hey everyone! Thanks for tuning in tonight! Glad you dug that Ruby track.

Sax! Sax! Sax!

  9:26pm Stevel:

So satisfying! Long live Polystyrene!
Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Julie M:

WHAT? Oy. Again, I'm stymied by the passage of time. Gotta love the Cars.
Avatar 9:37pm JakeGould:

I appreciate what you are playing but man… I need some of that flange at the beginning of “You’re All I’ve Got Tonight.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm efd:

it's alarming, isn't it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm efd:

it's coming, Jake!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Bootsie:

Weird... but in a way I like it
  9:39pm Stevel:

Strange (as I've never heard the demos) but still fucking great. I'd have to say the album production benefited The Cars much like Butch Vig helped propel Nirvana. (Nerd, nerd, nerd. )
  9:40pm Stevel:

efd: Did you see them live around the first album? Inquiring minds...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm efd:

nah, I was too much of a wuss to try to go to clubs when I was underage. Didn't see them until the mid-80s at Forest Hills tennis stadium, of all places.
Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Julie M:

Last week's earworm: "Ma Belle Amie"
This week's earworm: Whatever Cars you've got tonight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Bootsie:

Oh yeah, this is the stuff
  9:44pm Stevel:

Can't think of many stronger albums, as a whole.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Barkevious Shabazz:

I Heard a live feed broadcast from Philly on the first tour. Roy Thomas Baker earned his fee.
Avatar 9:45pm JakeGould:

FunFact™: When I was a teen in the early 1980s and was hunting around for computer games for my Atari, I was in “The Computer Center”, an early NYC mini computer chain on 57th Street and spotted… Greg Hawkes! He was shopping for an Apple IIc among the aisles. I asked a clerk if that was “Greg Hawkes from the Cars” and he basically told me to scram. Had to be 1984 since that is when the IIc came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm efd:

Generally I think RTB boosted the songs and made the album what it was, but I still think the demo version of "Just What I Needed" is pretty much perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Bootsie:

Yeah, I'm liking this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm efd:

haha, I am literally lol-ing at the clerk telling you to scram! So old-timey! :)
  9:48pm Stevel:

He certainly pulled the keyboards up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm efd:

ok, the drums do sound better on the LP version.
Avatar 9:49pm JakeGould:

Ha! Thanks. I get old times people things happening to me all the time.

Wasn’t their first album basically their whole live set at the time they were signed?
Avatar 9:49pm JakeGould:

ARGH! “I get olde timey people…”
  9:51pm andrewb:

The fact that the ramones couldn't get a second of radio or mtv play still makes the cars kind of hard to listen to.Not sure why I'm comparing the two
Avatar 9:51pm JakeGould:

Also, I should have gotten credit for recognizing someone in the cars who wasn’t Ric Ocasek or Benjamin Orr. :/
  9:52pm ?:

Wait what? keep thinking "Is this Cars song really that long?" I just psyched myself out thinking "What if Even is lying on the floor in the studio unable to move or respond.. And the Cars keep playing all night?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm efd:

@Jake you totally should have!
Avatar 9:52pm JakeGould:

This is the part of the movie where Phoebe Cates gets water stuck in her ear, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm chad from oregon:

The Cars were so f#^%&$#^$%#^in' good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm efd:

@andrewb ultimately though the Ramones cast the longer shadow, I think?
  9:53pm Barkevious Shabazz:

I found Candy O to be a far better record, and saw them on that tour. It was the vocals that sunk em live, making Roy Thomas an odd selection due to his emphasis on multitracking vocals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I was standing in line at the Best Buy in Poughkeepsie years ago and I'm certain I saw Ric Ocasek there with his son. I didn't approach him or anything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm efd:

Back in the day my friend Tim saw Ric Ocasek checking in to a hotel. He reported the conversation as follows:

Tim: Ric Ocasek! What are you doing here?
R.O.: I'm checking in to a hotel.
Avatar 9:57pm JakeGould:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Bootsie:

Don't Cha Stop is one of my faves!
Avatar 9:59pm JakeGould:

Reading up on Natalya Medvedeva the cover model for “The Cars” first album: “At the age of 17, Medvedeva moved to Los Angeles where she found work as a model, posing for Playboy and for the cover of The Cars' self-titled debut album in 1978, photographed by Elliot Gilbert. In 1982, Medvedeva moved to Paris and became a piano bar singer. She wrote poetry, essays for French magazines, and published two novels in 1985 and 1987.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Bootsie:

Two of my friends have had Ric Ocasek encounters.
I have not. :'(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Bootsie:

@Ken from HP yes, he lives in Millbrook.
  10:02pm robinson cano:

¡Amo los autos!
  10:04pm medson:

Good evening Folks.
  10:05pm G:

The Cars' style was such an interesting mix of new wave with simplified elements from prog (note the synth lines), which kind of met on a common ground that was power poppy. You wouldn't think new wave and prog were exactly a good mix, but the way they did it it worked great.
  10:07pm medson:

And the Cars will always be etched in my mind from Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm mr_mike:

Nice 'Cars listening session.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm efd:

thanks mr_mike!

You're all going to yell at me, but I've never seen Fast Times At Ridgemont High all the way through. Which I'm glad of in a way since when I hear "Moving In Stereo" I don't have that immediate association!
  10:22pm JC:

I love The Cars. Just What I Needed one of the best songs ever, imo. Thanks for this! happy 40 ;)
  10:24pm medson:

The segue from Shoo Be Doo into Candy-O gets me every time.
  10:24pm Stevel:

Hell of a set. New Bush Tetras? Not unlike Shopping. I like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm efd:

yep, this Bush Tetras is new!

@medson I'm with you 1000% on that, it's one of my most favorite moments of recorded music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm efd:

@medson I refer you to twitter.com...
  10:29pm medson:

@efd. Nice. I always turn that up a little louder.
  10:33pm Stevel:

Medson: The only cooler transition (to me) is Replacements on Sorry Ma...

I Bought a Headache into Rattlesnake via a very deep drag across a turntable into an ungovernable Westerberg scream. It's who they were.

(Grabbing Candy O now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Bootsie:

The Godfathers are _always_ a good choice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Bootsie:

They were a great live band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm efd:

YES, they really were! Got to see them a couple of times in the mid/late '80s, both great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Bootsie:

I saw them once in the '80s -- Living Colour opened! -- and again a few years ago at Maxwell's
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm Bootsie:

@efd i feel like we may have had this convo previously... #dejavu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm efd:

I was at that show with Living Colour! I really liked them too at the time, and they were good but the Godfathers blew them away. That was at the Ritz I think?
  10:45pm Stevel:

The Godfathers had such a brutal/clean guitar sound. Vicious licks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Bootsie:

@efd, yes, the Ritz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm medson:

King Gizzard, the hardest working band of 2017
  10:49pm Stevel:

King Gizzard... keeps impressing me. First heard them on Diane's show. Very Versatile.
  10:50pm Stevel:

Where are they from?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm medson:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Royal Headache broke up. Ugh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm medson:

King Gizzard did a cool thing with Polygondwanaland Album.
They made it free for everyone to download.
They even made a Vinyl Master available for anyone to press records. And boy did tons of pressings pop up.
  10:58pm Marc15:

No Bryce this summer?
  11:01pm Stevel:

Schedule changes agitate me, but things carry on. efd is never allowed to leave Wednesday nights. Unless he wants to, but maybe not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm efd:

just remember, every show you like on WFMU replaced a show that was someone else's favorite. Including mine.
  11:04pm tim:

i always loved the Poster Children.
  11:05pm Tim:

daisy chain and tool of the man
  11:06pm JakeGould:

I really like this summer schedule!
  11:06pm Stevel:

It's just so good that I care so much about different shows in different ways. So many agreeable personalities. Y'all share something with us. I'm a fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm medson:

Thanks for another great show Evan.
Good night all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm efd:

goodnight medson!
  11:34pm Stevel:

Good night!

efd: When's the last time you played The Mamas and the Papas? Cool reference song, although I don't keep up with all of them.
  11:35pm Stevel:

Also: I completely forgot this is a Harry H. segment. I blame the fog of war.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm efd:

haha! It looks like the last time I played the Mamas & Papas was during a different Harry Harrison segment in 2012! (They also show up on a playlist for the special show I hosted with Irwin, Dave Mandl, and Dennis Diken during which we featured some of our favorite drummers. Dennis picked a Mamas & Papas song that Hal Blaine played on.
  11:44pm Stevel:

I liked the drummer shows. I learned a bunch, as I've never played or spoken the language.
  11:44pm Fashion Tashjian:

Good morning from Yerevan Evan.
  11:49pm BEAVO:

Belle and Sebastian not a fan
  11:50pm Fashion Tashjian:

Haha, I just realized I should've stylized our city as YerEVAN)))
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm efd:

noted, Beavo.

Good morning, Fashion Tashjian! You can't spell Yerevan without Evan! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm efd:

we're on the same page, FT!
  12:01am Fashion Tashjian:

YerEVAN each Wednesday night there and Thursday morning here from now on.
