I thought you were subjecting to the hellscape that is Gloucester, UK, but know, it's 10 times worse, it sounds like Gloucester, MA!
Avatar 7:05pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

Correct! Closer to home for me, I was up there last weekend to absorb the local announcements

me no english gud... (but since this a field recording of mass, I may come out seeming above average...) (ragging on massachusetts, and I live in florida, the irony...)

melinda:

What kind of fiesta was this?
Avatar 7:29pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

It's a big carnival they have every year with boat races and stuff. We just heard the conclusion of the 'greasy pole' where local kids try to grab a flag planted on the end of a telephone pole fixed to a pier and covered in a thick layer of grease.

I once stumbled upon a pirate festival in South Bristol, ME.

Looks like stupid fun (I'm a sucker for stupidity and fun).

I like watching stupid fun, as long as no one gets hurt.
Avatar 7:46pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

@melinda, was there a boat boarding competition?
Avatar 7:48pm
northguineahills:

I'm an expert at hurting myself, although usually these days the fun part is left out of it....

Ok, leaving work, hear ya at home later, thanks Jesse!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
melinda:

@jesse maybe! There was an old ship and some cannon firing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm
melinda:

I like these sounds.
Avatar 7:56pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

I want to see some rope ladder climbing competetions or something, that's terrifying to me.
Avatar 7:58pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

I believe these harmonic sounds are wind moving through a stopped windmill. The write up is "Talvisatama (Finnish for Winter Harbor) was recorded on the Gulf of Bothnia in Finland from 2014 - 2016 over the long winter months and slow approach to spring."

While I was visiting my dad's place after he died I heard similar harmonic sounds around the radio tower he had put up near the house. They were quieter but I attempted a recording, will be interesting to hear how it turned out.

Jesse Kaminsky:

The trick somehow is to record the wind on other things without getting the wind on the microphone

I saw Carlos Giffoni do a noisey techno set at the Bunker in Brooklyn 3 years ago, it was a blas (nice too). Also like his Monotract work....
Avatar 8:40pm
Jesse Kaminsky:

oh cool, I hadn't heard of Monotract's stuff!

Yeah, I like that Antemeridian record a lot! She also plays as Antenes, well worth checking out if you get the chance

hmm i missed something windy? ...@8.34 that's exactly right too. i started a piece sometime before i moved, 23 months ago, and only once i made the recordings in my apartment did i notice all the other sounds that the beautiful wind instigated. (that i did not want in the recording) so i went looking for a source. went to abandoned shacks and abandoned trucks. nice whistling but too much wind in the mics. then, after i abandoned my original idea for a piece that welcomed other sounds, a very windy day came in my new apartment and i could record it from inside and still get the whistling.

Haven't been to a Bunker party since I left the city, but I used to play either the early sets or the barroom w/ the non-banging techno sets...(which could be anything, but electronics were encouraged....
Avatar 9:28pm
northguineahills:

In one of my apartments years ago, one of the radiators if it was barely open (on) and it was silent otherwise, would sound like a black metal band playing in a cistern 3 floors below. Just started reviewing my old mini-disc field recordings from 15 years ago....

Going out for a walk, thanks Jesse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm

oh that sounds wonderful ngh! i'll never forget the wide variety of sounds the radiators made in the house i grew up in...that i did not record. my father still lives there, but he replaced the radiators with baseboards.
