This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

I'm obsessed with this song now... "Never Ending, No Ending"

What an incredible team this was
Avatar 7:06pm Flash Strap:

Thanks again to friend of show Just Julia if she's out there for hipping me to Lou Christie in such a big way, more of Lou & The Tammys coming tonight
  7:07pm spookcity:

this is a real lovely tune flash, wouldn't expect anything less of ya. glad to have ya back compadre
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

Pete Drake's music is so weird and it's hard to tell if that was his intention
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

hey there spook! thanks man
  7:09pm spookcity:

i'm pretty sure i might have posted some of this cat's music many many moons ago. always a delight to hear his music :)

Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

Hyde! Hi pal

you just know we have to explore tonight, you just know we gotta do it
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

Hi Just Julia! I can't help it, I have to play more
  7:14pm spookcity:

i'm always here for earlier beach boys, although i know this may be a not so hip opinion but i dig their early shit about cars & root beer & the pleasures of slc
  7:14pm spookcity:

that being said the smile sessions is one of the most perfect pop albums ever made
Avatar 7:16pm hyde:

me i love the early Beach Boys too, spook
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

all beach boys is good or at least defensible until 1980 and that's my opinion

early stuff is god-tier but so is the post-SMiLE early 70s albums, which might be the most interesting run of american pop LPs, ever. don't sleep on wild honey, friends, 20/20, smiley smile, etc. DON'T SLEEP
  7:21pm spookcity:

i don't really care very much for that era tbh, which i know we've talked about a million times over now. i will go on the record & say that love you is amazing even though no one else i've talked to seems to think so
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

love you is cool
  7:24pm spookcity:

had to slsk that denvermen album, what a delight
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

next track is killa dilla, no survivors
Avatar 7:25pm hyde:

M.I.U. album? not too good, imo. i do love that Dennis Wilson said that he hoped the release of M.I.U. would fuck up Mike Love's meditation karma forever, though!
Avatar 7:25pm Flash Strap:

one of the best Tammys songs, maybe the big #2
Avatar 7:26pm geezerette:

Welcome back, Captain Spaulding!
Everyone's slow dancing in the sand. :D
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

MIU does blow, but if i recall it has 2 pretty good Dennis tracks (?)

Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

hi geezerette! that Don'l Duck is a sight for sore eyes!
Avatar 7:27pm just julia:

OH YES! "his actions speak louder than words" - i am always moved by this song, have spent many tens of listens interpreting the tone of these tammys bratty, emotional voices. just wanna crawl inside this track.
Avatar 7:28pm geezerette:

Quack! :)
Avatar 7:38pm geezerette:

Alexa's in love.
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

that "voice" is so unnerving
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm chresti:

what a crazy song!
Avatar 7:40pm hyde:

Harry Lookofsky is fascinating. He plays on jazz records in the fifties with some serious dudes. Apparently that's him on strings in Walk Away Renee too, at least if you believe the Internet. Some Quincy Jones connection too.
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

I believe it is, yes. what a guy
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

these are some of the greatest backup vocals I've ever heard. no one sings like this
Avatar 7:43pm Little Danny:

Evan! Nice to have ya back
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

LD my man, great to BE back
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

the Jokers are so juicy
Avatar 7:47pm geezerette:

Go, Upsetters!
Avatar 7:47pm Little Danny:

Jokers also did an incredible "Taboo." Do you know it?
Avatar 7:48pm Flash Strap:

I played it on my last show, if I recall! it's TOP-notch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm chresti:

Never gets old!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm chresti:

who says "I'm totally together" on this?
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

good question, it's a genuinely intriguing vocal performance
Avatar 7:54pm Little Danny:

Love the "Baaaby" on this Mittoo - lifted straight from "Evil Ways"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm chresti:

I love toasters
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

it's such a groovy track
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

who are your favorite toasters chresti?
Avatar 7:59pm Flash Strap:

really been digging Dennis Alcapone. Scotty was my first love. Trinity and I. Roy are top guys, though
Avatar 7:59pm geezerette:

Love that echo.

Avatar 8:33pm coelacanth∅:

Evan you know another reggae blue moon by brentford rockers? if not you might want to check it out. very laid back, almost loungy, but with some sweet vocals in the back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm chresti:

Was Johnny in a movie ever? He's got the look.
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

@TDK: always happy to fill that particular gap

that Chick Floyd is one of my favorite takes on Moon of Manakoora, which I often find wanting in its many versions
  8:44pm MrFab:

Aloha Flash Strap, welcome back! Returning to your exotica roots, eh? Everyone needs to start giving a hard time to bartenders who don't make proper mai-tais.
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

Hi there illustrious Mr. Fab!

I recently went to a bar where the bartender has sort of a reputation for making good tiki drinks, and they asked me what I'd like, and I basically said the only classic tiki drink I don't really care for is the Mai Tai – which is true – so this motherfucker made me a Mai Tai
  8:46pm still b/p:

You always want leave room in your thatched hut for a 6 or 7 foot tall harp.
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

and it was really good
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

hey B/P!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm chresti:

jeez! This is exotic!
  8:48pm still b/p:

I wish I liked rum.
Avatar 8:48pm Flash Strap:

i like it enough for two, pal
Avatar 8:48pm hyde:

heh, i like a good mai tai. what was the bar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm melinda:

This is thick exotica, I like it.
  8:49pm MrFab:

There ya go! See, bad mai-tais have ruined it's reputation.
Trader Vic's recipe or die!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm melinda:

I don't think I've ever had a Mai Tai
Avatar 8:50pm Little Danny:

@melinda: "thick exotica" is a great term
Avatar 8:51pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: some joint in durham with a dumb name. it's only good when the bartender is actually there, and the tiki night they do is a god damn shanda
Avatar 8:51pm Franco Twinkie:

So, Flash, What are your feelings about The Coco Loco?
  8:52pm chresti:

Thick exotica=full orchestra
Avatar 8:52pm hyde:

@Flash haha
  8:53pm still b/p:

Goin’ solo on the scorpion bowl, yeah? Good on ya.

Pool of Lava... did have hear about the Kilauea lava going into the lake and boiling the water entirely AWAY...?! Gone!
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

Coco Loco is a perfect drink when done right and done fresh, there is no better combo than rum and coconut water inside the fresh coconut
Avatar 8:54pm Franco Twinkie:

You got it, pal!
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

you and me Franco, we know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm melinda:

I looked up Mai Tai and apparently Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic's rival, had a more complicated recipe. They all sound good to me.
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

i'm a coconut lunatic to begin with, though. coconut is my favorite idea
Avatar 8:56pm geezerette:

It's like drinking with Gauguin at Don the Beachcomber. Hawaii is the U.S. Tahiti.
  8:56pm chresti:

I always get headaches from rum
Avatar 8:56pm just julia:

i just want to chime in briefly in support of the mai tai : made one tonight, in fact.
  8:57pm chresti:

The coconut might help
Avatar 9:00pm geezerette:

Yes to Rum, coconut and Thick Exotica.
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

well, you make a good mai tai, JJ. this is established fact
  9:00pm still b/p:

Good news / bad news a while back when ordering a mai tai bowl with friends during late night Rock ‘N Roll Sushi specials. It was cheap but without much noticeable liquor. So don’t need or want to be pulling full-hit booze through a straw into the system as the night’s final-hour choice, but then even at a discount....what’s the point?
Avatar 9:00pm Franco Twinkie:

Back in my drinkin' days, I would stop in at the Tiki Ti in East Hollywood on the way home from work. My goal was to have every drink on the menu at least once. After awhile I came to conclusion that most tiki drinks were about the same...Or the bartender was really lousy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm Uncle Michael:

Greetings from Chicago.
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

i think one of my favorites was at the Mai Kai in Fort Lauderdale, which is an unbelievable joint, called the Moonkist Coconut

but the Planter's Punch is a pretty impeccable recipe, esp. at its most simple
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

Uncle! good evening!
  9:03pm MrFab:

Franco, i have a book called "Tiki Drinks" and they do all seem to use a lot of the same ingredients, namely rum and coconut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04pm melinda:

howdy, UM!
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

Highly recommend Beachbum Berry's Intoxica and Potions of the Caribbean for anyone who wants to get into it

learning the "Jasper's Mix" recipe alone was worth it for Potions, (which is also a really good history)
Avatar 9:07pm geezerette:

Surf Textures is great!
Avatar 9:08pm hyde:

anything by Beachbum Berry is aces
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

"I'm just a derelict on the foam"
Avatar 9:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes, Mr. Fab, the thinking seems to be if you're in a tiki bsr to begin with, you'll probably be to distracted by the decorations to notice the sub-standard mixology.
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

he's also a very nice, cool person
Avatar 9:11pm Flash Strap:

my #1 Elvis, obviously

Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

alas and aloha, Franco. do come see us again
Avatar 9:25pm hyde:

i like how it's all so twangy
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

@MRF: whenever I finally make it out to LA, you should take me to the Tonga Hut and show me the ropes
  9:30pm MrFab:

The ropes, the nets, the pufferfish - you got it Flashy, would be my pleasure.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm chresti:

I don't believe I've ever heard the lyrics before
Avatar 9:34pm hyde:

i got to see Jules Dassin talk at a screening of Never On Sunday, which was super cool
Avatar 9:34pm coelacanth∅:

i've barely scratched the surface, somehow, of tiki drinks. i used to drink mai tais -somewhere, i don't remember then i tried a planters punch and thought it was almost the same but better...then i started drinking meyer's rum with just ginger ale.
...i'd like to try a coco loco right now though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm melinda:

Taste of Honey is another favorite.
Avatar 9:37pm coelacanth∅:

i prefer the instrumental versions over most or all the sung versions i've heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm melinda:

@hyde that is totally cool
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: agree with Melinda, that is really cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm melinda:

I first heard Herb's version but I might like Peggy Lee's better. Before we knew the real lyrics my sister made up a few of her own, it was funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Uncle Michael:

I actually first learned this as "the matzo manufacturers ball". "I'll be down to get ya in a push cart, Rifka..."

@C.: the cool thing about a planter's is that it can be basically just equal parts lime, sugar, rum. Some recipes add tea. I have my own that ups the rum slightly, uses darker sugar, and adds coconut water instead of tea or whatever. i guess it's totally different at that point, but it's a fun recipe to customize

UM: oh man that is hilarious

hahaha UM!

My uncle sang it that way...wouldn't be surprised if it's a Mickey Katz thing.
Avatar 9:42pm coelacanth∅:

Flash i don't even remember it! decades ago. but it was sweet and dark. i think it did have the tea.
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

i have no idea the recipe but i also love the drink, Three Dots and a Dash

Mr. Fab, have you ever been to the Mai Kai? you'd love it
Avatar 9:44pm coelacanth∅:

melinda i heard Alpert's version first for sure, as a child - watching the dating game!
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

of course the Jungle Bird is about as good as it gets
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

Alpert's version is really great imo
Avatar 9:45pm coelacanth∅:

is that a drink?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm chresti:

what a voice!
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

yeah Jungle Bird is a great sort of later-era tiki drink invented in some Malyasian hotel if i remember correctly. served with an orchid. verry delicious, easy to make (minus the orchid)
Avatar 9:47pm geezerette:

One of my favorite recordings.
Avatar 9:48pm Flash Strap:

Colin Blunstone's voice is magic

The Mai Kai's in Florida, isnt it? Ive heard the myths and legends but have never visited that state. Seeing as how I'm usually in the state of delirium (boom, tish!)
Avatar 9:48pm coelacanth∅:

i used to love the music played (all by Herb Alpert) on the dating game and the newlywed game when i was little. -specific songs for each event. (entree of the bachelorette, etc...)
Avatar 9:48pm hyde:

the Jungle Bird is great and its great benefit is that it's fairly simple
Avatar 9:49pm coelacanth∅:

i really have a problem with the zombies' version of summertime.
...it's too short.
Avatar 9:49pm Flash Strap:

Ft Lauderdale sucks ass but it's an unbelievable place, the Mai Kai. You could weep
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm melinda:

I still do like the Alpert.@coel I remember some of that, I think Tijuana Taxi was one.
Avatar 9:51pm geezerette:

Ha, Coel!
Avatar 9:53pm Little Danny:

Thanks Flash. What a return!
Avatar 9:53pm coelacanth∅:

"whipped cream" was definitely on one or the other of those tv shows. i had to get that album.
...even being a beatle worshipper i was very disappointed when i heard their version of -honey.
Avatar 9:55pm geezerette:

Evan, great beach party! Now it's summer! Thanks :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm chresti:

Everybody's parents had that whipped cream album
Avatar 9:55pm coelacanth∅:

i don't know, g - i think the zombies did my favorite version. (though Sam Cooke's is also spectacular)
Avatar 9:55pm Little Danny:

Swim ashore and join the us at the grotto why dontcha? wfmu.org... Hope to see y'all!
Avatar 9:56pm coelacanth∅:

(...and obviously some of the more traditional renditions are also spectacular)
