Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am steveo:

i think the hold steady is probably more interesting when you can understand the lyrics, but I probably won't explore much further (at least until they show up in joel st. g's heavily played email haha)

Avatar 11:13am Sean B.:

Excellent show today Joe. I love Hollywood Dream, such an underrated band that I would have like to hear more from. Hank Ballard is the bomb. That is the best idea for a premium @JoeMcG I think you would have to do 3 or 4 premium to cover that subject. The Stroke!. Thanks again for the morning sounds. :-)

this is the *good* song?! from the Megan McDonough...
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

@Jake: Hmm. Maybe for the first couple of albums.
Avatar 11:26am Joe McG:

@Lewis: I have a weakness for songs about people dying from drugs, I guess.
Avatar 11:27am JakeGould:

@JoeMcG: So the first 3 it is. That is my general rule: Even for great bands the first 3 albums are really the bulk of what anyone should care about.
Avatar 11:27am northguineahills:

@Joe: So does SM Ken.
Avatar 11:28am northguineahills:

@Jake: Difficulty, the Beatles, Miles Davis, John and Alice Coltrane..., but yeah, they are the exceptions....

I am hearing multiple notes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am steveo:

@coel - the lead singer never really sings as far as i could tell. i think there's a literary quality that appeals to people about the lyrics. they were a very tight straight-up hard-charging rock and roll band please never bring them up again :)
Avatar 11:30am Joe McG:

This album's OK, but like a lot of MJQ, it's sleepy time. I don't need more than 2 MJQ LPs. This one has to go.

@ngh: The name "one note samba" always reminds me of Rhys Chatham's Guitar Trio, because it an E chord throughout. Of course the results are quite different
Avatar 11:35am JakeGould:

This sounds like an old family member’s middling bluegrass attempts. Did I ever tell you someone in my family I am not really fond of once attempted to be a bluegrass artist?
Avatar 11:36am Joe McG:

@Jake: This song is part of a side-long suite about a girl who falls in love with a drug dealer.
Avatar 11:37am JakeGould:

*mic drop* Goodnight folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am The Oscar:

@Dean One night in college I had a paper due and my roommate was watching TV, so I just put MMM on my headphones and listened to it on repeat. By the fourth or fifth go-round (probably around dawn), I found myself skipping to the parts that I was convinced were my favorites.
  11:38am Mark in Toronto:

I agree with you, the first album is a killer. Was lucky enough to see them when they played a small bar in Toronto in the 80's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Krys O.:

I used to play Fat Mattress, Noel's other band.
Avatar 11:39am Joe McG:

@Krys O: I like Fat Mattress!
  11:40am Dean:

@The Oscar: I'd love to read that paper.

Agreed re: Fat Mattress. Redding was in another band, wasn't he? Some hotshot?
  11:42am David in London:

I always liked Noel Redding’s advice to young, aspirant musicians - buy a gun and get a good accountant. Sad but true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am pantz:

You must have been in a really good mood to choose this 3 Degrees song, Joe.
Avatar 11:44am Joe McG:

@pantz: It's happy!
  11:44am lilmaloulou/ Mike tp:

love the unknown noel
  11:45am Mike tp:

great fst matress song I don't mind.....
  11:45am Dean:

So, "Two and Through"?
Avatar 11:46am JakeGould:

I like 1980s synths. But… This is like borderline cult music.
  11:46am Dean:

And what's so bad about borderline cults?
  11:47am Johnzon:

Avatar 11:47am JakeGould:

Full cult or GTFO.
Avatar 11:47am northguineahills:

I went crosseyed and was about to ask if Warp Recs was around in '82???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am robin:

new musik! most ungooglable band ever
  11:48am Dean:

You'd think The The, but no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Listener Scott:

The The may be more ungoogleable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Hughie Considine:

New Musik got a lot of play on WPIX in NYC with "Straight Lines" -- amazing singles band. Bob Stanley writes rapturously about Tony Mansfield's songwriting in his book "Yeah Yeah Yeah."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am The Oscar:

The self-titled album by Love pretty much drove me crazy in the filesharing days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Hughie Considine:

Girls was extremely Google unfriendly.
Avatar 11:50am fred:

@robin and Scott: 10 (Korean/Japanese duo) beats both by a few lengths

Sad but interesting news about the Fantasy Studios building here in Berkeley: http://www.berkeleyside.com/2018/07/29/berkeleys-fantasy-studios-an-internationally-renowned-film-and-music-studio-to-close-its-doors

Interesting group of commenters, including Damon Smith.
  11:51am queems:

mmm jesusy
Avatar 11:51am Joe McG:

This song is sort of like "Get Ready" done Jesus-style.
  11:51am David in London:

I remember New Musik’s ‘Living by Numbers’ being a huge smasheroo when it came out.
  11:52am Dean:

Gotta Cream thing going on, too.
Avatar 11:52am Joe McG:

@queems: Maybe I should give this album to Micah for his inevitable Jews for Jesus special.
Avatar 11:52am duke:

This is obviously not the Andy Barlow and Lou Rhodes Lamb
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am steveo:

hey @coel sorry if that sounded mean, i'm just being silly and feeling self-conscious about blabbing so much
Avatar 11:53am northguineahills:

Mmmm, going to make some lamb vindaloo tacos (from Indian leftovers). Thanks Joe!
  11:53am queems:

@joe mcg an excellent idea
  11:53am Dean:

Lamb vindaloo is...heavenly!
Swag For Life Member 11:55am 12539:

Thanks, Joe!
Avatar 11:55am northguineahills:

I'm adding ghost peppers, crema, my own tomatoes, and some refried beans, and queso Oaxaca....
  11:55am Brendan:

Joe I admire your courage. I too, like some of these almost cringe worthy songs.
Avatar 11:55am Sem:

See you and all next time, Joe. As usual, delicious spins and a scintilatting comments board takes the sting out of Monday blues.
  11:56am Dean:

Is queso Oaxaca a good melter? Or crumbly? Asking for the next time I make black bean enchiladas.
Avatar 11:56am northguineahills:

@Dean: It's akin to fresh Mozarella.
Avatar 11:57am northguineahills:

so, very melty!
Avatar 11:57am Joe McG:

@duke: No, definitely not!
  11:57am Dean:

Perfect, @ngh. Mental note to pick some up.
  11:57am queems:

the verse stole the melody from the holly and the ivy
Avatar 11:58am Joe McG:

Hey, thanks for listening to my closet cleaning today. Have a great week, everybody! Happy August!
Avatar 11:58am Brian in UK:

Joe, thanks. Hope you get good bids on (unmentioned) formerly auction site now given over to businesses.
  11:58am queems:

thanks joe!!
  11:58am Dean:

I would keep the Sunday Funnies, if only for the label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am pantz:

Thanks for another great show, Joe.
