"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Hey John, good morning.
Avatar 9:05am ben abs:

I, Unfortunately, have already been awake for far too long, always appreciate Neil's reminder though. This is like a mid-afternoon re-wake up. Hi JA & all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am The Oscar:

Waking up as requested.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am karlward:

JA: The MYDOLLS track you played last week sent me on a deep dive into Houston early 80s punk. Thanks for that.
  9:09am convoy_pt2:

Yeah John!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am steveo:

gee whiz, it's friday (hi)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am The Oscar:

JS in the AM.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Linda Lee:

still hear a bit of '70s defeat though..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am steveo:

is this the breakup album? gives me shivers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am karlward:

I am still not down with the Starship. I believe Craig Finn was referencing Starship when he shouted "I survived the Eighties one time already."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Linda Lee:

i think i'd forgotten about them by the 80s ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Linda Lee:

dammit, the strings. so Montovani.
Avatar 9:19am John Allen:

i think by the simple rules of frequency this was probably a breakup record for millions. people used to live in cars, yknow?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am MD:

outside! outside!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am The Oscar:

The correct context for Jefferson Starship is as holograms on the Star Wars Holiday Special.
  9:20am Rover James:

LMAO - The Oscar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Ken From Hyde Park:

This J. Starship number felt like it was the future back in the 70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Linda Lee:

actually think we live in cars moreso now. no car-phones then, for example.. unless you were James Bond or had the dosh to pretend.
Avatar 9:22am northguineahills:

Haven't had a Rheingold in ages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Linda Lee:

& then came Punk. blessed be.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am steveo:

i was thinking of fleetwood mac -- 1976 is a haze, i tell you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Linda Lee:

was just saying during Wake ~ if you travel back in time to the '70s, bring a note pad. you may become forgetful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Linda Lee:

i also have friends with photographic memories of the time. depends on what you were up to, i guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am steveo:

i was born in 1970, so i have a good excuse
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Linda Lee:

in that case the 70s are part of your subconscious, for sure. :-)
Avatar 9:44am northguineahills:

I have a photographic memory, but since I am a bicentennial baby, my memory only really started around '78....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Irwin:

Avatar 9:53am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Was too young to misbehave "properly" in the '70s, but old enough to be an utter freak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am steveo:

shamal wind sounds like it could be from the 70s, but it was released in may
Avatar 9:55am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Fond memories of a particular tri-tone velour shirt (the classic brown/orange/yellow) with obnoxiously large gold metal zipper-pull. Ah, yes.
Avatar 9:56am Davee:

Just tuned in . . . was distracted by work
Avatar 9:57am Davee:

Good decade the 70's were and I do remember them . . .
Avatar 9:58am D. Lightfoot:

Happy Friday all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am steveo:

"According to folklore, the first major shamal occurring around May 25 is known as the Al-Haffar, or driller, since it drills huge depressions in desert sand dunes. The second, arriving in early June, coincides with the dawn star, Thorayya (Pleiades), and is therefore named Barih Thorayya. During this event, which is more violent than the others, fishermen usually remain in port because ancient folklore tells them that this wind devours ships. Near the end of June, the last shamal arrives, known as the Al-Dabaran, or the follower. It is violent and continues for several days. Local residents keep doors and windows firmly shut as this shamal includes an all-penetrating fine dust which gets into everything."
Avatar 10:05am Chris from DC:

Oh yay, Bush Tetras. Actually considering a trip to see them fairly soon.
Avatar 10:07am Chris from DC:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am The Oscar:

This Paul Page is everything I want to hear right now.
  10:57am Tom in St. Paul:

Pol Pot had a very different take on that piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am crateslinger:

Hey Morphe, where do you swim in the East River, or the Narrows?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am steveo:

you can swim on the east shore of staten island but i think the harbor and the east river are too dirty for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Mister Dobalina:

Great show as always JA, keeping me in a good mood through this Friday work day. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am crateslinger:

I used to jump off the piers in Williamsburg, but now it's all developed and everybody's a narc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am crateslinger:

well... I used to jump off what was left of the piers in Williamsburg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Ken From Hyde Park:

Almost time for the 11:25 Ag Report. Take it away, Steve!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am steveo:

soybeans are down 13% to $8.55 a bushel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Mister Dobalina:

& coffee?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am steveo:

i can't recommend a bushel of coffee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am steveo:

you'll get the jitters
  11:30am Morphe:

Crateslinger --- And all
Only swim with an in tide or the 1 hour betwixt tide...Best time is the i hour high tide .. At low tide, it can be hard to get out- the seawalll.

Put a rope somewhere so you can pull yourself out...

Places: all along the east river (with a rope readY and tides in mind).. Hudson too off the piers, but a lot of police... ..

Easy bits.. underneath the Bklyn Bridge land there...
Underneath the Verezzano - Land bits there too

Now - just near the Ikea ferry - towards the cranes...

LISTEN CAREFULLY: no great dives, do not go too low(there are cables) and MINd THE FUCKIN TIDES - never on an outgoing tide!!!!!!!!!!!NEVER !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am steveo:

this track is contemporary? it's astounding.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am steveo:

my buddy got me a ticket to the hold steady in asbury park tomorrow -- they any good?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am crateslinger:

@Morphe - yeah, I'm a sailor, so I'm pretty alert to the currents - that's why I asked! - I almost lost a dog in the East at Grand St in Billburg a while back. Last year I went swimming in Sheepshead Bay twice and all my cuts and scrapes (I'm always a mess) got infected and wouldn't heal. Both times! I love that you bring a rope. That's badass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am crateslinger:

I remember about 25 years ago, when NYPD lost a diver and never found his body. He was with a dive boat and a bunch of other professional divers and just disappeared in the East River around Delancey I think. I never followed up, so maybe it ended differently, but that's the way I remember it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Mister Dobalina:

The Hunt For Red October.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doobois:

Oh, yeah! Sweet closer... (Maybe?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am crateslinger:

Morphe - the fact that you swim in the East River with a lifeline means you are a guy I'd like to meet. If you want to go sailing in the lower harbor (Rockaway Inlet/Sandy Hook/Verazanno Narrows) while you're in town, e-mail me dan at crateshop dot com. I have an O'day 30 moored in Sheepshead Bay and go out every weekend I can. It's hard to find crew though. Everybody says they want to do shit, but nobody actually wants to do shit.
Avatar 11:56am ben abs:

ThanK YoU
Avatar 11:56am Marshall Stacks:

I took a very memorable ride out to Banteay Srey (Srei) in the waning years of the Khmer Rouge. It's a magnificent temple.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Mister Dobalina:

I like to do shit, can I get shit on that boat too, I'm a hard worker. Feel free to say no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am steveo:

i agree the rope is badass; thanks for the great show john; i'll try to talk less next time
  11:58am Morphe:

Crate: Madrid is a dry, dirty fascist city (a lot of good people too).. I swim = paddle in the rivers north (40Min on the bus) I need oceans!!!!!!!!I take the train or plane to the Med every 2 weeks for a real swim... I am completely cut up from the barnacles. The Med does not normally have much tide but it is very low due to the drought here. I had to crawl across rocks/barnacles to get to my clothes. My son said I had to change my sheets because of all the bloodstains in my bed ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am crateslinger:

Mister D - send me an e-mail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am crateslinger:

Hey Morphe - read above for an invitation to the ocean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm crateslinger:

Bye JA - great show!
Avatar 12:01pm John Allen:

by everyone thanks for being here
