a character very clueless, pompous and wealthy- it's a joke, seriously. I do not "aspire" to be that person in real life!
Avatar 11:40am fred:

At least when it comes to software, the school you attended is BS. It only matters if you're going to be a "leader", in which case you're already loaded so it never mattered. Community college is the way to go. Nobody cares about your college after a year or so
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Itzall Ablurr:

Also, the Sun Ra tune was awesome!
Avatar 11:49am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Fred-my mom always said, "Son you are going to college to work for a man who never went there who runs a business.". My boss DID attend college, BUT he worked in the trades doing sheetrock for 30 years and did test lab work for about 25.

Cooper Union used to be free! But they DO offer some Financial Aid to many! I used to go there, but dropped out like a dummy.
Avatar 11:51am fred:

@Wild Neil: I'll take a wild guess and think he's a good boss

thank you Trouble! This woman is the greatest!!
Avatar 11:52am northguineahills:

I think my good friend was one of the last to get a free Cooper Union art educations in the 2000s.

Cooper Union looks like a great thing, but I don't know about it. What is/was it?

@fred: It's and art/architecture school. My friend got sponsored by Roy Lichtenstein before he died. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 11:57am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Fred-it is an elite Ivy-league level education for free. It was. Engineering, Art and Architecture. In a few years it should be free again. Why do they charge tuition? The board of directors built a multi-million dollar new building in Manhattant that they could not afford.
Avatar 11:58am Wild Neil||Peace All:

They had a 10% admittance rate with LOTS of applicants.
Avatar 11:59am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Maybe lower?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Webhamster Henry:

The CUNYs used to be free too. There's a movement to bring that back:
