This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Looks like fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm chresti:

Ahhh! Salty air!

Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc! Hi Chresti!
Avatar 7:02pm northguineahills:

I'm assuming when I go to Miami Beach tomorrow, it's going to look like that.
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

you betcha! Hi NGH!
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

using some field recordings from last night's swim tonight, courtesy my friend Mikey and his fabulous mic
Avatar 7:12pm northguineahills:

reminds me I owe Jesse some of my frog field recordings (and I have just 3 days to finish my composition w/ my friend and get input from Matt from Gig Talk who is playing w/ us Monday).
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

that sounds great, i love frog recordings
Avatar 7:16pm northguineahills:

considering we've gotten about a half inch or more of rain all but three days the last 12 weeks, the swamps are LOUD around these here parts.....
Avatar 7:17pm northguineahills:

*Southern speech patterns emerging, losing Yankee accent (not sure which accent is worse)*
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

all accents are bad, all accents are good
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

i bet you have a real frog symphony down there man
Avatar 7:23pm northguineahills:

I played this Dennis Wilson song and my wife hated it, but once it got more trad psyche new/agey BB, (the album it is), she mellowed out. (Love this album).
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

a lot of tonight's proceedings are based on past beach trips over the last decade or so, and there's hardly an album that looms larger than that one for us
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm chresti:

Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

it's an acquired taste. I didn't get it at first, but now i love it intimately
Avatar 7:29pm northguineahills:

Now I want to hear a cumbia rebajada version of Jaws.....
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

oh me too that would be so good
Avatar 7:37pm quinn:

yeah my friends and i are always blasting dvorak from our beach house
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

That particular symphony has played on a lot of beach ddays around these parts
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

also, Hi Quinn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm chresti:

which beach
in these parts you speaking of?
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

we're on Emerald Isle in North carolina
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm chresti:

And how do you do the Clam?
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

it's my buddy's aunts' beach house and we've been coming here since small times, so it's rife with ritual and tradition
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm chresti:

Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

i have no idea about doing the clam, i imagine you do a digging motion?
Avatar 7:46pm quinn:

i was bein sarcastic if that wasn't obvious. i love this song tho! we go to sunset beach NC every year and our tradition is playing Mafia / Assassin with a big group. if you haven't done it, i highly recommend it!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Doug Schulkind:

Pass the SPF 100, Flash!
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

here ya go cap'n! hi Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Doug Schulkind:

A few years ago, me and the family spent a week at Cape Lookout National Seashore. That's not far from you.
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

I grew up going to sunset beach, quinn! love that place, with its sleepy little arcade
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

yeah we take the boat over to Lookout sometimes, though we usually stop at Shackleford which is just one island over and track the wild horses there
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

love those little islands
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

@quinn: we play similar, but much weirder, games. they've gotten bizarre over the years
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

love this ashra album, even tho it has that early 90s chintz
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

i guess, particularly because of it, actually
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

THIS album, on the other hand, is mostly pretty hard to get through, but it is hilarious
Avatar 8:00pm just julia:

for those who want to know how to do the clam : www.youtube.com... : dig right in.
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

hi JJ! miss ya pal, nothin' but boys here
Avatar 8:00pm geezerette:

Hey, all those men have the same face!

Hiya, Evan, and party people.
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

hi Geeze!
Avatar 8:05pm quinn:

bad news for you about that arcade
Avatar 8:05pm Flash Strap:

i figured
Avatar 8:05pm quinn:

this is the kind of music i TRY to play at the beach house, and i always get shot down and they put on like The Band
Avatar 8:06pm quinn:

i mean i can get down w/ some cripple creek
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

i used to play pool there, and big bertha, and Lucky & Wild. back when i was trying the first few joints of my life
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm chresti:

the big pink?
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

hey the Band is so great but yeah people ought to wake up to the fact that synth jams are oddly as fitting for the beach as surf music
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

cools you off, wakes you up to the eternal vastness of the sea
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

sounds incredible on a boat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm melinda:

hi all, glad to be here.
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm chresti:

Hi Melinda
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm chresti:

Flash I thought your avatar was a train with a toothache until I zoomed in with my glasses on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm chresti:

or a toaster with a tootheache
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

what;s the toothache part? very curious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm melinda:

I see what you mean chresti.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm chresti:

I saw the space between the man and the totem as a bandage wrapped around his head
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

I played this track once before, a ways back, but it wasn't broadcast live because of a stream drop... it's still in the archives, but I always wanted to play it again
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

oh, now I see!
Avatar 8:27pm hyde:

i missed half of Bodega Pop last night and half of Explorer's Room tonight. i'm sorry for letting everyone down.
Avatar 8:28pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde! all debts are paid, pal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm melinda:

I got this Tariverdiev comp after hearing it on Morricone Island, so good.
Avatar 8:33pm hyde:

phew. because i aint got no money.
Avatar 8:33pm Flash Strap:

it's really wonderful, and chock full of material!
Avatar 8:34pm βrian:

If only I could play the pianah! I can murmur pretty well.
Avatar 8:35pm hyde:

on the bright side, i had a Singapore Sling and a Last Word while I was missing the show. The Last Word is an especially brilliant drink.
Avatar 8:37pm βrian:

@hyde: Please to describe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm ♪ke:

If there are any radio nerds here, yo, I just got a Sony XDR-S10HDiP and it's amazing. I can pick up all kinds of stuff. I can get WFMU at both 91.1 and 91.9! And I don't even have a proper dipole antenna hooked up to it yet. Just a chain of paper clips!
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

Hi Brian! Hi Ike!
Avatar 8:40pm Flash Strap:

Never had a Last Word, very very interested!
Avatar 8:41pm hyde:

@Brian it's equal parts gin, maraschino liqueur, lime juice and green chartreuse. it's really dry and not at all sweet, but the balance of it is just right.
Avatar 8:46pm βrian:

I dunno. Isn't the maraschino trademark held by the makers of Napalm? I forget.

Everything else sounds tasty, though.
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

never heard that about maraschino, brian - interesting
Avatar 8:55pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Evan and Explorers
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

hi coelacanth!
Avatar 8:58pm just julia:

oh my lord, this puzza song!
Avatar 8:59pm coelacanth∅:

and i am eating pizza -right on cue
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

@JJ: good puzza track, lotsa gritchtables
Avatar 9:00pm hyde:

gimme pizza. p-i-z-z-a.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm melinda:

When I would order a Shirley Temple as a kid I remember my mom telling me not to eat the maraschino cherry, but I think it was because of the red dye, no mention of Napalm.
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

maybe it was a napalm thing, you never know. happens all the time
Avatar 9:07pm coelacanth∅:

i used to know the son of the guy who invented maraschino cherries. i don't know if a big chemical company bought the rights to it but in the 80s he was still making a fortune off it; and napalm itself isn't owned by a specific company, though dow chemical made it for the us for their terrorist genocidal attacks on vietnam.
Avatar 9:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Napalm!?! And here I thought oven cleaner was the secret ingredient in those little fuckers.
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

Hi Franco!
Avatar 9:13pm coelacanth∅:

(actually i doubt the guy i knew's father invented them -though that's what he said. i think maybe he developed an inexpensive way to mass produce them, more likely)
Avatar 9:14pm coelacanth∅:

am i gaining time right now?
Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

yes, you're welcome
Avatar 9:17pm Franco Twinkie:

Flash! I have to leave the house right now and I'm not to happy about it. I'd like hang out with all the wisenhiemers under the pier.
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

yeah, don't go, stay here, we have joints
Avatar 9:18pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh man, don't temp me!
Avatar 9:26pm hyde:

this is hilarious
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

haha it got pretty ridiculous here during that
Avatar 9:37pm Flash Strap:

god i love this album
Avatar 9:38pm TDK60:

I'm late to shows often now, runnin' round Woofmooland holding my hat, tryin' to catch up.
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:

well better late than never my friend, as the saying goes
Avatar 9:40pm hyde:

whoa, Terje Rypdal
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:

such a good Terje, this one
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

so deep
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

jan garbarek on sax there
Avatar 9:48pm TDK60:

Is that an ECM release?
Avatar 9:48pm Flash Strap:

you know it
Avatar 9:50pm TDK60:

I love ECM. There, I said it.
Avatar 9:52pm coelacanth∅:

i have to check out. just leaving work. i'll be home by 11.30 for LD
Avatar 9:52pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm chresti:
