Borodin (for whom this quartet is named) was also a pretty famous organic chemist for work the aldol reaction & some other early stuff

Hey Kurt! What’s up?
Avatar 12:22pm Kurt Gottschalk:

barney, i never knew!

heya, jakeg!
Avatar 12:27pm Jeff Moore:

Thanks for playing this Debussy! It's been so long since I listened to it that I forgot to remember how much I like it.
Avatar 12:27pm Kurt Gottschalk:

god, it's just so good.
Avatar 12:28pm jesien:

this debussy is so beautiful, so summer-like...for some strange reason now it feels so much more intense, or this piece specifically, then some other pieces, or what i used to think of him (as light and happy). this G minor quartet is light but also melancholy so it's more. such a nice way to begin the program!
Avatar 12:29pm Jeff Moore:

What @jesien said.

Hey Kurt.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Michael 98145:

speaking of Satie, if you ever get a chance to visit Honfleur in Normandy, the Satie Museum is truly wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm crateslinger:

Is it crazy that Tanya Tagaq reminds me of Prince? Like, she might lick me or something.
Avatar 12:54pm Kurt Gottschalk:

lol @Rob the prophesy has been fulfilled!
Avatar 1:00pm jesien:

yes, diamanda galas too!
  1:05pm elwyn:

hey everyone!
Avatar 1:06pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

When I was living in NYC going to Cooper Union I took out a girl on a first date to see Diamonds Galas at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine. It was 1991. Wow. She insisted on walking out. It was a bit much for me too. i think D. Galas is a witch. I group her with Psychic TV and Fields of The Nephilim as music I will not listen to any more due to their world view.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Devin B.:

Might need to get this Angelique Kidjo
Avatar 1:08pm JakeGould:

I utterly don’t believe anyone—even a fan—would take someone out to see Diamonda Galas on a first date.
  1:08pm mzzmz:

Borodin SQ! calling my college days...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Michael 98145:

enjoying this version
Avatar 1:10pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Jake Gould-I was famous for bad decisions in the 90's. Today, the decision seems pretty epic failure. She DID say that opera was an apocalyptic act and I HAVE heard some D Galas from my roommate Egg who seemed to like it, so I said "hey, wanna see this OTHER apocalyptic singer? By NO means was I a fan, I just HEARD of her. Pretty dumb of me, I know.
Avatar 1:11pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

It's kinda funny now, 25 years later!
  1:11pm mzzmz:

Did ya know? Ms Galas often stop-by at Kim's video. Once I told her my admiration especially to her distinctive piano style. She graciously thanked about it. Really her singing style gets attention but listen her piano. It is one and only a kind....
Avatar 1:12pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

I have been to a Kim's video on avenue A or 1st ave I think in the 90's. THAT one?
Avatar 1:12pm Kurt Gottschalk:

wild neil, that concert is so famous! i'm jealous (and also can't believe you took a date).
Avatar 1:13pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i shoulda been your date.
  1:13pm mzzmz:

The 2nd floor one was for Rich Kern.
Avatar 1:14pm jesien:

we both should have been his date!
Avatar 1:14pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

Heh. Probably Kurt! I would have gutted it out for you since I believe in sonically challenging myself, even to music I HATE at the time! I think she did the satanic litany, it was some scary shit!
Avatar 1:15pm JakeGould:

“I was famous for bad decisions in the 90's.” At least that trend has stopped, I assume.
Avatar 1:15pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

Pani Jesien: Moja żona jest Polka! Moj Po Polsku jest duza Katastrofa!!
@Jake-I am on the straight and narrow now, so my decisions are generally better now.
Avatar 1:15pm JakeGould:

@mzzmz: The second floor of what? Kim’s on St. Marks?
  1:15pm mzzmz:

There is wonderful Ms.Galas live at NIGHT MUSIC onYoutube. That one is still my favorite.
Avatar 1:16pm Kurt Gottschalk:

jesien, yes.

wildneil, i believe that concert came up in the nea funding controversies, along with robert mapplethorpe and karen finley, if i recall correctly.
Avatar 1:16pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

Wow, and the concert was at a CATHEDRAL. Think about that for a minute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm chris:

needed this shiva spear through my ego today, Kurt. thanks! and, hi!
  1:17pm mzzmz:

Kim's was 2nd floor on the corner of 1st Ave + St Marks then moved to bath place. Real Kim's culture was the 2nd floor one.
Avatar 1:17pm geezerette:

Alice Coltrane is exquisite.
Avatar 1:18pm jesien:

yes it was an american version of current pussy riot affair or something, at least they didn't arrest karen finley, robert m. and her... just took the moneys away from us for a long time : (
Avatar 1:19pm jesien:

oh Wild Neil - say hi to your wife then! (dzień dobry) for me
  1:19pm mzzmz:

But I went Ms Galas at Carnegie on the Halloween night tho.
Avatar 1:20pm jesien:

oh. my love. you are playing now my ever favorite, Nusret Fateh Ali Khan. i recognize him from the first three notes, like first drops of rain
Avatar 1:20pm JakeGould:

Well, the NEA controversy also bolstered efforts like Giuliani’ war on night life that basically killed off clubs like the Limelight. Now ever club is someone floating party in a dumpster you only know about by texting someone an hour before it al goes down. It’s all literally an SNL Stefon sketch come to life.
  1:22pm mzzmz:

Yes Her St Cathedral concert was midst of AIDS, NEA controversy and, remember?, Mayor Dinkins! I remember seeing the posters at Columbia campus.
Avatar 1:22pm northguineahills:

Missed Alice due to a meeting! ack!!!!

Avatar 1:47pm Lixiviated Life:

sorry i'm late.
i was busy considering an "incredible offer"
but i'm over it now
Avatar 1:51pm JakeGould:

@mzzmz: My biggest memory of that Kim’s video was a friend suggesting we go up there to rent a copy of “Penn and Teller Get Killed” and then remembering we were only teenagers and singing up for video rentals was really like filing a Visa application in some places and then deciding to not to that and just rummage through record and CDs again.
Avatar 1:54pm JakeGould:

I meaning “signing up.” I wouldn’t sing for a video membership.
  1:55pm kudubundu:

This music takes me somewhere else and I love it? St Albans UK
Avatar 1:55pm slugluv1313:

Good Afternoon, Kurt and everyone!
loving the raga . . .
@ Michael 98145 -- i used to be able to volunteer at the Chhandayan All-Night concerts -- so wonderfully BLISSFUL!
i would have been so totally impressed if someone had taken me to *that* Diamanda Galas event at St. John's -- but hey, that is just *me*
i met Ms. Galas some years later, when i was working at Tower Books -- i thought she looked familiar, but then finally realized it WAS her when she came up to the register and i saw her hand tattoos . . . and she was so super sweet! shook my hand (as i am thinking -- "wait a minute, YOU are the famous person, i should be shaking YOUR hand!" hah!), was saying how much she liked the store (had had to leave with a friend earlier but then came back), was impressed with the selection, etc. . . . :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm The Oscar:

Tuning in late, but GOD I miss Kim's-- it used to be an essential part of any NY visit for me. One of my most cherished finds was a DVD-R containing two of the old FMU "Irritainment" specials, along with Harvey Sid Fisher's "Songs of the Zodiac" and a bunch of other gold. Just about anyone who's been in my apartment more than once in the past dozen years or so has been subjected to some or all of that disc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Michael 98145:

our frequent Indian classical concerts dried up when the audience aged to the point where they couldn't stay up past 9 pm. and the young folks just didn't care enough to attend.
Avatar 1:59pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

My ex girlfriend wanted me to rent a dirty movie from Kims so I picked Debbie Does Dallas and she was like, "what the heck is this shit? Let ME pick something out". So she did. Classic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Michael 98145:

wow, thanks, Kurt
Avatar 2:00pm JakeGould:

To be honest, I have mixed feels about Kim’s since I knew a few people who were screwed over by Kim’s in different ways over the years. I’m generally happier that the Internet exists and lots of obscure stuff is a available for streaming and download much quicker—and sometimes better quality—than scoring some 7th generation VHS dub from Kim’s.
Avatar 2:01pm geezerette:

Pure bliss,thanks Kurt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm Michael 98145:

Avatar 2:06pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

I saw the Crafty Guitarists back in the 80's, 2 shows in one night. Inevitably during the Q and A session the question came up "When will King Crimson return??".
Avatar 2:07pm geezerette:

Jesien, what color is the sky?
Avatar 2:07pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Jesian: my inlaws are visiting Podlaskie right now. There is nothing there yet it is so beautiful.
  2:08pm mzzmz:

but sill I have fond memories of 2nd floor Kim's. Do you remember the extremely moldy crusted brown carpet? I was told if you were even on sandal, godforbid bare foot would 100% chance to get hep-B.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Carmichael:

Kurt, will you be playing Rudolf Schenker next? :)
Avatar 2:09pm northguineahills:

Can't wait until I leave work, hopefully it's earlier when I left at 11:30 last night (or 3am Sunday night)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Michael 98145:

yikes, @ngh
Avatar 2:10pm JakeGould:

@mzzmz: I don’t remember the carpet. Just the smell. I think the first comment I made was about the carpet. We left their and found even the basement of Venus records to be less stinky.
  2:11pm SeanG:

great show Kurt! :-D
Avatar 2:11pm Wild Neil||Peace All:

@NGH: my boss values life/work balance and wants me to go home 4pm every week day. I am SO lucky.
Avatar 2:12pm JakeGould:

The place I really have fond memories of in my earlier media hunting days was Titus Oak’s Records on Avenue U in Brooklyn. Closer to me and tons of great stuff for cheap.
Avatar 2:13pm geezerette:

ngh, bound to be a temporary situation, the long hours. Your boss ought to paint your house!
Avatar 2:13pm jesien:

oh i love the transions today, briliant. from debussy and satie to Tanya Tagaq, Nusret Fateh Ali Khan, to Anoushka Shankar .... the air is thickening and everything, even dust, is dancing :)
Avatar 2:13pm northguineahills:

@Wild Neil/Michael: Usually if I stay late, it's on my own volition, but this week we have our annual content report to the state DEP at the same time we're expanding our office, and we're doing all of work ourselves instead of hiring contractors, so, I feel like I'm doing two work-days each day this week. Should be back to normal by the end of next week.
