A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar 9:05am Trouble:

no interviews today @jdaFrom cologne. but there will be some words
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thursday, the most Troubled day of the week. The mic break birds will be warbling about France's successful soccer run.
Avatar 9:08am jdaFromCologne:

words of wisdom i guess…
Avatar 9:10am Diezel Tea:

I think I saw Mary Lattimore perform in Tbilisi last year. I just remember for the fest she was booked as "The Jimi Hendrix of harp" and she was using effects and such.
Avatar 9:11am Diezel Tea:

Maybe a different female harpist from the US.
Avatar 9:11am northguineahills:

I knew this was Mary Lattimore!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am mb:

Speaking of "the mic break birds" another DJ at the station borrowed your style, Trouble. He was warned to cease and desist.
  9:14am emily:

very sweet to hear "deep purple"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am NotARealDoctor:

Oh my God, I really dig that clarinet. Okay, okay, back to work. No procrastinating.
Avatar 9:15am Trouble:

no @ken from hyde park, there will be no soccer talk. i am not a gloater. @mb, i am not a litigious gal...
Avatar 9:15am Diezel Tea:

Ah, no it was Zeena Parker, the US harpist that played SOU Festival in Tbilisi. If you're interested in experimental harp music, haha, I guess check her out if ye wisheth.

I probably wouldn't know who Jeb Magruder was if not for the block of Doonesbury strips devoted to him in the '70s.
Avatar 9:22am Diezel Tea:

So I'm assuming that's where the rock and roll band Magruder Grind got their name? Was Jeb Magruder into grinding wood? Meat? Crotches? I'm unfamiliar, help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am steveo:

note to self: different from Zapruder (& greetings all)
  9:24am exile-on-hicks-st:

Maybe sime “Deserter’s Songs”?’

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am listener james from westwood:

If nobody's mentioned the recent Slow Burn podcast about Watergate, two thumbs up from this quarter. Lifts a lot of rocks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am listener james from westwood:

@dug: While out delivering stuff for the drugstore I worked for in high school, I stopped and listened for like a half hour in a parking lot to the North hearings. It was riveting and I finally understood what my parents experienced a decade and change earlier w/ WG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am The Oscar:

Mornin' all! As a kid, I didn't have a concept of "dated references"-- if I saw Bugs Bunny make a joke about Eddie Cantor, or found an old National Lampoon with jokes about Spiro Agnew, I felt like the onus was on me to learn about them. I found out about a LOT of 20th century culture that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am steveo:

linda! there's a great youtube of her doing this with the stone poneys....

@Oscar that's a good way of looking at it.

that boz scaggs album was #2 on the billboard charts in 1976
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am steveo:

She likes it a lot. We all go to Philly together sometimes. The vegan food is surprisingly great there.
Avatar 10:15am Trouble:

@roberto: good to hear! i love philly, and dj icepack is a city kid, he wants to be able to move around and see the sights...
Avatar 10:16am Roberto:

I must admit I hadn't thought about Philly much until she got into Haverford. We visit frequently now and we love it.
Avatar 10:20am Trouble:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, gang!
Avatar 11:06am northguineahills:

As someone who worked for four years for the Census Bureau (2006-2010 in NYC), this is relevant to my interests. Fuck asking about citizenship. That will kill any accurate count!
Avatar 11:06am Trouble:

census link
Avatar 11:07am northguineahills:

(said question was only used in WWI and the years leading to WWII).
  11:07am Karen:

Is the question of citizenship on the census currently? Isn’t it disconnected from immigration though? I mean hard to trust that, but I’m just curious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Passaic River Blues:

Thank you for the link, Trouble.
  11:08am Karen:

You guys are great. Answered my questions before I got them out.
Avatar 11:08am SueAdynamo:

  11:09am Karen:

Avatar 11:09am northguineahills:

(and we know what happened to American citizens then)

@Karen: No, citizenship hasn't been on the form for 70+ years. There are the rare specialized long form questionnaires that may ask the question 1/10,000, but the response has always been voluntary since 1964.
Avatar 11:10am northguineahills:

I'm rather passionate about this issue....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am steveo:

Avatar 11:13am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Per the constitution the census should merely COUNT people. That's it. How many are there? Anything else is un constitutional. Those "extra" questiolns are extra-constitutional. In other words, above and beyond an therefore illegal. Better answer, though, or face a $10,000 fine!
Avatar 11:13am herb.nyc:

just tuned in - thank you for the "leave comments on citizenship question". relatedly, my friend and i are donating to MAKE THE ROAD NEW YORK. (her company will match the donation; i do this when donating to wfmu).
Avatar 11:14am Wild Neil||Peace All:

How many PEOPLE are there? Edit. Sorry!
  11:15am Karen:

@north Thank you! I’m with you in passion for people to be free in “the land of the free” and in making the census more safe and thus more accurate. I appreciate you helping with my ignorance. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am SSS:

I don't think it is generally well known that census data in Germany was one of the precursors to WW II...in the same way things are happening now.
  11:16am Karen:

@steveo Dance party here too!
Avatar 11:16am northguineahills:

Thanks Trouble for the link. I made a customized message.

@Karen: As long as you help me w/ my ignorance, all is good!

Avatar 11:19am northguineahills:

ugggh, keyboard dying, Where government resources should go (brain might be shutting down as well).
  11:19am Karen:

@north always happy to share knowledge no matter the direction
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am coelacanth∅:

SSS there are countless things the us government is doing, for a few decades now, that are exactly as germany did in the decades prior to ww2; and many nazi quotes and attitudes (& policies, obviously) that apply here now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Adrian in London:

AH!!! THE BLUE NILE!!! Thank you!
Avatar 11:27am Trouble:

do you have all three records @ adrian? i only have 2 and the 3rd is selling for mad money...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Ike:

Wow, I sure didn't expect @WN to weigh in our side of this census issue. But that door-burning, Polish-lady-ogling gentleman is quite unpredictable! LOL.
Avatar 11:29am bobdoesthings:

hey all!
Avatar 11:29am Joe McG:

Trouble, thanks for the BN! There was a fourth one that came later on in 2004, too! The 1st is still my fave.
Avatar 11:30am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@SSS-can you please post a link about the pre-cursor census to WWII in Germany?
@ Ike-well, I think illegal aliens should not be here in the first place. But asking the census to do the work of ice is like asking the FBI to take kindergarten attendance. I also think Reagan was wrong to cut taxpayer funding to the Post Office. EVERY OTHER country has a state-funded post office, its job is to spread written information affordably for ALL citizens, confidentially.
Avatar 11:32am Wild Neil||Peace All:

I also think Barack Obama did a GOOD thing opening talks with Cuba.
Avatar 11:32am Wild Neil||Peace All:

And Jimmy Carter is an upstanding guy. He sounds cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am SSS:

I participated in Jimmy Carters CETA program while in college.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am coelacanth∅:

in other words, germany is acting responsibly.
Avatar 11:33am ottovonbqe:

I have been ignoring all the threatening letters the census sent me. I read somewhere they can't really send you to jail, but they will come to your house and harass you.
Avatar 11:33am jdaFromCologne:

its raising over the lastt few years… even without immigrants… :-)
Avatar 11:34am jdaFromCologne:

basically as high as 20 years ago…
Avatar 11:35am βrian:

My dad benefited from CETA, too. It got us through a long rough spot.
  11:35am asm1582:

Can't agree with this commentary - but love the show otherwise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Ken From Hyde Park:

They should just do the census via Facebook. 1-2-3, easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am SSS:

Cool @Brian, just glad at least someone remembers it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am coelacanth∅:

no. all nations on earth should be encouraging less birth. there should be no "maintenance" of a population that surpassed the planet's ability to support it many decades ago.
Avatar 11:37am Wild Neil||Peace All:

When I was out of work a year (2010, hangover from 2008 crash), THANK GOD Obama extended Unemployment Insurance for a year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am ɨkɛ:

@jdaFromCologne: 1.59 (your rate in Germany) is still not enough to keep a constant population. As for the US: www.vox.com...

@c∅: Agreed. But we're really just talking immigration, not world pop. If people move here from elsewhere, that's no addition the world population, and they'll be in a place where they might be able to learn about and/or get birth control more easily!
Avatar 11:39am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@ottovonbqe-I am sure you could always sue the Federal government and get a jury trial that is fair and affordable! Wait....maybe not...I honestly think you should just answer and avoid jail or a fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am coelacanth∅:

true,Ike, but Trouble actually WAS talking about birth rate.
Avatar 11:39am fred:

@Ike: Learn more about and get birth control? From Mike Pence and pals?
Avatar 11:40am Wild Neil||Peace All:

I think children are a blessing.
Avatar 11:40am ottovonbqe:

You are probably right, but I got one of the long form things and it is longer than an SAT and very personal. I angrily threw it in the trash.
Avatar 11:42am jdaFromCologne:

guess we need to import some chineese then… :) in a not economic way i think there are enough germans … pensionwise that sucks of course –but i dont get any anyway…
Avatar 11:42am Trouble:

@coelacanth: i am not encouraging giant population growth but i am referring to the continued working of future generations as a way to pay for the services that are needed for the elderly as they begin to work less and need more
Avatar 11:42am ottovonbqe:

If obama didn't need to do a long form birth certificate, I shouldn't have to to do a long form census.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am SSS:

I just want to throw this out there. Forgive me for a biblical reference, but Moses debated this issue with God. Moses complains to God how difficult these people are to manage, that they want a King to lead them, and not just to rely on faith and being moral in behavior. God consels against it, saying if you establish a king, he will take a census, and use it to amass an army for wars. It has and always will be populists and fundamentalists that will destroy us.
Avatar 11:44am fred:

@ottovonbqe: Kenya is actually pretty advanced when it comes to digital stuff. I'm sure you could fill that form from your phone there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am mb:

ah yeah, i'm here for the Jamaican music segment. Thx Trouble!
Avatar 11:46am ottovonbqe:

Obama gave me my phone and it sucks! Can't fill out anything except this playlist comment.
  11:47am Lucky:

Consumerism (and greed) and the pollution they produce are as much to blame for the planet's inability to support the life forms on it as how many people there are. A balance is required in everything.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am coelacanth∅:

Trouble @11.42 okay, but that's a vicious cycle. problems will continue to get worse as population increases. there's no rational argument against that. and Lucky (@11.47) is correct, but it is both the population and the selfish ways that people live. the us government encourages selfish living because it benefits their ulterior motives.
