Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Rich in Washington:

the first time I ever got blackout drunk as a youth, I woke up to this record on my headphones playing side two over and over on my cheapo automatic turntable. It must've played over 100 times, easily. I somehow escaped having any kind of hangover whatsoever and I accredit it to Funhouse.

the Stiffs Live tour doc?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Rich in Washington:

Yeah. If it ain't stiff, etc...
Just recently heard of it.. Sounds interesting, but with everyone being a documentary filmmaker these days, it's hard to separate the wheat for the chaff, so to speak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Rich in Washington:

from. stupid stubby fingers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Uncle Michael:

It's more home movie than documentary, but I really enjoyed it for what it was.

Hi Michael! I'll be in and out - I'm running some errands!
  12:59pm dan:

All the music played on today's programs are a trillion times better than that sorry excuse "This Is America" by Donald "Childish Gambino" Glover. That just entered my top 10 worst songs list ever.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Webhamster Henry:

  1:02pm Alex in Illinois:

University Professor! I knew it!
  1:02pm Dean:

I bus to work. There's a stop one block from my house and a stop virtually at my school's doorstep. Still, the thinned student population is nice, though my school offers intensive courses for professional international students beginning immediately after graduation weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Dominick:

Hoo Boy!
  1:06pm dan:

In my neighborhood, you have these "fast and furious" drivers who zigzag on the highway like it's a race course. That has scared me off of highway driving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Uncle Michael:

L.O.T.! Alex (nope, not an academic)! Dominick!
  1:08pm Dean:

My residential street has speed bumps, one directly in front of our house. This is a no-win situation. When drivers slow down in front of our house, as they tend to do, I wonder for a split second why they're scoping out the place. When they don't slow down, I fear for pedestrians.
  1:10pm dan:

Rare Rolling Stones. Amazing.
  1:10pm dan:

This song probably became Tumbling Dice.
Avatar 1:10pm Roberto:

This sounds like Good Time Dice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Jeff Golick:

Or Tumbling Women.
  1:11pm Stevel:

Good lord. Just off of an hour-plus call with a financial advisor. Important, helpful, yet tedious. Take me away with your best meaningless musical selections!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm The Oscar:

  1:13pm dan:

Hey UM, you should a show devoted to demo recordings of famous songs.
  1:16pm Stevel:

Title it, Demolicious! You'll thank me later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Rich in Washington:

Gawd. For some reason, I have really been digging this era of country music. This was the stuff I remember growing up in the rural podunk of my childhood. My family hated this kind of music, too. But it just seemed inescapable.
I sure do like it now, to the continued consternation of my missus and some of my friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm The Oscar:

Back in college I briefly had a show that was all demos, alt-takes, covers, parodies, mashups-- basically, anything but the best-known version of any given song. The show's name was "Attack of the Clones."
  1:18pm Dean:

Sounds like you're playing the a-side to the state b-side.
  1:18pm Dean:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Uncle Michael:

More importantly, I have no fucking clue what I'm playing right now.
  1:23pm Dean:

Well, add that remark to the comments column. For the sake of accuracy.

  1:28pm dan:

I wonder if any of these amateur musicians know that their one song is being played on some free form station or has even been released on a compilation.
  1:29pm Dean:

Looks like some of Soffrok went on to have musical careers. One of them wrote Australian TV show theme songs, e.g., Family Feud.

(That was not an Elton John-in-gorilla-suit pun.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Uncle Michael:

  1:39pm dan:

There should be more of an appreciation for classical music and a condemnation of "This Is America".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

It's a shame I don't have a copy of This Is America handy.
  1:42pm dan:

If it were up to me, I'd take every last copy of "This Is America" from the MP3 files to the poorly made music video and have them destroyed.
  1:45pm Dean:

You realize, @dan, that you'll only make the song more alluring?
  1:47pm dan:

Unfortunately yes. I'd take 500 straight listens of "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" over one of "TIA" any day, week and year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

He is.
  1:49pm Dean:

Was humming AWSOP just this morning as I strolled from the bus stop. There's Procol Harum in the air, I guess.

Read an article yesterday about how the guy who did the paintings that became the cover illustrations for Aqualung got stiffed. Ian Anderson didn't want to hear anything about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

He didn't get stiffed. I read it too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm The Oscar:

I'm not sure I'd heard of Gasolin' until I went record shopping in Denmark. They're EVERYWHERE over there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Uncle Michael:

rightly so!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm jmd:

Hello Uncle. Never heard Cellophane Brain before. Cool and weird and a string section, of course. Nice, thanks.
  1:53pm dan:

Apparently, Gaslolin retained the services of Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker.
  1:53pm Dean:

He was paid what would amount to ~$11k in 2018 dollars, sure. But the deal in 1970 was a handshake, and the cover image, the copyright to which likely remains his, has been reproduced a gazillion times since. I do think his son, who wrote the article, seemed a little whiny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm The Oscar:

Kinda wishing I picked some up now. This is pretty solid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

  1:56pm dan:

The Aqualung Artist, Burton Silverman is almost 90 years old and still makes his money doing portraits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm Uncle Michael:

Dean, as far as I can tell, it was work for hire and he didn't retain any rights, contractually. They didn't by a painting, they commissioned an illustration.
  2:00pm Dean:

Work for hire only applies when the artist is an employee working within the scope of his/her employment. According to Silverman, who was not an employee of Chrysalis or Tull's management, there was no contract. Not good business sense, for sure, but these circumstances don't affect copyright.
  2:02pm Dean:

Now, it could be that pre-1976 Copyright Act required registration to claim copyright. If that's so, then the outcome could be different. The article didn't address any of this.
  2:04pm Dean:

[There are exceptions to the work made for hire rules that permit non-employees to produce them, but I'm pretty sure they require a written contract.]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yay, Bad Company!

I love vocal versions of "Popcorn." I feel like no two are remotely alike.

Carne asada? Chicken? Al Pastor?
  2:35pm Dean:

I once had a taco de sesos at LA's King Taco. Brains. Explains why I'm so smatr.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Uncle Michael:

Al Pastor if they do it for real on a vertical rotisserie.
  2:36pm dan:

I got a hankering for Tacos.

I sure wished we had the taco trucks on every street corner and a real president.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Rich in Washington:

We only have one taco stand in my town that does pastor meat right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Rich in Washington:

Most ones around here, if they even HAVE al pastor on their menus, they just take regular carnitas meat and slather it with a sort of al pastor like sauce. Not the same as the long marinated and roasted pork.

The place that's opening is a mexican grocery and restaurant that has three locations in Kansas City. There store here will be bigger tan any of the others. The store isn't opening for another 2-3 weeks. They've spent 13 months remodeling a derelict supermarket that had been closed for over 15 years.
  2:51pm Dean:

My favorite Mexican place in these parts--there are more in Southern California--is Mercado del Sol in Concord, which entails a bit of a drive for us. Not sure on which axis they prepare their pastor, but the complete package is wonderful.

Makes me imagine how much more dereliction the urban midwest would have if it weren't for the Mexican demographic boom of the past couple decades.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Uncle Michael:

ain't that the truth
  2:55pm Dean:

I'm thinking now of a joint in Pico Rivera, east of LA, where my mother-in-law went to buy masa one Christmas. It was a restaurant and, being in LA County, it was required to post a health dep't ranking (A, B, etc.). There was no posting, but the clientele when we arrived were county sheriffs. A good sign. The chile verde was out of this world.

Lovin' the spins, and the chat is engrossing as well. See you and the H-D crowd next time round the block. Later, UM, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks everyone. See you all back here next week!
  3:02pm dan:
