A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hi Trouble and Nina! Nina, play your Ice Cream Headache Song:
I'm in a Gamelan, so I think it's oddly authentic and satirical!
I also made some songs for the Ice Cream Headache project, which didn't happen when the organizers couldn't get their hands on the ice cream truck they wanted to use.

Dirty mouths from Sverge!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am melinda:

Why did avocado toast become a thing?
Avatar 9:52am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Advacado toast sounds pretty good right around now. Munching on freshly popped popcorn from Western NY Fun Foods.
Avatar 9:52am d rice:

What IS avocado toast?
  9:52am queems:

@melinda good question- i’m not a fan
Avatar 9:53am βrian:

I can't imagine toasting avocados is a good idea.

Love these loons.
Avatar 9:53am d rice:

I enjoy avocados, but I can't conceive of them in toast form.
Avatar 9:53am Wild Neil||Peace All:

How about deep-fried advocados?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Ken From Hyde Park:

I was slicing up a yellow bell pepper for lunch and it looked pretty good, so I ate half of it for breakfast.
Avatar 9:55am βrian:

I read that a lot of people cut their hands when preparing avocados. I just don't get it. My technique is to use common sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am fred:

Hello Trouble and listeners. It's a holiday here in France, so I can listen for a change
Avatar 9:56am βrian:

Though I have seen folks actually lightly chop into the stone to try to get it out. I don't advise that.
Avatar 9:57am SSS:

My favorite way to eat an avocado is out of the half shell, with a spoon, and only salt and black pepper. Yum!
Avatar 9:58am βrian:

@fred: What, another jour férié ? In the U.S. we have a number of holidays where most everyone has to work. Go figure.
Avatar 9:58am d rice:

Is it true that avocado stones have arsenic?
Avatar 10:01am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@D rice-I heard apple pits do. Arsenic can dissolve gold, also. We used it as a gold stripper when electroplating precisely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am fred:

@βrian: May has 4 over here. There's another one left, but I don't know when. I often learn about the religious ones from coworkers a few days before, or when I mistakenly show up at work and can't get in
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Dominick:

Slits always a fun thing
Avatar 10:02am Wild Neil||Peace All:

Corpus Christie is a big holiday in May in Poland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am frozen_peas:

@d rice: I'd be more concerned about the arsenic in rice.
Avatar 10:03am d rice:

@Wild Neil--Oh, maybe I was remembering apples. Weird about arsenic and gold.
Avatar 10:04am d rice:

@frozen_peas--Arsenic probably isn't the worst thing in me. Oh, you were probably talking about food.
Avatar 10:04am βrian:

I stumbled upon Easter Monday when I was in Avignon. I had no idea. Then I wondered if there might be an Easter Tuesday as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am steveo:

really great, Nina K., thanks for being here!
Avatar 10:05am d rice:

I like the chimes and bells in this track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am melinda:

Avocado on toast sounds ok, I've just wondered why it came to represent millennial trendiness.
Avatar 10:06am SSS:

My wife is actually allergic to avocados. Strangest allergy I have ever heard of. They make her violently ill.
Avatar 10:07am northguineahills:

The arsenic content in apple seeds is so minuscule, you'd need a a couple of gross of apples just to make a slightly effective poison.
Avatar 10:07am βrian:

Ah, so it's toasted bread with avocado. That sounds like a good after-school snack. Add a squeeze of lime and some coarse salt.
Avatar 10:09am northguineahills:

I've done open faced sandwiches w/ avocados, but they were Mexi recipes via my wife. (she is technically a millennial, I'm Gen X [7 years her senior])
Avatar 10:09am βrian:

"Three unlikely things, in combination." That sounds like a kind of koan.
Avatar 10:09am northguineahills:

@SSS: That is weird, never heard of it!
  10:10am JakeGould:

Avocado toast is just regular old cafe $7 toast made with thick bread and it has avocado on it among other things. This brings the cost up to $10 to $12.

It allows cafe workers to make lots of money off of something and also provides tons of entertainment as they take, prepare and serve the order.
Avatar 10:10am northguineahills:

Typhoid Mary ended up at Little Brother Island.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am steveo:

did you know each other in Providence???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Webhamster Henry:

If you want to read more about Roosevelt Island, my friend Stacy Horn has a book on this subject coming out next week, Damnation Island:
  10:11am queems:

north brother island
Avatar 10:11am SSS:

Yes, @northguineahills, it was difficult to believe, but while uncommon, other do have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am frozen_peas:

What is really delicious is mashed avocado (plus salt and pepper) mixed with a little olive oil and red pepper flakes, spread on toast. They sell it at Pret but it's easy enough to make it at home for next to nothing.
Avatar 10:12am βrian:

I love accordion when played in the France/Spanish style. And bandoneon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am N.A.R.D.:

I've literally never had avocado on toast and I have never owned an iPhone or iPod, I'm a black sheep millenial
  10:12am Roger Roger:

So glad you have Nina K on the show. She's one of my faves!
Avatar 10:13am northguineahills:

My bad, it was North Brother Island for Typhoid Mary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am The Oscar:

I feel like a lot of the accordion stigma is fading the further we get from Lawrence Welk. For people my age, I think the soprano sax has taken its place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Mick:

I love accordion, bandoneon, the whole box of wine!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am frozen_peas:

ditto, Roger Roger. Nina K is an amazing guest!
Avatar 10:14am northguineahills:

I love Paulina Oliveros style of accordion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am fred:

@βrian: You're more French than I am. I can't stand accordion, except Pauline Oliveros
Avatar 10:14am βrian:

As in, "home on the range." That works.

  10:16am Davy Gravy:

Oh Nina! I love your voice. Still remember you playing around the dinner table with Bill Frisell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am karlward:

This jingle stuff reminds me of Nilsson. It's awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Webhamster Henry:

I bet you Oliverosian accordion lovers would also like Guy Klucevsek's work.
Avatar 10:17am βrian:

Polka-esque accordion leaves me cold. Or lukewarm, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am N.A.R.D.:

I actually used to very much dislike polka-accordion, but it grew on me like a brain-eating fungus and now I listen to it on purpose
Avatar 10:19am Rev. Turnip Druid:

@fred: accordion can be marvelous but limiting it to drones. Same for any free-reed instrument. Heroic joy. But played tunefully? Not so much..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am fred:

@Rev: I tend to prefer when instruments are not played tunefully
Avatar 10:21am Magda:

A little late today, but I hope all is well in the world.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Trouble:

not exactly @brian, i hit the off button by mistake...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am The Oscar:

@sphere I once found a filk album from the early '70s at a Salvation Army. It's kind of fascinating-- it's before the mainstream scifi explosion, so all the songs are about books I've never heard of.

Nina, your music is wonderful and enchanting and perfectly lovely -- THANK-YOU! (especially love the song about LIBRARIES!)
and yes -- The Slits documentary is amazing -- i consider myself lucky and blessed that i got to see them when they came to the States many many years ago
and i appreciate them more and more every day! the honesty, integrity, creativity, . . . especially when i see crap like the latest Il Makiage ad campaign while just walking about ("How's that no makeup thing working out for you?" etc. -- BARF!!!)
