What 'the west' supposed to look like: upload.wikimedia.org...
Swag For Life Member 11:52am mdashkin:

Hi Mayuko!
When I saw your title "Go West," I pictured cowboys, horses, cattle, chuck wagons, sunsets, cactusses...

Good afternoon Mayuko and listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Dropof Goldensun:

Hi Mayuko and listeners!
  12:03pm listener james from westwood:

Howdy Mayuko and all!!
Avatar 12:05pm Mayuko:

Hi Michael, indeed! Somehow in the far east 'the west' is where the paradise is. I find these different connotations interesting...
Avatar 12:06pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, my radio family fred! Hallos Dropof, and james! Thanks for tuning in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm tmoyo:

Hi Mayuko & all!
Is this picture Shinobazu no Ike? I used to live really close to this place!

I spent an afternoon close to an awesome tree, a weeping blue cedar that is said to be the ancestor of all trees of that species. I'll look for a pic. I should have stayed underneath it, I got a painful sunburn instead

Was that Visible Cloaks track originally from Okinawa?
Avatar 12:17pm Mayuko:

That's right tmoyo! That's cool you lived near there!! Very nice area. I spent my last summer in Tokyo mostly in Sendagi and hang out by Shinobazu pond a lot.

@Mayuko: not very well... I listen, I haven't gone away, but mostly I'm too tired to communicate on wfmu-internet. That's probably going to continue. Every once in a while I post. Cheers.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Dropof Goldensun:

I grew up listening to Hawaiian music. Three of my great uncles were obsessed with it and had a band. I was quite young so I never thought to ask them what inspired them being that the three brothers were Italian. They're gone now but I still have some recordings of them somewhere!
  12:40pm JakeGould:

@DropofGoldensun: Wow! Cool. Where did your great uncle live? Hawaiian and tiki culture had a big boom at a certain point in the U.S. post-war world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm fred:

@Dropof Goldensun: I'd love to hear that, you should digitize these recordings (if you can find them) and send them to the station. I'm sure someone there would like them
  12:41pm Rickwaukee:

There is nothing wrong with this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm fred:

Is that Indonesian?
Avatar 12:42pm Mayuko:

@fred yup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Dropof Goldensun:

@fred - I'm going to be moving at the end of August so I'm hoping they will turn up when I begin to go through all my stuff. I'll keep you posted!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm fred:

I thought this one was Kyrgyz, but I guess Xinjiang isn't that far.
Weirdly, I had a dream about a pipa performance of Ambush from Ten Sides tonight
Avatar 12:51pm Mayuko:

@Scraps I'm just glad to know that you're around and listening to wfmu!
Avatar 12:52pm Mayuko:

@Dropof I wanna hear too! I wonder if they made some original songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm northguineahills:

I'm heree! Had a 78 hour work week, and finally drank myself silly. Luckily, the bartender and others were sympathetic to my week, and got me free drinks. (I need these sounds to work my garden)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm fred:

If you ever get the chance so see Kyrgyz performers, do so, it's a spectacular show. Tengir-Too were touring a few years ago, going all Hendrix on the komuz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko - I'm pretty sure they were all cover tunes but I'm not 100% sure. I will let you know!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm northguineahills:

errr... here (actually not hungover, homemade michelada made sure of that).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm fred:

@ngh: did you have to resort to your insanity peppers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

@Scraps, you were thought after on at least one message board I read, so you're not far from our thoughts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm listener james from westwood:

And of course you were kind enough to adopt the Drummer Stream, so your name pops up in my email 7 days a week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm northguineahills:

Is that a Nelumba nucifera in the pic?
  12:58pm doug seidel:

Mayuko: you = the best radio. also the breeze is blowing nice here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm northguineahills:

@fred: I'm doing that now, harvesting my insanity peppers, and will put them in my thai-ish curry later today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm northguineahills:

When I was kid, I was playing w/ GI Joes w/ my brothers near a lily pond around some volcanic rock. One brother pushed the other in the pond, and I decided to jump in as well. We swam in the muck. Good times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm listener james from westwood:

For "go west," most of me thinks of the Village People/Pet Shop Boys song, some of me thinks of Horace Greeley, and the rest where the Elves et al. came from in Tolkien.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm coelacanth∅:

that concept makes more sense anyway. the us is not any more west than it is east; and likewise regarding asia.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm northguineahills:

It's super hot in the Kanto prefecture, 100F+/40C+ today.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm coelacanth∅:

listener james, i always think of the Liz Phair song. ("go west")
  1:04pm P-90:

I thought of “Journey to the West” when you mentioned these different ideas of East and West right near the top of the Comments at the beginning of the show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm coelacanth∅:

ngh @1.02 -it's good muck!

Avatar 1:08pm Sem:

Hello, Vertigogo gals, guys, Mayuko.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm listener james from westwood:

I'll never say no to bonus Vertigo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm northguineahills:

@coel: now I study muck for work, and various species of lotus as well....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm fred:

East and west are relative, so I call it a tie. Let's go to overtime!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm paul b:

Well it all comes together really -- there is the trope that at the end of a movie the cowboy rides off into the sunset. The movie ends, we never know where he (or she) ends up when they arrive at that horizon.
Avatar 1:11pm Scraps.:

By the way, Mayuko, I am getting into a 11-cd set of an obscure label (at least here) K-HIN Bros. The set is called "21世紀の京浜兄弟者 History of K-HIN Bros. Co. 1982-1994". Lots of weird, cool art-pop, avant-prog, etc. but I can't really read up on it, because it's mostly Japanese and American coverage is really scant. Have you heard of them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm fred:

I was so waiting for that clicky star to appear
  1:13pm JakeGould:

In the “West” there are multiple things that point to the “East” being so special:
• Facing East while praying in Judaism.
• Facing East while praying in Islam.
• People who don’t align with major Western faiths who look to the people of the “East” as having all kinds of magic and wisdom.

I think the only time I can recall anyone considering the “East” in a dark/negative way was when referring to Eastern European countries.
  1:14pm JakeGould:

Also, there is the WASPy world of wealth in the Upper East Side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm doctorjazz:

This is pretty, have some similar recordings on vinyl compilations of early African music.
  1:16pm JakeGould:

Cheech Marin was “Born in East L.A.” but then there is “West Side Story” which is about poor kids in gangs duking it out and dancing.
Avatar 1:17pm Mayuko:

@ngh Haha! I hope your lily pond was cleaner than this "heaven". "swimming in lily pond" sounds very poetic but not necessarily the reality is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm northguineahills:

When I lived in Japan, I considered the states the East for obvious geographical reasons. It was around the time I started to read histographical accounts of East Asian culture, and the the term the Far East really confused me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm fred:

@Jake Gould: Then there's East Orange vs West Orange. One is world famous, the other might not even exist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm northguineahills:

(I was 10-13 years old at the time)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm tmoyo:

ngh, I always thought that too!
  1:22pm Rickwaukee:

Challenge: Make the harmonium sound bad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm fred:

I had to clicky-star the whole show
Avatar 1:22pm Mayuko:

@james The Village People/Pet Shop Boys Go West it thee most important Go West. I should have mentioned that.
Avatar 1:23pm Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ I like that song Go West too!
  1:24pm Rickwaukee:

What about the Demi Moore movie, 'Ghowest' ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm tmoyo:

I love the Pet Shop Boys!
I heard Ken play Go West in his Russian themed show last week.
Avatar 1:27pm Mayuko:

@P-90 Journey to the West is famous in here too right? I was wondering how many anime fans are aware that Dragon Ball was inspired by Journey to the West also.
  1:27pm JakeGould:

I grew up in “East Brighton” in Brooklyn which is now basically just “Brighton Beach” and we were all considered street trash. “West Brighton” is where the people who were equally poor—but mainly lived in Trump Village—lived. Predominantly bullies and poor people who thought they were “middle class” when they weren’t. East/West divisions are fascinating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm coelacanth∅:

fred there's a south orange and a plain old orange as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Ken From Hyde Park:

There is West Virginia but no East Virginia. Also, how's come there's no East World?
Avatar 1:28pm Mayuko:

Welcome on board, doctorjazz, Ken, and Sem! Glad to have you all here!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm coelacanth∅:

(though it's not usually referred to by it's full title, "plain old orange")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm fred:

@coel: too bad, such a missed opportunity
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Dropof Goldensun:

Hey, I lived in East Orange when I was very young!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm northguineahills:

@Mayuko: I was a dragonball nerd as a kid. I had all of the menkos and sainto seiya ones as well (and the figurines). Somehow, outside of the the really good ones and the classic, my interests in anime dropped off when I hit uni....
Avatar 1:30pm Mayuko:

@tmoyo I was thinking of going to Tokyo this month, glad I did not! Going there in October instead!!! That way hopefully I don't have to die there.
Avatar 1:32pm Mayuko:

@paul b Good point! the cowboys might have off to Amitābha's paradise.
Avatar 1:32pm Mary Wing:

Signing in to clicky-star this Matthew Young. Hi Mayuko and radio friends! This show is excellent music as usual!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm northguineahills:

@Ken: "West Virginia is best Virginia". that 's my tagline for my avatar at a certain ball shaped vexillographical comic based subreddit..... (I'm a WV native)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm fred:

The intersection of West Virginia, Florida and WFMU shall prove more potent than The Man expected
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm coelacanth∅:

i must've learned something about "the directions" (east, south, west, north) and that everywhere is relative to somewhere else, before ever hearing that asia was called "the far east" because i remember being very confused by that phrase.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm coelacanth∅:

hi Mary!
Avatar 1:36pm Mayuko:

@Scraps 京浜兄弟社, think I heard of it as something to do with Yuichi Kishino? Isn't he involved in this group?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Brian in UK:

Hello Mayuko and funsters. Quick hello after finishing a chainsaw course. Information overload.
Avatar 1:38pm Mary Wing:

Happy Saturday, coelacanth! I'm still in my pajamas! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm coelacanth∅:

Brian, that's good news though. i might've benefited from a chainsaw course.
  1:39pm JakeGould:

Well, if you talk about cowboys you always have to remember the world of the cowboys were immediately in the aftermath of the U.S. Civil War. So you basically had all of these crazy soldiers running around with no wars to fight, desperate for work and suffering from PTSD. So no wonder they always got into fights, hung out with hookers at saloons and—let’s face it—were pretty racist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm coelacanth∅:

Mary, likewise!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm northguineahills:

@fred: My life is basically WV, FL, Japan, and Brooklyn. It probably made me schizophrenic....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm fred:

@coel: Maybe that's why most Parisians are so afraid of going to Instants Chavirés in Montreuil. Across the periph' is the Far East to them
Avatar 1:40pm Mary Wing:

Chainsaw course, Brian? Is that like an obstacle course you have to saw your way through?
Avatar 1:40pm Mayuko:

@Jake Interesting re: facing east while praying. I wonder what people would do if they're traveling North Pole?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm coelacanth∅:

haha! or the obstacles are running chainsaws?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm listener james from westwood:

@JakeGould: And as Journey has been told a zillion times, being born and raised in South Detroit is more like "born and raised in Canada."
Avatar 1:42pm Mary Wing:

Sounds like a scene from Monty Python's Architect Sketch: "Did you say 'rotating knives'?"
  1:42pm JakeGould:

@Mayuko: Ha! Indeed. I saw some question online about how a Muslim should deal with “facing East” if they are in space. They have to pray like 5 or more times a day so it’s a big deal. And the conclusion was basically they merely have to face in the direction of Earth in general because in space Earth specific references to east, west, north and south don’t mean squat.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm coelacanth∅:

fred i tried looking that up but all the search results (including wikipedia) are in french!
Avatar 1:43pm Mayuko:

Hey thanks for listening, Mary!! And welcome, Brian in UK!
  1:43pm JakeGould:

@Mayuko: Also, the facing East while praying thing is a Western thing. It basically all refers to facing in the direction of Jerusalem or Mecca.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko - When at the North Pole you can pray to the West, East and South all at the same time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm coelacanth∅:

...but whichever way you face, you're facing mecca. (unless you're facing into space, or you're in mecca, facing away from it)
Avatar 1:46pm Scraps.:

@Mayuko, he's in there, apparently.... with Miyazaki Takashi (as 宮崎貴士)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm northguineahills:

@Mayuko: at the North Pole, any direction is technically east towards Mecca. There is even an app to help Muslim astronauts in the international space station to pray towards Mecca. But it seems like you'd have to move a lot, as the velocity it travels makes such relational directions fleeting in reference to this planet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm coelacanth∅:

(...or unless you believe you're upon a flat planet)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm northguineahills:

Jake beat me to it...
Avatar 1:47pm Mayuko:

That's kinda hilarious people had to figure out what to do in space, though I do see it's an important question.
  1:50pm Rickwaukee:

My religion transcends space time and direction - I worship Funyuns
  1:50pm JakeGould:

@Mayuko: A lot of religion is based on being controlled and asking permission. So in every day life, someone who is faithful might seem okay. But then in extreme cases, the basic questions—that many of us would consider basic common sense—become big crisis of faith situations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm fred:

@coel: Instants Chavirés is my fave venue, and it sits just outside of Paris. It's a common joke among born-there Parisians that newcomers are afraid to cross the city limits for fear they wouldn't be let back in. It's more than a joke, sadly, they feel it's beneath their newfound (baseless) status
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Space vertigo can be quite severe, I am told.
Avatar 1:52pm Scraps.:

Tipographica, Hi-Posi, Zypressen, Organization, Expo, Syzygys, King & Country, Being Beauteous, Art Core Funk, lots of Japanese names, of course....

if you want to look at the list of songs (which I don't blame you if you don't!), it's here:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm fred:

I don't think people in Indonesia pray East. There's a sizeable Muslim population there
  1:53pm Rickwaukee:

I will NOT apologize for my earlier Ghowest post
  1:54pm P-90:

Actually, when you are standing exactly at the north pole, any way you face is south, not east or west. However, as soon as you step away, you van turn to your left or right to be "facing" east or west. I'll bet that Muslims working near the north pole use the same or similar app as astro-Muslims to find the direction to "face" Mecca when saying orayers.
Avatar 1:55pm Scraps.:

Oh, and you played Space Ponch at least once, I discover
  1:55pm P-90:

...or the south pole
Avatar 1:55pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee Regret nothin!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm coelacanth∅:

Rickwaukee, mine does too. i'll be worshiping some salmon with bok choy momentarily.
Avatar 1:57pm Mayuko:

@P-90 That makes logical sense! Question resolved!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm coelacanth∅:

well, the point is that they face mecca, not that they face east.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm fred:

I remember attending such a Tibetan performance (not ritual, it was for us tourists) with a friend. We got high on joints she provided at a break in the middle. I did like the second part better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm coelacanth∅:

fred thanks. -and, that's kinda funny, in a sad way!
  1:59pm P-90:

I dont believe you can even stand (or kneel on a rug) at the actual north pole because now there is a pole there. Like a pole stuck in the ice to mark the location of the north pole. Of course the MAGNETIC north pole is in a different spot. But i think that pole is marked by a pole also...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I like this monks' choir selection.
Avatar 2:00pm Mayuko:

@Scraps yah, Space Ponch, one of many projects of Yuichi Kishino. When you live in Tokyo and sorta pay attention to those subculture scenes you see his name all the time, and yet it's never become too clear what exactly he is/does, haha. I never knew what exactly that Keihin Kyodai was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm coelacanth∅:

yeah i just turned this up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm coelacanth∅:

Rickw for the record i chuckled at your ghowest pun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Dropof Goldensun:

@P-90 - Let's not forget about Santa's workshop getting in the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Dropof Goldensun:

The monks choir gets a thumbs up from me too.
