A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hey guys. Me, the wife and our 15 year old boy are going to Stockholm for the first two weeks of July. Any tips, pointers or warnings for a family from Brooklyn? Is Upsala in Sweden anything to do with the old WFMU Upsala? Any listeners wanna grab a coffee? I'm in and out of the office so may not reply right away, but I will come back now and again. Go ahead and contact me through the thing if you want.
Avatar 9:47am themutante:

Rotunda? You need good acoustic tiles to stop all sounds coming back at once in that place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am crateslinger:

I am interested in sailing and art. The boy and the wife are interested in Vikings and black metal. We know about the sunken ship museum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Magda:

I was just in Poland. The weather is goregous in Europe. If you have a layover in Oslo visit the Big Dipper records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am crateslinger:

And history. I am a big history buff. Any good books on history of Sweden? I only know of King Gustav because so many Puritans went to fight for him before the English Civil War. Otherwise clean slate.
Avatar 9:50am themutante:

15yr old boy is into Black Metal? Damn, that shit is deep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am crateslinger:

He grew up on it. It's the Ramones to him. I don't think there's any shows cuz it's festival season and they're all in Germany or whatever.
Avatar 9:51am Kevlicki:

Trouble, have you played Bing and Ruth much before?
Avatar 9:54am themutante:

I'm impressed, @crateslinger
  9:54am yeah:

@Magda-I am going to Dziadkowice and Zabzre July 3-10. Riding the PKP from Białystock down to Katowice halfway through to see in-laws I have not seen in 9 years or so. I hear Poland is more expensive now than it was in 2008!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am melinda:

Cool metro station.
Avatar 9:59am Davee:

This is a nice soothing set. Hello Trouble.
Avatar 9:59am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Seriously. I'd go just to linger in the bloody metro like an evil creature thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Itzall Ablurr:

Why yes, she DOES kind of sound like Courtney Barnett on downers- in a GOOD way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Magda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Adrian in London:

Good afternoon Trouble and listeners. What's happening?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am crateslinger:

it is the train station of the Druids.
Avatar 10:03am northguineahills:

The bearkery (yes, that the bakery's name) is baking real bagels right now[according to my olfactory senses]) next door, and the smell is wafting into my office. I haven't had a real bagel since I left Brooklyn. It's not open to the public, but I might just ring their bell and demand they take my money.
Avatar 10:04am themutante:

Avatar 10:04am Diezel Tea:

crateslinger has my life goals to a t. @ngh DO IT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Ken From Hyde Park:

In Stockholm, you can take boat tours around pretty nearby islands. It's a short train ride to Upsala from there. Quaint little town.
Avatar 10:06am themutante:

Starship Troopers. BUGGGGZZZZ! They have made thier base human accessable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am crateslinger:

We have one week in Stockholm Air BnB, and one week in a cabin on one of those islands. I will probably be on a boat many of those days. I want to rent a sailboat and go for an overnight.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Greg from ZONE 5:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am crateslinger:

Anybody know why the old WFMU alma mater was called Upsala?
Avatar 10:08am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Magda-yeah, I heard even Wałki has a new road!
Avatar 10:10am northguineahills:

@crateslinger: When I was in Iceland, instead of taking a geyser tour like the other tourists, I decided to take a cultural and history tour. Besides my now wife, it was just two other people. It was amazing.

I know all towns in Sweden will have something similar. I would look for Sigtuna, the capital of the kingdom of sweden until in moved to stockholm around the 13th c. Have fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am melinda:

@crateslinger Swedish-Lutheran affiliation, I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Barney Grubbs:

@crateslinger, what melinda said. maybe something interesting here: www.lostcolleges.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am melinda:

From wiki:

The name Upsala was chosen to honor both the historic Uppsala University in Sweden and the Meeting of Uppsala.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Barney Grubbs:

Also,if you have a little time in Stockholm, Sound Pollution is an entertaining little metal-focused record shop in Gamla Stan, the cobbly little old town island www.soundpollution.se
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am melinda:

I met a listener at the Hearty White show whose grandfather or great-grandfather had been someone important at Upsala but she didn't know that FMU had its origins there, it was nice to share that bit of history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am crateslinger:

Avatar 10:20am themutante:

Proper apples, @NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am crateslinger:

Thanks Melinda and Barney Grubbs. Taking diligent notes over here. Sound Pollution is now on the itinerary, and Swedish Lutheran affiliation is why the Puritans fought for Gustav although they were Calvinists. It was all about chopping up the papists.
Avatar 10:25am northguineahills:

Oh, crateslinger, look for anything Charles XII related. He's a curious figure.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am crateslinger:

Charles XII - now there's a 15 year old! I don't think my son could defeat Russia in a sword-fight.

crateslinger, a bit of a stretch here, but if you're interested in sailing and art, you might dig my grandfather's old comic strip "Kevin the Bold". He was an avid sailor, sailing featured prominently in his comics and his work was reprinted in Swedish comic books, like this www.facebook.com...
