I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Death in Midsummer, a short story by Yukio Mishima www.sfponline.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am listener james from westwood:

I attended a funeral yesterday, which maybe is why this line jumped out: "Such incidents of course go far beyond the dictates of custom, and yet at no time are people more bound to follow custom."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01pm fred:

Good afternoon Mayuko and listeners
  12:02pm P-90:

A reading assignment? Oh no, I'm behind in today's lesson already...!
Avatar 12:03pm Mayuko:

@james You already skimmed all the way through to the funeral scene?! Proofreader's speed, I suppose!
  12:03pm ike:

Dig it.
Avatar 12:05pm Mayuko:

Hello my radio family fred! P-90, you can skip it it's basically just some people died, as usual for the JP literature from that time period, haha.
Avatar 12:05pm Mayuko:

Hallo Ike!
  12:07pm Alessandro from Italy:

Finally today I will decide the music for my funeral
Avatar 12:08pm Dave B:

I recently added Oshoshiki to my Plex library.

And then in a weird twist of fate, my friend Tomomi sent me a letter from Japan telling me her father passed away, and that she won't be able to send birthday or new years cards for a year of mourning.

What's proper protocol? Should I send a note of condolences?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Dropof Goldensun:

Greetings Mayuko and listeners!
Avatar 12:09pm Dave B:

sorry Ososhiki.... typing with fat thumbs
Avatar 12:09pm Mayuko:

Welcome to Play Vertigo, Alessandro! My playlists are good funeral-music catalogue!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm melinda:

hi folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Dropof Goldensun:

I'm hearing a little Bach mixed in there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm fred:

I read a Mishima book back in college, but had trouble finishing it. I don't even remember which one it was
Avatar 12:14pm Mayuko:

@Dave B Been wondering if you could add some Tora-san there in addition to Ososhiki. THAT is the real gem of Japanese art!!!
I'm not the best person to ask about social protocols but I think a note of condolences is what you're supposed to do... Mochu-mimai or something it's called...
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

As Mishima writes, "A death is always a problem in administration" indeed!
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

Good afternoon, Dropof and melinda! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm fleep:

The title of the story kind of tips it, so I saved a bunch of time by just reading the title.
Avatar 12:17pm Mayuko:

@fred He can be pretty ridiculous, probably that's why you didn't finish.
  12:18pm P-90:

Not skipping a Mishima. Reading now, while listening, music and words make sense together.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm listener james from westwood:

@Mayuko—Heh, the timestamp was when I finished! I just copied that line in case I spotted more than one to comment about here. Fiction I usually force myself to go slowly b/c I proofread and edit so little of it!
Avatar 12:19pm Mayuko:

Hi fleep! He's good at titling his stories... I've forgotten most of what he wrote but I remember the titles, haha.
Avatar 12:21pm Mayuko:

@P-90 I'm glad! That was how I was listening to this record over and over this past week because it reminded me of this short story.
  12:23pm Dave B.:

Thanks Mayuko! I will do that. I’ll be adding more to plex soon. Just got a bunch of Hotchcock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good afternoon, Mayuko and the Vertigo Village. My ice cream didn't fare well in the Garbecue heat. If I served it at 9AM, it wouldn't have been all melted. I guess I need to bring more ice or a freezer along next time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm fleep:

Melted ice cream and a straw is its own separate pleasure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Dropof Goldensun:

I prefer my ice cream in it's solid state!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Ken From Hyde Park:

"Hey everybody! Who wants peaches and cream?"
Yeah, that may have worked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm Brian in UK:

Hello Mayuko. Death and paperwork. No escape.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Ken - How about Peaches and "Herb"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm fred:

@Ken: Was the garbecue as fun as advertised?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Dropof Goldensun:

@Mayuko - I am totally digging this current track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Mayuko and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Dropof Goldensun:

Hey coelacanth∅
Avatar 12:34pm Mayuko:

Hi Ken! I missed your ice cream but tried Ample Hills Creamery for the first time that day... it was okay.
Avatar 12:37pm Mayuko:

Hi Brian in UK, and coelacanth∅! Thanks for tuning in!
Avatar 12:38pm Mayuko:

@Dropof glad you dig! I had been wanting to play that album for a while but couldn't find a spot to squeeze it in til today.
  12:44pm Alessandro from Italy:

I know your shows very well, Mayuko. I was impressed becauseyou were the first girl to offer uninterrupted This Heat track "Metal"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@fred - I had a very nice time. I thought it was great. It was hot and uncomfortable by early afternoon, but a few clouds rolled in around 3PM and improved things. Lots of good food and meeting FMU personalities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm fred:

This is a very nice soundtrack to read that Mishima story by
Avatar 12:51pm Mayuko:

@Alessandro oh, thanks! I just get too excited when listening to This Heat dunno how to stop it, haha.
Avatar 12:52pm Mayuko:

@fred Great! That was the intention today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Brian in UK:

You have to be bold to play long instrumental tracks. Ah Freeform.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm coelacanth∅:

hi Dropof
Avatar 12:55pm Mayuko:

@Brian This Heat is a safe bet since they don't lose intensity even when it's a long track. But yes hurrah for Freeform Radio!
  12:57pm Dave B.:

I’ll have you know that there are baby Blue Jays on a terrace across the street
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm coelacanth∅:

i figure if people disrespected my wish to have no funeral on my behalf then they'd at least be expected to play "i feel free" by cream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Brian in UK:

@Dave B, just had a Goldfinch eating at the bird table. The fledgling Blue Tits are learning how to feed outside of the nest as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Brian in UK:

Not many Swifts this year.
Avatar 1:01pm Dave B:

@Brian - the Blue Jays and Red Tailed Hawks have been known to duke it out in my neighborhood - Upper West Side Manhattan, just off Central Park.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm listener james from westwood:

We've had some crows locally in Bergen County. Vocal ones. Nice to hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Brian in UK:

I find it difficult to like Magpies.
Avatar 1:11pm Mayuko:

@Dave B BABY BLUE JAYS!?!?! That must be so cute!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm david w:

Hello Mayuko and all! We've got mockingbirds and mourning doves in Williamsburg. Somehow appropriate for this show.
  1:12pm rw:

Hello! Checking in to get my Vertigo credit.
  1:12pm rw:

Though I haven't done the reading assignment.
Avatar 1:13pm Sem:

Greets, Mayuko, the Vertiginous, and similarly-minded folk.
  1:13pm Dave B.:

Next time i go to japan i need to either make or find a field recording of the Yaki-imo truck. That song is the best
Avatar 1:15pm Mayuko:

Hi david, thanks for tuning in! The way mockingbirds sing sounds often a little too proud, maybe that's what's appropriate for Mishima-inspired show, haha!
Avatar 1:15pm Mayuko:

Welcome, rw, and Sem! Glad to have you here!!
Avatar 1:17pm Fox:

I am sorry I am late, but I am here.
Avatar 1:17pm Mayuko:

@Dave B All the old-fashioned street venders calls are worth recording! Many of them can be listened in only museum archives these days...
Avatar 1:18pm Mayuko:

Never too late, Fox! Happy to have you here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Brian in UK:

Just in the middle of reading Perfidia by James Ellroy. Based on the days after Pearl Harbour and the effect on Japanese folks in Los Angeles. Powerful writing.
  1:20pm Dave B.:

Back in the 90s there was a mockingbird on the roofs here that would sing the car alarm song. I kid you not... at the end of the song, hed do the chirp of someone shutting it off and a back flip
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Brian in UK:

Ah Pataphysique. The answer to imagined questions. Thank you Alfred Jarry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm fred:

I just finished the story, though I was tempted to bail out before the end. I liked it at first though. Not my kind of writer, I guess
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Brian in UK:

We have some Peacocks near us. They do make a racket when trying locate each other. Nothing subtle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm coelacanth∅:

i've seen/heard videos of mockingbirds doing that. they're amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Brian in UK:

Hey Sem, still got the buzzing on my computer, need to resolve this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm fred:

I saw Anne-James Chaton and Andy Moor last month. Good show, but not as good as earlier ones. I don't like how the voice's intonation matches the words on this track
Avatar 1:28pm Sem:

Hi, BiUK. I can barely read you over the buzzing on your computer...maybe @fred has an idea?

Scotland-bound in mid-October, will you still be the laird of all you survey, esteemed Salopin?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm david w:

David Dunn teasing mockingbirds with a Moog in the woods in 1976 www.youtube.com... Save it for later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm fred:

These days local crows volunteer to act as my alarm clock around 6am. Some took a liking to my window, but it's too hot to keep it closed at night
Avatar 1:34pm Mayuko:

@david d I MUST watch that video when I'm done!!!!!
Avatar 1:36pm Mayuko:

@fred We don't have many crows here in NY it seems. Tokyo is basically a city of crows so it took me a while to used to not having them around much.
  1:36pm P-90:

I love the phrase "A Moog in the Woods"
  1:36pm Rickwaukee:

Music for my independent movie in my hrad
  1:37pm Rickwaukee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Brian in UK:

@Sem a trip down South you are more than welcome (whatever that means!) Certainly. If you can make it here.
Time for tea then to the local church to hear the choir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Dropof Goldensun:

@david - OMG I have to watch that video too! Back in the 80's I used to tease the birds from my window using a Sequential Circuits Pro-One!
Avatar 1:38pm Mayuko:

@P-90 me too!!!
Avatar 1:38pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee That's how I enjoy music too!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm fred:

Crows can be really loud, especially a few feet from my bed. But I loved seeing them play on the playground slide downstairs. Sadly, the slide was removed a few months ago
Avatar 1:40pm Mayuko:

@fred Crows on a slide?! That's so cute! They're smart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm ♪ke:

@Fred@12:31, I thought the Garbecue was a blast this year partly because a random super-enthusiastic WFMU fan who had never been there before showed up and raved energetically to Rob W. about how good his show is. He looked totally startled (Transpacific Sound Paradise doesn't get much love sometimes). She and some other people got me talking so that's a little unusual.
  1:47pm Rickwaukee:

I have no idea about what's popular or selling well so am wondering are movie soundtrack albums even a thing anymore, besides Disney kid stuff? Or is that something left back in the 70s 80s?
Avatar 1:48pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee As long as Morricone Island continues on WFMU, movie soundtrack IS a thing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm fred:

@Mayuko: Yeah, they'd fly to the top, slide down and take flight just before reaching the bottom. There didn't seen to be any point in this, that's why I call it playing. Maybe they saw kids doing it and thought they'd try it
  1:51pm Rickwaukee:

They used to be huge revenue for the movie/label conglomerates - did a La La Land soundtrack make a blip?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm fred:

@Ike: I can't listen live to TSP, but I always get Rob's premium. Top stuff
Avatar 1:56pm Fox:

Hooray for the Garbeque! I, too, had a fun time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm fred:

You nailed it Mayuko
  1:57pm Rickwaukee:

I know you all wish you could join me today on my trip to buy a new sump pump. Try to have a good day anyway.
  2:00pm Rickwaukee:

Thank you, Mayuko, for another great batch of gloomy death related music! You the best. Love
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm fred:

Thanks Mayuko, enjoy Ice Cream Time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Dropof Goldensun:

Great show! Have a great weekend everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm coelacanth∅:

oh yeah? maybe I'LL go buy a sump pump!
  2:00pm P-90:

Thank you, Mayuko-DJ!
Good story, great music.
And some possible themes for future shows: music with bird sounds, or a show inspired by Tora-San...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm coelacanth∅:

...Thanks Mayuko!
tchau camaradas

Thanks Mayuko! Always a pleasure to catch the Vertigo. Have a good weekend everyone!

@fred oh good! I tried harder this time!
